Emma Stone is awaiting her second Oscar for Best Actress as she has been nominated for the film Poor Things. The actress had previously won the award for Damien Chazelle’s musical romance La La Land. Stone stars in the film as Bella Baxter, a resurrected woman who sees the world in a new light as she begins to understand it again.
Stone mentioned how she had to prepare extensively for the role as she had to be extremely comfortable with every other co-star in the film. She also mentioned how they had to film the movie in virtual sets during the scene where Bella and Mark Ruffalo’s character Duncan Wederburn go on a steamship journey. Stone mentioned that the moving VFX caused her nausea.

To fulfill Yorgos Lanthimos’ vision of “Poor Things” as a surreal Victorian world embodying Bella’s (Emma Stone) wild and forward-thinking imagination, Simon Hughes, the production VFX supervisor, got to play with a vast toolbox of traditional and cutting-edge techniques with Union VFX. This included miniatures, painted backdrops, LED screens, CG enhancements, and mixing strange hybrid animal combinations shot in camera and digitally composited. The result is a unique retro-futurism that was achieved in collaboration with production designers Shona Heath and James Price and the art department.
“From the get-go, the idea of avoiding this run-of-the-mill visual effects world was discussed with Yorgos,” Hughes told IndieWire. “So it’s like, how do we embrace some of that traditional approach? ‘Black Narcissus’ [from Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger] was openly discussed [for its use of miniatures and painted backdrops for the Himalayas]. So that was a huge part of the work that we had to do, creating environments that are photoreal with traditional...

Prince Harry looks set for a courtroom battle with The Daily Mail newspaper’s publisher in the UK.
The British royal’s damages claim over allegations of unlawful information gathering can go ahead to trial, a High Court judge ruled Friday.
As the BBC reports, Prince Harry is among a group of high-profile individuals, including Sir Elton John, David Furnish, Sadie Frost, Liz Hurley, and Sir Simon Hughes, who have brought legal action against Associated Newspapers Limited (Anl). The group has accused the publisher of multiple “gross breaches of privacy” such as hiring private investigators to place listening devices inside cars, listening into phone calls, and dishonestly obtaining medical and financial information.
Associated Newspapers has denied all the allegations. At hearings in March, its lawyers argued that the claims — which date as far back as 1993 — were brought “far too late,” The Guardian reported. The newspaper added that David Sherborne, representing Prince Harry and others,...

Associated Newspapers is also being sued by Elton John and his husband, David Furnish, Elizabeth Hurley, and Sadie Frost, who also appeared in court.

Landing on Sky’s U.K. arm as England’s cricketers enter the knockout phase of this winter’s T20 World Cup, Ashley Gething’s one-off documentary “The Greatest Game” benefits from innately dramatic raw material. Held at Lord’s in 2019, the one-day World Cup final between England and New Zealand was quickly framed by some experts as the most thrilling cricket game ever witnessed: a high-stakes encounter before a roaring full house at the sport’s spiritual home with an outcome that remained in doubt until the last ball of a so-called “superover” — rare and unusual occurrence that effectively serves as a tiebreak.
As commentators on the day remarked, it was fairy-tale stuff, a screenplay you couldn’t write for fear of being dismissed as a fantasist. Two evenly matched sides, all-rounder Ben Stokes’ last-gasp heroics, extraordinary strokes of luck and flashes of skill: they’re all here, compressed...

What’s Winnipeg, Manitoba most famous for? K-Tel? Hunky Bill’s Perogie Maker? The Green Garbage Bag? Well, yes, it’s the birthplace of all those things, but Winnipeg also has an incredibly rich and diverse filmmaking community. Curators Clint Enns and Leslie Supnet — who are also Winnipeg filmmakers themselves — have gathered an impressive collection of the best that their hometown has to offer.
What unites these films is that their place of origin has definitely influenced their content. Not that these films are about the city specifically, bu they do exhibit the same scrappy lo-fi inventiveness that makes Winnipeg the unique place in the world that it is. It’s the spirit of the “strange humour, hand-crafted experimentation and lo-fi/high-tec conundrums” of the town that will shine through on the screen.

The deputy leader of the Conservatives in the London Assembly has been criticised for insulting the deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats. Assembly member for Bexley and Bromley James Cleverly made the comment about Lib Dem Simon Hughes on Twitter and his own blog page yesterday, the 100th day of the coalition between both parties. Cleverly said: "We may be coalition partners but it doesn't stop me thinking that Simon Hughes is a d**k. Simon Hughes clearly feels that he is the 'real' voice of the Lib Dems, he isn't. "Hughes's latest bone-headed idea is for back-bench Lib Dem MPs to have a veto on the coalition government's policies. Fool. "There is a process by which backbench MPs can oppose the government's policies, it's called a division." Liberal Democrat leader in (more)...

Oh Eurovision, why must you only be once a year? If you’re not that familiar with it, then in a nutshell it’s an excuse for gay men to have house parties and laugh at bad European music.
Approximately 120 million people tuned in to see Norway host the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest, where this year Germany took the title.
Germany doesn’t usually do very well in the scoring, but this year they blatantly cheated by taking it seriously. They put a quirky singer named Lena up for the title and she half-spoke, half-sang a love song in a strange accent à la Bjork/Lily Allen.
Also weighing in Germany's favor, they’ve been supporting the European economy, whereas the UK closed their eyes and put their collective fingers in their ears – and came last as a result. It didn’t help that we were represented with a song by Pete Waterman,...
