Editors note: Alexis Allen Winter began her casting career in North Carolina in 2007 on One Tree Hill, and moved to L.A. in 2012 where she has worked in the offices of Laray Mayfield, Rich Delia, Courtney Bright and Nicole Daniels, Tamara Notcutt, Gail Goldberg and Sheila Jaffe, winning an Artios in 2020 for her work on To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Deadline asked her to weigh in on the current autition controversy involving self-tapes and how it is impacting her business.
I, like most of the casting community, have spent time reading over the latest articles on the current state of casting (and the comments on those articles). It has been gut-wrenching to read and try to digest, especially as someone who learned this industry in the Southeast, where self-tapes have been the prominent form of auditions since I started in 2007 working as a casting assistant and in extras casting.

Despite the many late-90s romantic comedies inspired by classic literature, "10 Things I Hate About You" has stood the test of time unlike any other. Based on "The Taming of the Shrew," the film remained faithful to its Shakespearean roots and was an endearing romantic comedy for the ages. "10 Things I Hate About You" followed the Stratford sisters, whose strict father won't allow his high schooler daughter Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) to date unless her older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) does. Kat is witty, snarky, and rebellious; she has her eyes set on college and doesn't want to waste time with boys. When new student Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) falls for Bianca, he hatches a plan to get Kat to date Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger), a rough-edged outsider with a glorious head of hair and devastatingly deep voice. Kind of a package deal, but Kat doesn't care.

Los Angeles has had dalliances with various mass-transit ideas the way Jennifer Aniston has relationships with other celebrities: They seem perfect until the heartbreak starts. So we're both excited and nervous with the announcement of the winning proposals of A New Infrastructure: Transit Solutions for Los Angeles, an open ideas competition for Los Angeles' public transit announced yesterday.
First place went to Joshua G. Stein, Jacob M. Brostoff, Jaclyn Thomforde, and Aaron Whelton for their concept Más Transit, where regional high-speed rail is added to Los Angeles without disrupting current roadway congestion using a new raised infrastructure.
