DC fans had their minds blown when it was announced a month ago that an origins movie for the Joker was in the works. Sitting outside the DC Extended Universe, the film is set to feature a new actor as the Clown Prince of Crime in place of Jared Leto. Furthermore, The Hangover’s Todd Phillips is directing with legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese on hand to produce.
By leveraging Scorsese’s involvement in the spinoff project, Warner has reportedly set sights on Leonardo DiCaprio for the title role, which would mark the actor’s first major foray into Hollywood’s bustling superhero genre. It would undoubtedly be a historic coup for the studio, but at least at the time of writing, there’s been no mention of Warner Bros. tabling an official deal between both parties. Sincere condolences, Stephen King fans. My words greet you today as a pulverizer of hope; a dasher of dreams. Here to confirm that Hollywood’s adaptation of The Dark Tower – which some have waited *literal* decades to behold – will be forgotten in the smallest possible fraction of that timeframe. A property so fantastical, yet a film so uninspired. Monochromatic color palettes, sloppy animation hidden behind pitch-blackness, obvious impairment by an overabundance of decision makers – laziness and complication, in other words. Director Nikolaj Arcel blends dystopian weirdness and temporal hellbeasts until all that remains is an emulsified, grey gunk, which is then forced down our throats for 95 minutes. Flavor gone, identifiers eviscerated.
We open on Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor), a troubled boy who suffers from canonical nightmares. Those of a rugged “Gunslinger” and a ghoulish “Man In Black.” Beings with fake flesh and child imprisonment camps. They wage war in Jake’s dreams,...

We are less than a month away from the release of one of the most anticipated blockbusters of this year. The long-awaited movie adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series has taken its sweet time in getting to us, but this new trailer shows that they are going firmly for big screen spectacle.
Watch the previous trailer for The Dark Tower here
The embittered battle between Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey forms the majority of this promo, with a few dizzying CG landscape present to give us a view of the mighty scope of the project. The rabid fans of the book series have already been warned not to expect a direct adaptation of the first book in the series, entitled The Gunslinger, but rather a sequel to the events therein. If the film does well then we can expect many more sequels, prequels from the team.

After what seems like years of waiting, the first official look at the eagerly-anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower has finally arrived with our very first glimpse at the new trailer, which you can view below!
Idris Elba (Star Trek Beyond) stars in the lead role as Roland Deschain who is “on a quest to reach the “Dark Tower” that resides in End-World and reach the nexus point between time and space that he hopes will save all existence from extinction.” But in hot pursuit is vicious sorcerer named Walter Padick (Oscar Winner Matthew McConaughey), an evil sorcerer who stands in his way.
The film has taken quite a while to make it onto the big screen, even with the delays to the new interpretation that set it back from its original February 2017 release. Indeed, in 2007 it was looking like J.J. Abrams was set...

Jennifer Connelly is the latest addition to producer James Cameron and director Robert Rodriguez's feature film adaptation of Alita: Battle Angel. Connelly will be playing a villain in the film, and she joins the previously cast Rosa Salazar in the title role, Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali, Jackie Earl Haley, and Ed Skrein.
The movie is currently shooting in Texas, and the studio is really hoping that they have another big sci-fi franchise on their hands. The film is based on the manga created by Yukito Kishiro. Cameron has been preparing this property to be developed into a film for years, and finally, it's happening.
Set in the 26th century, Battle Angel tells the story of Alita, "an amnesiac female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by a doctor. The rebuilt Alita, remembering only her training in a deadly martial art, becomes a hunter-warrior, tracking down and eliminating vicious criminals.

A flawed masterpiece, writer-director-star Nate Parker’s The Birth Of A Nation is based on the true tale of Nat Turner, a bible-thumping, visionary slave who led a bloody uprising in Virginia in 1831. As a child, Nat was bound for more than picking cotton. With the encouragement of his owner’s nurturing wife (Penelope Ann Miller), Nat studied the Bible, which leads to him growing up (played by Parker) as one of the few educated slaves on the struggling plantation run by Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer). Samuel rents Nat out to other plantation owners to preach, earning a name as someone who can keep slaves mollified despite their abuse. Nat crosses a line by baptizing a white man which leads to a whipping and the epiphany that he can no longer stand by while blacks are mistreated. He and a band of fellow slaves ambush and murder over 50 white folks...

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Mahershala Ali is currently in talks to join the cast of 20th Century Fox's highly ambitious action sci-fi film Alita: Battle Angel. He joins a cast led by Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Death Cure) as the title character, Christoph Waltz (Spectre), Jackie Earl Haley (Preacher), and Ed Skrein (Deadpool). Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) is helming the feature, which is an adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's popular manga series Battle Angel Alita, with 3x Academy Award-winner James Cameron (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) and Academy Award-winner Jon Landau (Avatar) on-board as producers. Through House of Cards and Marvel’s Luke Cage, Mahershala Ali has turned in a pair of emphatic villain performances – standing tall to both Frank Underwood and Mike Colter’s Hero for Hire, no less – and it seems neither have gone unnoticed.

Production is due to commence in Austin, Texas later this month, hence the casting spree, and if a deal places the House of Cards alum will be signing on to play Vector, one of the many villains lining the ranks of Robert Rodriguez’s feature.

Add Keean Johnson’s name to the growing ensemble attached to star in Alita: Battle Angel.
The Hollywood Reporter broke news of Johnson’s casting over the weekend, confirming that the former Nashville star saw off strong competition from both Douglas Booth and Jack Lowden to land the role of Hugo, a young man with a deep understanding of the gladiatorial game known as Motorball. Upon crossing paths with Alita, played here by Maze Runner actress Rosa Salazar, the two strike up a friendship, which is something our title cyborg will be cherishing considering Robert Rodriguez’s adaptation will have her locking horns with both Ed Skrein’s Zapan – Damascus blade and all – and a cybernetic villain played by Preacher star Jackie Earl Haley.

One of the most celebrated film makers of the last four decades has died. Here’s how the New York Times reported it….
Curtis Hanson, the film director whose adaptation of the James Ellroy noir novel “L.A. Confidential” won him an Academy Award, died on Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 71.
The death was confirmed by Officer Jenny Houser, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department. She said that officers had been called to the house shortly before 5 p.m., and that Mr. Hanson had died of natural causes.
Julie Mann, his business manager, said Mr. Hanson had been struggling for some time with a form of dementia.
Let’s take a look at his long career. His first screen credit is for helping to adapt H.P. Lovecraft’s short story in the 1970 American International Pictures’ The Dunwich Horror starring Sandra Dee and Dean Stockwell.

He’s dabbled in the realm of superhuman mercenaries with middling reboot The Transporter Refueled, not to mention going toe-to-toe with the Merc With a Mouth himself in Deadpool; now, Ed Skrein is bound for the dystopian future initially dreamed up by manga artist Yukito Kishiro for Alita: Battle Angel.
News hails from The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that Skrein has closed a deal to join the long-gestating adaptation as, you guessed it, a villain – specifically Zapan, a nefarious cyborg who holds control of a powerful weapon called the Damascus blade. Details are thin beyond that; all we know for sure is that he’ll be rubbing shoulders with Maze Runner actress Rosa Salazar, who is attached to the title role of a female cyborg, Christoph Waltz and Preacher star Jackie Earl Haley.

The most powerful voices on stage at The Birth Of A Nation press conference Sunday at the Toronto International Film Festival—an event that made headlines simply for the fact that it was taking place—were the women. The likes of Gabrielle Union, Aunjanue Ellis, and Penelope Ann Miller were the strongest advocates for the importance of the film—even after the past rape allegation against its writer, director, and star Nate Parker was brought up.
That didn’t come, however, until about 23 minutes into the talk, which lasted over an hour. For the first part of the event the cast on stage mused on the impact of telling the story of Nat Turner’s slave rebellion, their characters, and the process of making the film. Jackie Earl Haley effusively praised Parker’s directorial abilities.

I don’t know if you remember, but I was not the biggest advocate for the reboot of RoboCop. I did, however, promise that I would give it a shot, and I have to say that I am happy I did. I walked in determined to hate the movie and walked out pleasantly surprised.
Director José Padilha took on the daunting task of rebooting a cult classic, and I feel that he hit the mark. A lot of people seated around me were RoboCop superfans, and you could tell that they were expecting a word for word remake with updated graphics. If that is what you are looking for, that is not what you are going to get. For you superfans out there, Padilha did not make a movie that totally ignores the original. There is plenty that I would like to say about this, but I will let you...

2013 was a great year for science-fiction films. We had superheroes (Thor: The Dark World, Man of Steel, Iron Man 3), the end of the world (The World’s End, This is the End), aliens (Riddick, Dark Skies, The Host), dystopias (Oblivion, Elysium, Ender’s Game, Pacific Rim), space exploration (Europa Report, Gravity), and another Star Trek film. This year’s crop of upcoming sci-fi films are full to the brim with goodies, including the return of some old friends and plenty of mind-blowing scenarios coming from some of the best minds the genre has to offer.

After starring in numerous Toho-produced entries in his regular series (most of them better than decent), Godzilla decided to give America one more chance to get his story right.

The latest trailer for MGM/Sony remake of 1987 Paul Verhoeven's Sci-Fi classic has arrived, but does it raise the bar?
The latest trailer for the upcoming remake of Robocop hit the internet today and it has literally reignited my interest in this oft-delayed project. The film, which takes place in a near-future America run by big business, stars Joel Kinneman as the titual cyborg that rebels against his programming. The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Micheal Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earl Haley and Jay Baruchel. Directed By Jose Padilla (Elite Squad, Secrets of The Tribe), Robocop lands in theaters just in time for Valentines Day on Feburary 12th, 2014
The official synposis is below:
In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years – and it’s meant billions for OmniCorp’s bottom line.

Oftentimes, casting an actor can be an easy job. You want scenery-chewing? Visit Daniel Day-Lewis. You want stern Britishness? Judi Dench is your woman. Need a nutcase, stat? Jackie Earl Haley’s on standby. Really, it could not be any easier for casting directors – if they want somebody who’s neurotic, you can bet damn sure that there’s an actor out there who’s got a reputation for doing such a thing (Christopher Walken’s the bet here).
Yet sometimes, film-makers just can’t resist throwing us a curveball, casting stars so against type, they might as well be in another continent. Granted, this can go very wrong, very quickly – see Lindsay Lohan in The Canyons – but occasionally, someone out there in the industry sees something that we just couldn’t. Whether it was that an actor used to playing buttoned-down parts can drop some comedy like it isn’t even a thing,...

I recently had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with the lovely Amanda Wyss from A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). You might not know her name but you will definitely recognize her from the role of “Tina” in that film. She has the pleasure of being known as Freddy Krueger’s very first murder victim.
Amanda has worked extensively in film and Television with some of her more well-known films being Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), Silverado (1985), and Better Off Dead (1985). Her genre roles include the vampire thriller To Die For (1988), Shakma (1990), Black Magic Woman (1991), To Die For 2 (1991), and The Graves (2009).
Amanda has had over 50 Television appearances in everything from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1981), St. Elsewhere (1985), Cagney & Lacey (1986), Quantum Leap (1991), Dexter (2006), CSI (2011), and many more.

Abraham Lincoln was a hell of a president, and this year he's being treated as such. In 2012 alone he's had two movies dedicated to his life. The first, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," was a mostly fictional account (I think) about the president's tireless campaign against undead bloodsuckers. The second, Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" (opening wide this week), takes a more factual approach to his life, focusing on the last four months of his presidency and his attempts to get the thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution ratified. As far as defining moments in the American character go, few are as important as this. But is this biographical tale, anchored by a lead performance by Daniel Day-Lewis in the title role, a thrilling dip into the past or a really long History Channel special? Let's find out. Pro: Daniel Day-Lewis Yes, his Lincoln voice is sort of weird, but considering the amount...

Should Lincoln fail to manifest as a late era triumph for Steven Spielberg, it will not be for lack of preparation. A new book due to be published later this month in the UK, Spielberg: A Retrospective, reveals the film-maker has been planning this forthcoming biopic almost since childhood, when he was taken to Washington DC by an uncle to view the imposing Lincoln Memorial. A longstanding fascination with Abraham Lincoln developed, culminating in a promise made to the historical writer Doris Kearns Goodwin that Spielberg would option her book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln before it was even written. Jackie Earl Haley has signed onto the cast list of the forthcoming Robocop reboot. Haley, who starred as the knife-gloved serial killer Freddy in the recent Nightmare On Elm Street reboot, is tipped to be playing a charcter called Maddox, who trains Robocop in the art of fighting. It would seem it's not all about impenetrable steel and slow-motion walking for this robotic law enforcer.

Watchmen star Jackie Earl Haley is the latest actor to join the cast of José Padilha's Robocop reboot. He will play the character Maddox, "the guy who dispenses the military training to Robocop." The movie also stars Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as the title character, Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises) as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) as media mogul Pat Novak. Hugh Laurie and Abbie Cornish are also set star in the movie, and Jay Baruchel is in talks to join as well.
Here's the synopsis:
RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit.

Some successful and acclaimed filmmakers use their clout to take deep sea submersibles where no one has gone before, for the enlightenment of all mankind. Others like to revive moribund horror franchises. Nicolas Winding Refn belongs to that latter camp, and is apparently planning on being instrumental in reviving the Maniac Cop.The gleefully scuzzy Maniac Cop series, should it have passed you by, belongs to the Larry Cohen school of genre exploitation, and is about an undead police officer on a killing spree (three of them, ultimately). The 1988 original stars two famous chins in Bruce Campbell and Robert Z'Dar. Z'dar continued on his maniacal path through both sequels; Robert Davi did the investigating in the second and third instalments; and part three (Badge Of Silence) has Jackie Earl Haley in it. All three were produced by Cohen and directed by William Lustig (with help on the third from Joel Soisson...

The trailer for Tim Burton's big-screen version of Dark Shadows has hit the web, and it's raising some hackles among true believers (like myself). What we all hoped would be an atmospheric chiller looks to be a madcap comedy, and not a funny one.
As a long-time fan of the original Dark Shadows, I've been following this project pretty closely. When Johnny Depp persuaded Burton to come aboard as director, I was excited. Burton was a monster kid and dedicated Dark Shadows fan with the chops and temperament to do justice to one of my childhood favorites.
When Burton filled his cast with names such as Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jackie Earl Haley, Chloë Moretz and Christopher Lee, I was even more excited. These are great actors who consistently do good work.

After debuting a cast photo from Dark Shadows last week, it is clear Movie Fanatic readers cannot get enough of the Tim Burton directed, Johnny Depp starring big screen take on the 1960s TV smash. Empire Magazine has debuted two new photos from the set and we could not wait to bring them to our readers.
The first photo (above) from the Dark Shadows set shows Burton working with star Michelle Pfeiffer and Jonny Lee Miller during a crucial scene in the film. The second photo (below) is of Burton and his dear friend and go-to actor Depp making sure a bloody scene is just right.
Dark Shadows arrives on screens May 11, 2012 and also features the talents of Eva Green, Jackie Earl Haley and of course Burton's life love, Helena Bonham Carter.

The first official photo from Tim Burton’s highly anticipated vampire saga Dark Shadows has been released via Entertainment Weekly.
The film stars Johnny Depp as vampire Barnabas Collins, alongside Jonny Lee Miller, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, and Jackie Earl Haley.
Helena Bonham Carter plays prim and proper psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman, who has taken up residence with the Collins family to care for their troubled youngest boy,
David Collins played by Gulliver McGrath. Lonely, confused, and neglected by his pompous father (Jonny Lee Miller, over on the right next to Pfeiffer), David has no one to confide in except his bizarre psychiatrist — and the dead people he claims to see. Grahame-Smith describes him as “a sweet, curious, precocious little boy whose family has branded him as slightly crazy.”

Some actors are just creepy. Check that — some actors are brilliant at playing creepy. Take Peter Sarsgaard, who plays the big-brained villain in Green Lantern. He’s built an impressive resume of delicious villains and shady characters in films like Boys Don’t Cry, Flightplan, An Education, and Knight and Day. Even when he’s playing good, like in Garden State, there’s still an element of danger lurking just beneath the surface.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, though, Sarsgaard argued that his being typecast as a villain is as much a reflection of his “rank” in the business...

This has not been a good week for comics on TV.
On Tuesday, Fox announced that it was canceling Human Target (starring Mark Valley, Chi McBride, and Jackie Earl Haley and based on the DC Comics character created by Len Wein, Carmine Infantino, and Dick Giordano) after two seasons, and also declined to pick up Locke & Key, the pilot from Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (the minds behind Fringe and the Star Trek reboot) based on the Idw comic from Joe Hill.
Now word has come from Deadline Hollywood that NBC will not be picking up Wonder Woman, the series that would have been produced by David E. Kelley and starred Adrianne Palacki as the amazing Amazon.
Between these developments, and Smallville ending its decade long run tonight, we are suddenly going from a lot of comics adaptations in broadcast prime time to none at all for the first time...

Chloë Moretz, by far one of my favourite child actresses of all time, has been in talks to join Tim Burton’s upcoming remake of the 1960s TV soap opera, Dark Shadows.
Moretz’s dramatic rise to fame came, of course, with last year’s Kick-Ass, in which she superbly played Hit Girl / Mindy Macready, daughter of Nicolas Cage’s Big Daddy / Damon Macready. Her role in the remake of the Swedish horror film Let The Right One In (retitled Let Me In for the American film) demonstrated a different side to her than was evident in Kick-Ass. For me, her roles in both truly prove her fame and recognition to be well deserved.
The film will be a gothic horror, focusing on the life of Barnabas Collins, a 200-year-old vampire, and his run-ins with various monsters, witches, werewolves, and ghosts. Moretz will play the daughter of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard...

Whether you loved or hated last year's Nightmare on Elm Street remake, there's no denying that star Jackie Earl Haley gave Freddy Krueger his best shot. So, in light of Platinum Dunes producer Brad Form recently tweeting that no Elm Street sequel is on the horizon, you might be a little concerned that Haley won't explore our favorite genre again any time soon. Well, hope is on the horizon. The Oscar nominee (and all around really nice guy) may soon be joining another classic supernatural remake project -- Tim Burton's Dark Shadows. More after the jump. Now I'm a huge fan of the Watchmen comics, and the movie adaption was pretty damn awesome if you ask me. Zack Snyder literally blew my mind, he did what he did with Frank Miller's 300 -- he turned something already pretty bad-ass into a bad mutha-f*$%er. And if you payed close enough attention you will have written down another thing on your list of nerd-must-haves: Rorschach's shifting mask.
Now you can cross that bad boy of your list next to Holograms, 'cus some inspired little genius by the name of youtube user guinness0507, who happens to own a paint company called Paint With Pearl, figured out how to put together his own moving Rorschach mask! And viola, success! Check out the awesome vid below! It's not quite as good as the CG mask used by Jackie Earl Haley but still its better than the lame painted on ones fanboys wear at halloween.

Actress/writer Kelsey Zukowski shared her Best and Worst Films of 2010 with GeekTyrant. Check out her picks andwhat she had to say.
Best:
Frozen- Frozen is the film that really stayed with me the most throughout 2010. It has such an uncomfortable stillness without really showing anything remotely graphic. There is hardly any gore and the little that there is by wolves who aren’t really all that villainess; they are simply a part of nature. Having nature as the villain is one of the most interesting components of the film. Nature is the element responsible for essentially putting these kids through lingering, brutal torture. Watching our protagonists freeze was more uncomfortable and painful to watch then the most graphic torture or murder scenes. With nature as the antagonist there is also an overwhelming feeling of inevitability as they are stranded. Really their only options of how they die; falling to their deaths,...

Continuing with our 2010 year end celebration actor Jesse Kozel had given us his awesome best and worst list of 2010. Thanks Jesse!
Thanks for the opportunity to spill the beans on what I think is riding the line between good and bad in my world.
I only wanted to include films that played to wide audiences either at festivals with large crowds, theatrical releases or if they were available on DVD.
Best of 2010:
Black Swan - Aronofsky does it again with this mind bending thriller set in the world of Ballet. Stellar performances and an overall captivating setting make for the best film I've seen this year.

This year’s breakout star was, without a doubt, Chloe Moretz; thanks to her epic turn as pint sized killer Hit Girl in “Kick Ass,” she immediately jumped to the top of any film fan’s list of badass comic book vigilantes, behind only Jackie Earl Haley’s Rorschach from “Watchmen.” In fact, about the only way she could have been cooler is if Hit Girl had actually been Rorschach’s protege. Now that would have just about created a black hole of awesome, right?

Remakes are always tricky efforts, and ones that, for good or ill, add a new level of expectations to the difficulties of film releases. Even apart from the obvious comparisons, there will be those who are opposed to a remake on principle, depending on the film. There may be low-budget, horror icon purists out there, but I don’t recall a lot of theoretical negative talk when A Nightmare on Elm Street began its marketing run, and there is probably good reason for that. If you’re going to give something (okay, everything) a new spin, the mid-80′s horror gem seems like a fairly worthy idea.
The High School butchery begins about as well as can be expected, unless you’re expecting something that tries to build purpose into producing a story you know everything about. We meet some teens, they meet Freddy, and after they start dropping like flies,...

An inoperable brain tumor leaves an elderly private detective with time-bending hallucinations and nothing to lose. In taking one last mission—to find a drug boss’ missing daughter—Frank Armstrong may redeem himself for failing to stop his wife’s murder years ago, if his senses don’t betray him before time runs out.
It comes as no surprise that Hollywood players might see box office potential in the aforementioned plot, and in fact, Variety reports that one Tinseltown team you’ve never heard of is looking to launch itself on this distinctive detective story.
Formed by veteran exhibitor Daniel Crown and indie producer Daniela Taplin Lundberg, the newly assembled Red Crown Productions has secured Sam Bayer ("Nightmare on Elm Street") to direct an adaptation of “Tumor”, an Archaia Entertainment graphic novel by Joshua Hale Fialkov and Noel Tuazon.
