Over the last six years, Leslie Liao has been living a double life.
By day, she’s an employee in the Hr department at Netflix — by night, a fast-rising stand-up comic. “I tried to keep both parts of my life very compartmentalized,” Liao tells Deadline of her rise from beginner to emerging comic during her time at the streamer. “So, it almost was like a Superman-Clark Kent thing.”
Now, though, Liao is going full Superman, after landing a stand-up special with the company she was working for in an entirely different capacity.
Liao is among the rising comedic stars doing short sets in Verified Stand-Up, a two-part special that dropped on the service November 28th. She first came to Netflix’s attention, as a performer, while performing in front of its stand-up team at L.A. venue Dynasty Typewriter.
While working at Netflix, Liao says, she hasn’t actively hid her artistic aspirations.

The comedy world has been blessed with countless brilliant individuals whose laughter and wit have brightened our lives. Tragically, some of the most gifted stand-ups and comic actors have been taken from us too soon. Their stories are a mixture of laughter, pain, and heartache, leaving indelible marks on the comedy world. In this blog post, we pay tribute to the comedians who died young, exploring their lives, personal struggles, and the legacies they left behind.

The first thing Mike Birbiglia does before staging one of his one-man shows at a new venue is sit in every seat. “I try to understand what the sightlines are, how they can hear. I’m obsessed with it because that’s all we have,” he says over Zoom in October, hiding in daughter Oona’s bedroom from the noise of Brooklyn construction outside. “The intimacy is everything.”
Birbiglia is known as a comedian, a filmmaker (2016’s Don’t Think Twice), a podcaster and a for-hire actor — recurring on Billions and, more recently, making a memorable cameo in Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero” music video. But it’s his plays, narrative interpretations of stand-up, that have always distinguished him from his peers. He’s now 44 and committed to shirking Hollywood for his life in Brooklyn with wife Jen Stein (the poet who publishes under the pen name J.

Just a few weeks before she was supposed to start filming “Starstruck” in March 2020, Rose Matafeo found herself onstage at London’s “Magic Mike: Live” having a surreal, more than slightly panicked conversation with a gyrating Australian dancer.
“As he was making me touch his chest, he was like, ‘So do you think you’re gonna go back? The flights are all being canceled!’” Matafeo, who’s from New Zealand, recalls with a laugh that rings with disbelief even two years later. “It was the weirdest experience.”
After a lengthy delay, she still got to shoot the first season of “Starstruck” later that year — and, not for nothing, come out the other side with a new appreciation for “Magic Mike: Live” that would eventually make it into the second season, which drops Thursday on HBO Max.
As she did on that stage, Matafeo’s spent most of her life finding comedy wherever she can.

New rule: Adam Driver has to host Saturday Night Live at least once a year.
That’s the main takeaway after Driver’s third successful stint at the center of the show. Even if this episode had its share of shocking duds, the ratio between good and bad content skewed far more towards the former than the latter. This is an episode in which some great material didn’t make the cut below: the incredible Cecily Strong/Mikey Day material in “The Science Room,” Driver’s invocation of Abraham H.

On paper, Valee and Matt Ox shouldn’t work. One half of the duo has spent a year building and deconstructing flows like a carpenter, the other is a prepubescent rapper trying to turn a meme-able moment into a sustainable career. In the case of “Awesome,” though, the Chicago and Philly rapper concoct 2018’s version of “Otis.” Or, at the very least, “That’s My Bitch.”
The unsung hero of “Awesome” is longtime Valee producer Chasethemoney’s skeleton-rattling beat. Minimal, epic and satisfyingly slow, the instrumental leaves room for both rappers waltz over the beat,...

New material from comedian Mitch Hedberg could be on the way, and fans have his widow Lynn Shawcroft to thank for it. Shawcroft recently wrote a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter that detailed her disparity after Hedberg's death, and how she became a compulsive hoarder after he passed. As sad as that is, she noted there is a silver lining in the fact that she has a treasure trove of unreleased jokes, notes, audio recordings and footage that fans have never seen before:
Mitch was constantly jotting ideas onto paper. I have boxes and boxes of his notebooks, envelopes stuffed with hotel pads and scribbled-on napkins. I even found an airplane barf bag covered with notes. When he wasn’t writing, he was talking into a microcassette recorder, so I also have boxes of microtapes of him practicing and perfecting his material — material that’s never been heard. And then there’s the footage.

“For so many people, learning is a chore, but laughing is not. If we can combine learning with laughing, you can teach anybody, anything,” says famed American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who does exactly that as host of the National Geographic talk show StarTalk, which returns on Sunday, Oct. 1 with a new season of facts, laughs and plenty of A-list guests.
While the show regularly features scientific commentary and cosmic queries, it’s all delivered with a comedic punch. And in today’s polarizing political climate, Tyson says “it’s a comedian’s obligation to challenge social, cultural and political norms.” If they are not, then no one is being challenged to think, he adds.
So it makes sense then that so many funny people, including Ben Stiller, Jay Leno, Larry Wilmore and Whoopi Goldberg, have stopped by the show. “When a comedian is on the show as a guest, I don't seek...

Chicago – When comedian/writer/director Mike Birbiglia is in his element, as during the interviews he conducted at The iO Theater in Chicago, he is relaxed and ardently philosophical. He has written and directed a new film, “Don’t Think Twice,” which is about a improvisation comedy troupe, but it’s also about life.
“Don’t Think Twice” – besides being a clever play on the famous Bob Dylan song title – is essentially about the stages of life, and how we react to our own ambitions. The members of the comedy troupe – portrayed by (clockwise in the picture below, starting top left) Mike Birbiglia, Kate Miccuci, Chris Gethard, Gillian Jacobs, Keegan-Michael Key and Tami Sagner – are at a crossroads in their professional and personal lives, and have to deal with the sudden uptick of fame to one of their members. As Birbiglia did with his first feature, ‘Sleepwalk with Me,’ he...

The late comedian Mitch Hedberg had a joke in his act about how every stand-up comic in Hollywood has to be an actor, at least in some capacity. Just being a comedian, even a great one, isn’t enough. And it’s one of the few professions that forces this kind of duality. As Hedberg put it, “It’s as though I was a cook and I worked my ass off to become a good cook and they said, ‘All right, you’re a cook… can you farm?'”
It aptly describes many comics’ aversion to getting wrapped up in the movie business. After all, if you’re a stellar comedian, why not simply continue doing what you do best and leave the acting to the professionals?
If only there were no truth to Hedberg’s joke, and comics weren’t pushed into being actors, the general public...

Kevin Pollak's documentary "Misery Loves Comedy" has a cute pun of a title that also draws attention to the film's primary flaw. Had Pollak just called his first directing foray "My Friends Talk About Comedy" or "White Comedians Love Misery," I probably could have just felt that this was one person polling a bunch of chums on a subject of mutual interest and accepted its limitations. But "Misery Loves Comedy" spends its entire runtime on a series of talking-head interviews with various comedians and on grand pronouncement after another, different variably famous stand-ups keep saying what "comedians" are like and what "comedy" is about. And given the composition of Pollak's panel of experts, I'm afraid that's ludicrous. With dozens of comics participating, the total number of African-American comics featured in the entire documentary? One. Whoopi Goldberg is brought in to summarize one Richard Pryor routine. She does that and nothing more.

It was American humorist Erma Bombeck who is credited is saying that “there is a thin line that separates laughter and pain, comedy and tragedy, humor and hurt.” In the documentary program of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, this is a topic oft explored. From the quite literal exploration in Kevin Pollak’s Misery Loves Comedy to the less overt themes in Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of the National Lampoon, there were many instances of both pain and laughter, especially in the creation of great comedy. It is through these docs that Sundance explored the minds and eccentricities behind what makes us laugh. Let’s explore. Misery Loves Comedy In what began as a Kickstarter project for Kevin Pollak, the actor, comedian, filmmaker, podcaster and everyman of entertainment struggles to keep himself unheard as he interviews many of his most revered contemporaries about their lives in comedy. In addition to still-life model at MoMA and dance leader at Ebertfest, Tilda Swinton has now added “Redditeer” to her resume. She was on hand Monday for an Ama to promote Snowpiercer and put on her signature arty charm, earning a few nicknames (T-Swinny), declaring her love of Alt-j and revealing she’s actually a clone of David Bowie in the process. Here’s a few of some her best answers:
Have you ever considered changing your name (or at least how it appears in print) to the tilde symbol “~” a la Prince?
Frankly no, but since you mention it.. ~ xo
(Reddit also had some fun with this, calling her “~Swinton”, “Approximately Swinton”, “On the Order of Swinton”, “Deviantart user Swinton” and “Not Swinton”)
The Grand Budapest Hotel and Only Lovers Left Alive both seem like they must have been very fun movies to work on, was that the case?...

I hope you came here already knowing Tilda Swinton is perhaps the definitive bad-ass movie star. What hasn't she done? Who hasn't she played? When haven't we been stunned by her commitment, coolness, and ferocious ebullience? There is no adequate parallel to Tilda Swinton, unless you count a photo-negative of Grace Jones. The Oscar-winning actress conducted an "Ask Me Anything" Reddit forum where she kept on being awesome. Here are all the awesome thing she said. 1. She listed her favorite comedians: "Amy Schumer!! Bill Murray Mitch Hedberg Will Ferrell Bill Hader Chris Morris Graham Linehan John Finnemore and many many many many many more Comedy = lifeblood" 2. She compared moviemaking to summer camp. "Working with both Jim Jarmusch and Wes Anderson is like the summer camp of dreams.. with significant themic differences.. Wes Camp means all staying in a big house together and eating round one big table every night, none...

Comedy can be difficult to appreciate during initial encounters. A lot of the comedy that is considered top class stuff today was dismissed as weird and sometimes irritating when it was first experimented with. You see this all the time: Will Ferrell’s comedy is still a point of annoyance for many, although Anchorman has established itself as enough of a comedy institution for this generation, this despite a preliminary cold reaction back in 2004, that it has a sequel set for release this winter. Other dated movies like Wet Hot American Summer are starting to take on new identities of comedy hits after their stars have endeared themselves to a wider audience.

Last March saw the seventh anniversary of Mitch Hedberg's untimely passing, and in the years since, his brilliantly constructed jokes have achieved comedy immortality. And like any great artist, he had a hearty mix of inspiration.

Countless notebooks full of the scribblings that led to an all-to-short body of work are shown in the fourth installment of Scott Moran's "Modern Comedian," which should resonate with any artist who takes their work seriously.

No one heckles quite like hecklers at a comedy show. You wouldn't hear someone yell their opinions at a solo jazz performer or a ballerina, but when an audience sees a funny person standing on stage with a mic, there's often one or two people who demand to have their voices (usually drunk voices) heard.
The recent Daniel Tosh incident reminds us that the way a comedian responds to a heckler can become an issue outside of the club. There's also a great documentary about hecklers on Netflix that highlights the many ways hecklers can be dealt with, and a wealth of video evidence on YouTube.
Below you'll see 19 examples of how comedians can handle a heckler, including brutal takedowns, full-on breakdowns and some ridiculously witty retorts. From Mitch Hedberg's gentle chat to Bill Hicks' expletive-filled rant, there's more than one way to handle a heckler -- some more effective than others.

Comedian Sheng Wang is a Taiwanese Texan whose slow, deliberate pace masks a sharp wit. He uses personal experiences and observations to craft confidently absurd, carefully constructed jokes that are completely his own."Mitch Hedberg was especially enlightening," Wang says, "but I draw inspiration from all great comics. My comedy is mostly dry with splashes of wet excitement. The performance is driven by my writing, so I spend a lot of time and energy figuring out the specific structure and words in a joke."Wang started performing comedy about nine years ago in the San Francisco Bay area, after graduating with a business degree from Uc Berkeley. He moved to New York in 2009 and he says he can now be seen on stage most often at The Creek and the Cave in Long Island City, N.Y. He has also performed at the Montreal Just for Laughs festival, toured with the Comedians.

So this was an unexpected surprise. One of our favorite comics of all time, Mitch Hedberg, was trending on Google this morning. At first we thought it was the anniversary of his death, but it turns out that it was actually March 29. So the only thing we can figure is that in true Hedberg fashion, the story was just a little slow in developing.
For those of you unfamiliar, Mitch Hedberg was stoner comic who was part Steven Wright, part Cheech & Chong and part George Carlin. He had numerous comedy specials and guest stared on programs like "That '70s Show" and "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist." He died in 2005 at age 37 from a cocaine and heroin overdose.
Here are a couple of clips of the late, great (and we can't underscore that enough) Mitch Hedberg.

It's hard to believe that it has been 7 years since Mitch Hedberg tragically passed away. Hedberg was one of the most distinctive stand-ups of his generation, with a style and delivery that are almost impossible to replicate. He was just 37 when he died in 2005, but his material has only continued to increase in popularity in the years since.
To commemorate his passing, we thought of places, events or common situations in which you could bust out a Hedberg joke and immediately lighten the mood. So, next time you're on an escalator, checking into a hotel or eating a slice of pizza, remember these classic Hedberg one-liners to tell to your friends. They're guaranteed to get a good laugh.

Normally art is only really funny when it's really bad. That is why we are especially excited to see the return of the exhibition "Is This Thing On?" in which artists pay tribute to their favorite comedians with works that are hilarious. You'll actually be able to laugh in an art gallery, and not because of the pretentious thing that person standing next to you just said!
All the greats are represented, including Woody Allen, Stephen Colbert, Mitch Hedberg and Tobias Funke; some are reliving their signature roles while others are caricatured to the extreme.
Okay, now for the best part: The exhibition will feature a Weird Al Yankovic career retrospective screen-print set, consisting of nine screen prints in honor of a different Weird Al song. In fact, Mr. Al will host the opening which is on March 9th at 7 pm.
For those of you in Los Angeles, 'Is This Thing On?...

Las Vegas -- Internet radio site Pandora was one of the first companies to embrace Facebook's instant personalization push, a controversial feature that outraged privacy advocates and allowed websites to tap into personal information users had shared with Facebook.
But Pandora now seems to have had a change of heart when it comes to Facebook's approach to sharing.
The social networking site recently unveiled a "new class of social apps" that, once approved by a user, will automatically publish all of his or her activity on the app to Facebook -- every article read, every song listened to, every television show watched. While other music streaming services such as Spotify, Rdio and Slacker have launched apps that take advantage of these capabilities, Pandora has so far steered clear of Facebook's latest move to increase the information its users post on the site.

As any entertainer will attest, making someone laugh is always harder than making someone cry. It takes an entirely different skill set and taps into an entirely different, and arguably, more complicated psyche. (What makes one person roll with delight could make another roll their eyes with disgust.) Of course, if you’re one of the great stand-up comics, you can accomplish both: Making your audience laugh so hard they cry.
Then again, having to choose your favorite stand-up comic of all-time might be just as difficult a task. Do you go with the rule-breakers of comedy who not only made you laugh,...

Comedian Jasper Redd is an intriguing mass of contradictions. If he had his druthers, his entire routine would be all about race, but he counts Jerry Seinfeld's trivial observations as a major influence. Even though he's often dressed up in Western attire to celebrate his Tennessee heritage, he's as savvy about the vagaries of Hollywood as any longtime Los Angeleno. And even though he's being doing comedy for almost a decade professionally, he admits that it's only recently that he's felt confident about being a stand-up.
We were lucky enough to see Redd for the first time a few years ago when he performed in Los Angeles to commemorate the release of "Frankenhood," a straight-to-dvd movie that was his first - and as of today, last - acting job. Since then, he's been traveling across the country to various venues, including college campuses, and bringing with him a comedic...

Last week on "America's Got Talent," we saw Anna Graceman, Sandou Trio Russian bar, Snap Boogie and the Miami All-Stars advance. Who will go through this week? Also - what in God's name is Nick Cannon wearing tonight? Somewhere Craig Sager is taking notes.
1. Attack Dance Crew
The crew tonight dances in some fun neon and black tracksuit things and their routine is much trickier than I remember them doing in the past. They work the musical cues very well and the stunts are neat, plus everybody is really synchronized in the wide shots. Good start to the show. Not the most amazing thing I've ever seen, but very solid. First, Piers rightly calls out Nick on his outfit. Hee. But Piers also says it was a bit of a mess in parts. Hmph. Sharon pans them a bit too. I wonder why I liked them so much. I really...

Could the late comedians Richard Pryor, Sam Kinison, Lenny Bruce, Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Hicks or Mitch Hedberg do their acts if they were brought back from the dead? What about Doug Stanhope? Or Dave Attell? Many comics make their living being hugely offensive. What separates the pros from the hacks is how they deliver the material and contextually wrap it up to make a point. What comedians say on stage now is so scrutinized for hate language, it's a miracle insult King Don Rickles is still allowed to perform. Tracy Morgan learned the hard way that dissing gay people in his act has repercussions, and even his fellow comics are taking him to task. Chris Rock took...

Mitch Hedberg is one of those comedians that you either get or you don't. His comedic timing, non-sequiturs, and one liners are unique to the world of stand up and his talent for such has never been matched. Hedberg died in 2005 of a presumed drug overdose (heroin and cocaine) although this has never been officially confirmed by his estate. Some rumors of the cause of death involve a heart disease that Hedberg had been born with.

Mitch Hedberg always looked like he'd just happily stepped out of a tour bus in the early 1970s, with his tinted aviator sunglasses, his affinity for plaid shirts and his long, shaggy brown hair. The beloved comedian, who performed ten times on "Letterman" and was once dubbed the next Jerry Seinfeld by Time magazine, would step onstage, look down at his shoes, and launch into his legendary one-liners with an inimitable non-sequitur, slacker style, seemingly lost in his own world that nobody else quite understood.
Hedberg's life was cut short in 2005 when he died of a heart attack resulting from "multiple drug toxicity," including cocaine and heroin, which may have been further aggravated by a previously diagnosed heart defect.
With his death, he left behind legions of adoring fans -- Lewis Black, Conan O'Brien, and David Letterman are among the many renowned comics who have publicly sung his praises --...

Mitch Hedberg had a joke about stand-up comedians becoming actors. "When you're a comedian in Hollywood, everybody wants you to do things besides comedy," Hedberg said. "They say, 'Alright, you're a stand-up comedian. Can you act? Can you write? Write us a script.' They want me to do things related to comedy, but not comedy. That's not fair. It's as though I wanted to be a cook and I worked my ass off to become a good cook. 'Alright, you're a cook. Can you farm?'" The point is, just because somebody can be funny on a stage, doesn't mean they're right for the movies. I think that applies perfectly to the following story. Variety reports that Jeff Foxworthy, who has been a stand-up comedian since the mid-80s, has signed a deal to star in his first non-voice over feature film. While Foxworthy has had roles in movies...

Hello my darling asymmetrical haircuts and skinny jeans. Listen, you'll never win Hipster Bingo if you can't readily identify a hipster when you see one. Here's an exhaustive breakdown of hipster components. It's also exhausting. So much effort goes into looking like you don't care! (The High Definite)
James Franco, the uber hipster, has been posting some twee behind-the-scenes footage of Oscar rehearsals. This one, of Franco and Anne Hathaway rehearsing a Grease number looks like it was shot by Zapruder. I will say, Anne is Rocking the Olivia Newton-John "Bad Sandy" look. (NY Mag)
But, you know, some people don't even need skin tight Sandy pants to look good. My favorite non-Pajiba film reviewer, Stephanie Zacharek, once described Eva Mendes' anatomy thusly, "[her] derrière looks as if it were plucked from God's personal peach orchard." That was six years ago. . .I'll never forget. No wonder someone stole Eva's nudie photos.

Message received, ladies! John Mayer reportedly wants to “change people’s perspective” after several on-street encounters with upset female fans. “Girls came up and yelled at him, saying he was a horrible person,” a source told Us Magazine about a recent night on the town. “Girls asked how he could treat women the way he did. People would tell him exactly what they thought of him.” What was the last straw for the heartthrob’s rep? Taylor Swift‘s “Dear John”? Mayer’s cruel comments on Jennifer Aniston? The Jessica Simpson “sexual napalm” thing? We’d guess it was all of the above.
While we’re too busy laughing on the sidelines to take the gig, we do have some free advice for Mr. Mayer. 1) Lose this long haired goatee look of late. You’re trying for Johnny Depp but looking Mitch Hedberg. 2) Get in a long-term relationship with one...

[1] I wasn't planning to write about Gallery1988's first annual "Is This Thing On" art show as it really has little connection to movies or television (or so I thought... the above piece featuring Judd Apatow mashed-up with the infamous Star Trek Tribbles episode is a fine example of this). The show, co-sponsored by FunnyOrDie, features over 100 artists, each creating pieces that are portraits of their favorite funny people, both beloved comics of yesteryear and emerging superstars. The line up of comedians depicted include: Chris Farley, Will Ferrel, Richard Pryor, Don Rickles, Paul Reubens,Tim & Eric, Nick Kroll, Demetri Martin, Chris Rock, Whitney Cummings, Jon Lovitz, Sam Kinison, Bill Murray, Woody Allen, Colin Quinn, Bill Hicks, Howard Stern, Judd Apatow, Chris Hardwick, Marc Maron, Scott Auckerman, David Spade, Andy Dick, Lenny Bruce, Adam Sandler, Amy Sedaris, Lisa Lampanelli, David Cross, Andy Kaufman, Christopher Guest, Mr. Show, Rob Corddry and Children's Hospital,...

That quote above? The one about enthusiasm and hatreds? That's what Brad Bird said to Patton Oswalt when casting him in Ratatouille. Do you know Patton? Of course you do. He's only the funniest living American stand-up comedian (I had to qualify that because, well, in truth, to me, the tip top twins of comedy are Mitch Hedberg and Eddie Izzard). Comedy is entirely subjective, this is truth, but you Pajiban readers, you fans of both geek and cutting wordsmithery, must worship at the feet of The Mighty Oswalt, no? If you have somehow missed him, here's an introductory glimpse. One of my favorite bits. (Ignore the fact that Patton apparently visited Sammy Davis Jr.'s Ye Oldey Timey Haberdashery of Shiny Suit Jackets.)
Did you not giggle? Possibly even chuckle? Mayhap muster a guffaw? I've seen Patton live more than any other comedian, author or musician. This summer he...

Another Year
Directed by: Mike Leigh
Starring: Jim Broadbent, Ruth Sheen, Lesley Manville
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: December 29, 2010 (limited)
Trailer Score: 7/10
My Thoughts: Publishing a review of a trailer for a film with an expired release date, may seem daft, but as Another Year is a limited release, and is being released here in Milwaukee next week — just a few weeks after it’s initial U.S. release — I thought it would be appropriate, as it’s sure to soon expand (in a limited fashion) to other Milwaukee-sized cities across the states. This trailer was originally unveiled way back in August of 2010, but to my knowledge, up to this point, it’s been more or less off the Tsr radar.
So, enough with defending this post — let’s get on with it!
I thought this trailer was very well done, if not little bit heavy-handed in its sentimentality — mostly thanks to the music therein.

There would be no greater compliment than to be insulted by Greg Giraldo. Ask Joan Rivers, David Hasselhoff, Bob Saget, or any one of the many celebrities the master insult comic ribbed during Comedy Central’s countless roasts. (Or, for that matter, any heckler who dared to challenge Giraldo during one of his acts.) Giraldo could call you “a sunken-eyed monster who’s obsessed with jewelry…it’s like The Lord of the Rings” — Rivers was the proud recipient of that quote, one of the very few printable options out there — and all you could do is laugh, shrug your shoulders,...

The late Mitch Hedberg once joked that comedians can never just be great at stand-up; they’re always asked to act or write or “do shit that’s related to comedy, but it’s not comedy, man.” (Hedberg compared it to a being a really good cook and being asked, “Can you farm?”) That’s been the persistent problem for Norm MacDonald, who in the right context, can be the funniest man on the planet, but who rarely gets the chance to show what he can do—or perhaps he does, and just doesn’t care to play along. MacDonald ...

Chicago — For 19 years now (off and on), the basic theme of Lollapalooza has always seemed to be that there was no theme, that Perry Farrell could take as many incongruous bands as he wanted, throw them all on a bill, and let the chips fall where they may. And by that standard, Lollapalooza 2010 is shaping up to be a real classic.
Because for every streamlined, pneumonic tune by Devo on Friday (August 6), there was an equally rusted-out, hairy one by the Black Keys. For every smooth, soulful moment by Raphael Saadiq, there was a spastic, shameless one by Foxy Shazam. It was basically opposite day. And that was perhaps best exemplified — and amplified — by the night's headliners,...

How funny exactly does a sitcom have to be? It's hard to escape the notion that the most important thing for any comedy is going to be the quality of its jokes, the whether-you-laugh aspect of things. That being said, some of my favorite stand-up comedians (Lenny Bruce, George Carlin) could talk for a while without any jokes being said, or anything particularly funny at all about their diatribes. They were still great, but it wasn't the laughs alone that you listened for. On the other hand, you won't find out much about Mitch Hedberg's politics from listening to his...
