The 1999 coming-of-age comedy "American Pie" was a massive hit when it was released in 1999. Starring a who's-who of upcoming teen talent, "American Pie" delved deeply into the more embarrassing sexual details of being an adolescent boy in the modern day. There were scenes involving bodily fluids, oral sex, and multiple references to creative masturbation. While the bulk of the film -- written by Mike Herz and directed by Paul Weisz -- prided itself on aggressive raunchiness, it wisely ended on a sweet note, allowing the characters to realize that despite having had sex, they still have a lot to look forward to on their journey of growing up.
For a while in the early 2000s, Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Mena Suvari, Shannon Elizabeth, Seann William Scott, Thomas Ian Nicholas, and Natasha Lyonne were household names largely because of the "American Pie" movies. To date, the series has made $990 million.

Over the course of its 50-year existence, Troma has helped launch the careers of filmmakers like Trey Parker & Matt Stone (South Park), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Eli Roth (Hostel), along with countless actors who went on to long careers, but their biggest export by any internal metric — financial success, brand recognition, franchisability, fan base — is 1984’s The Toxic Avenger.
The film is preceded by an “extreme violence” warning. The gore is indeed graphic — the first kill features a kid’s head being run over by a car, firmly establishing that no one is safe and nothing is off limits — but it could use about a dozen more trigger warnings by today’s standards. If you can be offended, you will be offended by the boundary-pushing content that includes (but is certainly not limited to) racism, homophobia, ableism, and sexual misconduct — yet there is substance behind the sleaze.

The Toxic Avenger shared the first footage of its titular vigilante — armed with a mission and a mop — from the horror-comedy film starring Peter Dinklage.
Macon Blair’s feature reimagines the original 1984 cult-favorite movie and premiered this month at the Fantastic Fest in Austin. The Legendary Entertainment project, which has not yet announced a release date, stars Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a janitor whose employer refuses to cover treatment for his terminal illness. After robbing the company, Winston falls into toxic waste and aims to right society’s wrongs as the Toxic Avenger.
In the footage, a news anchor announces, “A group of armed extremists, the Nasty Lads — they’ve taken hostages at a Miss Meat lunchatorium downtown.” This leads to the introduction of the Toxic Avenger, a superhero who takes matters into his own hands.

The red band teaser trailer for writer/director Macon Blair’s remake of the Troma cult classic The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here) made its way online this morning – and now you can check it out in the embed above! Don’t expect to see much more of Toxie himself than we’ve already seen in the shadowy publicity still… but it does show some of the gory damage he does to evil-doers.
This movie may have a much larger budget than the previous Toxie films, but it does look like Blair was able to retain the Troma tone and sense of humor.
Blair’s version of The Toxic Avenger stars Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a stereotypical weakling who works as a janitor at Garb-x health club and is diagnosed with a terminal illness that can only be cured by an expensive treatment that his greedy, power hungry employer refuses to pay for.

The power of Lloyd Kaufman, Michael Herz, and Joe Ritter's "The Toxic Avenger" is truly remarkable if you really think about it. Troma Films' 1984 low-budget, superhero-splatter comedy launched a franchise that included an animated series, an off-Broadway rock musical, three film sequels, and now a remake from Macon Blair for Legendary Pictures. We know that production on the film wrapped sometime in 2021, the film is stacked with film fanatic favorites, and that "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage would be picking up the mop as the new Toxie. But today, after the wild and wonderful weirdos at Fantastic Fest announced that "The Toxic Avenger" would be opening this year's festival, even more exciting news came to the surface regarding the film.
"Let's start with the headline grabbers," Fantastic Fest tweeted. Opening night: 'The Toxic Avenger.' Peter Dinklage wields the mop. Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon rule.

The Toxic Avenger is a cult classic superhero black comedy film from 1984, written and directed by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz. The film tells the story of Melvin, a nerdy janitor who falls into a vat of toxic waste and becomes a grotesque mutant with superhuman strength and a sense of justice. The film spawned three sequels, a musical, a cartoon series, and a loyal fan base.
Now, Legendary Pictures is bringing The Toxic Avenger back to the big screen with a reboot that promises to be a “contemporary reimagining” of the original. The reboot is written and directed by Macon Blair, who is known for his indie films such as I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore and Blue Ruin. Blair has also collaborated with director Jeremy Saulnier on films like Green Room and Hold the Dark.

I didn’t realize it has been so long, but a year and a half has already gone by since writer/director Macon Blair wrapped production on his remake of the Troma cult classic The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here). Almost a year has passed since the movie received an R rating for “strong violence and gore, language throughout, sexual references and brief graphic nudity“. But while we continue to wait to hear a release date for this new take on The Toxic Avenger, sound editor Casey Genton, who is currently doing the press rounds for his work on John Wick: Chapter 4, said that fans will be “over the moon” for the remake, and teased a scene the cast and crew have referred to as “the butt guts scene”.

Troma Entertainment’s Lloyd Kaufman is as unique as his studio is independent. Ironic, sarcastic, or provocatively caustic, Uncle Lloyd has got something to say and gets his point across on several levels simultaneously. It’s more economical. The iconic studio is renowned for cult classics like Class of Nuke ‘Em High, Chopper Chicks in Zombietown, and Surf Nazis Must Die, but the low-budget auteur maintained a diverse career of almost 50 years of “reel independence.”
Troma was founded in 1974 by Yale film society buddies Kaufman and Michael Herz. Their movies were produced on tiny budgets and were proudly proclaimed to make only “the most offensive, tasteless films in the history of cinema.” Even the lowest of low budget studios aspire to the highest of standards, and those without any at all shoot for the moon.

New Jersey’s first superhero is being recycled, and it seems like only the truest fans are going through the trash. Legendary Pictures is remaking Troma Entertainment’s 1984 superhero splatter comedy, The Toxic Avenger. Directed by Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman, who wrote the screenplay with Joe Ritter, the original is a campy and violent low budget B-movie which became a cult phenomenon after midnight showings at the West Village’s Bleecker Street Cinema. It spawned a franchise, a cartoon, a Broadway play, and a legion of dedicated fans. Legendary’s remake was first announced in 2019 with Peter Dinklage attached.

Happy Friday, everyone! This time last week, we celebrated the amazing independent horror films that were released throughout the 1970s, so it only makes sense that we shift our focus today to all the great indie genre movies and moviemakers that helped make the ’80s one of the most unforgettable decades in horror.
Much like the 1970s, we saw a handful of eventual Masters of Horror establish themselves as genre storytellers on the indie side of things throughout the ’80s. On the East Coast, we saw an explosion of creativity come out of New York City with filmmakers such as William Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Larry Fessenden, and Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman making their feature debuts in the world of horror during the ’80s. And even though Troma Entertainment was founded in 1974, the company really came into its own during the 1980s as well. The indie studio founded by the aforementioned...

Legendary has closed a deal with Kevin Bacon to play the villain in “The Toxic Avenger” opposite Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay and Taylour Paige, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Macon Blair will write and direct the adaptation of the cult-classic franchise that centers around the iconic superhero “Toxie.” Production is set to get underway in Bulgaria later this month.

Jacob Tremblay is set to co-star alongside Peter Dinklage in Legendary’s “Toxic Avenger” film, a reboot of Troma Entertainment’s 1984 low-budget action-comedy splatter film.
The reboot will follow a mild-mannered janitor at a health club who’s pushed out of a second-story window by bullies into a vat of toxic waste. The chemicals cause him to transform into a hideously deformed mutant gifted with superhuman size and strength. He must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends and his community from the forces of corruption and greed.
The original film generated four sequels: “The Toxic Avenger Part II,” “The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie” and “Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV.” The franchise expanded into an animated children’s TV series spin-off called “Toxic Crusaders,” a musical stage production and a Marvel comic book series.

Legendary Entertainment acquired the rights to The Toxic Avenger a few years back, with plans for a reboot of the horror-comedy property having been on the cards for a while now. Unfortunately, however, movement on the project has been slow.
It snagged a director last year, though, in the form of Macon Blair, while we also know that it’ll be produced by Troma Entertainment founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, with Legendary’s Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter on board as well to help bring the project out of development hell and into theaters. And now, the film has finally found its star.
According to Deadline, Game of Thrones‘ Peter Dinklage will headline the reboot, which is being described as “a contemporary reimagining of Troma Entertainment’s successful 1984 low-budget action comedy hit.” He’s the first and only cast member to board the movie, but with an actor of his caliber now involved,...

Peter Dinklage will star in a reboot of “The Toxic Avenger” for Legendary, Variety has confirmed.
Macon Blair will write and direct what is described as a contemporary reimagining of Troma Entertainment’s 1984 hit of the same name. Dinklage will play Toxie, the superhero around which the film centers. Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz will serve as producers for Troma Entertainment.
Originally known as Melvin, the protagonist becomes disfigured when he is pushed into a vat of toxic waste, and soon assumes the moniker of Toxie. But, in order to save his son, friends and community from corruption and greed, Toxie must rise to the occasion as an underdog hero.
After the debut of the original “Toxic Avenger” film, it became a cult classic and expanded into a musical production, children’s cartoon series and Marvel comic. Toxie has also since become a mascot of sorts for Troma Entertainment.

Which may or may not be so. He also says, “Troma films do exactly what low-budget films shouldn’t do. Our films defy genre… We are the Cuisinart of cinema.” Troma Studios was founded in 1974 by Kaufman and Michael Herz. Today, Troma is known for its mutating creatures and graphic violence commingling comedy, science fiction, horror, gore, and sex in films that defy categorization. It wasn’t mutating chickens (Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead) or toxic janitors (The Toxic Avenger 1-4) that first brought Troma success, however, but...

Last December, it was reported that Legendary Entertainment had acquired the rights to The Toxic Avenger with plans for a reboot of the the horror-comedy property. And as per a new Variety report, it now seems that a writer and director has been found in one Macon Blair.
The star of Green Room might be better known for his acting career, but in 2017, Blair garnered strong reviews for his award-winning directorial feature debut I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore. The Toxic Avenger reboot, meanwhile, will be produced by Troma Entertainment founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz – who co-directed and co-produced the 1984 original – along with Legendary’s Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter.

Troma Entertainment's The Toxic Avenger has been on a road to getting rebooted. There have been people trying to get the film into production since 2010. The last we heard, Sausage Party director Conrad Vernon was attached to direct it from a script written by Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine).
Now, according to Deadline, Legendary Entertainment has acquired feature film rights to The Toxic Avenger, and the directors of the original 1984 film Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz will serve as producers on the new film. There’s no word on if Vernon or Pink are still involved though.

It looks like we might be headed for a Toxic Avenger reboot.
Somehow, against all odds, nobody has managed to reboot The Toxic Avenger yet. Oh, there have been attempts. In 2013, Arnold Schwarzenegger was attached to join a Toxic Avenger reboot where he would play Toxie's heroic coach, "The Exterminator." Thankfully, that never happened. More recently, Sausage Party director Conrad Vernon was working with writers Mike Arnold and Chris Poole (who were working off the Steve Pink/DC Mitchell draft that Arnie had been involved with) on another attempt to bring the character back to the big screen.
It would appear that all previous reboots have dissolved like so much flesh in a barrel of radioactive waste, though. Legendary Pictures has picked up the rights to The Toxic Avenger franchise, so it's inevitable that we're going to see a new movie sooner or later. Maybe. After all,...

After five decades of being one of the biggest crusaders, innovators, and purveyors of independent genre filmmaking, the legendary Lloyd Kaufman shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.
Daily Dead recently had the pleasure of speaking with “Uncle Lloyd” about TromaDance 18, which kicks off this weekend in Manhattan, and he also discussed Return to Return to Nuke ’Em High, which is officially set to premiere later this year, and how the new Troma Now streaming service is giving fans access to an amazing array of indie horror films. Suffice to say, when it comes to fighting the good fight for indie cinema, Kaufman is still happy to be in the frontlines alongside Michael Herz and his Troma family more than 40 years now.
Congrats on another year of TromaDance. Can you talk about what the mission was when you guys first started this festival nearly two decades ago, and...

I know you have just come back from the Cannes festival, where you premiered Return To Nuke ‘Em High Vol. 2 (2017). Can you tell me what your experience was like in Cannes this year?
It’s getting more and more difficult at the Cannes film festival for independent movie artists to do publicity, unless they have the hundred thousand dollar posters or the money for the big party that worships the shrine of money and jewellery and fashion. Cannes is more about the jewellery and fashion than it is about movies. It’s clear the Cannes film festival does not want any independent movie there that is not part of the elite, that’s not part of the club, that is not part of the very refined fascist mentality. I think they show good movies, but if those good movies are not in with the club, forget it. Troma is famous.

Lloyd Kaufman is among one of the most prolific pioneers of indie films, co-founding Troma Entertainment with Michael Herz in 1974. Giving audiences a variety of low-budget teenage sex comedies and arthouse horror films over the past decades, his latest movie, “Return to Return to Nuke ‘Em High aka Volume 2,” is a continuation of his 2013 explosive feature “Return to Nuke ‘Em High Volume 1.”
