A number of directors are pursuing litigation against the digital indie film distributor 1091 Pictures for failing to make promised revenue-sharing payments after selling their films to the platform, now owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. Helmers are scrambling to reclaim distribution rights to their work out of fear that 1091 Pictures’ parent company could declare bankruptcy.
Filmmakers say they are owed their share of distribution revenue from licensing deals with 1091 but Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment has not come through with payments. Some have taken the company to court, including small-claims court, to press their cases.
Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment acknowledges that the company, which also owns Redbox and Crackle, has faced “cash flow issues,” as CEO Bill Rouhana told Variety. The company already disclosed that it was unable to file its third-quarter earnings information on time.

This year’s Humanitas Prizes for screenwriting, usually handed out at Beverly Hilton ceremony, were announced via the Los Angeles Times this year in solidarity with the unions on strike, including the Unite Here Local 11 hospitality workers. And on top of awarding shows like The Last of Us and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Humanitas, an organization founded in 1974, also honored the striking Writers Guild of America itself with its “Voice for Change” award. Past winners of that award have included Ava DuVernay and Kenya Barris.
Humanitas’ mission is to tell “stories that explore the human experience because we believe that the act of acknowledging our common humanity is transformational.” With that in mind, this year the organization’s winners include The Last of Us‘ Craig Mazin for the teleplay for the emotional and critically lauded episode “Long, Long Time” in the drama television category. Tom Huang has built himself a unique resume as a director. His works range from comedies like “Why Am I Doing This?” to dramas such as “Find Me.” For his latest feature, which he also wrote the screenplay for, he would incorporate elements that draw influence from his personal experiences with his family. “Dealing with Dad” would receive positive audience feedback and take home numerous awards from various film festivals.

Healing seldom happens overnight. Wounds may run deep for years before they are patched up for the world to see and can continue to fester beneath the surface even once the facade has been restored. No one should ever have to grow up in an environment where family becomes the cause of such wounds and yet so many do: these cuts are the deepest, and there can never be enough sutures to piece back what once was; these are holes that follow so many into adult life, impacting the choices made and the paths followed. In Tom Huang’s stumbling dramedy “Dealing With Dad”, these wounds impact a flawed family’s reunion to handle their dad – the root cause of their collective trauma – and help him overcome a bout of depression; the longer the film drags on the more obvious it is they are as burdened by his affliction as...

Film bosses behind upcoming movie Lottery Ticket have been hit with a lawsuit from a screenwriter who alleges his idea was stolen.
Tom Huang filed papers at Los Angeles County Superior Court on Wednesday claiming he wrote a treatment for a movie plot in 2004 and talked it over with his agent Brad Kaplan.
The writer alleges Kaplan "stole" the idea and passed it on to his client Erik White, who wrote and directed Lottery Ticket, about a young man who has to fend off his greedy neighbours when they discover he's holding a winning ticket worth $350 million (£233 million).
Huang claims the film, which is due for release later this month, includes parts of his story such as "detailed plot elements, characters, and scenes", reports TMZ.com.
He is seeking an undisclosed amount but states in the legal documents that Lottery Ticket, starring Ice Cube, is likely to make millions of dollars in profit.

Ice Cube 's new movie " Lottery Ticket " doesn't come out for another week -- but there's already a legal fight over the flick ... from a screenwriter who claims his agent ripped off his idea and gave it to another one of his clients. The man filing the lawsuit is Tom Huang -- who once wrote an episode of " The Mullets " back in 2003. According to legal documents, Huang claims he came up with an idea for...

Screenwriter Tom Huang filed a lawsuit Weds in L.A. Superior Court, against Evolution Entertainment, and managers Brad Kaplan, Oren Koules and Mark Burg, as well as Erik White, the director of the upcoming film Lottery Ticket, (who also has a co-”story by” credit on the film), claiming “breach of fiduciary duty, aiding and abetting breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, civil conspiracy, breach of oral contract, promissory estoppel, breach of implied-in-fact-contract and unjust enrichment.” Whew! In other words… they stole his script.
Huang claims that in 2004, Evolution took him on as a client and helped him develop a treatment for a film called “Gotta Make It Til Morning.” Kaplan, a literary manager, then allegedly suggested Huang work with White, another Evolution client, to develop the idea further. After a few meetings, the project didn’t go anywhere, and Huang says he thought the movie was dead. That is, until...

Why Am I Doing This? is a comedy about a struggling actor and comedian trying to make it in Hollywood. It stars Anthony Montgomery (I'm Through With Girls), Lynn Chen (Saving Face) and Tom Huang who wrote and directed it. It's the type of quirky multicultural story that independent cinema needs. I'm hoping that Huang forms a Judd Apatow-like band of actors and crafts more starring roles for Montgomery and Chen (plus Sheetal Sheth, James Kyson Lee and Fernanda Andrade).
You can catch Why Am I Doing This? on the big screen for a limited engagement at the Laemmle Music Hall theater in Los Angeles until May 20th.
