Stephen King adaptations typically fall into two camps: the sentimental drama, like “Stand By Me” or “The Shawshank Redemption;” or the bone-chilling horror of something like “The Shining” or “Christine.”
“Mr. Harrigan’s Phone,” produced by Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum, straddles both sectors – it’s the tale of a young boy (“It” alum Jaeden Martell) who befriends an elderly billionaire (Donald Sutherland). After the billionaire dies, he still communicates with the boy through the iPhone he was gifted shortly before his death. Both creepy and compelling, “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone” has something for everybody, especially if you’re a King fan.
TheWrap spoke to Hancock about what it was like adapting King and collaborating with him, what he learned from the process and what scene King loved most (hint: it’s not from the book).
As someone who took classes at U Conn Stamford, it was nice to see it represented in the movie.

I was fortunate enough to be able to sit down with star Jaeden Martell and director John Lee Hancock and pick their brain a bit about Mr. Harrigan’s Phone. I was able to see the film myself (Check out the review here) and I absolutely loved it. As a big fan of coming-of-age films, this was a great watch and made me very excited to talk to these two.
Mr. Harrigan’s Phone synopsis:

The Stephen King adaptation renaissance is showing no signs of slowing down, in large part thanks to Netflix, which has recently brought three of the author's short stories to our screens. Joining the streamer's library alongside Mike Flanagan's "Gerald's Game," Zak Hilditch's "1922," and Vincenzo Natali's "In The Tall Grass," Netflix has finally released a trailer for the upcoming film, "Mr. Harrigan's Phone," another movie based on a chilling story from the famed horror writer. This time around, the supernatural is clashing with one of the scariest concepts of all: growing up. The film comes from writer-director John Lee Hancock and stars Jaeden Martell and Donald Sutherland in the lead roles.
Coming-of-age drama takes center stage in this story about Craig (Martell), a teenage boy befriending a reclusive billionaire (Sutherland as the titular Mr. Harrigan). They form a bond so strong that not even death can split them...

The official trailer for Netflix’s Mr. Harrigan’s Phone warns that some connections never die and that you shouldn’t call out unless you want an answer. The trailer reveals that the bond between a bullied teenager and an elderly gentleman doesn’t end once the old man passes away. As for the warning not to call out…well, the old guy apparently wasn’t the nicest man in town before he died.
The cast is led by Jaeden Martell as Craig and Donald Sutherland (The Undoing) as the titular character. Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Joe Tippett, Colin O’Brien, Cyrus Arnold, Thomas Francis Murphy, and Peggy J. Scott also star.

Netflix has released the first photos from Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, a 2022 film based on a short story by Stephen King. Adapted and directed by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side), Mr. Harrigan’s Phone stars Donald Sutherland as Harrigan and Jaeden Martell as a young man who befriends the elderly Hannigan.
While most, but definitely not all, of Stephen King’s work scares the hell out of readers, Hancock describes this particular story as more of a cautionary fairy tale.
“More than anything, it’s about an odd relationship between a billionaire in his 80s and a [young man] and the bonds of friendship, and how far will you go for a friend?” writer/director Hancock said in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “Do you like Shawshank Redemption, do you like Stand By Me,...

Netflix hasn’t announced exactly when they’re going to release the Stephen King adaptation Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, we just know it’s coming to the streaming service sometime this year. The movie has just taken a big step toward getting sent out into the world, though. It has been screened for the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association and earned its rating. Mr. Harrigan’s Phone has been rated PG-13 for thematic material, some strong language, violent content and brief drug material. The movie has also been screened for King, who took to Twitter to share his opinion that it is “nothing short of brilliant”.

Anne Hathaway stirred up buzz at the start of 2021 by revealing she was the studio’s ninth choice to play Andrea “Andy” Sachs in “The Devil Wears Prada.” Which actress did Fox prefer to star opposite Meryl Streep in the 2006 comedy? Through it all, Hathaway campaigned to get the part.

Justin Timberlake is on a roll! After celebrating his first-ever Oscar nod with Matt Damon at the Academy Awards Nominees Luncheon, the singer continued the fun at The Hollywood Reporter's Nominees Night in Beverly Hills. Every short but important moment he spent on the red carpet was beautiful, like when he stopped to pose for pictures and flashed a sexy smile or when he stared straight into our souls. Unfortunately, his wife, Jessica Biel, did not make an appearance, but Justin was in good company with producers Julie Yorn and Carla Hacken. The Oscars are on Feb. 26, and Justin's song "Can't Stop the Feeling" from the animated movie Trolls is up for best original song. In addition to being excited, he recently revealed that he's "really humbled by the whole thing." We're keeping our fingers crossed that Justin strikes gold! The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.
