Popular and pre-existing IP has reigned supreme in Hollywood as most studios and streamers look to continue the success of former franchises for an easy win. But that’s not a trend Nicole Dow is aiming to pursue.
As the head of TV for Marsai Martin’s Genius Entertainment, her formula isn’t overly complicated. Dow breaks down their development slate into three specific categories: kids and family, young adult, and new adult.
The latter of which is a less explored territory. The genre first came about within the last 15 year — and only recently gained steam online with authors like Colleen Hoover (“It Ends With Us”) and Casey McQuiston leading the charge. As the name explains, new adult covers the emerging adult generation between the ages of 18-29.

For quite some time now, Christmas has come every day for Ali Afshar.
The actor, producer and former race car driver is founder and president of Esx Entertainment, a prolific indie film and TV production company that’s made its name in recent years pumping Yuletide content to streamers amid the pandemic.
The projects are modestly budgeted and shot efficiently and safely, mostly due to Afshar’s commandeering of his hometown — a sleepy Sonoma County village called Petaluma, where he built a soundstage from a converted barn and mines below-the-line crew from local residents. Titles include Netflix’s “A California Christmas” and its sequel “City Lights,” and the HBO Max originals “A Christmas Mystery,” “A Hollywood Christmas” and “Holiday Harmony.”
Afshar’s well-oiled Christmas machine functions at such a level that, during a recent conversation with Variety, he revealed he was in the middle of shooting another film — “A Wine Country Christmas.

When I think of the sitcoms that raised me, I don’t usually think of “Smart Guy,” and for that I am sorry.
“Smart Guy” often gets lost in the pantheon of sitcom lore, eclipsed by decades of long-running predecessors like “Full House,” “Fresh Prince,” and more. Created by Danny Kallis, the series stars Tahj Mowry as T.J. Henderson, a 10-year-old genius who skips from fourth to tenth grade and has to navigate high school with older kids — including his two siblings. It ran from 1997 to 1999 on the WB and aired reruns on the Disney Channel until 2003.
That’s when I and many other young millennials found the exceptional series. “Smart Guy” became the foundation of my sitcom education in tandem with “Boy Meets World,” a post-school package deal viewing (usually with my dad sharing the couch). In the years that followed, “Boy” moved to ABC Family, but “Smart Guy...

The “Escape Room” sub-genre of horror seems to be picking up a bit of pace the last few years, coinciding with the popularity of real-life escape rooms. Personally, I haven’t been to one in real-life and the handful of movies I have seen based on them have ranged in quality, without any being outstanding. Is there a great movie with this basic story? Well, perhaps it has already been made because two of my favourite horror movies in Saw (2004) and Cube (1997) are basically escape room movies before that became a thing. It’s very hard to show any originality with these types of films but these two classics show you can, does Escape: Puzzle of Fear follow suit?

At the time of his death on Thursday, Cuba Gooding Sr. was perhaps best known by younger generations as the father of Academy Award-winner Cuba Gooding Jr. But long before his son became famous, Gooding Sr. was a celebrity in his own right, having overcome the hardships endured by his refugee parents to become the lead singer of a popular funk band.
Born in New York City in 1944, Gooding Sr. was the son of Dudley MacDonald Gooding and his wife, Addie Alston. The elder Gooding, who spoke seven languages, had fled his native Barbados to escape servitude in 1936. He eventually found his way to Cuba,...

Our continued quest to find a Christmas movie classic in the bargain bins! It's Christmas In Compton!
Family-orientated Christmas films broadly come in two flavours – the heartwarming tale of a selfish or immoral person redeeming themselves just in time for the big day, or straight out slapstick with lots of people falling over on ice and getting hit with snowballs. One Bad Christmas!, or Christmas In Compton as it's known in the Us, attempts to be both of these and more, without coming anywhere close to achieving its ambitions.
The story focuses on Derrick (Omar Gooding, brother to Cuba Jr), a law school dropout living in his father's house but with dreams of becoming a hit record producer. His father, disappointed with his son's never-realised ambitions, pressures him to make something more of his life. Derrick decides to prove once and for all he can be a...

The very-energetic, often-shirtless Cuba Gooding Jr. comes to Comedy Central's Big Time in Hollywood, Fl as a coked-up, even-more-naked version of himself. In an exclusive clip from his first scene, Gooding Jr. whips out a gun on his little brother Omar Gooding before screaming at his agent to get him some work because he's "in a real bad way." Nothing can stand in the way of this man and his coke — not even Steven Spielberg. The episode, "To Catch a Paparazzi" airs April 15.

For some of the oldsters out there they may recall the 1973 Gamble & Huff-produced R&B hit single “I’ll Always Love My Mama” by the musical group The Intruders. This musical anthem was certainly a lyrical tribute to caring mothers and how their sacrifices shaped our childhood and adulthood. This finger-snapping song definitely captured the spirit of motherly guidance.
Naturally film has had its share of depicting motherhood over the decades. In fact, mothers of all types are presented before our eyes in packages of being nurturing, notorious, nutty, naive and nonsensical. However, there is something so special about the mother-son relationship that rivals the father-daughter dynamic. We have our share of proud Mama’s boys out there roaming about in society.

I don't know if I'd call myself an "alpha male." I don't get dirty. Work on technical things. Or like, enjoy getting sweaty. At the same, I'm relatively tough. As in "a tough guy, eh?"
Starring Ross McCall, perhaps best known as Liebgott, the one Jewish soldier on Band of Brothers, the movie (also apparently known as Knuckledraggers) is a comical take on the modern male's difficulties with women, work and life in general. Omar Gooding is in this, too, of Wild and Crazy Kids fame. It was like a combo of You Can't Do That On Television meets Double Dare only with Donnie Jeffcoat to back Gooding up. Don't ever test me when it comes to classic 90's Nickelodeon programming.
