With “Wish,” Disney Animation celebrates its 100th anniversary by merging the 2D legacy of watercolor background paintings (dating back to “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”) with cutting-edge CG. The result was a revitalization of the retro aesthetic in every department to better display the hand of the artist. Like a gateway drug, it has already carried over into an as-yet-unannounced feature with a very different 2D look.

A 4K restoration version of the 1937 animated Disney classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” is coming to Disney+ next Monday, October 16, in celebration of The Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary. The restored edition is the result of the combined efforts of the Walt Disney Studios Restoration and Preservation team working in concert with key artists from the Walt Disney Animation Studios – the same team that earned plaudits for their restoration of Disney’s 1950 classic “Cinderella” (which began streaming over Disney+ on August 25).
Disney Animation artists Michael Giaimo and animator/director Eric Goldberg were honored to re-team with their colleagues at Walt Disney Studios on the project.

Heigh-ho! Before Disney yet again tarnishes the beautiful animated memories of the classics that built the studio with a live-action remake, the studio is continuing its 100th-anniversary celebrations with a 4K restoration of the 1937 classic "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," their very first feature-length film. The restoration comes to Disney+ on October 16, 2023, and it's also available on 4K Uhd, including a special Disney 100 SteelBook, starting October 10.
This news comes after Disney released a 4K restoration of "Cinderella" earlier this year, which restored the original colors and the grandeur of the film and helped preserve it for new generations. For this new 4K restoration, the studio tapped the Walt Disney Studios Restoration and Preservation team as well as artists from Walt Disney Animation Studios, the same team who worked on the "Cinderella" restoration, which included artist Michael Giaimo (now the production designer for "Wish"), as well as legendary animator/director...

Disney’s unrivaled 1937 animation classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is coming to Disney+ in a 4K restoration, debuting Oct. 16 and completed to commemorate The Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary.
“The opportunity to help restore Snow White was both an honor and a challenge,” said Disney Animation animator/director Eric Goldberg, adding that he and Disney Animation artist Mike Giaimo “felt we owed a debt to history to get it looking as beautiful and as accurate to the original colors as we could.”
The first Walt Disney animated feature, Snow White is widely considered one of Hollywood’s greatest early triumphs. After its original release, the film was recognized by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences with a special honorary Oscar – one large Oscar statuette accompanied by seven smaller ones – which was presented to Walt Disney by Shirley Temple. With “Wish,” Disney Animation celebrates its 100th anniversary with a film that bridges Walt’s era and the company’s modern sensibility. Directed by Chris Buck (“Frozen”) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (head of story for “Raya and the Last Dragon“), it’s an animated musical origin story about the magical wishing star with a painterly, 2D aesthetic in CG that’s every bit as impressive as “Across the Spider-Verse” in displaying the hand of the artist.
Disney Animation offered a 20-minute sneak peek at the upcoming film in mid-September at the El Capitan in Hollywood — and you can watch the latest trailer below. “Wish” is crucially about legacy and incorporating Disney’s beloved hand-drawn aesthetic with the studio’s latest digital tech. The designers and animators create a nostalgic watercolor look for the background paintings inspired by “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Pinocchio,” and “Sleeping Beauty.”

Those who spend too much time online (who doesn't these days?) have surely gotten wind of the "controversy" around Disney's upcoming live-action "Snow White" adaptation. For those just tuning in, it all boils down to the film's perceived "wokeness" -- as though trying to be sensitive about the way you approach a fairy tale that's at least 200 years old and depicts a group of men with dwarfism as fantastical beings who reside in a forest is somehow a bad thing. That's not to say there aren't valid criticisms to be raised about Disney remaking yet another one of its classic animated features (especially this one). But instead of continuing to debate a film that nobody's seen yet, let's talk about the one that already exists, shall we?

Disney+ has announced that they will debut a new 4K restoration of the 1950 animated classic, Cinderella, on August 25th. Check out a preview clip of the new restoration below.
The re-release of Cinderella will coincide with World Princess Week, and arrives as part of the ongoing Disney100 celebrations, which mark the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company. The new restoration will update the look and sound of the 1950 release, but will do so while honoring the artistic vision of the original animators. According to a press release, restoring the animation has been a “labor of love” that’s spanned multiple years.
“Working with our restoration team along with internal technical experts, outside vendors, and advisors from Walt Disney Animation Studios, we were able to make this 1950 classic look and sound better than ever,” Kevin Schaeffer, director of Restoration for Walt Disney Studios, said in a press statement. “We began...

Disney’s “Cinderella,” released in 1950 and largely considered to be one of the greatest animated films ever is set to be given new life thanks to a 4K restoration that will debut on Disney+ on August 25.
According to an official press release the restoration was “the culmination of a multi-year effort involving the Walt Disney Studios Restoration and Preservation team, working closely with key players from Walt Disney Animation Studios.” And, truth be told, this new 4K version is stunning.
It had previously been available as a Disney Movie Club exclusive earlier this year, but its Disney+ debut marks the first time the restoration has been available to stream. The new version also streamed earlier this year at the Berlin International Film Festival, where, the release notes, “it had won a Golden Bear Award 52 years earlier in its international debut.”

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Disney is celebrating accordingly with a salute to 28 of their Classic Shorts, including one familiar to horror fans: “The Skeleton Dance.”
The Walt Disney Company announced today in a press release that Disney+ will begin debuting a collection of 28 newly restored Walt Disney Animation Studios classic shorts starting on Friday, July 7 and will run through October.
While the curated package of shorts highlight a variety of popular Disney characters throughout the century, it’s the restoration of 1929’s “The Skeleton Dance” that’s most notable.
The Silly Symphonies short, directed by Walt Disney, featured four skeletons dancing under the full moon in a graveyard, a perfect Gothic mood setter that showcased a different side to Disney. We’re always a sucker for stunning gateway horror, especially of the macabre variety.

For many Elsa fans, it’s the highlight of Frozen 2. Inside of Ahtohallan, a river of memories that’s been frozen into a glacier of ice, Queen Elsa of Arendelle finally confronts the truth about her past, her family’s history, and her own soul. And she does it all while singing an empowering anthem. Yet even with Idina Menzel’s highest of high notes, the song is unlike “Let It Go” due to a melancholic undertone about Elsa facing the ghosts of her family’s legacy and accepting her full identity.
The scene is preferred by many over the more straight-forward attempt to recapture “Let It Go,” aka “Into the Unknown,” including apparently Menzel herself, who previously hinted she would’ve liked to see Disney campaign “Show Yourself” for Best Song at the Oscars. It didn’t work out that way, but then as we now know the...

It’s not often that design helps drive the narrative in animation, but when production designer Michael Giaimo had a brainstorm for the four elemental spirits of fire, earth, wind, and water in “Frozen 2,” it altered the animation and led to the ultimate transformation of Elsa (Idina Menzel) as the Snow Queen.
“From the very beginning, there was this idea of Elsa connecting with the elements of nature,” said Giaimo, who was nominated for his work on “Frozen 2” by the Art Directors Guild Awards. “But it was actually slow in growing, narratively, that there would be four elements and how they would be described. It wasn’t a given at the beginning that they would be exemplified by living creatures. But it all evolved. And I would say the art department played a major role in helping to develop that elemental narrative.”

On December 9, the Art Directors Guild announced the nominees for its 24th annual awards, which will be handed out on Feb. 1. These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the Academy Awards. Over the first 23 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories.
According to our expert predictions, period film contender “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” is the clear frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Production Design. We expect that three of its rival in that race at the Adg — “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “1917” — will also contend at the Oscars. The fifth Academy Awards nominee is expected to be “Little Women,” but its odds might lengthen after being snubbed by the guild.

“The Irishman,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “1917” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” on Monday all nabbed nominations for the Art Directors Guild Awards’ period-film category, the Adg category that most closely corresponds to the Academy Award for Best Production Design.
In the Adg fantasy-film category, which typically supplies one or two Oscar nominees, the guild singled out “Ad Astra,” “Aladdin,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Dumbo,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”
Both of those categories were expanded from five to six nominees because of ties.

Disney’s “Frozen” turned the fairytale paradigm on its head when it swept into theaters in 2013, inspiring a generation of freshly empowered Annas and Elsas to “Let It Go” on its way to winning Oscars for animated feature and original song.
Six years later, directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and the original voice cast have returned with “Frozen 2.” The princesses have grown up, as have their fans, trading the upheavals of adolescence for the adjustments of adulthood in a new story that journeys beyond the kingdom of Arendelle.
The first “Frozen” made $93.5 million for its domestic debut, going on to earn $1.27 billion worldwide to become the top-grossing animated feature of all time. While it’s still too early to predict if the sequel will topple that record, “Frozen 2” opened Nov. 22 to $130 million domestically and $223 million overseas for a global tally of $350 million. There’s an interesting continuity going on in the Disney “Frozen” world. In the “Frozen Fever” short (2015), Elsa (Idina Menzel) catches cold and nearly ruins the birthday party for Anna (Kristen Bell). And, in “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure,” which opens in front of Pixar’s “Coco” (a first for Disney), there are no holiday traditions to embrace during their first Christmas together, also thanks to Elsa’s curse.
Clearly, there are emotional loose ends being tied up between the sibling princesses, which will presumably allow them to be better prepared to confront whatever threat awaits them in “Frozen 2” (November 27, 2009).
Meanwhile, Olaf (Josh Gad) continues to evolve as the child-like snowman in the 21-minute featurette (originally intended as an ABC holiday special). But with its eye-popping animation and emphasis on family and tradition, “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure” makes the perfect opener for “Coco,” which embraces similar thematic territory during Día de los Muertos.

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs is a true Hollywood classic. Released for the first time in December 1937. the first full-length Disney feature is a brilliant portrayal of the brothers Grimm’s chilling tale of an evil queen and the beautiful Snow White. The film reflects many of the social conditions of the time; the depression had just passed and songs such as “whistle while you work” were intended to promote a strong work ethic to the young children of America. The budget of the film was a staggering $500,000, around double the cost of an average film, yet the payoff was huge as this was the film that launched Disney’s decades-long domination of the animated features market.
Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs arrives on Blu-ray February 2nd in a new two disc set packaged in a slipcover that replicates the artwork beneath. This is not the first release of the film.

Disney's Frozen has provided a major boost to Norwegian tourism.
The movie's art director Michael Giaimo used Norway's coastal town Bergen as a reference point and model for the film's kingdom of Arendelle.
Disney partnered with tourism promoter Innovation Norway to attract interest to the country's coast, and VisitNorway.com added a Frozen banner to its homepage.
Meanwhile, Flight Tracker reports that searches for Norwegian flights have risen by 153% following the movie, while hotel bookings are up 37%.
Frozen recently became the fifth-highest grossing film of all time.
It also overtook Toy Story 3 to become the highest grossing animated film of all time upon its release in December 2013.

Inside the Ice Hotel might have been chilly but 'Frozen' art director Michael Giaimo and producer Peter Del Vecho weren't going to let a little thing like arctic temperatures keep them from giving interviews. The Oscar winning blockbuster film recently joined the elite ranks of the billion dollar box office and the two couldn't be more thrilled, despite the challenges present in rending each and every snowflake in 3D. According to Michael Giaimo, "I thought years ago, twenty years ago, when I was working on Pocahontas that that was challenging, but I will tell you that to work on a computer graphic film is much more dense in terms of its layering. There's just so much more detail. 2D is more illustrative, let's say. [2D] is hand drawn, even the backgrounds are hand painted but everything in a CG film has to be realized. That means snow has to look really like snow,...

"Frozen" comes out on DVD this week, and we can't think of a better month for the film to be released. Not only did the $1-billion-grossing phenomenon just win two memorable Academy Awards on March 2nd, but let's face it, for a bulk of the country, it's been a frozen state of mind this winter -- even as we supposedly approach Spring on the calendar. March is also Women's History Month, and "Frozen" is one of Disney's most girl-empowering Princess films. But of course, the movie's inspiring messages about conquering your fears and letting love guide you are universal, so we're celebrating "Frozen's" DVD release with a tribute to it and five other Disney films with exemplary messages for viewers of all ages.

Interview Mark Harrison 6 Dec 2013 - 06:27
Mark chats to the co-directors of Disney's Frozen, Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee...
If you've checked out our review already, you'll know that we adored Frozen, the latest addition to the Disney canon. It's an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen, a project that has been in development limbo at the House of Mouse since the days of Walt Disney himself.
Back in 1943, Disney and Samuel Goldwyn collaborated on a biopic of the author, including animated adaptations of his stories. Goldwyn eventually parted ways with the studio to make the live-action 1952 movie, Hans Christian Andersen, leading to a number of animated projects that had been going on at Disney, including both The Snow Queen and The Little Mermaid, were shelved.
Some time after 1989's The Little Mermaid kicked off the Disney Renaissance, the studio came back around to look at the story in the late 1990s.

Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.
I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.
Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.

In Disney’s Frozen, the usually sunny kingdom of Arendelle has suddenly been cast in a terrible winter when Elsa, the Queen, accidentally releases her snow powers. She flees the kingdom to the harsh cold mountains. Anna, the younger headstrong free-spirited sibling (voiced by Kristen Bell), must save Elsa (Idina Menzel) from her own terrible powers.
At Disney, it’s essential for everyone to “do their homework.” For the team of artists, this meant a trip to Norway.
“If there’s a location that you’re riffing off of, go to that place. Experience it,” says Frozen art director Michael Giaimo about the philosophy of Disney Animation. “No matter how many Google images you look at, you cannot get the flavor or feel of a location unless you go there – the textures, the minutia, the quality of light, the time of day – you’ve got to feel those things for yourself.

The Funny Face characters could be making their way to television.
The characters -- which include Loud Mouth Lime, Jolly Olly Orange and Goofy Grape -- were originally featured on Pillsbury drink packets in the 1960s and '70s.
Renegade Animation, which produces the Cartoon Network series "Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi" and "The Mr. Men Show", has obtained the rights to the Funny Face characters from Carson Creations to produce an animated series based on their "wacky shenanigans." It will be aimed at kids 6-11 and will recall the animation style and the spirit of such classics as "Tom & Jerry" and Looney Tunes.
Renegade is producing a pilot episode while seeking distribution and licensing agreements.
"It's a delightful opportunity to be funny in a way that is missing from the cartoon landscape right now," said Renegade's Ashley Postlewaite, who will executive produce.
Darrell Van Citters will direct, while Michael Giaimo is heading up visual development.
