Is Joseph Losey’s elusive, maudit masterpiece really a masterpiece? Stanley Baker’s foolish lout of a writer ruins his life pursuing the wanton Jeanne Moreau, and it’s hard to tell if she’s punishing him or he’s punishing himself. Losey’s directing skills are in top form on location in Venice and Rome for this absorbing art film. Pi’s overdue and very welcome disc sorts out the multiple release versions for the first time, and in so doing finally makes the show critically accessible. Co-starring (swoon) Virna Lisi and James Villiers.

10 days ago, 12 survivalists were brought to the Colombian badlands in what can only be described as the world’s toughest survival challenge: No Food, No Water, and no Clothes. They’ve been divided into four groups in the area’s four distinct topographies and already, one of the survivalists has been unable to continue in the harsh and unforgiving environment and tapped out. Guess these folks' pants weren't sufficiently scared off the first time ...
People can exclusively announce that Discovery Channel is premiering a Naked and Afraid spin-off called Naked and Afraid Xl on July 12. According to a release from the network, the show "is both a survival and societal challenge. How will these survivalists respond to each other? Will they band together as one large group or will they break apart into smaller groups to survive?"
As implied by its title, the competition is supersized, with 12 survivalists (six men and six women) enduring 40 days in the wild without the comfort or convenience of food,...

François Truffaut was a big fan of Luis Buñuel films; he had always admired him as one of the greatest auteurs of cinema and in fact they managed to meet each other many times, starting in 1953. But before talking about their meetings, let’s see what Truffaut has said and written about Buñuel.
In his book The Films in My Life, Truffaut wrote: “Luis Buñuel is, perhaps, somewhere between Renoir and Bergman. One would gather that Buñuel finds mankind imbecilic but life diverting. All this he tells us very mildly, even a bit indirectly, but it's there in the overall impression we get from his films.”1
Truffaut also met Buñuel in 1957 when he and Jacques Rivette were doing a series of interviews. In addition to that interview request letter, Truffaut wrote letters, or at least one, to him dated 1963 and closed it as follow:
“I have heard from Jeanne Moreau...

In July, we'll get a new Spider-Man origin story, while this weekend will bring the Avengers team's. But on Monday night, an audience at the French Consulate in New York got another kind of origin story: how Harvey Weinstein became the Superbully of the Movie Biz.The story came right from the mogul’s mouth after French President Nicolas Sarkozy awarded him the Legion of Honor. And, coincidentally, right as Weinstein was still hyping his company's documentary, Bully. The famously my-way-or-locked-out-of-the-edit-bay Miramax/Weinstein Company mogul told the audience in his acceptance speech (after explaining his lifelong love of French movies) that he learned to crush his underlings with an iron fist from the French movie producer Robert Hakim. When Weinstein was just starting out, he was going to Paris six or seven times a year, and he’d always pay Hakim a visit so he could get yelled at about French cinema.
