A pair of John Lennon’s sunglasses sold for about $183,000 (£137,500) after being put up for auction by the late musician’s former chauffeur Alan Herring.
The lot was sold at Sotheby’s London and was expected to fetch between just £6,000 to £8,000 (about $8000 to $10,600). Per the Sotheby’s listing, the non-prescription specs were likely made by Oliver Goldsmith and they were given to Lennon in 1966 so he could prepare for his turn in Richard Lester’s film, How I Won the War.

'Saint Joan': Constance Cummings as the George Bernard Shaw heroine. Constance Cummings on stage: From sex-change farce and Emma Bovary to Juliet and 'Saint Joan' (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Frank Capra, Mae West and Columbia Lawsuit.”) In the mid-1930s, Constance Cummings landed the title roles in two of husband Benn W. Levy's stage adaptations: Levy and Hubert Griffith's Young Madame Conti (1936), starring Cummings as a demimondaine who falls in love with a villainous character. She ends up killing him – or does she? Adapted from Bruno Frank's German-language original, Young Madame Conti was presented on both sides of the Atlantic; on Broadway, it had a brief run in spring 1937 at the Music Box Theatre. Based on the Gustave Flaubert novel, the Theatre Guild-produced Madame Bovary (1937) was staged in late fall at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre. Referring to the London production of Young Madame Conti, The...

Kate Beckinsale is gorgeous, uber chic and the epitome of class. While most would opt for sweats and sneaks when travelling, Beckinsale certainly does not. The 41-year-old looked impeccable as she arrived at Lax earlier this week. Kate wore a timeless white Helmut Lang Blazer for $620 with amazing grey slouchy yet tailored pants by MaxMara for $475. Sticking with the grey trend (which is huge this fall), Beckinsale chose a billowy grey scarf, a grey Dolce and Gabbana bag for $2,395 and Oliver Goldsmith sunnies for $405. Topping off the look, Kate gave this outfit a lift with her $450 pink Kurt Geiger d'orsay pumps, adding just the right amount of pop. Now my favorite part; let's recreate this on the cheap!...

Coronation Street actor Simon Gregson has revealed that he is planning to support his former co-star Katherine Kelly's new stage project - even though he hates the theatre. Kelly filmed her final scenes as Gregson's on-screen ex-wife Becky McDonald last month and is now appearing in a new production of classic Oliver Goldsmith play She Stoops to Conquer at the National Theatre in London. Gregson, who plays unlucky-in-love Steve, told Pa that he will pay a reluctant visit to see the show. "I guess I'll see it. I'm not a big fan of the theatre. One of the Corrie directors called me an anti-thespian and I think he's probably right," Gregson explained. "I'll go down and support (more)...

13 Michael Morpurgo's much-loved children's novel War Horse, a long-running favourite at the National and on Broadway, gets the Hollywood treatment. A tearjerking saga about a young soldier and his horse – it was only a matter of time before it was Spielberged.
16 Ts Eliot prize. Despite withdrawals from the shortlist over objections to a hedge fund's sponsorship of the prize, the Eliot remains the UK's premier poetry award, and its eve-of-event reading is always a treat. This year's shortlist includes Daljit Nagra, Carol Ann Duffy and John Burnside.

Leading light of the British stage once seen as Gielgud's successor
John Neville, who has died aged 86, was a leading light of the Old Vic, the charismatic artistic director of the Nottingham Playhouse in the early 1960s and, after emigrating to Canada in 1972, a renowned leader of that country's theatre, notably at Stratford, Ontario. Tall, handsome and authoritative on the stage, and best known today, perhaps, for his sinister role as the Well-Manicured Man in The X-Files on television – was he on the side of good or evil? – he was often thought of as the natural successor to John Gielgud.
He found huge matinee-idol success early on, in the Gielgud roles of Hamlet and Richard II, though his patrician veneer and noble bearing could be easily discarded, as he showed to devastating effect in 1963, when he played Bill Naughton's Alfie at the Mermaid theatre, the role that became Michael Caine...

Katherine Kelly has revealed that her upcoming theatre role is the "opposite" of playing Becky McDonald in Coronation Street. The actress will leave the soap in December after playing the barmaid for five years. She will appear in a new production of Oliver Goldsmith's play She Stoops To Conquer at London's National Theatre from January. "I'm so excited and I'm really looking forward to it all but I'm trying not to think too much about that so I can concentrate on giving Becky the send-off she deserves," she told the Press Association. "I finish Coronation Street on the Friday and start rehearsals for that on Monday and it's the complete opposite, it couldn't be a more opposite role to Becky. "It's in the 1700s set in the west country, the (more)...

Caprica 1x14, "Blowback," finally had its international premiere yesterday, for lack of a better word. The episode was written by Kevin Murphy and directed by Omar Madha, and it's definitely one of the best episodes so far. If you have seen it, wherever you may have seen it, you can rate it below.
Space posted the Innerspace podcast on their website the other day and it's definitely something worth checking out, especially if you're also a fan of Stargate Universe. You can find it at Spacecast.com. Among other things, they explain why Caprica isn't available for viewing on their site and voice their surprise at Syfy's decision to pull the show off the air and alienate their BSG fan base the way they did.
They have also apologized to the Canadian viewers who missed last week's episode because their DVRs hadn't registered the last minute schedule change in time.

Ongoing battle pitting Em against Cannon and Mariah Carey takes an unusual turn.

The ongoing back-and-forth pitting Eminem against Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon — which began with Em's "Bagpipes From Baghdad" and continued with Carey's "Obsessed" and then Em's "The Warning" — took an unusual turn over the weekend, as Cannon produced a series of quotes, original statements and Biblical tweets (concluding with one actually from the Bible) that, while not naming Eminem or "The Warning" directly, did seem to address the Mc's latest attack on his wife.
"Quote of the day: 'Never argue with fools because from a distance people can't tell who is who,' " he tweeted Friday to kick things off. What followed was a series of inspirational quotes apparently intended to defuse the situation and ultimately put "The Warning" in the past.
