“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” utilizes an interesting mix of ancient and modern for its story of demigods in the contemporary world trying to undo the petty grudges and unintended consequences of the Greek Gods’ wrath (as they always are). Production designer Dan Hennah and costume designer Tish Monaghan blend archetypical hoplite gear with goofy orange camp T-shirts; the show gives the mythological entities that Percy (Walter Scobell), Annabeth (Leah Jeffries), and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) encounter free reign to assert their personalities through clothing, style, and, in the case of Mr. D (Jason Mantzoukas), a mild addiction to Diet Coke.
So in honor of that inventive melding of ancient stories with the modern baggage of American pop culture, we found 12 different examples of depictions of the Greek gods in film and television. Now, we’re talking just the classic 12 Olympians here. You should absolutely stop reading this article and turn...

In 2004, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” became the film with joint-most Oscar wins of all time with a whopping 11 victories, matching the total tallies of both “Titanic” and “Ben-Hur.” Those 11 Academy Awards capped off a hugely successful trilogy of movies that collectively snagged 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins in total. But yet… Peter Jackson‘s film series, adapted from the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, is so, so good that, well, it could have won more. That sounds greedy and over the top, of course, but if you take a look at each film’s nominations, it’s actually very feasible that any one of the three films could have turned the bid into a win. So, with that in mind, here are five Oscar nominations that “The Lord of the Rings” films could and perhaps should have turned into victories.

The MCU made Oscar history this year as Angela Bassett earned the franchise its first-ever acting nomination for her supporting turn as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This was the sequel to “Black Panther,” which was the first film in the franchise to reap a Best Picture bid.
So often, the MCU is consigned to visual effects and sound categories at the Academy Awards. For both “Black Panther” movies to break through in key categories (plus double wins for Ruth E. Carter‘s costume design), is remarkable. Still, though, the artist and filmmaking talent on show in the MCU is often overlooked purely because they are superhero movies. With that in mind, here are five Oscars categories where the MCU deserves more attention.

Before Karl Urban was in "The Boys," he played characters who love swords and shields as much as Billy Butcher loves killing supes. There's his role as Skurge in "Thor: Ragnarok" and as Éomer in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, as well as the box-office dud "Pathfinder" or any of his various appearances in the Riddick films as Vaako. The reason for Urban's casting in this niche probably has something to do with the two television series that make up a large part of his early career: "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" and "Xena: Warrior Princess."
Although Urban first appeared in "Hercules" as Cupid in the season 3 episode "The Green Eyed Monster," he's better known for the recurring character Julius Caesar in the spin-off "Xena". The actor also played two other guest roles in "Xena": the father-drugging psychopath Mael and the nomadic human Kor.

After concluding his sixth Middle-earth film, “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” Ian McKellen praised Peter Jackson, telling Variety, “He’s invented technology to match his imagination.”
Jackson’s first “Lord of the Rings” film, “The Fellowship of the Ring,” premiered in December, 2001, and celebrates its 20th anniversary this month.
Jackson oversees five companies in Wellington, New Zealand, that were each started to fill the films’ needs:
— Weta Workshop was born for the 1989 “Meet the Feebles.” Jackson and Fran Walsh collaborated with husband-and-wife team Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger and their 5-year-old Rt Effects, who worked on models and puppets.
Weta Workshop has five divisions: Makeup and prosthetics, armor, weapons, creatures and miniature environments.
During a Variety visit a few years ago, the WW’ers were working on film and TV projects as well as museum installations, a sculpture garden, film projects and books. Richard Taylor told Variety,...

Thanks to the pandemic and the absence of VFX-intensive MCU or Dceu contenders, this season offers the most wide open race in recent memory: George Clooney’s sci-fi “The Midnight Sky,” Christopher Nolan’s time-inverted “Tenet,” Disney’s “The One and Only Ivan” hybrid zoo drama along with the live-action “Mulan” remake, and upstart monster mashup, “Love and Monsters.”
After winning the Ves top prize, “The Midnight Sky” is now the favorite. The Framestore team created high-level CG facial replacements, built the Aether ship and interior. To emulate zero-g and help to sell a pregnant astronaut floating in space (Felicity Jones was actually pregnant at the time of shooting), digital face replacements were required for the wide, full CG shots required for the walk in space. For the Arctic observatory exteriors, Industrial Light & Magic provided a pop-up version of StageCraft, its LED volume stage used on “The Mandalorian.” The highlight,...

“Love and Monsters,” the post-apocalyptic, sci-fi comedy about giant mutants, has become the surprise dark horse in the Visual Effects Oscar race. That’s because it was a standout at the virtual bake-off. “The spirit of the award should go to ‘Love and Monsters,'” said one anonymous voter. “It was fun, entertaining, well done, and relied on VFX to sell and create the experience.”
It certainly helped that “Love and Monsters” evoked the spirit of legendary Ray Harryhausen in the design of the giant creatures. “We had broad stroke personality traits for each creature [from director Michael Matthews], and that’s where the animation team went to work,” said production VFX supervisor Matt Sloan.
In “Love and Monsters,” Joel (Dylan O’Brien of “The Maze Runner”) emerges from seven years of underground isolation after a monster apocalypse and on a quest to find his girlfriend (Jessica Henwick) survives a series of creature...

“I was absolutely flabbergasted to see my name pop up at 2 a.m. as I must admit I was awake,” production designer Ra Vincent admits about his second career Oscar nomination for his work on “Jojo Rabbit,” which he shares with set decorator Nora Sopková. “It was a spectacular surprise because I didn’t think, in such illustrious company that we would be making it in for production design,” he says. Watch our exclusive video interview with Vincent above.
In writer/director Taika Waititi‘s satirical “Jojo Rabbit,” Johannes “Jojo” Betzler, a young boy (Roman Griffin Davis) during WW2 Germany discovers that his single mother (Scarlett Johansson) has been hiding a Jewish girl, Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie) in the attic of their home. Jojo befriends Elsa and confronts his own prejudices while also interacting with his imaginary friend, a neurotic and moronic Adolf Hitler (Waititi), who follows him throughout his journey of self-discovery.

When “Dora the Explorer” made her debut on Nickelodeon in 2000, she not only became the first animated Latina character in a leading role but also birthed what would become the longest-running American TV show that featured characters speaking Spanish. (The show is still running on Nickelodeon with new episodes).
Nineteen years later, Dora gets the live-action treatment in “Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” and despite an awkward first act, the film harkens back to the family-adventure genre that today’s parents can recall from their own childhoods.
Dora and her parents (Michael Peña and Eva Longoria) have lived in the jungles of South America for all of Dora’s life. The jungle is her home, her school and her playground, and like many young teenagers she runs through her life documenting everything with a GoPro strapped on, speaking to an invisible audience about the wonders of exploring the rain forest.

As a parent, I've watched a Lot of Dora the Explorer. I watched it 6-7 years ago with my son (when he was a toddler) and I'm watching it every day now with my daughter (currently a toddler). While the outfit is a very literal translation from the cartoon, it still feels off. Part of which has to do with the new High School setting, which is...

Thor: Ragnarok, the colorful new planet Sakaar may have felt strangely familiar to fans of comic books. "Sakaar is retro and strongly influenced by the comic book art that Jack Kirby did in the '60s, '70s and '80s," says production designer Dan Hennah, a five-time Academy Award nominee who claimed an Oscar for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Kirby, who died in 1994, didn't actually dream up Sakaar himself — the planet wasn't conceived until 2006 for the Planet Hulk comic book...

Over the past 17 years, Dan Hennah has had quite a career working as either the art director or production designer on most of Peter Jackson‘s films. Their memorable collaboration on “King Kong” as well as the “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies have rewarded him with five Oscar nominations including a win for “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.” Now, Hennah and co-production designer Ra Vincent have brought their talents to Taiki Waititi’s “Thor: Ragnarok”, which is arguably one of Marvel Studios’ most critically acclaimed films and a surefire blockbuster following its $121 million domestic opening this past weekend.

The most impressive thing about this new trailer for Alice Through the Looking Glass is the way The Muppets director James Bobin and new-to-this-franchise production designer Dan Hennah was able to mimic Tim Burton's distinctive style from the previous movie. This still doesn't look like a world I want to spend another second of my life dedicated to watching, because practically everything about this goes against my personal tastes in a huge way. Opening in a mental ward? Check. Johnny Depp being goofy? Check. Topsy turvy landscapes, gigantic CGI nonsense, and characters I don't care about? Check, check, check.
But hey, at least we get to hear the late Alan Rickman speak once again.
Alice Through the Looking Glass hits theaters on May 27th.

Grandeur often rules the day in Best Production Design, which awards the men and women responsible for a movie's set design and construction. The category typically favors period pieces, though at least one fantasy title tends to find a home every year. It is rare for truly contemporary films to be nominated. However, the category is more open to fantasy and contemporary pieces than its cousin Best Costume Design. (Last year was the first year the costume designers had their own branch, but no easily discernible new trends could be observed in my opinion.) Recent years have also suggested openness to CGI-complemented work ("Life of Pi" and "Gravity" immediately jump to mind). On that note, it's worth mentioning that the Art Directors Guild has implemented a new rule somewhat under the radar for its precursor awards this season. According to the new provision, period films must now have the majority...

At long last, the sequel to Disney’s massively successful, if narratively weak, Alice in Wonderland is starting to roll cameras, with James Bobin replacing Tim Burton in the director’s chair. It took a suprisingly long time for this next chapter of the planned franchise to get off the ground, considering the first film broke $1 billion at the box office, but a press release indicates that filming is now underway.
Officially titled Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, the follow-up finds the original actors returning to their roles, with a bevy of new stars joining both the live-action and voice casts. What the sequel is exactly about is still foggy, but the story is said to “revisit Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories with an all-new new tale that travels back to Underland—and back in Time.”

Disney met with some success in their live-action version of Alice in Wonderland (with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter), and since the film released, talk of a sequel has been on-going. Now, it's finally moved into production as the cast and crew have gathered together in anticipation of it's May 2016 release. Disney announced cameras have started rolling with a new cast list confirming both old and new members of the cast coming to the production.
I wasn't all that thrilled with Alice in Wonderland when it released. Not that it was a bad movie, I just didn't find it all that special or great. So it's tough to muster up much enthusiasm for this sequel, despite the impressive cast coming back for it. From the press release:

The 40th Annual Saturn Awards were held this past Thursday, June 26th, and a what great show it was from (as Johnny Carson used to say) "beautiful downtown Burbank"! Here's the full list of winners and more.
Actually, we were high above the city at the famous Castaway restaurant and banquet hall. The Saturn Awards has been held here for the past few years, and it really is a fabulous venue with the best views of the San Fernando Valley anywhere.
Among the winners are Dread Central favorites "The Walking Dead," "Hannibal," The Conjuring, and Vera Farmiga's no holds barred performance as Norma Bates in "Bates Motel." The eye candy and updates from the carpet come from director Neil Marshall; the Curse of Chucky crew - Don Mancini, Brad Dourif, and Fiona Dourif; Insidious 3's Lin Shaye; and more. Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and New Line Cinema jointly announced on Friday that the much-anticipated final film in Peter Jackson’s trilogy adaptation of the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, has now been titled The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies.
The film, previously titled “The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” will be released worldwide December 17, 2014, with select international territories releasing on December 10, 2014.
Peter Jackson stated, “Our journey to make ‘The Hobbit’ Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. ‘There and Back Again’ felt like the right name for the second of a two-film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced — after all, Bilbo has already arrived...

This year’s Saturn Award nominations have been announced and include a number of horror movie and TV releases, such as The Conjuring and The Walking Dead:
“Los Angeles – February, 2014 – Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity and Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug both received 8 nominations as the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films today announced nominations for the 40th Annual Saturn Awards, which will be presented in June.
Other major contenders that packed a real punch were The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, Star Trek into Darkness, The Book Thief, Her, Oz The Great and Powerful and Ron Howard’s Rush. Also making a strong showing was the folk musical fable Inside Llewyn Davis, which proves that the Coen Brothers are a genre onto their own. Over the weekend the Art Directors Guild (Adg) handed out their crop of awards for Best Production Design in Period, Contemporary and Fantasy film and the winners in their respective categories were Catherine Martin for The Great Gatsby, K.K. Barrett for Her and Andy Nicholson for Gravity. All three winners are nominated for an Oscar (see the full list of nominees here) and after these results I've updated my predictions from 12 Years a Slave to Gatsby. See those predictions here. Speaking of 12 Years a Slave, the USC Scripters Award was also handed out over the weekend and screenwriter John Ridley joined family members of nineteenth-century author Solomon Northup to receive the 26th-annual USC Libraries Scripter Award for his adaptation of Northup's memoir. "Until I read Solomon's memoir, I didn't know what being a writer was all about," Ridley said in his acceptance speech. "The way that Solomon wrote, the clarity with which he wrote,...

I had a great time at last night's Critics' Choice Movie Awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. I'm a proud voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and I always look forward to our Movie Awards!
It was a great night with an equally great party vibe, and all the stars were relaxed as they imbibe on cocktails and eat fantastic food.
But the best part of the evening was the awards show itself (I always feel that the Critics' Choice is a much better Oscar predictor than the Golden Globes) where Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" triumphed in all the technical categories including Best Director and "12 Years a Slave" received the top honor of Best Picture with Lupita Nyong'o beating "American Hustle's" Jennifer Lawrence for the Best Supporting Actress trophy.

The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...

I've made a couple updates to my 2014 Oscar predictions in the Best Production Design and Best Adapted Screenplay categories as a pair of new pieces of "food for thought" arrived this morning in the form of nominations from the Art Directors Guild and the 26th USC Scripter Award nominees were announced. As far as changes made as a result of these announcements, most will be found in my Best Production Design predictions, which I hadn't updated in ages so it meant adding films including Her (which is now a predicted nominee) and The Wolf of Wall Street. In the screenplay categories I've left Best Original Screenplay alone, while I have a good feeling about my predicted nominees for Adapted Screenplay where the question I have is will it be Terence Winter's Wolf of Wall Street that gets a nom or Tracy Letts' August: Osage Countyc Right now I'm going with August.

Steve McQueen and David O Russell's movies each land 13 nominations, while Gravity takes 10 and four other key contenders make do with six
Two of the key bruisers of contemporary cinema are to square up against each other at this year's Critics Circle awards. In the red corner: Steve McQueen, whose 12 Years a Slave – a devastating drama about deep south slavery – has landed 13 nominations.
