Actor Zoe Kravitz makes her directorial debut with psychological thriller Blink Twice, and here’s the trailer.
Actor Zoe Kravitz has turned filmmaker, having teamed up with Et Feigenbaum for Blink Twice, her directorial debut which initially went under the title Pussy Island. It hasn’t been confirmed exactly what prompted the name change, but we didn’t spot any cats in the trailer.
Anyway, the synopsis reads as follows:
When tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum) meets cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) at his fundraising gala, sparks fly. He invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. It’s paradise. Wild nights blend into sun soaked days and everyone’s having a great time. No one wants this trip to end, but as strange things start to happen, Frida begins to question her reality. There is something wrong with this place.

Ned Benson’s sophomore feature, The Greatest Hits, is a romantic drama following a young woman who travels back in time anytime she hears a song to the last time and place she heard it with her late boyfriend. It’s a charming film with an incredible soundtrack that will delight any musicophile, not that you would expect any less.
We at FandomWire spoke with Benson and the film’s composer, Ryan Lott (frontman of Son Lux and Oscar nominee for his work on Everything Everywhere All at Once), about their work on the film. Keep reading to find out what they had to say.
The Greatest Hits Interview
In The Greatest Hits, more so than many other films driven by music, the soundtrack essentially functions as a character. We asked the team behind the film where the song choices came into play — whether it was during the writing process or later in production.

How do you capture Jenne Casarotto? She was at the intersection of theatre, film and television. It all, seemingly, swirled around her.
Not just around her.
It was the brilliant team that she assembled at Casarotto Ramsay & Associates, the agency that’s been at the epicenter of UK arts culture for over three decades. Correction: The company’s reach extended far beyond the environs of London’s Soho.
One would see her in Venice, Cannes, Toronto and Sydney. One would not be at all surprised to be at a screening at, let’s say, Sundance, and there’d be a tap on the shoulder when the lights came up. “That was great stuff, wasn’t it?” She’d say gleefully.
It was a bit of a test because she’d expect you to be honest with her. Well, it was godawful, actually, and she’d nod sagely, her eyes twinkling behind her specs.

Fifteen years ago, Carey Mulligan made her first visit to the Berlin Film Festival to support her star-making turn in the dramedy An Education. Lone Scherfig’s film centers on Jenny (Mulligan), a teen in 1960s suburban London who falls for a smooth-talking older man played by Peter Sarsgaard.
Scherfig (Italian for Beginners) shared an agent with writer Nick Hornby, who penned the script based on journalist Lynn Barber’s autobiographical essay.
The movie boasted supporting roles for Emma Thompson, Alfred Molina and Rosamund Pike but had a bumpy path and lost financing prior to production. Mulligan told The Hollywood Reporter at the time that 18 months passed between her initial audition and the project getting the greenlight, leading her to take a job at a pub in the interim.
When An Education premiered at Sundance in January 2009, THR praised it as a “smart, moving but not inaccessible entry in the coming-of-age canon.

Before Jack Black took the pop culture world by storm with a breakout role in 2000's "High Fidelity," the actor, musician, and comedian had his doubts about the movie. In the latest issue of Total Film magazine, Black reflects back on his decades-long career and admits that he initially passed on the role of music junkie Barry over fears that it might negatively impact his own real-life music career.
"My friend, John Cusack, was like, 'You would be perfect for this role, Barry, in 'High Fidelity,'" Black recalled (Cusack starred in and co-wrote the movie). "I was hesitant because I was like, I don't know if I want to make a movie about rock and roll, and someone who is a critic of rock and roll." Though "High Fidelity" is a music-lovers' classic now, the film based on a Nick Hornby book features some painfully authentic music snobbery,...

In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

Exclusive: The Rolling Stones can’t get no satisfaction at FX.
A major series chronicling the band’s glory years has taken “a tumble” out of development with FX amid wider content cuts at Disney, according to the show’s producer.
Andy Harries, CEO of The Crown producer Left Bank Pictures, said he was “regrouping” on the show and having conversations about its future — both in terms of a new home and showrunner.
“It’s not in with FX [anymore], unfortunately,” Harries told Deadline. “It did take a tumble out because of the cutbacks at Disney. It was just too expensive and too ambitious for the immediate agenda.”
He added, “John Landgraf was really effusive about the scripts and ambition for the show, but he just didn’t feel that he was going to be able to get it greenlit in the next two years.”

She turns on her heels, walks over to her dapper-looking husband, exchanges a few words, and walks back to the front desk. They’ve just bought the hotel, so the clerk can leave his post and go take out the trash, thank you very much. Then the couple kisses, fireworks go off, and the credits roll.

Series Mania has always been about discovery: Of drama series as an art form, in its early days from launch in 2009; then of key players on a burgeoning international premium TV scene.
Series Mania’s International Panorama now catches a new wave of creatives transitioning from film to scripted TV – Israel’s Yaron Shani with “Innermost,” Spain’s Isaki Lacuesta and Isa Campo with episodes of “Apagón”; and highlights notable emerging auteurs: Denmark’s Kasper Møller Rask, Canada’s Alexis Durand-Brault, Spain’s Fran Araujo, Pakistan’s Assim Abassi and Germany’s Jakob and Jonas Weydemann.
But for having already bowed at national festivals, some of the 12 titles below could well have been in the running for a Competition berth.
Below, the Series Mania’s rich 2023 International Panorama:

In Funny Woman, Gemma Arterton and Barbara Parker – the Blackpool beauty queen that Arterton plays – have a similar problem. They are both funnier and smarter than everyone around them. Barbara wants to be a comedy star, but first she must outsmart legions of lascivious, patronising men in suits. Arterton plays the role with a breezy ease and natural wit, but she must glide through a stilted script inhabited by cipher-like characters.
The show, adapted from Nick Hornby’s 2014 novel, is set in the swinging Sixties. When we first meet Barbara, she’s rolling sticks of rock in a local factory, and has just been named the 1964 Blackpool Belle. “I am here, if you want to ask me anything,” she tells a photographer from the local paper, who only talks to her father and never looks at her face. In other words, Barbara will not be your conventional, sweetly smiling pin-up girl.

In her latest screen project, “Funny Woman,” Gemma Arterton (“The King’s Man”) plays a beauty queen turned comedy queen at the height of the Swinging Sixties.
Based on Nick Hornby’s book of the same name and adapted for screen by writer and comedian Morwenna Banks (“Slow Horses”), “Funny Woman” tells the story of Barbara (played by Arterton) who, after winning the title of Miss Blackpool, decamps to London to seek her fortune. There she finds herself moving into comedy before landing the lead in a hit sitcom.
The show, which Arterton also executive produced, explores stereotypes, feminism, class and societal change. “We’ve got it running through our series, this thing of, ‘Well, you can’t be funny and attractive,’ which is an outdated notion now, especially in the last 10 years, but it wasn’t for a very long time,” Arterton says. “[Society] put women in boxes like that.”

You know where you are with John Carney — and where you are is a guitar shop in a shabby Dublin back street. Ever since the writer-director broke through with 2007’s buskers-in-love hit, “Once,” he has stuck to small-scale, big-hearted romantic comedy-dramas about aspiring rock and pop musicians.
He has put enough diegetic songs in all of his films for them to count as musicals. And he has restricted himself to untouristy parts of Dublin — most of the time, anyway. “Begin Again,” starring Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo, took him to New York, but he was back in Ireland for “Sing Street” in 2016, and he returns once again for the likable “Flora and Son.”
The title notwithstanding, his new yarn isn’t really about Flora and her son, but about Flora and everyone in her life. Played by Eve Hewson (“The Knick”), Flora stomps through Dublin with a high ponytail and a low-cut top.

The last three years have been pretty rough for the world, but there’s no denying that it’s been a good time to be a Belle and Sebastian fan. In late 2020, with touring sidelined, they released an excellent live album to remind us what a dynamic concert act they’ve become; last spring, they re-emerged with A Bit of Previous, their first studio LP in seven years. Now, the Scottish indie-pop heroes are topping that with Late Developers — an all-new, even better album from the same sessions that they...

Every year we hear the same Christmas songs again and again and again, the playlist seldom changing.
While the supermarkets might stick rigidly to Slade and Wizzard, and the high street coffee shops prefer the gingerbread-and-eggnog stylings of Michael Buble, Norah Jones or the Rat Pack, variation is minimal and certain tracks just will not go away.
You might wonder how much cash the writers of the more ubiquitous seasonal standards squirrel away every year and whether it’s really possible to live on the royalties.
In Nick Hornby’s novel About a Boy (1998), Will Freeman does precisely that, living an agreeably idle bachelor life on the proceeds of a festive single written by his late father.
The truth is, it’s hard to say for sure precisely how much The Pogues or Mariah Carey have coined from their work as the Performing Right Society (Prs) does not reveal the...

Zoë Kravitz is still speaking out on what led to Hulu pulling the plug on “High Fidelity.”
The 2020 series starring Kravitz as gender-swapped record store owner Rob, who revisits her top five past heartbreaks while reeling over one particular ex (Kingsley Ben-Adir). “High Fidelity” is based on Nick Hornby novel, which was previously adapted for a 2000 film starring John Cusack. The critically acclaimed Hulu series was canceled after a single season.
“What was interesting is I had to really fight the producers in a lot of ways to let me be as toxic as she was,” Kravitz revealed GQ. “They really wanted to dull things down. Even at the end of Episode Two, when I screamed, ‘What fucking Lily girl?’ they were like, ‘Can you be less angry?’ Or when I fantasized about beating the shit out of Lily, they were like, ‘It’s so violent.'”

Now that the September and October fall film festivals have come and gone, and we’ve gotten a much better picture of what the upcoming awards landscape might look like, some may be wondering, “What about all those other movies that were released during the first eight months of the year?” There were many movies released before Labor Day, but a few of them, such as “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Elvis,” and even “The Batman” did so well in theaters and were so popular, they surely will play some part in the awards season ahead, right? How about a movie like Robert Eggers’s “The Northman,” which many people enjoyed and had such amazing crafts work?
Just because other movies are being released in the last few months of the year, that doesn’t mean that every other movie released before Labor Day will be completely forgotten,...

ITV is to examine the truth behind disgraced former TV star Rolf Harris’ abusive crimes in a two-part documentary series from All3Media-backed indie Optomen.
Rolf Harris: Hiding in Plain Sight (w/t) will speak to his victims, the police who investigated him and colleagues who worked alongside him to tell the story of the rise and fall of a TV star who came across as a non-threatening eccentric with a devoted wife.
Following the Jimmy Savile scandal, the former Animal Hospital presenter and multi-hyphenate was investigated for abusing his daughter’s friend when she was 13, and accusers then emerged stating that he molested them on the shows he worked on for years.
ITV’s films will explore Harris’ remorseless attitude in court and his wife and daughter’s decision to stand by him. He served a three year sentence in the UK and was released in 2017.

Short-format Drama
Ghy Culture & Media, a mainland China-focused entertainment company from Singapore, has launched a slate of short drama series that it says mirror the professionally-generated short format developed by Chinese platforms Douyin and Bilibili. Its first three are fantasy “Goddess Hotel,” urban fantasy-light comedy “Miss Tanya” and sci-fi comedy “Ability Bureau.” Each short drama series is slated to run for 2 or 3 seasons, with 12 to 16 episodes per season, and each episode delivered at approximately 3 minutes. Exclusive: The Batman, Star Wars, Planet of the Apes and Lord of the Rings star Andy Serkis is set to direct the feature film The Giant’s House for Brooklyn and An Education producer Wildgaze Films.
Adapted by Oscar-nominated Brit scribe Nick Hornby (Brooklyn) from Elizabeth McCracken’s lauded 1996 novel, the story follows Peggy Cort, a young librarian who prefers the company of books to people. When James — a very, very, tall young man — visits her library, the two embark on a journey neither could have predicted. At the time of publication, a Times critic called the novel “the most original and enchanting romance I have read in a long time,” while G2 wrote “Every so often a novel comes along which transcends whimsy with the beauty of its writing. Elizabeth McCracken’s small masterpiece is one of these.” The poignant romance has been in the works for some time...
