There's long been a hidden link between Hollyoaks and horror. Here are 10 actors who've made the jump from soap to gore...
Nb: This article contains spoilers.
There’s a moment in one of comedian Simon Amstell’s stand up shows where he recounts a conversation he once had with the executive producer of Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks. Trading on the commonly held opinion that Hollyoaks is “rubbish”, Amstell enquired as to why the producer didn’t try to make it better. The answer came that they did make it better, but people stopped watching.
Even by the not-so-great standards that soaps are measured, Hollyoaks has always been firmly towards the bottom of the ladder. The fictional Chester suburb where the majority of inhabitants are extraordinarily good looking but also extraordinarily stupid has been identified by its often wildly outlandish storylines and impossibly pretty people.

When I received my review copy of Strippers Vs Werewolves, I have to admit, I thought I was going to have keep it hidden and watch it late at night with the door closed. Completely judging it by its title and box art, I thought I was in for a night of cheap exploitative T n' A that I better keep to myself. You know, the kind of film that I would never intentionally choose to watch.
Yea, right. Who am I kidding?
Turns out, the letcherous qualities of Jonathan Glendening's Strippers Vs Werewolves ends at the premise. The rest is good clean fun, within reason. What we get is a London based (ie. thick thick accents) comedy where a pact of out of shape werewolves (meaning no six pack abs on display here) are at odds with a troupe of exotic dancers...

Last week, Joss Whedon returned to our screens with the DVD and Blu-ray release of The Cabin in the Woods, with which Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) made his directorial debut to brilliant critical acclaim, with a script he co-wrote with Whedon.
This week, Whedon returns once more to our home entertainment systems with the release of The Avengers, the year’s biggest film to date, and the third-highest-grossing film of all time. It’s been one we’ve been looking forward to ever since its release, and now it has arrived for us to bask in its awesomeness once more.
My picks of the week:
Joss Whedon’s The Avengers & Jay Oliva’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Part 1.
And Bond 50 – the complete 22-film James Bond collection on Blu-ray.

Director: Jonathan Glendening. Writers: Pat Higgins and Phillip Barron. Cast: Robert Englund, Steven Berkoff and Lysette Anthony. In a movie that is tentatively tantalizing by its title alone, Strippers vs. Werewolves, to wait ‘30 days’ in the movie’s timeline before the real action begins is tough. Also, that is an awfully long time before the battle can begin. In that duration, one rat pack can easily dispense with another, and make several stops for snacks along the way. When Justice, an exotic dancer defends herself against Mickey, a gangster who goes feral with lust, she does not know what she has started. The silver tipped pen she uses to protect herself with kills him. That results in many problems for Vixens, the strip club, when the mobsters realize one of their own has fallen. Thankfully, the gangster’s death does not get discovered until hours later. The staff has time...

Featuring: Isabella Calthorpe, Tom Felton, Gemma Atkinson
In Night Wolf, young student Sarah Tyler (Isabella Calthorpe) returns home from the United States to her dysfunctional family home in the English countryside. Sarah returns home to a father that seems isolated, a missing mother and gang of brothers that are all messed up in one way or another. While at home, she meets up with her brothers and a group of her old friends hanging out while a wild storm rages outside. The group notices some strange movements throughout the house that soon turn into a bloody rampage by this mysterious creature. Over the next 13 hours, Sarah and her friends are on the run within the house trying to survive the night.
It should be noted that Night Wolf is actually a British film called 13 Hrs from 2010 that has been repackaged for the North American market.

*here be spoilers. Director: Jonathan Glendening. Writers: Adam Phillips. Cast: Gemma Atkinson, Tom Felton, Joshua Bowman and Isabella Calthorpe Tagline: "A deadly secret is coming home." It is always strange to see a pin-up model headlining a film. Gemma Atkinson's film career can be summed up in six titles. Moving over to the crew, Jonathan Glendening is familiar to this reviewer for his terrible outing titled S.N.U.B. (reviewed here). Glendening also directed Strippers vs. Werewolves. With this type of pedigree, one might think they are entering amateur hour at the theatre. They or you would be right to think this. Night Wolf, previously titled 13 Hrs, is a werewolf film with many annoying characters. This is the same problem that plagued Glendening's S.N.U.B.. It is hard to enjoy a horror film when you just want all of the characters to fall off the face of the Earth.

Over the past few months, we’ve added a weekly Friday feature rounding up the new releases coming to the big screen each week, courtesy of our Mr. Rob Keeling, giving you a taste of all the brilliant(/not so brilliant) films entering your local cinemas at the weekend.
It recently occurred to me to start up a similar weekly feature, instead rounding up all* the films making their way to the shelves of your local video stores (and of course, increasingly, supermarkets) at the start of each week.
There are so many brilliant films often released in close proximity to each other that sometimes it’s just not possible to see everything you want to see on the big screen, not to mention the fact that not all films are released in a nearby cinema (particularly if you live outside of London). I’m a big believer in the...

Damsels In Distress (12A)
(Whit Stillman, 2011, Us) Greta Gerwig, Analeigh Tipton, Adam Brody, Ryan Metcalf, Megalyn Echikunwoke. 99 mins
Stillman casts a wry eye across the college campus, and settles on Gerwig's clique of preppy girls who confuse charity with condescension. The result is distinctively articulate, witty, gently surreal and hilariously sarcastic. But as well as parodying these misguided teens, Stillman clearly has great sympathy for them. It's good to have him back.
Avengers Assemble (12A)
(Joss Whedon, 2012, Us) Samuel L Jackson, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson. 142 mins
Considering the lack of leeway Whedon had with this superhero juggernaut, he pulls off a remarkable feat, keeping all the plates spinning with as much irony as he can get away with. It descends into a numbing effects orgy, but it's fast and fun along the way.
Albert Nobbs (15)

Director Jonathan Glendening of 13Hrs werewolf notoriety doesn’t move that far away from his furry feral fiends in his latest grizzly flick, Strippers Vs Werewolves.
This exceptionally daft, tongue-in-cheek pastiche of the erotic slasher B-movie also taps into the comic-book filmmaking fascination of recent years with deviant glee, but all with the sole purpose of entertaining in the most blood spewing and badly acted way. And for those who never tire of Robert ‘Freddy’ Englund cameos, there’s a treat for fans too.
After werewolf Mickey (Martin Kemp) is accidentally killed in strip club Vixens, the girls who work there have until the next full moon to work out how to respond and defend themselves, before his bloodthirsty wolf pack, led by Jack Ferris (Billy Murray), work out who is responsible and seek murderous retribution.

★★☆☆☆ It's probably unwise to analyse films like Strippers vs Werewolves (2012) too closely. Peel away the gimmicky editing (which is effective in a naive comic-book way), and what's left of this British produced horror-comedy from director Jonathan Glendening (responsible for the recent horror release Night Wolf (2012)) lacks any real guts. Starring Robert Englund, Steven Berkoff and newcomer Martin Compston, the presence of such stalwarts is really all that's of interest in this amateur tale of Lycanthrope activities in London's clubland.

I thought one of the coolest things about “Strippers vs. Werewolves” director Jonathan Glendening’s 2010 monster flick “13Hrs” was that you didn’t know what sort of creature you were dealing with until the end of the feature. Lionsgate pretty much spoils the surprise by not only retitling the film “Night Wolf” but also by sticking the beast front and center on the DVD artwork. At any rate, at least the film is finally getting a release here in the States. It’s not the sharpest werewolf movie you’ve ever seen, mind you, but it’s certainly quite a bit stronger than most of its direct-to-video brethren. Specifically, here’s what the film is about: Sarah (Isabella Calthorpe) has avoided coming home to visit her family for quite some time. But when she finally does arrive, a storm is raging through her hometown, and she and her family find themselves isolated.

Those of you with a taste for all things shlocky and low budget need not wait much longer to whet those appetites – 13Hrs director Jonathan Glendening is back with another beastie tale, albeit with his tongue planted firmly in cheek, for the post-Grindhouse exploitation horror Strippers vs. Werewolves.
When a werewolf leader is mistakenly killed within a seedy strip club in the darkest parts of London, the monsters decide to take revenge on the 'dancing talent' and return in full force and hungry for blood. The cast boasts a host of British television talent including Martin Kemp, Billy Murray, Simon Phillips, Steven Berkoff and a little treat in the form of a cameo from the man of your dreams himself, Robert Enlgund.
Shock sat down with the man at the helm to talk about his second foray into the werewolf sub-genre and ask him exactly why this one is worth sinking your teeth into.

Following the success of last year’s Cruel Britannia season, Horror Channel have announced another Brit-centric season, the Heritage Of Horror, which continues to showcase and celebrate British horror, past and present, at its finest – featuring two classics from the vaults and two brand new films, yet to be shown on UK television. I know I’ll be tuning in every Friday night – especially considering Horror Channel are showing one of my all-time favourite horror movies, the superb Blood on Satan’s Claw. I can also recommend 13Hrs, which I saw at FrightFest in 2010, it’s a great little (and by little I mean claustrophobic), werewolf movie. You can read my review of 13Hrs here.
From the press release:
First up, on Friday March 9, is Gary Sherman’s 1973 Death Line. Set on the London Underground, this moody shocker features brilliant horror icon Donald Pleasance in the lead role as a cockney copper.

Even though Jonathan Glendening's British werewolf thriller '13Hrs' was released on DVD back at Halloween 2010 here in the UK our American counterparts are yet to experience the houndish horror. The movie has been picked up by Lionsgate for distribution on DVD across the Us this April but will experience a title change from '13Hrs' to the disappointing 'Night Wolf'. This isn't the only Glendening helmed werewolf-related horror to see a release this year. How could we forget the intriguingly entitled 'Strippers vs Werewolves' starring 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' legend Robert Englund, 'Hostel's Barbara Nedeljakova and hottie stripper action from former soap stars Ali Bastian and Adele Silva. 'Night Wolf' stars Tom Felton ('The Rise of the Planet of the Apes'), Isabella Calthorpe, Gabriel Thomson, Joshua Bowman and busty ex-Hollyoaks star Gemma Atkinson (below). Check out the plot details plus the new proposed DVD artwork below.

Director: Jonathan Glendening.
Writer: John Adams and Peter Adams.
S.N.U.B! stands for Secret Nuclear Underground Bunker and the exclamation point is more hopeful than reality. This is a sub-standard indie feature which was shot in the United Kingdom which hosts a plethora of bad acting. The premise seems solid and exciting: a group of underground survivors is forced to the irradiated surface after a group of badly burned convicts sends them afoot. However, the weak writing creates an unbelievable atmosphere that creates more scoffs than actual chills up the spine.
The plot begins in an exciting fashion as a dirty or atomic bomb has been discovered in London's west end. The bomb squad seems to be on their first day with their tampering setting off this devastating device. At the same time, a junior minister has forgone his responsibilities to warn the public of their potential doom...

Back in 2008, Jenna Jameson, Robert Englund and Director Jay Lee showed us that while a stripper-based Horror movie may not exactly get you any Academy nods, it is still a viable genre that will at least get you ample rotation on Netflix.
This time around however, the formula has been readjusted from Zombies, as was the case with the aforementioned Zombie Strippers, to Werewolves, in the upcoming Strippers vs. Werewolves!
In order to satisfy your fiendishly curious minds, I have offered up a glimpse at the first official poster for the film below:
Strippers vs. Werewolves is Directed by Jonathan Glendening, and includes cast members Robert Englund, Billy Murray, Barbara Nedeljekova and Sarah Douglas. The film’s poster implies a winter 2011 release, but as it is still in production, and since winter has already passed, perhaps we will have to wait until October to see this film’s release.
Cheers ahoy to Bloody Disgusting.

If it wasn't already highlighted by the fact that not only hot UK ex soap-star Adele Silva and 'Hostel's uber-sexy Barbara Nedeljakova had been cast 'Strippers vs Werewolves' could have already been overlooked. But as that's not the case today's news would still certainly help Jonathan Glendening's new werewolf flick push it's way through to the tip of horror news. It seems that British scream queen Sarah Douglas (better known as Ursa from 'Superman' and 'Superman II' has signed up to the Glendening project as the owner of the strip club where the...well, strippers...hang out! It's not the first time Jonny's tried his hand at the lycanthropic topic either after having some success with his last horror project '13Hrs', starring ex-'Hollyoaks' babe Gemma Atkinson....

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about producer Jonathan Sothcott’s Strippers vs Werewolves, but that’s all changed with the announcement that Sothcott has found a director in Jonathan Glendening (13Hrs), who’ll be joining actresses Adele Silva and just-announced Barbara Nedeljakova (Hostel) on the project.

Brit director Jonathan Glendening has been named the helmer for new UK horror 'Strippers vs Werewolves'. It's been a while since we reported anything on this project, when director Pat Higgins had just provided producer Jonathon Sothcott with the script, but now everything seems to be moving forward in a positive way. Glendering is an interesting choice since just recently seeing the release of his own werewolf feature '13Hrs' starring ex-'Hollyoaks' star Gemma Atkinson. However, now only have they locked in a director but have also cast 'Hostel' euro hottie Barbara Nedeljakova ('The Hike', 'Children of the Corn: The Dweller'). Babs will join the previously cast ex-soap star Adele Silva (below). This is certainly starting to gain my interest in a big way! This past Halloween weekend FilmShaft was entrenched at the Grimm Up North Horror and Sci-Fi Festival in Manchester for three days of horror entertainment. It was a case of the good, the bad and the ugly. Isn’t it always?

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a good creature film, and while Jonathan Glendening’s “13 Hours” (also spelled “13 Hrs”) isn’t the best the genre has to offer, it’s still a reasonably entertaining effort. At the very least, at about 80 minutes of running time it never once bored me, which, let me assure you, is a major win. Though I have to admit, the set-up was a bit much, with zero traces of anything supernatural or creature-ish happening whatsoever until the creature begins attacking at around the 20-minute mark. I suppose we should be thankful Glendening and screenwriter Adam Phillips care enough to even attempt at proper introductions of the various meat – er, I mean, characters. Unfortunately they all come across as dicks instead of people I should be rooting for, so there you go. “13 Hours” opens with Sarah (Isabella Calthorpe) returning to her family’s...
