As a teen just getting into the world of low-budget horror movies, and straight to VHS fare, there were a handful of directors whose work I would buy and/or rent without fail and without any prior knowledge (besides the spiel on the back of the box) of what i was getting into. One of those directors was Fred Olen Ray, the genius behind such films as Scalps, Star Slammer, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Evil Toons, Cyclone and the awesome Scream Queen Hot Tub Party. However in the intervening years it’s safe to say I haven’t had the urge to watch as many of his flicks as I did in the 80s/90s heyday...

Some franchises will never die. They just multiply.
The last time audiences got to see an Amityville Horror movie in theaters was the 2005 remake starring Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George. Now two Amityvilles will be arriving in 2012.
Dimension and Miramax will release The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes first on January 27, 2012. The two studios announced the project over the weekend at the Cannes Film Festival, HitFix reports. According to the press release, The Lost Tapes is a "found footage" horror movie that follows "an ambitious female television news intern, on the verge of breaking the most famous haunted house case in the world, leading a team of journalists, clergymen, and paranormal researchers into an investigation of the bizarre events that will come to be known as 'The Amityville Horror' ... only to unwittingly open a door to the unreal that she may never be able to close."

A spin-off to 1979's film "The Amityville Horror" is in development. Hannibal Classics has announced that they are currently developing "Amityville: The Legacy 3D", a big screen version of John G. Jones' novel "Amityville: The Evil Escapes".
The horror movie will be produced by Richard Rionda Del Castro and Paul Mason, who co-produced 2005's "The Amityville Horror", a remake to the original film of the same title. Steve B. Harris will join Del Castro and Mason as producer, in addition to serving as the scribe along with Andrew Helm. The production is expected to start this fall to meet the 2012 release schedule.
The plot detail, issued in a press release via Hannibal Classics' official site, says that the story opens with six priests coming into an abandoned house. Unfortunately, Father Kibbler, the youngest priest, is attacked by an unseen demon after he followed a sound into the attic.

The new film will be based on the book Amityville: The Evil Escapes by John G. Jones, which also inspired some of the sequels. Andrew Helm and Steve B. Harris are set to write the script, with Harris, Richard Rionda Del Castro and Paul Mason (who also produced the 2005 remake) producing. No director or cast is attached at this time. Legacy will be the tenth installment in the Amityville series, which includes four previous feature films, four direct-to-video releases, and a made-for-tv movie. It will also be the second one in 3D -- the third film, Amityville 3-D, came out during the '80s 3D craze. Read more after the jump. Hannibal Classics is moving forward with "Amityville: The Legacy 3D", a new horror feature based on the haunted house franchise.
Unlike the 2005 remake starring Ryan Reynolds, this will Not be a new version of the story in the original Jay Anson 1997 novel "The Amityville Horror" or its famous 1979 film adaptation.
Instead, Steve B. Harris and Andrew Helm are adapting the script based on John G. Jones' 1988 novel 'Amityville: The Evil Escapes', the fourth book in the series. A lot of the elements of the book were adapted for the screen before - in 1989's "Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes" and 1992's "Amityville: It's About Time".
The storyline follows Nancy and Michael Evans, a couple touched by a family tragedy when Nancy's sister Carolyn committed suicide, leaving them to look after her kids. Moving into Carolyn's suburban home to fix it up and then sell it, Nancy begins to sense an evil presence,...

Andrew Helm and Harris are scripting with filmin to begin this fall for a 2012 release.
The original film freaked me out. I have never seen the 2005 Ryan Reynolds-starring remake, but have heard good things. I have a feeling that every classic horror film will get the remake/reboot treatment in 3D. I personally wish they would come up with new films, but this may turn out to be interesting.
What are your thoughts on this news?...

Hannibal Classics has announced that a new chapter to the "Amityville" tale is about to be written. Amityville: The Legacy 3D is based on the book written by Andrew Helm and Steve B. Harris. And after reading the plot details, I kinda question one thing...if this house is so evil, I mean for the past 30 years it's been tormenting every family that resided there, then why not just tear down that F*cking house?? Amityville: The Legacy 3D is set to…...

All of these competing Amityville Horror projects have me extremely confused. From what I understand, there are rights to the book and rights to the actual story as told by George Lutz. Therefore, it's hard for me to understand who actually controls these rights, especially since there's already The Amityville Tapes stuck at MGM and the documentary My Amityville Horror in production. Adding to that list is Hannibal Classics' Amityville: The Legacy 3D, which is a feature film based on the book "Amityville: The Evil Escapes" (also the title of the 1989 made-for-tv movie) by John G. Jones. My guess is Hannibal owns the rights to this book specifically? Adapted by Andrew Helm and Steve B. Harris, the film is said to be going into production this coming September, even though a director has yet to be attached.
