Back in 2019, “Iron Man 3” production executive Chris Fenton filed an explosive lawsuit against former employer Dmg Entertainment, a once-highflying company that bridged Hollywood movies and Chinese distribution.
After a legal back and forth that included a Dmg countersuit that was later tossed, Fenton’s case is finally headed to trial next week and is expected to expose some of the opaque ways China did business in Hollywood before tensions between the U.S. and the communist superpower boiled over in 2021, leading studios to reassess their plans for the market. On Oct. 23, Fenton v. Dmg is scheduled to begin in California Superior Court, with Robert Downey Jr. and tentpole producer Neal Moritz expected to be on the witness list.
Although Fenton, a former William Morris agent who worked at Dmg for 17 years, is a respected member of the Hollywood community with a Washington, D.C., presence as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations,...

Sony’s Tom Hanks World War II movie Greyhound is jumping from its May 8 weekend to June 12, as a means to tee off before the Father’s Day weekend of June 19-21. I hear the pic’s rescheduling has nothing to do with coronavirus fears which are weighing on many distribs’ minds, but rather it being an opportune time to capture sons and fathers while also capitalizing on the Flag Day holiday on June 14.
The pic, directed by Aaron Schneider, and also adapted by Hanks from the C.S. Forester novel, follows a Us Navy skipper who must lead an Allied convoy being stalked by Nazi U-boat wolf packs. Elisabeth Shue also stars. Gary Goetzman produces. EPs are Jason Cloth, David Coatsworth, Aaron L. Gilbert, Sanping Han, Michael Jackman, Milan Popelka, Aaron Ryder, Steve Shareshian, and Alex Zhang.

Despite sharing a border, China and India have always been two separate universes when it comes to the film business, each with their own production industries, star systems and distribution networks, and precious little collaboration in between.
Executives on both sides of the Himalayas are aware that co-productions that work in both territories could potentially reach an audience of 2.5 billion people. And that official Chinese co-productions are exempt from the country’s quota system. But for many years, nobody could figure out how to make this happen. Chinese censorship, different working practices and the difficulties of matching star power from each side have thwarted previous attempts.

“I am a member of that legendary species: the nouveau riche. Before, you had the Japanese, the Saudis, the Russians. And now it’s me.” The Chinese banker with the line in Boris Johnson buffoonery has the room falling about with laughter, but his game is deadly serious. He’s part of a special delegation at the Montreal world film festival, dangling millions of dollars for “cultural investments” in front of western film-makers. Near him on the dais, a greying, creamy-skinned man in rimless specs musters the odd half-smile, like he’s heard the speech before. Hiding in plain sight, this is probably the most powerful individual in cinema today.

The Chinese government is expected to announce later this week that a second theatrical distribution licence will be awarded to China National Culture & Art Corporation (Cncac).
The move would effectively break up the monopoly held by China Film Group (Cfg) and Huaxia Film Distribution in the theatrical distribution of Us and other foreign films.
China agreed to bring in other companies to distribute foreign movies when the annual import quota was expanded to 34 revenue-sharing films at the beginning of 2012. However, it was widely thought at the time that some private companies might win a licence to distribute revenue-sharing films.
The state-backed Cncac, which is under China’s Ministry of Culture, currently imports foreign theatre, arts events, concerts and music into China. China’s Ministry of Propaganda is expected to make an announcement to Chinese press about the new licence on Thursday.

Aliens, ninjas, mutant girls, soft porn, ass-kicking martial arts, unclassifiable weirdness ... the New York Asian Film Festival truly has something for everyone, and these elements are perennials of this festival that is now in its ninth year. Such creatures and film genres, in fact, should by now be expected sights at the Nyaff.
However, one of the true oddities of this year's selections is Ye Daying's Tian An Men, a slightly modernized slice of straight-up Prc propaganda created for last year's 60th anniversary of the 1949 founding of the People's Republic of China.
Tian An Men is very much a throwback to the Chinese state productions of the 1950s and 1960s which glorified China with heroic episodes from the country's history. The most famous cinematic product of last year's celebration/nostalgia trip in China was Huang Jianxin and Han Sanping's The Founding of a Republic, a star-studded super-production that detailed...

As the People's Republic of China approaches its 60th anniversary, the Communist Party is attempting to woo the nation's youth with a new movie that's celebrity-rich.
According to an Associated Press report, Jian Guo Da Ye, which translates to The Founding of a Republic, opens in theatres in two weeks. It will retell the story of the Communist Party's triumph, and feature brief appearances by Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Stephen Chow, and many others.
The film represents a tactical shift for China's ruling party with regards to getting its message out. In the recent past, the nation's state-supported film and TV industry produced predictable fare on conservative budgets, which mostly appealed to older audiences. Those films, featuring dowdy revolutionary heroes, were considered out of touch with the more slick, well-dressed action stars and pop singers coming out of Hong Kong and South Korea.
