New Line’s new animated movie, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, is moving from its April 12, 2024 release date to Dec. 13 next year.
The move stems from a chain-reaction of Warner Bros re-dating today, spurred by Legendary Entertainment’s Dune: Part Two going from Nov. 3 this year to March 15, 2024, which then pushed that financier and producer’s other title, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire from that date to April 12, 2024. Dune: Part Two had to move had to shift on account of the unavailability of its cast to promote during the actors strike.
War of the Rohirrim will now face off on its new December date against Sony’s reboot of The Karate Kid.
The anime feature, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original New Line Lord of the Rings trilogy. Those Peter Jackson movies, in addition to his Hobbit trilogy,...

For more than two decades, the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival (Nifff) has been a draw for genre filmmakers from across the globe and a pull for Swiss youth. Heading into its 22nd edition, which runs June 30 – July 8, the lakeside event will once again showcase the kind outré and audacious fare that Neuchatel’s reliable and devoted young public has come to expect, while continuing to bridge outward, welcoming more unfamiliar faces into the fold.
“By instinct, influence, and mutual attraction, genre cinema will always appeal to the young,” says Nifff director Pierre-Yves Walder. “In fact, Nifff attracts one of the youngest publics of any Swiss festival, but I’d like to convert different audiences of perhaps different ages as well. And not just for commercial reasons; I find it so interesting and essential to mix things up.”

Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy still has a lot of aging to do before it catches up to Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm) — recall that the hobbit is celebrating his 110th birthday with the long-expected party that makes up the early beats of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.” But as each entry in the series reaches its 20th anniversary — “Fellowship” last year, “The Two Towers” this year, and “The Return of the King” in 2023 — it’s worth reflecting on more than the shadow of the past of the films themselves. Or more than their theatrical cuts, at least.
A month prior to the premiere of “The Two Towers,” New Line Home Video unveiled the “extended edition” of “Fellowship of the Ring,” with 30 minutes of additional footage spread across six new and 20 expanded sequences. The DVD box set’s packaging resembled a well-worn tome bound in green leather,...

When it comes to the most entertaining Easter eggs and tidbits sprinkled throughout "The Lord of the Rings," there are a handful of time-honored traditions that fans have passed down and made sure to turn into endearing memes. Did you know that Viggo Mortensen broke his toe after kicking a helmet? How about the fact that Sir Christopher Lee was the only cast member to actually know J.R.R. Tolkien? Oh, and then there are all the various cameos by director Peter Jackson throughout the trilogy.
But even the most knowledgeable viewers may have missed a specific fun fact that has linked every single live-action Tolkien adaptation together. Of all the talent that have participated in various Middle-earth stories over the last two decades, only a sole individual has left their fingerprints on each and every one on-camera. No, it's not mo-cap actor extraordinaire Andy Serkis or even director Peter Jackson,...

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’: Turning the Mines of Moria Into the Halls of Khazad-dûm
It’s hard to imagine now that there are several movies and a TV show based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, but at one point there were very different, competing visions of what Middle Earth looks like. “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” production designer Ramsey Avery first fell in love with Tolkien illustrations by the Brothers Hildebrandt in the ’70s and has watched artistic interpretations of the author’s legendarium evolve over the decades, to the point where the work of Alan Lee and John Howe was so central to Peter Jackson’s vision for his “Lord of the Rings” films, they were both hired as concept artists for the series.
Avery’s particular challenge on “The Rings of Power” was to build environments that are both familiar and unfamiliar — some unevolved versions and some much more evolved versions of the...

Exclusive: Brian Cox, Gaia Wise and Miranda Otto are just some of the names in the voice cast for New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation’s upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.
The movie centers around the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the mighty King of Rohan, a character from the J.R.R. Tolkien book’s appendix. Succession actor Cox will provide the voice of that protagonist.
The anime feature, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg – a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. It's possible, if not probable, that we'll simply never get a cinematic trilogy the likes of "The Lord of the Rings" ever again. Even the most ardent and skeptical J.R.R. Tolkien scholar at the time couldn't have turned their nose up at the vast amount of resources and attention to detail paid to every aspect of the production back in the late 1990s. From concept artist extraordinaire John Howe to composer Howard Shore to costume designer and special effects wiz Richard Taylor to — oh yeah — that incredible ensemble cast, director Peter Jackson and the rest of the creative...

The world’s most ambitious corporation is making the world’s biggest TV show. Amazon is hard at work on “The Lord of the Rings,” the series adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary epic fantasy franchise, which was previously adapted into the equally beloved “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy and the “Hobbit” trilogy, as well as many other adaptations. This will be the first time “Lotr” is being made into an ongoing TV series. It’s going to be a big deal. And by “big deal,” we mean “cost over a billion dollars to make.” Amazon paid $250 million for the rights alone, in a deal the attorney who negotiated it called “the most complicated deal I’ve ever seen.”
The show was announced in 2017. The eight-episode first season is in production now, and the second will start shooting soon after. The series is expected to run for five seasons.

If there is a definitive reason for genre fans to maintain their Amazon Prime subscriptions (besides the free 2-day shipping), it’s the company’s long-gestating untitled Lord of the Rings television series. The New Zealand-based production successfully endured a lengthy pandemic-era hiatus to complete its pilot this past fall, and continues work on subsequent episodes. Yet, the recent exit of cast member Tom Budge seems to signal that the purportedly billion-budgeted series is facing creative difficulties.
Budge revealed his departure from the ensemble of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series with an Instagram announcement, which was complemented by a thematically-appropriate vintage Johnny Cash performance of “Ring of Fire.” However, the circumstances over his exit were not exactly pun-worthy.

As one of the greatest cornerstones of pop culture and genre fiction as a whole, The Lord of the Rings still has tens of millions of fans around the world. And they’ll be glad to know that the legacy of the author behind the books will remain intact for the foreseeable future.
It all started when a passionate philologist with an unrivalled sense of imagination set out to create one of the biggest and most detailed fictional universes in the history of literature. And while most Tolkienists would argue that the novels are universally acknowledged on their own, Peter Jackson’s highly acclaimed trilogy of movies further helped cement the cultural powerhouse that is The Lord of the Rings.
Even now, Amazon’s television adaptation remains one of the most hotly anticipated series coming in the near future. And 2020 in general has been a great year for fans of Middle-earth.

Ian McKellen and his “Lord of the Rings” co-star John Rhys-Davies are among the actors lending their voices to Project Northmoor, a crowdfunding charity campaign that seeks to raise funds to buy J.R.R. Tolkien’s home on Northmoor Road in North Oxford, England. The home, which is now for sale, is where the author started work on his “Lord of the Rings” franchise. The goal is to not only buy the house but also to turn it into the world’s first Tolkien literary center.

No one knows Middle-earth quite like Peter Jackson does, so it’s not hard to see why Amazon Studios was interested in roping the Kiwi director in for their lavish Lord of the Rings TV series.
The award winning filmmaker has already gone on record though to say that he’s happy that he’s no longer tied up with Middle-earth and all of its many characters and storylines. And, frankly, after putting together six fantasy blockbusters based on Tolkien’s work, you can hardly blame him.
But even without Jackson’s involvement, Amazon has still managed to assemble quite an impressive creative team for the series, from Game of Thrones producers and writers to folks who worked on major motion pictures like The Last Jedi and The Aviator. Suffice it to say, it’s an impressive roster of talent, and you can find the complete list, along with a brief promo teasing their roles,...

Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings” TV series has set its fellowship — er, creative and producing teams, for its adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, led by showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, the studio said during the Television Critics Association press tour Saturday.
Set in Middle-earth during the Second Age, the small-screen adaptation will explore new storylines preceding Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring.” Amazon Studios has a multi-season commitment for the show, and the deal also includes a potential spinoff series.

As if the night wasn’t already dark and filled with enough terrors, now George R.R. Martin has gone and revealed a look at those horrifying giant ice spiders Old Nan was yammering about to little Bran back in “Game of Thrones” Season 1. And, uh, she definitely undersold them.
“Here’s an official sneak peak of John Howe’s cover art of our 2020 SoI&F calendar featuring the legendary ice spiders which haunt old Nan’s creepiest bedtime stories,” the “A Song of Ice and Fire” author tweeted Thursday, alongside a photo of — you guessed it — those ginormous, eight-legged beasts.
In case you are having a hard time remembering these guys (because you haven’t actually seen them on the HBO series) allow us to remind you of the chilling tale Nan regaled a newly-crippled Bran with when he was bedridden in Season 1 with this excerpt: “They swept through cities and kingdoms,...

Hidden movement games have been around for a while, yet there are still relatively few of them to choose from. Letters from Whitechapel and Fury of Dracula are perhaps the two that most people will have heard of, but last year, Italian publisher Ares Games saw fit to introduce the concept to one of the most popular licenses in the world. Rather than having four or five “good guys” chasing down a villain like Jack the Ripper or Dracula, the majority of players will act as Rimgwraiths, seeking Frodo and his party in order to claw back The One Ring.
At first glance, I felt that Hunt for the Ring must be a much older game. It is luxuriously illustrated by renowned fantasy artist John Howe which gives a very classical, slightly reserved appearance. As my time with the game went on, I began to appreciate it more and more,...

By this point, Lord of the Rings, Hobbit, and all-around Middle-Earth fans have collected roughly 17 different editions of these films. Despite the fact that the latest trilogy in the entire opus can't hold a candle to the first, they tend to be worth the purchase by virtue of the special features alone. It's because of that that I have no problem in reporting that Amazon has posted a listing for what they're calling the Middle-Earth Ultimate Collector's Edition.
The eagle-eyed folks over at io9 were the first to report the existence of this listing, which contains a reported 30 discs. That's right. Not one. Not two. But 30 discs, which accounts for five Blu-ray discs per film, which is staggering.
Here are the specifics from Amazon:

To keep you from rising up in rebellion, Random House has released another Game of Thrones book, which will fill at least some of hours during the long wait for The Winds of Winter. It's a coloring book, filled with 45 illustrations of characters and scenes from George R.R. Martin's books, and it's on sale now. If you've ever wondered what Tyrion would look like with blue hair, or what Daenerys would look like in a green dress, this is the gift for you. The drawings come from acclaimed illustrators like Yvonne Gilbert, John Howe, and Tomislav Tomić — but no matter the artist, you'd better start stocking up on red crayons.

Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and New Line Cinema jointly announced on Friday that the much-anticipated final film in Peter Jackson’s trilogy adaptation of the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, has now been titled The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies.
The film, previously titled “The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” will be released worldwide December 17, 2014, with select international territories releasing on December 10, 2014.
Peter Jackson stated, “Our journey to make ‘The Hobbit’ Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. ‘There and Back Again’ felt like the right name for the second of a two-film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced — after all, Bilbo has already arrived...

Even though Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is getting mixed reviews I think one thing everyone can agree on is that it looked amazing! The cinematography and the visuals were spectacular! Thanks to ImagineFX we can show you some of the beautiful concept art that artists John Howe and Alan Lee created for the movie. They were the lead concept artists on The Lord of the Rings, and were in charge of helping create the world of The Hobbit trilogy.

A king he was on carven throne In many-pillared halls of stone With golden roof and silver floor, And runes of power upon the door. That poem inspired one of the winners of the Treasures of Middle-Earth Design Contest presented by The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. We first wrote about this contest back in September, which was asking for submissions of all types, to design weapons and landscapes as well as creatures and characters. The complete selection of winners has been unveiled and includes an outstanding Hall of Durin piece, and the trolls painting seen above (and below). All the winners received exciting prizes. Four incredible entries were named the best of the best by the judges: legendary artists John Howe, Alan Lee, and Richard Taylor. Given the epic undertaking that is Peter Jackson’s work on the Hobbit trilogy, you would expect post-production to be a hectic affair. If you saw any of the Lord Of The Rings post-production blogs or watched the extras, you know that even when the movies are close to release, there’s plenty of work still to be done. Jackson’s latest video blog takes us to his post-production facility and the insane scramble to edit, slot in effects and music and whisk the whole thing into shape. Take a look above.Jackson gives us a whirlwind tour of various post departments – the edit suite, visual affects, sound design and mixing etc. – but the story here is largely told by the huge team beavering away to get everything perfect. Even conceptual artists John Howe and Alan Lee are still hard at it, designing imagery to fill blue screen gaps or...

Because. They. Can. We can come up with dozens of reasons why theater owners would want us to literally move in to their places of business the weekend before the big premiere, but we think the first one covers the rest. Yes, advance tickets for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey go on sale tomorrow at noon, but so do tickets for the extended cuts marathon of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which will screen on December 7 and 8, the weekend before The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey premiere.
And of course, there’s the question of which version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey to see when it premieres the following weekend – IMAX? Hfr 3D? Standard 2D? How about all of them, you know, for comparison’s sake?
So find the most comfortable theater, with the best supply of Milk Duds, and get ready to settle in for two weekends in Middle-earth.
