Jimmy Kimmel did a fantastic job with the 2024 Oscars opening monologue, touching briefly on politics but mostly focusing the jokes around this year’s nominees. Kimmel called out Greta Gerwig’s Oscar snub, this year’s Oppenheimer nomination being a new “high” in Robert Downey Jr’s career, and compared Emma Stone playing an adult woman with the brain of a child to the woman who gave the rebuttal to the State of the Union address. Kimmel’s monologue ended with a standing ovation as he brought Teamsters & IATSE members onto the stage, thanking them for standing with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA during last year’s strikes.

All eyes are on what Christopher Nolan is going to do next…beyond probably winning his first Oscar.
The world is Nolan’s oyster after his 12th feature-length film “Oppenheimer” was nominated for 13 Academy Awards. “Oppenheimer” is the frontrunner for Best Picture and Nolan is for Best Director.
You know what might make a great movie for lucky 13? A horror flick. Nolan is open to the idea. Asked at a British Film Institute panel discussion in London on February 15 if he would ever consider making a horror movie, Nolan said he loves playing with genre and would do so if he stumbled across a “really exceptional idea.”
“‘Oppenheimer‘ has elements of horror in it definitely, as I think is appropriate to the subject matter,” Nolan said (via Variety). “I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices. It really is about a visceral response to things,...

Christopher Nolan’s screenplay for “Oppenheimer” is dense, 180 pages, and a terrific read. Adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “American Prometheus,” the filmmaker found a conflicted hero in brilliant theoretical physicist Robert Oppenheimer, a Salieri antagonist in political operative Admiral Lewis Strauss, and a courtroom drama for each of them.
Nolan and I spoke over the phone about the writing of “Oppenheimer,” which is nominated for Adapted Screenplay. It’s one of the film’s 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt as his wife Kitty, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey, Jr. as Strauss.
The following interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

The Twisters trailer doesn’t kick off slowly and build to a big tornado reveal. No, it cuts straight to the action, with a devastating tornado filling the trailer’s opening seconds.
Top Gun: Maverick‘s Glen Powell stars as a tornado wrangler whose catchphrase is, “If you feel it, chase it.” The film also stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing), Anthony Ramos (In the Heights), Brandon Perea (Nope), Sasha Lane (American Honey), Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders), Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Nik Dodani (Atypical), and Maura Tierney (Beautiful Boy).

It’s already been a busy 2024 for Netflix. Out is long time film chief Scott Stuber; in are live sports (sort of), a huge Sundance splash, and 18 Oscar nominations, the most of any individual studio. What does the next 11 months have in store? Answer: a hell of a lot.
Netflix on February 1 released a teaser video for its biggest properties arriving in 2024, including more than 50 new movies and 90 new and returning series. The highlight is “Squid Game 2,” the follow-up season to the South Korean dystopian smash hit that became Netflix’s biggest show of all time.
At the end of Netflix’s mega-tease, we see Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and his new bright-red hair walking through an airport when a mysterious voice on his phone tells him, “You’re going to regret the choice you made.”
“I’m going to find you, no matter what it takes,” he says in return.

“Killers of the Flower Moon,” directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese, serves as a cinematic beacon, illuminating the dark and often neglected chapter of American history involving the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. The film, based on David Grann‘s nonfiction bestseller, not only unravels a chilling tale of greed and racial injustice but also brings to light the contemporary challenges of preserving historical truth.

So we watched Oppenheimer on IMAX Laser. After writing a vast amount of articles dealing with the cinematography aspects of the film, we didn’t imagine how great the sound is. Indeed, the sound is brilliant and layered by the outstanding score composed by Ludwig Göransson. That was combined extremely well with the IMAX closeups.

Domestic box office could be down a third from July. If so, that’s really good news.
Fueled by “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) and “Oppenheimer” (Universal), July’s total of about $1.36 billion came just short for our absolute best-case scenario of $1.4 billion. That beats last July by about 230 million for the biggest signal to date that theaters are more than viable: Not only can they throw off impressive grosses, but they’re still capable of driving the cultural conversation.
Still, what a strange July. Our preview suggested that the possibility that the gross could be this high — however, no one could have predicted that “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” (Paramount) wouldn’t be in the top three.

For costume designer Ellen Mirojnick, “Oppenheimer” isn’t a biopic of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Nor is it a period piece about the Manhattan Project and the unsteady aftermath of an American political class grappling with who gets to be responsible for the power to destroy the world. The Christopher Nolan film is a portrait — and one she found to be remarkably consistent over the course of the scientist’s life.
The very structure of the film implies that Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) was always the man haunted by the building blocks of our universe, always the man who would reach out and try to touch the fire burning at the center of creation. Mirojnick, accordingly, reflected that consistency in how she chose to dress Oppenheimer throughout the film.
“Oppenheimer never changed his silhouette from the time he began at Berkeley through the decades. That was a very, very important note to zero in on,...

As she told Collider, “And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, Ok?!”
This is a woman who knows the future. Based on estimates for Tuesday’s grosses, Gerwig’s film added $26 million to its domestic take this week. The second weekend will be vital to narrow the guess, but the domestic range could be anywhere from $500 million-$800 million. With over $400 million in worldwide in less than a week, a $1 billion total theatrical take seems increasingly likely.
“Oppenheimer” should achieve about half of that. It grossed a little over $12.0 million on Monday and Tuesday. A range for the domestic estimate is $250 million-$400 million.

It appears that Oppenheimer was shot on specially modified fast Panavision Sphero and System 65 lenses. Even more interestingly, a dedicated snorkel lens was made for the IMAX cameras, to capture extreme macro shots of some ultra-intriguing scientific stuff.

Now everybody knows that Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was shot with unconventional methods by Director of Photography Hoyte van Hoytema. The IMAX film cameras were used to capture objects with minimal (to zero – as stated by Nolan) CGI and VFX layers. Indeed, as mentioned by Hoytema before the release of the movie, there was a particular emphasis on capturing actors’ faces, amplified by IMAX Mkiv, and IMAX Msm 9802 cameras, bringing this mighty 18K resolution of enhanced motions and dramaturgy.

Cillian Murphy is J. Robert Oppenheimer in ‘Oppenheimer’ (Photo Credit by Melinda Sue Gordon © Universal Pictures)
Five-time Oscar nominee Christopher Nolan’s latest film, Oppenheimer, focuses on the race to create the ultimate weapon to end World War II and bring the soldiers home. The movie delves into the life of Robert Oppenheimer, who is widely regarded as “The Father of the Atomic Bomb.”
The film begins with Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, depicted as a brilliant but socially awkward man who attends prestigious colleges in Europe and is light years ahead of all his professors. Robert attends a communist party meeting where he meets Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh), a known communist. The two begin a tumultuous relationship marked by both passion and conflict.
It’s while Oppenheimer’s running the quantum physics department at the University of California, Berkeley, that the military starts eyeing him for a special project.

Editor Jennifer Lame put together this five-minute video from Oppenheimer, written and directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Cillian Murphy. The video features new scenes from the R-rated thriller, which is going head-to-head in theaters against Barbie in a matchup referred to as “Barbenheimer.” Who will win? Moviegoers who love being emersed in big productions on the largest screeners possible.
Cillian Murphy reunites with director Nolan to star as J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb. Murphy previously worked with Nolan on 2005’s Batman Begins as Dr. Jonathan Crane / Scarecrow and put in a cameo in 2008’s The Dark Knight. In 2010’s Inception, Murphy played Robert Fischer, heir to the energy conglomerate Fischer Morrow. And in 2017’s Dunkirk, Murphy played a Royal Navy soldier. Oppenheimer marks his first starring role in a Nolan film.

It’s no secret that Christopher Nolan made “ Oppenheimer ” to be seen on the big screen. But not all big screens are created equal.
That’s part of the reason why Universal Pictures has made “Oppenheimer” tickets available early for over a thousand “premium large format” (or Plf) screens, with options including IMAX 70mm, 70mm, IMAX digital, 35mm, Dolby Cinema and more.
Knowing that even those words can get overwhelming and technical, Nolan went a step further: In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, he offered a guide to his favorite formats, explaining why it matters and even where he likes to sit so that audiences don’t feel like they need a film school degree (or one in theoretical physics) before settling on a theater.
“You rarely get the chance to really talk to moviegoers directly about why you love a particular format and why if they can...

An educational gem was discovered in the World Wide Web. We found The 15/70 Filmmaker’s Manual written in 1999. However, many of its topics are super relevant today and essential for those who are keen to shoot with IMAX cameras. Read this before diving into the 15/70 ultra-complicated adventure.

The manual was published for those who dare to shoot the mighty 15/70 format. As stated back in 1999 by IMAX: “Each year, IMAX Corp. receives numerous inquiries from producers and directors who are experienced in 35mm or video production, and who are now interested in producing a 15/70 project. They’re usually attracted by the extraordinary image quality that IMAX technology affords and perhaps have a project in mind they believe would both succeed artistically and appeal to the 15/70 exhibition network”. Please note that this statement was written in 1999. From then, filmmakers have much...

Universal Pictures has released two new BTS pictures of the anticipated Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan and shot by Hoyte Van Hoytema. Oppenheimer Movie Poster Oppenheimer is almost ready
According to resources, Nolan’s Oppenheimer is almost ready. Post-production editing on was wrapped last week, ready to get refined in the VFX pipeline, which, in the case of Nolan, is a portion of the movie (we’ll talk about that later on). Furthermore, there’s a chance that the trailer will be released before the screening of Avatar 2. Personally, I doubt that, since the Mission Impossible new trailer is supposed to be released in that time frame. However, there’s a possibility that Oppenheimer’s trailer will be released...

Netflix has debuted a number of first-look images from Ryan Murphy’s film adaptation of ‘The Prom’ starring Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman.
Dee Dee Allen (Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (James Corden) are New York City stage stars with a crisis on their hands: their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flatlined their careers.
Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), the head of the PTA (Kerry Washington) has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose).

Hopes for jump-starting the blockbuster movie season delayed by a summer shut-down largely rest on Tenet, Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi spy thriller. The description of the film certainly sounds like it would do the trick – a promised a mix of Inception’s intellectually intriguing concept and The Dark Knight’s technically dazzling action thrills. While we do get the technical dazzle and an intriguing concept, Tenet is more a mixed bag overall, and far from one of Nolan’s best.

But this comedy has something extra to offer: four legendary stars with long and storied careers. Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburgen and Candice Bergen have garnered enough awards and nominations, including Oscars, and have demonstrated enough star staying-power on the big screen and the small one to qualify as bonafide Hollywood legends. Back in 1982, Randy Newman picked up his first two Oscar nominations, for an original song and score for the movie Ragtime. Twenty years – and over a dozen more noms – later, Newman eventually brought home an Academy Award, for the Monsters, Inc. tune "If I Didn't Have You." The statuette, you could argue, was way, way overdue. (How did he not win for The Natural score? Or for "You've Got a Friend in Me," for Zurg's sake?)

In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men’s-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the Battle Of The Sexes and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world. As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles.
The fiercely private King was not only championing for equality, but also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, as her friendship with Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough) developed. And Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, wrestled with his gambling demons, at the expense of his family and wife Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue). Chicago – It was Monday, Nov. 3, 2014 at 10:15 p.m. Leaving Navy Pier IMAX, I was driving north on Lake Shore Drive – a constantly busy, multi-lane highway that hugs the east of Chicago and separates it from water.
What I saw next with fellow staff critic Patrick McDonald might have been normal for 3 a.m., but discussing Christopher Nolan’s new sci-fi “Interstellar” and being the only one on the road in either direction felt otherworldly.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
While certainly unusual, it speaks to my state of mind and how the film hit me with a ton of bricks. It felt epic and simultaneously intimate – being one of only a few dozen critics comfortably spread out among 440 seats – and could have only been experienced correctly on a 6-story, 60-by-80-foot screen. Don’t make the mistake of seeing this film in anything but IMAX.

It felt epic and simultaneously intimate – being one of only a few dozen critics comfortably spread out among 440 seats – and could have only been experienced correctly on a 6-story, 60-by-80-foot screen. Don’t make the mistake of seeing this film in anything but IMAX.
The problem with being Christopher Nolan is having...

Aaron Paul is used to sitting shotgun in star driven vehicles. Outside of Breaking Bad, Paul played supporting roles in 2009’s remake of Last House On The Left and 2012’s indie drama Smashed. However, he’s never had the opportunity to lead a project of his own. Need For Speed finally gives the actor the opportunity to take the reigns. Although he is certainly part of the problem, there are actually plenty of issues holding this film back. Speed isn’t the only thing this film needs.
After serving time for a false conviction of vehicular manslaughter involving a close friend, Aaron Paul’s character Tobey Marshall sets out on a race across country to prove his innocence and to bring the real culprit (Dominic Cooper) to justice. Cops and rival racers both have it out for our hero and his team of mechanics that are in tow to help him along the way.

ABC Family is bringing back the scares for the 14th year in a row with their 13 Nights of Halloween. This has become a staple of my October screening, and there are a lot of great inclusions this year. It may seem a bit repetitive, and you may feel like Tim Burton has taken over, but you don’t want to miss out on some of these offerings – especially Coraline – and it’s a fun mix.
Check out the full line-up below, and mark your calendars.

The popular programming event, starting Friday, October 19, and concluding on Wednesday, October 31, features a brand new episode of “Pretty Little Liars” featuring special guest “glampire” Adam Lambert, and the season finale of “Switched at Birth.” The stunt will also...

Chicago – Star studded, special effects ladened “comedies” featuring aliens should have been put to rest after last year’s “Paul.” But “The Watch” is here, and it features Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and an odd Richard Ayoade as four suburban neighborhood watch volunteers who end up hunting space men. Yep, right after “Paul.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
What could have been a more pungent satire on suburbia, consumerism and lives of desperation becomes a Stiller/Vaughn/Hill romp, as they follow their movie personas yet again in a barely stitched together plot. There are moments that are farcical, and it does built a little steam by the end, but It suffers from having felt like it’s been seen before. Like last year’s “Tower Heist” – also anchored by Stiller – these star comedies tend to sputter and run out of gas.
