“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” and “Asteroid City” all earned nominations from the Critics Choice Awards for Best Production Design. That bodes well for each film’s Oscar chances this year. But before we get too ahead of ourselves by predicting who might win this category, let’s take a look back at the last 10 Oscar winners for Best Production Design.
We’re going to take a look at the academy’s tastes here to see what type of films in what type of setting they nominate most. Then, we’ll try to apply those findings to this year’s race as we scrutinize the movies hoping for a nomination in this design category. Here we go.
These 10 winners seem like totally different movies but a closer look does show some similarities. Firstly, seven out of the 10 are set in the real world. “The Shape of Water...

Below-the-line categories at the Oscars just don’t get the attention they deserve. The artistry on display helps to bring to life a movie. Visual effects are such a key part of the storytelling of “A New Hope.” Costume design is vital to the storytelling of “Phantom Thread.” And production design is so key in “Parasite,” “Avatar,” and “The Lord of the Rings” in so many different ways.
With that in mind, let’s take a look a closer look at some of the below-the-line categories, starting here with Best Production Design. We’re going to look at the last 10 winners in this category to work out if there is a pattern in the way the academy awards certain winners. They love biopics in the acting categories, for example, so what are they partial to in Production Design? Take a look at the below chart.

The MCU made Oscar history this year as Angela Bassett earned the franchise its first-ever acting nomination for her supporting turn as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This was the sequel to “Black Panther,” which was the first film in the franchise to reap a Best Picture bid.
So often, the MCU is consigned to visual effects and sound categories at the Academy Awards. For both “Black Panther” movies to break through in key categories (plus double wins for Ruth E. Carter‘s costume design), is remarkable. Still, though, the artist and filmmaking talent on show in the MCU is often overlooked purely because they are superhero movies. With that in mind, here are five Oscars categories where the MCU deserves more attention.

When cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw was initially approached to join “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” she was already familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Arkapaw served as the cinematographer on the first season of the Marvel series “Loki” and scored one of the acclaimed show’s six Emmy Award nominations for her work. But “Wakanda Forever” presented a much greater challenge for Arkawpaw and “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler: a large-scale Marvel sequel that also reckoned with the death of star Chadwick Boseman and included intimate moments of mourning and unflinching depictions of grief.
“It was very important to Ryan to kind of have this fog or texture of grief that would be a throughline in the visuals and would be felt,” Arkapaw tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “I think it’s always important to listen to your director emotionally, and see what he or she wants to bring to the table,...

A few weekends back “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” exploded into theaters with a 330 million global opening. Since then it’s soared past the 350 million mark domestically, making this as good a time as any to examine the Oscar prospects for Marvel Studio’s latest.
See‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ director tells Oscar voters about losing Chadwick Boseman: ‘To know him was to love him’ [Watch]
The biggest question some may have is whether “Wakanda Forever” might break into the Best Picture race, since “Black Panther” was nominated there. It also won the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award for best ensemble cast in 2019. Let’s put that crucial Best Picture conversation on the shelf for now, since it’s probably wiser to address some of the movie’s other possibilities first. As background, reviews for “Wakanda Forever” were generally favorable, with 84 on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore from audiences. (“Black Panther...

The long-delayed but hotly anticipated “Black Widow” from Marvel Studios finally gets its bow before critics, garnering positive reviews thus far. However, with the Academy moving back to a guaranteed 10 nominees in best picture, and seemingly open to more populist choices in Hollywood, as seen with James Mangold’s “Logan” (2017) getting mentioned for adapted screenplay and Todd Phillips’ “Joker” (2019) leading the nomination tally in its respective year, could there be awards hope for the first lady of the Avengers? With the raves coming in for standout Florence Pugh, could there be an avenue for acting recognition?

Disney announced at the D23 Expo on Saturday that it has set May 6, 2022, as the release date for Black Panther 2. Director Ryan Coolger, who returns to helm and write the sequel to the No. 4-grossing film of all time in North America, revealed the news onstage at the Anaheim Convention Center alongside Marvel’s Kevin Feige.
Coogler’s return was confirmed in October as details of the sequel emerged after the original became a massive hit, grossing $1.35 billion at the worldwide box office. It’s No. 11 on the all-time list globally.
The success made a follow-up movie a given; Marvel usually signs its key cast to deals involving multiple movies because of the scope of its cinematic universe. Chadwick Boseman starred in the first pic along with Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Latitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett, Winston Duke, Forest Whitaker and Sterling K. Brown.

A minor note on Sunday’s much-discussed, host-free, wonderfully diverse Oscar ceremony: It was awfully rough on collaborators.
Time and again, the stage was filled with winners who smiled, nodded and got barely a word in edgewise, as a colleague sopped up the limelight.
Maybe there was a designated speaker rule. But if so, not everyone honored it. The sound mixers for Bohemian Rhapsody — Paul Massey, Tim Cavagin and John Casali — did the old-style Three Musketeers thing, for instance, each taking a few seconds to thank family, friends and colleagues. The Green Book team similarly spread their time among three speakers.
But those were rare birds on a night when several winning teams had a member who turned out to be considerably more equal than the others, never mind those old saws about film being the most collaborative of arts.

Triumph for African American talent, Marvel Studios
On a momentous night for racial diversity, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther made history with a trio of Oscars, two of which struck a blow for African Americans.
Both production designer Hannah Beachler and costume designer Ruth E. Carter became the first African Americans to win in their respective categories. In the case of Beachler, she was also the first African American to be nominated for her category.

It was a crafts celebration at the 91st Academy Awards Sunday night, marked by the wonders of “Black Panther’s” Wakanda and “Bohemian Rhapsody’s” nostalgic rock trip.
“Black Panther” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” shared the night with three craft Oscars apiece. The McU struck Oscar gold for the first time with its superhero phenomenon, taking production design (designer Hannah Beachler and art director Jay Hart ), costume design (designer Ruth Carter), and score (composer Ludwig Göransson).
And the popular Freddie Mercury biopic (starring Oscar winner Rami Malek) offered a powerful, arena-like cinematic experience, snagging awards for editor John Ottman (going without a director in post-production) in tandem with the sound editing and mixing teams.
But for Beachler and Carter (previously nominated for “Amistad” and “Malcolm X”), it was a significant diversity breakthrough, as they became the first blacks to win in their respective crafts. They helped director Ryan Coogler achieve his...

Women roared at the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday, picking up a record 15 trophies — the most in Oscar history. With 39 male winners this year, that means women earned nearly 27.8 percent of the statuettes handed out.
The previous record came in both 2007 and 2015, when women earned a total of 12 statuettes, including for the two actress categories.
And it comes after just six women earned Oscars at last year’s ceremony, compared with 33 male winners. That’s little more than 15 percent. It was the lowest number of female winners since 2012’s show (the 85th annual Academy Awards), when only four women brought home statuettes.

The 91st Annual Academy Awards are finally here, and who knows how they’re going to play out? Ironically like many of the films it’ll be honoring, the yearlong buildup and campaign for the event has been plagued by backstage controversies – with the hiring and prompt resignation of would-be Mc Kevin Hart to the debacles concerning its runtime, it looks like the host-less Oscars won’t be giving out jet skis for shortest acceptance speech this year.
With that in mind, the purpose of the Academy Awards is to celebrate 2018’s greatest movies; and following the trend of the show’s last several seasons, this year’s nominees are in themselves historic, not only for their diversity, but also for the genres and studios that they represent.

After the extraordinary year that Black Panther just had, Ryan Coogler’s latest feature didn’t need any Oscar recognition to secure its status as a pop culture phenomenon, but as Michael B. Jordan said back in November, landing a Best Picture nomination is still some “amazing icing on the cake” for one of 2018’s biggest movies.
Speaking to the New York Times, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige admitted to setting his alarm to watch this morning’s nominations, and the early start was surely worth it. Among the seven nominations that Black Panther received was a prestigious Best Picture nod, making T’Challa’s solo debut the first comic book movie to earn an Academy Award nomination in this category.

Screenwriter Tony McNamara and production designer Fiona Crombie have scored their first Academy Award nominations for director Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite.
McNamara and co-writer Deborah Davis are in contention for best original screenplay while Crombie is nominated for best production design, shared with her colleague Alice Felton for set decoration.
Fox Searchlight’s The Favorite and Netflix’s Roma lead the field with 10 nominations apiece, followed by Warner Bros’ A Star Is Born and Annapurna Pictures’ Vice with eight.
Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther scored seven, although not for director Ryan Coogler, and Focus Features’ BlacKkKlansman got six.
The contenders for best picture are Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star is Born and Vice.
Advocates for gender equality will be incensed about the total absence of nominations for female directors, cinematographers, film editors, composers and visual effects artists.

Updated with all winners: Alfonso Cuarón’s personal drama Roma from Netflix led all winners at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday, taking four total wins including the marquee Best Picture honor at the televised ceremony at Barker Hanger in Santa Monica.
Cuarón was busy onstage during a show in which the Broadcast Film Critics Association and Broadcast Television Journalists Association mostly spread the love among its 42 total film and TV categories. The Mexican filmmaker also won Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Foreign Film trophies; the question is whether we are seeing a preview of the Oscars in a month and a half — last year, the Critics’ Choice show chose 17 of 19 eventual Oscar winners.
“This bunch of Mexican are not as bad as sometimes they are portrayed,” Cuarón said onstage, accepting the last award. He thanked Netflix for “bringing this film to the people in the mainstream.”
