Wrote a memoir in his 50s titled "One Time I Saw Morning Come Home" in
which he tries to come to grips with the fact that his parents were
just teenagers when they had him.
Daughter is script supervisor Samantha C. Kirkeby, who heads the Clair Huffaker Company.
Started his own film production company in 1969.
Attended Princeton and Columbia universities and the Sorbonne in Paris. He worked in Chicago as an assistant editor for Time magazine before turning to writing western fiction.
