When professional photojournalist Drew Fellman travelled to Borneo over 17 years ago and visited renowned primatologist Birute Galdikas' research station, the trip left an unshakable impression on him, one that would keep him looking for a way to properly share the amazing sights, sounds, people and young animals he encountered during his stay in Southeast Asia for almost two decades.
With a background in travel and documentary photography, and having dabbled in film with IMAX pioneers Howard Hall and Toni Myers, it didn't take Fellman too long to figure out that a documentary film about the animal orphan rehabilitation program he witnessed would be the ideal way to give audiences an intimate look at these amazing beasts in their natural habitats. And so Born To Be Wild was, well, born.
We had the chance to speak to Fellman, on the phone from the IMAX building in Santa Monica, about why this movie changed his life,...

When I saw Under the Sea on IMAX 3D last year, I couldn't help but feel like it was more attraction than education, like a special show tucked in a coveted wing of an aquarium, or even a museum, where IMAX nature movies often play in. The fact that it was a 3-D experience projected on a giant screen certainly contributed to that sense of spectacle.
So it was with both curiosity and reserve that I revisited this 40-minute documentary on Blu-ray, knowing full well that the two aspects that impressed the most, namely the size of the screen and that pop of extra dimension would be absent.
As expected, some of the charm is lost with those absence. The meat of the documentary is really more in its presentation than its content. After all, why else would you lug that monstrous IMAX camera deep underwater in remote exotic seas...

Chicago – It’s easy to see why filmmakers like James Cameron are constantly inspired by the life forms that exist underwater. They are as fascinating and mysterious as any otherworldly being dreamed up a science-fiction author. BBC’s brilliant series, “The Blue Planet,” unearthed deep-sea specimens that continue to haunt my nightmares. It proved that monsters do sometimes hide in the dark, and exist only to feed (one fish had teeth so large that it couldn’t even close its mouth).
Of course, such images are guaranteed to terrify a G-rated audience, and “IMAX Under the Sea” offers a more cuddly, yet no less spectacular, look at creatures of the deep. It is filmmaker Howard Hall’s follow-up to his previous family-friendly documentary, “Deep Sea 3D,” and was released theatrically as “Under the Sea 3D.” Though no home entertainment system can come close to equaling the experience provided by IMAX 3D,...

To fully explore the undersea world of exotic locales like New Guinea, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef, you could put on scuba gear and hop into the water. Or for the next closest thing, there’s “IMAX Under the Sea”, which besides keeping you dry, also comes with voiceover work by funnyman Jim Carrey, here dispensing with the yuk-yuks as our narrator and guide. Written and directed by IMAX veteran Howard Hall, the IMAX 3D shot “Under the Sea” is now available (as of 3/10) from IMAX and Warner Home Videos on DVD and Blu-ray. Imagine a world of incredible color and beauty. Of crabs wearing jellyfish for hats. Of fish disguised as frogs, stones and shag carpets. Of a kaleidoscope of underwater life. Now, go explore it! The makers of Deep Sea and Into the Deep take you into tropical waters alive with adventure: the Great Barrier Reef and other South Pacific realms.

Under the Sea 3-D
Narrated by Jim Carrey
Directed by Howard Hall
Rated G
The new IMAX film, Under the Sea 3-D is everything you'd expect it to be while delivering nothing you'd ever think you'd see. There have been nature films for decades, and since Jacques Cousteau first went underwater in the 1940s, the rules haven't changed much.
IMAX has been bringing us 3-D educational films for probably a decade or more. So in Under the Sea, you know you're going to watch beautiful nautical creatures in their natural environment.
Where the film surprises you is in what species it follows.
The setting is everything, so IMAX takes us to Puapua New Guinea, which narrator Jim Carrey tells us is home to some of the most varied and most plentiful species of marine life in the world. And they don't disappoint.
The odds are against you ever having come...

TORONTO -- Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet will narrate and Danny Elfman will score the new giant-screen 3-D documentary Deep Sea 3D, Imax and Warner Bros. Pictures said Wednesday. Toronto-based Imax said Depp and Winslet will co-narrate the 3-D film, set amid underwater creatures that inhabit the oceans' depths. Deep Sea 3D represents the first original Imax film to be scored by Elfman, who recently provided the music for Warner Bros.' Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which appeared on Imax screens in a digitally remastered 3D version. The documentary, set for a March 3 release exclusively on Imax screens, was shot by Howard Hall, the director of Imax's first underwater 3-D film, 1991's Into the Deep.
