Being Canadian is an odd experience for those who have never tried it. It can teach you humility and pride at the same time, and how to deal with disappointment come NHL playoff time. Yet Canadians, compared to Americans, will always be viewed as the “Prince Harry” on the global stage (if you’ll forgive the colonized-metaphor). Canadians are cuter, perhaps slightly more politically correct, but ultimately not seen as important as their big brother.
On occasion, Canadian television will break out and receive the international attention and acclaim it so rightfully deserves, almost American levels of attention. More often than not, it’s a comedic gem that lends itself to a unique slice of Canadiana, shining a light on the embarrassing underbelly of the country that tries so hard to remain hidden. The town of Karmack, somewhere in the US Midwest, rivals Hot Fuzz’s Sandford as an accident blackspot. Here, however, it’s not so much a consequence of murder as of a desperately depressed economic state which has left some people suicidal, others careless, and has allowed vital infrastructure to corrode. Nobody now seems to have the will to do anything about this, but what they are willing to invest in is a middle man – somebody who will stand in for the sheriff (Paul Gross), doctor (Don McKellar) and pastor (Nicolas Bro) when it comes to the breaking of bad news.
Taking on this thankless job is the personable but naïve Frank (Pål Sverre Hagen), a mild mannered man who actually seems to believe, at the outset, that he can do some good. The bulk of the film unfolds as a series of vignettes in which he is confronted with one absurdly.

Gordon Pinsent, the adored Canadian actor whose career hit its peak well into his 70s with an award-winning performance as the heartbroken husband in “Away From Her”, has died.
Pinset died on Saturday evening at age 92, his friend actor Mark Critch confirmed.
The Newfoundland native, a household name in Canada for decades after his many appearances on stage and screen, became known internationally after his Genie Award-winning turn as Grant in Sarah Polley’s acclaimed directorial debut.
His dignified portrayal so impressed Daniel Day-Lewis, who went on to win the best actor Oscar in 2008 for “There Will Be Blood,” that he sent an email to Polley praising Pinsent’s performance as one of the most “astonishing” he’d ever seen.

"Death is a hard way to make a living." LevelFilm has revealed an official trailer for the indie dark comedy The Middle Man, the latest film made by an award-winning Norwegian filmmaker named Bent Hamer - one of his biggest hits was the indie Factotum from 2005 with Matt Dillon. This new one already premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, but it hasn't made its way down to the US yet despite taking place in the US. The film is set in Karmack, a small town in the American Midwest that is so economically depressed that it hires Frank Farrelli as a middle man to deliver bad news to people because none of the residents can bear to do it themselves anymore. Norwegian actor Pål Sverre Hagen stars as Frank, with a cast including Don McKellar, Kenneth Welsh, Paul Gross, Trond Fausa, Aksel Hennie, and Bill Lake. This looks like a very strange,...

It's slightly surreal to watch a show about a global catastrophe during, well, a global catastrophe.
But Y: The Last Man Season 1 Episode 1 begins with such promise that it's impossible not to be hooked.
It's the show you didn't know you needed - a post-apocalyptic drama populated almost exclusively with strong, competent, complex women.
Y: The Last Man is based on a series of comic books by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. Sixty issues were published, concluding in 2008.
(Full disclosure -- I have not read the comics. I am unspoiled and intend to judge the show based on its merits, not how true it stays to the source material).
Development on the television series began in 2015, and it finally began filming in late 2020. It seems prescient that it was filmed during the pandemic, for this is truly a show of its time.

Timothy Hutton is no longer a part of the cast on FX’s long-gestating “Y: The Last Man,” the network confirmed on Wednesday.
Hutton’s exit comes as several cast members have been swapped now that the show is entering production. Olivia Thirlby has replaced Imogen Poots as Hero Brown, while Ashley Romans takes over the role of Agent 355 from Lashana Lynch.
Originally announced as a regular cast member, Hutton had been hired to play the President of the United States. Now, Paul Gross (“Due South”) has taken over the role, but it’s no longer as a series regular. (UPDATED: Variety has since learned that Hutton was only hired to star in the pilot, and that his character wasn’t expected to continue after that. In the “Y: The Last Man” graphic novel, the President dies early on.)
But Hutton’s departure also comes following a report, posted online in March by BuzzFeed News, that revealed a criminal complaint against the actor that had been filed with the Vancouver Police Department. In the report, Sera Johnston told the site that she was raped and assaulted by both Hutton...

"We don't know what really went on..." Sony Pictures has unveiled the official trailer for an indie drama titled The Parting Glass, the feature directorial debut of English actor Stephen Moyer. This premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival, and also played at the Karlovy Vary and Mill Valley Film Festivals last year. The film is about a family dealing with a death, as they travel across the country to collect her belongings and piece together their memories of the woman they lost. Inspired by autobiographical events, indie actor Denis O'Hare makes his feature screenplay debut with this poignant, heartfelt story. The Parting Glass stars Oluniké Adeliyi, Edward Asner, Paul Gross, Rhys Ifans, Melissa Leo, Cynthia Nixon, Anna Paquin, and Denis O'Hare. This does look like a lovely drama about family, very emotional and honest. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Stephen Moyer's The Parting Glass, direct from YouTube:...

A few holdouts aside, the gay TV show has mostly gone the way of the gay bar. Acceptance and equality come at a cost — when you’re finally allowed in the club, there’s no more need to make your own. Like the tragic closing of storied San Francisco gay bars Gangway or The Lex, gone are the days of solely gay shows like “Queer As Folk” or “The L Word” (pending reboots). Television no longer has to cater solely to gay audiences in order to tell nuanced gay stories.
Enter the next chapter of “Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City,” which picks up 20 years after its last installment and doesn’t miss a beat. Though the mini-series was highly controversial when it first aired on PBS, Netflix’s continuation feels like a warm embrace from an old friend; an unconventional marriage between rose-colored nostalgia and progressive identity politics.

When Armistead Maupin began writing Tales of the City — his serialized, sudsy stories about life in San Francisco in the late Seventies — the central character was a very naive, very straight Midwestern girl, Mary Ann Singleton. Mary Ann served as a point-of-entry figure for readers unversed in queer fiction, just as Laura Linney’s portrayal of Mary Ann did the same in 1993’s acclaimed PBS adaptation of the first Tales book. (Two additional miniseries were produced for Showtime over the next decade, with diminishing returns.)

Few fictional worlds have so meaningfully impacted the lives of Lgbtq Americans as Armistead Maupin’s “Tales of the City.” First serialized as a column in the San Francisco Chronicle, then produced as a groundbreaking 1993 PBS series, Maupin’s saga of a tight-knit Lgbtq community quartered at 28 Barbary Lane, home to Mary Ann Singleton and Anna Madrigal, was an early and beloved bellwether for contemporary queer life.
The television series returns this month in a 10-part Netflix reboot, and at Monday night’s New York City premiere, the series’ cast and creatives marked “Tales” as a triumph not just for the cherished characters of Barbary Lane, but for the Lgbtq writers and artists who conceived the sequel.
“To have an all-queer writers’ room, a group where nobody had to explain things, where the things that have all been in our heads, the experiences that we’ve all had growing up...

Mary Ann Singleton is back at Barbary Lane, and the reunion is primed to inspire as many feelings as possible. Netflix is reviving the beloved queer show “Tales of the City,” based on the books by prolific San Francisco writer Armistead Maupin. The last time time she was seen onscreen was 1993, when Laura Linney played her for PBS. Linney returns — with her co-star from that production, Olympia Dukakis, as magical landlord Anna Madrigal — to the mythical house on Barbary Lane in which so many memories were made. The first trailer for the new series, below, is scored by Anohni’s gorgeous queer ode “For Today I am a Boy,” dialing up the tear factor to 100.
Per the Netflix synopsis, this next chapter of “Tales of the City” follows Mary Ann’s (Linney) return to “present-day San Francisco, where she is reunited with her daughter Shawna (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian...

For the first time in its six-decade existence, the 2019 San Francisco International Film Festival will kick off its opening night with an episodic series. However, the pick is very much on brand: It will screen the first full episode of Netflix’s much-anticipated new original series, “Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City.”
“Like nothing before it, Armistead Maupin’s series of ‘Tales of the City’ books defined the values and unique worldview of San Francisco and the Bay Area,” said Sffilm executive director Noah Cowan in a statement. “We are thrilled that this new take on his original vision, the remarkable result of a collaboration between Lauren Morelli and Alan Poul, that incredible cast, and our friends at Netflix, can be introduced to the world for the first time in the place that originally gave it life. It’s going to be one hell of a ‘coming home’ party!

Unlike the Oscars, Emmy voters do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Last year that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.
