A few years after first wife died, he married fellow writer/historian Doris Kearns Goodwin. They live in Boston and he keeps an office in Maine.

Graduated first in his class at both Tufts, then Harvard law school in
1958, then clerked for Supreme Court justice Felix Frankfurter. After
varied posts in Congress and then alongside presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, also worked as speechwriter for candidates Eugene McCarthy, Robert F. Kennedy and Edmund Muskie.
