It was almost two years ago that I first met Tom Hooper. He was with Colin Firth, and their film, The King's Speech – which Hooper directed and in which Firth starred – was weeks away from winning its Oscars. It was a heady occasion. An excitable Hooper did most of the talking (Firth detests interviews) and the film – about the struggle George VI had with his speech impediment when he came to the throne in 1936 – became the unlikely winner that delighted everyone who saw it: an impossible act to follow.

Mixing mirth with magic and plenty of action, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is the story of Prince Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal), a royal with something to prove. LONDON -- Former newspaper baron Philip Graf has been appointed nonexecutive deputy chairman of media regulator Ofcom, it was announced Wednesday. The former chief executive of Trinity Mirror, publisher of tabloid the Daily Mirror, will also chair Ofcom's content board, with the responsibility for overseeing television standards. He replaces retiring deputy chairman Richard Hooper. Currently the finance head of newspaper regulator Press Complaints Commission and chairman of the Broadband Stakeholder Group -- the advisory group to the government on the promotion of broadband services -- Graf will drop both posts to take the Ofcom position when he begins his three-year term in January.

LONDON -- Richard Hooper, chairman of radio watchdog the Radio Authority, has been appointed deputy chairman of the Office of Communications (Ofcom), the super regulator due to set up business next year. The announcement was made Wednesday by Ofcom chairman David Currie, who heads Ofcom's supervision of the sweeping changes in media regulation that are expected to allow foreign ownership of British commercial television and radio assets. Hooper, who was widely tipped as a contender for the Ofcom chairmanship, has been chairman of the Radio Authority, which regulates Britain's commercial radio stations, since 1997.
