Any filmmaker is lucky to make a single cult classic in their career. Outside of the masters of the genre, it’s rare for someone to helm more than one movie that resonates with a passionate fanbase, regardless of size, over the course of multiple decades – but Jeff Lieberman earned the distinction despite only having five films to his name.
Lieberman made his directorial debut with 1976’s man-eating worm flick Squirm and quickly followed it up with 1978’s killer trip Blue Sunshine. 1981 saw the release of his backwoods slasher Just Before Dawn, after which his feature output slowed considerably. He directed the 1988 sci-fi comedy Remote Control and penned the script for 1994’s The NeverEnding Story III before making his return to horror in 2004 with his final film to date, Satan’s Little Helper.
Ostensibly a cheap, direct-to-video slasher, Satan’s Little Helper – like the rest of Lieberman’s output – subverts expectations.

“Field of Dreams” cinematographer John Lindley has been elected at the new national president of the International Cinematographers Guild, a month after Lewis Rothenberg resigned from the post.
The news was announced Sunday following an online meeting of the national executive board. He will serve for the remaining two years and two months of Rothenberg’s term. Rothenberg, who was elected over incumbent Steven Poster last May, left the post partly due to his refusal to change his legal residence from New Jersey to Los Angeles, as required by the local rules.
Lindley was the second national vice president of the guild and has served on the national executive board for 13 years. His feature film cinematography credits include “Pleasantville,” “You’ve Got Mail,” and “Sneakers,” while his recent credits include “Castle Rock,” “Unbelievable,” “Divorce” and “Snowfall.”

Leaders of the International Cinematographers Guild have told members that there will be no charge for coronavirus testing for participants in the Motion Picture Industry health plan. “Mpi has confirmed that testing for Covid-19 will be covered by the plan without co-pays or co-insurance,” the Icg said in a message to its 9,000 members. The Icg operates as Local 600 of the International Alliance of Theaterical Stage Employees. It’s the largest Iatse local in Hollywood and represents the below-the-line camera crews along with publicists. The letter was signed by interim national president Dejan Georgevich, national executive director Rebecca Rhine and nine other officers and executives. The missive offered reassurance to plan participants, adding that talks are underway to address the issue of members maintaining eligibility amid the current suspension of most productions. “Financially the plans are stable, and currently Mpi maintains over one year of reserves to meet benefit obligations,” the guild leaders said.

Exclusive: The Cinematographers Guild will hold a special national membership meeting next month to answer questions about the recent resignation of the guild’s president Lewis Rothenberg, who stepped down two weeks ago after only eight months on the job.
The meeting, set for March 7, comes after more than 900 members – about a tenth of the guild’s membership – signed a petition calling for such a meeting in advance of the March 15 national executive board meeting that will choose his successor.
“The single agenda item for the meeting will be to answer any questions surrounding the recent resignation of the national president and the process by which your national executive board will fill that position on March 15, as required under our governing documents,” said Dejan Georgevich, the guild’s interim national president, in a message to the guild’s members.

Lewis Rothenberg has resigned as president of the Cinematographers Guild, Iatse Local 600, citing differences with the union’s senior staff and national officers.
Rothenberg’s departure, announced Friday, stemmed partly from his refusal to change his legal residence from New Jersey to Los Angeles, as required by the local rules.
He defeated incumbent Steven Poster last May for a three-year term. Poster had been the elected head of the Icg since 2006, but Rothenberg won the position through a campaign that promised more organizing and better communication with the membership, which numbers more than 8,700 and is the largest Iatse local in Hollywood, repping camera crews and publicists.
“My vision for this union, as to who runs it and how it should be run, is not fully aligned with some of our senior staff and national officers,” Rothenberg said in a message to members Friday. “While I truly believe everyone in the...

Lewis Rothenberg has resigned as president of the Cinematographers Guild, Iatse Local 600, citing “differences” with the union’s senior staff and national officers. He was elected to the post last May, defeating longtime incumbent Steven Poster.
In a message Friday to the local’s members and staff, Rothenberg said “that my vision for this union, as to who runs it and how it should be run, is not fully aligned with some of our senior staff and National Officers. While I truly believe everyone in the leadership of this Local has the members in mind, there are major ideological differences between some of us. I ran for this office to bring change, unite us, and increase activism. Regretfully I do not feel that I will be able to accomplish this with the vast differences of philosophy of the leadership team.”
