Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos earned a bit less in 2023 than the year before — but he still had a pay package worth $49.8 million.
That was down from $50.3 million for Sarandos in 2022, according to Netflix’s proxy statement filed Thursday with the SEC. In 2023, Sarandos had a base salary of $3 million, $28.3 million worth of stock option awards, a $16.5 cash bonus and $1.98 million in other compensation. The Netflix board’s compensation committee approved the residential security costs “after considering the potential security concerns related to Mr. Sarandos’ service as an executive officer and believes the security costs are a necessary and appropriate business expense.”
Greg Peters, who assumed the role of co-ceo in January 2023, had a compensation package last year worth $40.1 million, a significant jump from $28.1 million in 2022. He previously had served as COO and chief product officer. Peters’ 2023 pay included $2.9 million salary, $22.7 million in stock options, a $13.9 million cash bonus and $620,602 for personal use of company aircraft.

Hollywood star Ryan Gosling has mixed feelings after this year’s Oscar nominees were unveiled. While Gosling, 43, scored a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his work in ‘Barbie’, his thoughts were with Greta Gerwig, who failed to be nominated in the Best Director category, and Margot Robbie, who was left out of the Best Actress category, reports ‘People’ magazine.
The actor said in a statement, “There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film”.
He told ‘People’, “No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.”
He explained that to say he’s disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories “would be an understatement”.
“Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh,...

Netflix said today it plans to award its co-chief operating officers identical compensation packages for 2024 worth $40 million each.
Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters will receive a $3 million base salary; a target bonus of $6 million; a Rsu award with a total value of $15.5 million and a Psu award also valued at $15 million. The RSUs are time-based restricted stock units. PSUs are performance-based restricted stock units. Netflix calls the packages total target compensation.
The numbers in an SEC filing reflect changes in the way Netflix pays its top executives. For one, the board no longer allows execs to chose whether they prefer to be paid in cash or stock. “Historically, Executive Officers have been permitted to allocate compensation to cash salary and stock options. The Committee determined to eliminate this program feature to address shareholder concerns that executives could choose all cash compensation,” the compensation committee said.

Netflix’s board has approved 2024 pay packages of its top execs, with co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters each receiving target compensation worth $40 million.
For Sarandos, $40 million is the same level of pay he is targeted to receive in 2023, while Peters is getting a 5% step-up from the $34.65 million in target compensation for this year. Peters, formerly chief product officer and COO, was named co-ceo alongside Sarandos in January of 2023. Their total target compensation is dependent on company performance and are not guaranteed figures.
Reed Hastings, who stepped aside as CEO earlier this year, remains executive chairman. His compensation package for 2024 is pegged at a target of $1 million, down from $3 million in 2023. Before he exited as CEO, Hastings’ pay target had been $34.7 million this year, mostly in stock.

Netflix is going through some more changes on the corporate side.
Deadline understands that four members of its business affairs and legal team including Bryony Gagan are leaving as part of a restructure.
Bryony Gagan, Amy Paquette and Tim Mizrahi, who are all VP, business and legal affairs, and Stephen Zager, VP and Associate General Counsel, Corporate Legal are all exiting.
These are senior executives with Gagan, in particular, having been with the company since 2008, before it moved into original series and films.
It is the latest raft of personnel changes at the company, coming days after Jeremi Gordon, who spearheaded its move into advertising, left, to be replaced by Amy Reinhard, who is now president of advertising.
Gagan joined Netflix in 2008 and oversees all of its content deals, including content production, acquisition, and distribution, as well as overseeing its labor relations, music business and legal affairs, and intellectual property groups.

As Hollywood actors and writers strike together for the first time in more than half a century, executive pay is in the spotlight. Talent are posting residuals checks barely worth the postage it cost to mail them alongside captions criticizing Hollywood execs’ eight-figure pay packages.
SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America didn’t strike because of C-suite pay, of course, but the optics of such disparity are fueling the flames.
“What’s happening right now in Hollywood is a microcosm for what’s happening across America,” says Robert Reich, former U.S. Secretary of Labor and co-founder of the Economic Policy Institute. CEOs of major corporations often earn hundreds of times the salary of the typical worker, he notes, and some entertainment companies have ratios even more jarring.

In a symbolic rebuke of Netflix’s top executives, company shareholders voted against approving the compensation packages of leaders including co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters.
At the streamer’s June 1 annual shareholders meeting, investors failed to approve the proposed exec pay packages for 2023. But the vote was a non-binding “say-on-pay” advisory measure, meaning Netflix’s board can disregard the result. The board had unanimously recommended voting for the 2023 compensation plans.
The vote came after the Writers Guild of America had urged investors to vote against Netflix’s exec compensation measures in a letter Tuesday. That said, the majority of shareholder votes on the measure had already been cast prior to the issuance of the WGA’s letter — and most of those were “no” votes, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Netflix has dropped the full trailer for You People, its upcoming Kenya Barris comedy starring and co-written by Jonah Hill.
The three-minute teaser for Barris’ directorial debut delivers a fuller look at Hill’s character, Ezra Cohen, and his effort to find love, and more specifically, woo Lauren London’s Amira Mohammed in Los Angeles. At the top of the trailer, Ezra reveals to his friend (played by Sam Jay) his desperation to find partnership amid feeling “alone, on a building, dangling my legs off wondering what it’s like to feel companionship.”
“I don’t think I’ve heard of a man ever who wanted to be in a relationship so badly besides Drake,” says Jay.
Enter Amira, who — following an airport rideshare mix-up in which Ezra mistakes her for his actual Uber driver — causes Hill’s character to reveal that he’s “never felt so understood by somebody in my entire life.

Ed Helms has signed on to co-star with Jennifer Garner in the Netflix comedy “Family Leave,” with McG joining as director and producer.
Garner, who also serves as a producer, has been attached to the film since Feb. 2021. Adam Sztykiel is handling the rewrite of Victoria Strouse’s script, which is based on “Bedtime for Mommy” by Amy Krouse Rosenthal.
The film follows Jess and Bill Walker, a couple determined to keep their family close as their kids are growing older and less connected to one another. One day, after a chance meeting with an astrological reader, they wake up to find that they’ve switched bodies with a family living on the other side of the world. Unfortunately, the body swap happens to take place on the most important day in their individual lives, with a promotion, college interview, record deal and soccer tryout on the table.

Apple Studios emerged the big winner of what some say is an important Oscar precursor on Saturday night, as “Coda” took the top film prize at the annual Producers Guild Awards.
What began as a Sundance sales sensation directed by Sian Heder — the heart-tugging story following the only hearing family member in a tribe of charismatic New England fishermen — won the Darryl F. Zanuck award for best motion picture producing. Other notable film winners at Los Angeles’ Fairmont Hotel were Questlove’s “Summer of Soul” for documentary feature, and the musical juggernaut “Encanto” for best producers of an animated film.
“Succession” took home the Norman Felton Award for outstanding episodic drama. Apple’s “Ted Lasso” continued its trophy collection spree by claiming the Danny Thomas Award for outstanding television comedy. HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” won the David L. Wolper award for outstanding producer of a limited series.

The Producers Guild of America announced its nominations for the motion picture and television categories for the upcoming 33rd PGA Awards, and it was a good day for the streamers (once again).
Netflix ruled the film side with three films landing in the field of 10 nominees: “Don’t Look Up” from Adam McKay, “The Power of the Dog” from Jane Campion and “Tick, Tick … Boom!” from Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Warner Bros. captured two nods from its slate: “Dune” from Denis Villeneuve and “King Richard” from Reinaldo Marcus Green.
At the best possible moment with Oscar voting opening today, Amazon Studios’ “Being the Ricardos” from Aaron Sorkin snagged one of the coveted spots, which helps its best picture chances considerably.
Some of the omissions were pronounced, most notably Apple Original Films’ “The Tragedy of Macbeth” from Joel Coen missing out on a nod, even though the heartwarming “Coda” made it into the lineup.

Call it now: “Succession” will win the DGA Award this year for drama. That’s because it’s the only nominee this year for drama: Five episodes of the series’ third season filled all five nominated slots for this year’s DGA Awards category for dramatic series.
The “Sucession” sweep comes as the Directors Guild of America has revealed this year’s TV nominees for its 74rd annual DGA Awards, including achievement in drama, comedy, limited/TV movie, variety, reality, children’s and commercials. Also announced on Wednesday were the nominees for this year’s directorial achievement in documentaries.
On the comedy side, “Ted Lasso” led with three of the five DGA Awards nominations in the category, along with episodes of “Hacks” and “The White Lotus” (which somehow landed in the comedy field there).

Netflix co-ceo and chief content officer Ted Sarandos is set to receive $40 million in compensation next year, while chairman and co-ceo Reed Hastings stands to make north of $34 million.
Netflix disclosed the annual salaries and stock option allocation for 2022 for its executive officers in an SEC filing Tuesday. Hastings’ salary for next year will remain $650,000 and he is to receive options valued at $34 million. Sarandos will again get an annual salary of $20 million with an additional $20 million in stock options.
In 2020, Hastings and Sarandos earned $43.2 million and $39.3 million, respectively, in 2020, representing sizable bumps in their compensation.
Netflix elevated Sarandos to the co-ceo spot alongside Hastings in July 2020. At its shareholder meeting that year, “We explained that the dual CEO model formalized the prior working relationship between Reed and Ted and was an effective leadership model to further support our continued growth and international expansion,” Netflix said in 2021 its proxy statement.

Netflix co-CEOs Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos earned $43.2 million and $39.3 million, respectively, in 2020, representing sizable pay increases for the two men.
Hastings, who also serves as the company’s chairman, earned $38.6 million in 2019 and $36 million in 2018. Sarandos, who helped spearhead Netflix’s big push into original content, netted $34.7 million in 2019 and $29.6 million in the previous year.
More than half of Sarandos’ compensation was in the form of his $20 million salary, while the bulk of Hastings’ pay came from $42 million in options. Hastings only drew a $650,000 salary. Sarandos also enjoyed a generous incentive package, bringing in $18.3 million in options.

Night 4 of the Creative Arts Emmys was headlined by Quibi winning prizes at TV’s top awards.
The short-form content producer went home with two statuettes on Thursday night, both of which went to actors from the series “#FreeRayshawn.”
Legendary “Matrix” star Laurence Fishburne won his third individual Emmy for his portrayal of Lt. Steven Poincy, and then the very next award went to “Hamilton” alumna Jasmine Cephas Jones for playing Tyisha.
Another category worth looking out for on the night was voice-over performance, which saw Maya Rudolph win her first Emmy for voicing Connie the Hormone Monstress on Netflix’s “Big Mouth.” She could potentially pick up another come Sunday, as she is nominated for both “Saturday Night Live” and “The Good Place” in the guest actress in a comedy category.
“Schitt’s Creek” kicked off the penultimate Creative Arts night by winning its first, and likely not last, Emmy of 2020 for casting.

The last two Producers Guild of America Awards told us which movies — “Green Book” (2019) and “The Shape of Water” (2018) — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact, 21 of the previous PGA Awards winners have then gone on to claim Best Picture victories.
For the 31st annual ceremony slated for Saturday, January 18 at the Hollywood Palladium, we already know the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. The PGA’s 10 nominated films are “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Knives Out,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite.” All but “Knives Out” contend at the Oscars for Best Picture.

Much has been made about “Veep” never winning a Golden Globe, but did you know it’s also never won at the Producers Guild Awards? Sure enough, this year’s nomination marks the sixth and final PGA bid for HBO’s political comedy series, which ended its run last May. As this is the era of Peak TV, more and more worthy shows are going to be left out in the cold, we get that. But for “Veep,” a three-time Emmy winner for Best Comedy Series, to never earn recognition from the PGA Awards, this seems like a trend Selina Meyer should veto.

The first time “Veep” was nominated by the producers guild was for its 2013 season. “Modern Family” was still flying high at awards shows across the board, with that year being its fourth and final victory at PGA.

The Directors Guild of America is out with its DGA Awards nominations for TV series after a false start earlier this week. The shows whose helmers will be vying for the hardware are Game of Thrones, Watchmen, Succession, Barry, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Veep.
See the full list of noms revealed today below.
The DGA had been slated to announce all of its TV nominations earlier this week, but instead it revealed only the TV Movie/Limited Series, Documentary, Variety/Talk/News/Sports and Commercials nominees on Monday. It blamed the delay on “a re-vote related to a newly implemented electronic entry submissions process.”
The guild had announced last week that Jill Soloway — a previous DGA Award winner for her work on Transparent — was left off the ballot because of an internal DGA error. “We regret to inform you that the following entry was inadvertently omitted from the Comedy Series ballot: #165a.

With all of the categories in, Amazon Prime Video’s “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” now ties FX’s “Fosse/Verdon” for most nominations, with three apiece. “Maisel” scored noms in the comedy category for directors Dan Attias, Amy Sherman Palladino and Daniel Palladino.
The Palladinos also faced off in the comedy directing category last year, which was ultimately won by Bill Hader — who’s back this year as well. Rounding out the category is “Veep” showrunner David Mandel, nominated for directing that show’s finale.
On the drama side, the category is completely dominated by HBO, which earned every nod. That included two for “Watchmen,” for directors Nicole Kassell and Stephen Williams. “Game of Thrones” also received two nominations,...

The Producers Guild of America has revealed its nominees in the motion picture and television categories for its 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards; nominees include recent Golden Globe winners “1917,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Missing Link,” “Succession,” “Fleabag” and “Chernobyl.”
The PGA, which has about 8,200 members, has matched the Oscar for best picture in 21 of its 30 years, including “The Green Book” last year and “The Shape of Water” in 2018.
The PGA uses a preferential balloting system that’s similar to that employed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The PGA and AMPAS both expanded their voting for the top film to 10 nominees in 2009. About three-quarters of the PGA’s Zanuck nominees wind up as Oscar best picture nominees.
On the TV side, among all of the drama and comedy nominees, only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (last year’s comedy winner) is a repeat from last year.
