Andrei Tarkovsky’s penultimate film, 1983’s gorgeously haunting Nostalghia, also marked new territory for the director. His first film made outside the Ussr, the Cannes Best Director winner (a prize he shared with Robert Bresson for L’Argent), was also a unique collaboration with writer Tonino Guerra, frequent collaborator of Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini, and Francesco Rosi. Terence Davies, the Liverpool-born director of autobiographical memory pieces like “The Long Day Closes” and “Distant Voices, Still Lives,” has died. He was 77. The English filmmaker passed away peacefully in his home after a short illness on October 7, as confirmed on his official social media pages.

The most rudimentary research into the creative origins of the groundbreaking 1977 sci-fi flick "Star Wars" will reveal to the reader that creator George Lucas was inspired by "Flash Gordon" serials from the 1930s, as well as Akira Kurosawa's 1958 epic "The Hidden Fortress." Kurosawa's film famously opened with two clownish characters (Kamatari Fujiwara and Minoru Chiaki) who aimed to earn their fortune as samurai. After several misadventures, the peasants unwittingly become embroiled in a much larger plot about a missing princess (Misa Uehara), a war, and a brave protective warrior (Toshiro Mifune). The once-prestigious Jason Reitman has remarked that after five consecutive box office bombs he felt the need to make his own Ghostbusters to finally confront the legacy of his father Ivan. If we take this statement at face value and not as a wholly disingenuous about-face, perhaps Reitman Jr. should’ve just done the “confrontation” in-person at Reitman Sr.’s long-gone downtown Toronto restaurant where the gimmick was that the chicken was uncooked or whatever. It may have humiliated far fewer people in the process.

Fc Films announced today that they will be digitally releasing Claude Lanzmann’s landmark Holocaust documentary Shoah on March 2, 2021, marking the first time that the film will be available to own digitally and for rent in the United States and Canada.
Twelve years in the making, Shoah is Lanzmann’s monumental epic on the Holocaust and features interviews with survivors, bystanders, and perpetrators in 14 countries. The film does not contain any historical footage but rather features interviews which seek to “reincarnate” the Jewish tragedy and also visits places where the crimes took place.

Jack London was befuddled by the reception of Martin Eden. He intended the novel to be a sharp critique of individualism and was surprised when the public took his protagonist as something of a libertarian hero. Though as J. Hoberman points out in his extremely perceptive reading, the novel is more of a “tragic celebration” than a bitter condemnation. And perhaps the “misreading” of an antihero is always inevitable, the unintended seduction of an unexpected contingent of the audience.
This tension has followed Martin Eden into the 21st century. Pietro Marcello’s new adaptation moves the story from California to Italy and places it outside of time, replenishing some of the aesthetic mystery that is inevitably lost when a novel is cast, shot and projected onto a screen. The production design helps, contributing to the atmosphere at both high and low registers.

When I think of classic literature that really gets under my skin and leaves some scars, H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds is at the top of the list. The many adaptations of Wells' timeless extraterrestrial tale are just one indication of the novel's enduring legacy, and that legacy continues to grow now that the first The War of the Worlds film is coming to the Criterion Collection.

What is there yet to be done with a character like the Joker? Bruce Wayne’s bête noire has been around almost as long as the Caped Crusader himself, which is to say: a really long time. The character first appeared in Batman #1 in 1940 as war was raging in Europe and one of the biggest films of the year was by another great clown. Director Todd Phillips might not exactly have had that in mind when he sat down to write Joker–even if his new movie is rife with nods to Chaplin and American cinematic lore. Phillips will, however, have considered the performances of Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and, yes, Jared Leto as he thought of ways to turn the great super-villain into an antihero for the 99% bros (and maybe the redpill bros). With thanks to a typically dedicated, tectonic-plate-shifting Joaquin Phoenix performance, he basically pulls it off.

The ever-prolific Steven Soderbergh has confirmed production of a new film, entitled Let Them All Talk, starring Meryl Streep and Gemma Chan. Meanwhile, Soderbergh's latest, The Laundromat, is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Theater screenings of classic and cult films find themselves struggling against Disney's ownership of Fox titles, and its tightening policies regarding screening rights for the studio's older titles. Animator Richard Williams, best, known for Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and The Thief and the Cobbler, has died over the weekend. Dan Schindel of Hyperallergic writes that Williams was "an artist whose refusal to settle meant he was forever blazing toward perfection.

Two-time Oscar nominee Peter Fonda, who became a counterculture icon when he co-wrote, produced and starred in seminal 1969 road movie “Easy Rider,” then showed Hollywood he could act about three decades later in “Ulee’s Gold,” died on Friday from lung cancer at his home in Los Angeles. He was 79.
His sister Jane Fonda said in a statement, “I am very sad. He was my sweet-hearted baby brother. The talker of the family. I have had beautiful alone time with him these last days. He went out laughing.”
His wife Parky released a statement on behalf of the family, saying “In one of the saddest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our hearts…And, while we mourn the loss of this sweet and gracious man, we also wish for all to celebrate his indomitable spirit and love of life.

Jia also notes that the film is "an Eisenstein-styled film, with great subjective influence." Russian Ark filmmaker Aleksandr Sokurov has announced that he is shutting down his film foundation Primer Inotnatsii, which supports young Russian filmmakers, in response to pressure from Russia's culture ministry and a lack of funding. In 1968 Joe Dante and Jon Davison teamed up to make The Movie Orgy, a counter-culture take on 1941’s comic blitzkrieg, Hellzapoppin’. Running two hours longer than Ben-Hur, the Dante/Davison opus was an epic mash up of monster movies, kids’ shows, A-Bomb tests and toothpaste commercials – the cinematic equivalent of a Will Elder cartoon.
If it had an agenda, it was pure fun – a seven-hour blow out aimed at altered college kids weened on Mad Magazine and Famous Monsters. These days Bigfoot makes more appearances than The Movie Orgy but when one of those infrequent screenings materializes audiences are galvanized by the onslaught – and surprised by what was hiding in plain sight all the time – the supposedly buttoned-down Eisenhower era was not just deeply subversive but more than a little weird.

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

New York’s avant-garde art and film scene of the early 1960s may have been dominated by the likes of Jonas Mekas and Andy Warhol, but “Barbara Rubin and the Exploding New York Underground” offers a fascinating recontextualization of that history, focusing on young Barbara Rubin’s integral role in shaping the era’s blossoming counterculture. Chuck Smith’s documentary is at once accessible and formally daring, echoing its subject’s style while simultaneously celebrating her radical achievements. It’s an enlightening nonfiction portrait of a feminist pioneer that, in this #MeToo era, should strike a timely chord.

As part of its 50th anniversary, the Film Society of Lincoln Center has changed its name to Film at Lincoln Center. In a statement announcing the change, the organization said that the new moniker is an attempt to reflect the ways in which it has evolved along with the medium it has been celebrating for half a century. “The mission hasn’t changed, but the organization continues to expand to reflect the state of the art, the realities of the film industry, and the culture of New York City in and beyond our theaters,” that statement reads in part.
It continues, “The institution’s past as a film society is an essential part of Flc’s history, however it does not represent its evolution and growth; we are an open, inclusive home not only for cinephiles but also for budding movie lovers and beyond — anyone looking to discover something new.

The maverick independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch burst into art-house public consciousness in 1984 with his strikingly original slice-of-life comedy, Stranger Than Paradise, and we hadn’t really seen anything like it before. I remember going to see it at the little cinema across from Lincoln Center in New York City. As the guy interviewed in front of the theater in the supplemental documentary on this Criterion Collection doozy says, the queue of people to get inside was indeed full of “hipsters.” It was the picture to see if you were in tune to the downtown arts scene, avant-garde theatre/music/film/literature, and far-from-Hollywood-mainstream moviemaking.
For me, it was my favorite film of the year. Audience members who dug it found subtle humor in the three main characters’ seemingly aimless existences and motivations to live their lives in a spontaneous, who cares? fashion. Those viewers who...
