Jacques Tati's Mon oncle AFI Fest 2010 on Wednesday, Nov. 10. Among the highlights are: A 60-minute presentation by Buzz Hays, Senior Vice President of the Sony 3D Technology Center, which will include a 20-minute preview of Tron: Legacy, featuring Garrett Hedlund and Jeff Bridges; Jean-Luc Godard's Film Socialism (with "Navajo English subtitles"), about — well, your guess is as good as mine; and John Wells' corporate-downsizing drama The Company Men, which stars Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, and Rosemary DeWitt. And finally, Jacques Tati's masterful, Academy Award-winning 1958 classic Mon oncle, in my invariably humble opinion the wittiest, most poetic, most visually arresting "silent" comedy ever made. The holy grail for the cost of converting a feature to stereoscopic 3-D appears to be $50,000-$75,000 per minute, according to Buzz Hays, senior producer of 3-D stereoscopic feature films at Sony Pictures Imageworks.
This range, he said, looks like the point where companies are willing to invest in 3-D, though he emphasized that production needs to be made more efficient to meet this goal.
Costs, time and technology were among the topics during a Frank Discussion about the 2-D-to-3-D stereoscopic conversion process, presented Thursday by the Visual Effects Society Education/Technology Committee. The standing-room-only event was staged for members of the VES, DGA and Producers Guild of America.
Addressing scheduling, Hays estimated a conversion could be a six- to nine-month process at Imageworks but admitted that the company already has ramped up for the work. Here's the kicker: Hayes estimated that the conversion process of a feature if handled by a single person could equate to roughly 26,000 days.

Sony Pictures Imageworks recently added 3-D stereoscopic production to its pipeline and has tapped Buzz Hays as senior producer to oversee the production unit. Hays' first projects are the 3-D stereoscopic adaptations of Columbia Pictures' Monster House for Real D theaters and Sony Pictures Animation's Open Season in Imax 3-D. "Throughout his career, Buzz has always been focused on delivering a premium entertainment experience for audiences," SPI president Tim Sarnoff said. "In the late '80s, he was responsible for THX engineering and installation, which, from a sonic perspective, blew audiences away. In his newly announced position, he is leading the Imageworks 3-D team to create an even more immersive moviegoing experience for consumers."...
