Pulsar Content has closed major deals on “Niki,” a biopic of French-American artist Niki de Saint-Phalle.
“Niki” marks the feature debut of popular French actor Céline Sallette and stars Charlotte Le Bon (“The Walk” “Saint-Laurent”) as de Saint-Phalle. Pulsar closed deals with Neue Visionen (Germany), Movies Inspired (Italy), Paradiso (Benelux), Praessens (Switzerland), Vercine (Spain), Magic Films (Cis), Best Films (Baltics), Shaw (Singapour), Sky Digi (Taiwan) and Immovision (Brazil).
The movie portrays Saint-Phalle from the age of 23, when she’s still a model and an aspiring actor who is married and has a two-year-old daughter, Laura. Together, they flee the U.S. during the oppressive McCarthy era and come to France, where they experience a short-lived euphoria. Soon, distant and frightening memories begin to emerge in Niki’s mind. Her vocation as an artist will be her salvation.
Le Bon is an actor-turned-director whose feature debut “Falcon Lake” bowed at Cannes.

The Last King of Scotland. In 2007, Forest Whitaker won the Academy Award for his performance as Ugandan dictator and army general Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland (2006), becoming only the fourth Black man to win Best Actor. Lauded as the role of his career, critics praised his “full-throated, technically accomplished” performance, and his ability to “seize the space and show us how he can rage”.“Full-throated” the performance was indeed, but it was a throat filled with an accent that neither sounded like Amin’s nor any person from Koboko, northern Uganda, where the general was born. “Technically accomplished,” but the accent, directed by dialect coach Robert Easton, was neither technical, nor accomplished. Linguistically speaking, Whitaker’s accent is riddled with instances of the US English rhotic R pronunciation (which is pronounced at the back of the throat without a trill), and a combination of vowel pronunciations from across East Africa,...

Harrison Ford has had feuds with several big-name actors throughout the course of his career, from Alec Baldwin over the Jack Ryan role to Josh Hartnett on the set of Hollywood Homicide. And you can add Brad Pitt to that list, who Harrison Ford butted heads with while making the 1997 thriller The Devil’s Own.
While Harrison Ford does praise Brad Pitt overall, he says in a new Esquire profile that their issues stemmed from exploring their characters and developing the screenplay. “Brad developed the script. Pulsar Content has acquired “Niki,” a film about the famous French-American artist Niki de Saint-Phalle, for international sales. The Paris-based banner will introduce the period project to buyers at the Cannes market with exclusive first stills.
“Niki” marks the feature debut of popular French actor Céline Sallette and stars Charlotte Le Bon (“The Walk” “Saint-Laurent”) as de Saint-Phalle.
Le Bon recently made her feature debut with “Falcon Lake” — which bowed at Cannes last year — and previously starred in Robert Zemeckis’s “The Walk,” as well as Terry George’s “The Promise” and Jalil Lespert’s “Saint-Laurent.” Le Bon stars in “Niki” opposite Damien Bonnard (“Les Misérables“).
The movie will portray Saint-Phalle from the age of 23, when she’s still a model and an aspiring actor who is married and has a two-year-old daughter, Laura. Together, they flee the U.S. during the oppressive McCarthy era and come to France, where they experience a short-lived euphoria.

With an unprecedented number of Oscar nominations for Irish talent and films this year, everyone was celebrating the green wave at the 17th annual Oscar Wilde Awards, held Thursday night — before the rain arrived — at Bad Robot in Santa Monica. “It’s amazing, there are 7 million people on that island, and all of them were nominated and are here tonight,” host J.J. Abrams joked, in a year when 25 percent of the Academy Award acting nominations are held by Irish actors.
The Oscar Wilde honorees this year were Irish actresses Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Jessie Buckley (Women Talking), Eve Hewson (Flora and Son) and An Cailίn Ciúin (The Quiet Girl), the first Irish language film nominated for an Academy Award. Created by the US-Ireland Alliance, the Oscar Wilde Awards celebrate the work of those from Ireland — and some who are not — who contribute to the movies, television and music.

When the initial announcement was made that eight categories would be pre-taped and then edited into the 2022 Oscars broadcast, we all knew the short film categories — Best Live Action Short, Best Documentary Short and Best Animated Short — would be the first on the chopping block. While these projects are the least seen of all the Oscar nominees, the categories have given us some amazing moments over the years. So rather than wallow in our sadness about not seeing these doled out live, let’s take a look back at four of the best speeches from past Best Live Action Short winners. Hopefully the academy realizes soon that the short categories are something special and should be left alone.
Will any of this year’s five Best Live Action Short nominees give us Omg moments on the Oscar stage? They are: “Ala Kachuu – Take and Run” (Maria Brendle and Nadine Lüchinger...

Los Angeles-based physician and producer Eric Esrailian, who recently received a medal from Pope Francis for his philanthropic activity around awareness of the Armenian Genocide, is developing a TV series entitled “Ceasefire” about the Northern Ireland peace process.
Oscar-winning Irish writer-director Terry George (“In the Name of the Father”) is attached to direct.
“Ceasefire” is to depict the dynamics and diplomacy that facilitated the historic Good Friday peace agreement of April 1998, which helped transform Northern Ireland after decades of bitter conflict, in hopes that it can help similar political situations.
“You look at the events around the world and you say: ‘Where has there been a successful brokering of peace between two hostile opposing forces?'” Esrailian said, citing other political flashpoints such as the Israel–Palestine conflict and the civil war in Ethiopia’s Tigray region.

Photo: ‘The Promise’ Today the Armenian people have found their home in the Glendale diaspora, placing their roots in the small but flourishing city and leaving imprints of their beautiful culture across it. Their story is a long but brave one, a story of families torn apart by the tragedies of the 1915 Armenian Genocide and then of their reunion in cities across the world. Often undermined in history, the Armenian Genocide lacked publicity by non-Armenian audiences until the film, ‘The Promise’ (2017) raised much-needed awareness. Directed by Belfast-born Terry George, and Robin Swicord, an American screenwriter, ‘The Promise’, offers an inside glimpse into the lives of Armenians backlit by the genocide and the beginnings of World War I and II, two closely tied events. Streaming platforms are increasingly gaining traction across the Middle East, prompting Arab TV production companies to start transitioning from churning out strictly local shows — many of which launched during Ramadan — to making bolder skeins, some with ambitions for international play.
After a slow start, the subscription video-on-demand market in the 13 leading Arabic territories is expected to rise from 8.61 million paying SVOD customers by the end of this year to 15 million by 2026, according to a recent study by London-based Digital TV Research.
Over the next five years, the study predicts that current market leader Netflix will increase subs from 3.4 million to 5.4 million, beating Amazon, which is still a small player in the region, and also beating fast-growing local platforms Shahid VIP, Starz Play Arabia and Osn, whose numbers are currently boosted by its content deal with Disney. Paul Rusesabagina, whose heroics during the Rwandan genocide were depicted in the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda, was convicted of terror-related charges Monday in Kigali.
According to the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency, Rusesabagina has been sentenced to 25 years in prison “for being part of a terrorist group that conducted raids on Rwanda, claiming lives of civilians, wounding others and looting properties.”
Rusesabagina has been critical of the country’s president Paul Kagame and his government, calling for democratic elections. He has called the trial “a sham,” pulling out of the proceedings in March after being arrested in August 2020.
Human rights organizations have questioned the merits of the case, with the Clooney Foundation for Justice today calling it a “show trial,” and that Rusesabagina’s “conviction lacked sufficient guarantees of fairness required by international and African standards and should not be relied upon.”
Don Cheadle portrayed Rusesabagina in the Terry George-directed movie, which earned three Oscar nominations.

Sony Pictures and Chinese production company Tencent have landed rights to “Finding Gobi,” a touching memoir about a stray dog who befriends a runner, and plan to adapt it as a feature film.
20th Century Fox originally optioned the book in 2017, but the project was abandoned when Disney acquired Fox’s film assets two years later.
“Finding Gobi” was written by Dion Leonard, a seasoned ultra-marathon runner who crossed paths with an abandoned dog while competing in a 155-mile race through the Gobi Desert in China. In something of a heroic feat, the small pup — later named Gobi — stuck around and kept pace with Leonard across mountains and sand dunes for 77 miles.
Gobi later went missing, but with the help of strangers and an outpouring of internet assistance, Leonard was able to track her down and reunite with the dog that changed his life.

In July 1995, 8372 Bosnian Muslim - mostly men and boys - lost their lives in the Srebrenica genocide, during the Bosnian War. The enormity and horror of that number is given a specific human face by writer/director Jasmila Zbanic, who considers the events leading up to it from the perspective of Un interpreter Aida Selmanagic (Jasna Duricic), her headteacher husband Nihad (Izudin Bajrovic) and their two teenage sons Hamdija (Boris Ler) and Sejo (Dino Bajrovic).
Zbanic's hard-hitting drama - which has been selected by Bonsia and Herzegovina as their foreign language Oscar nomination - carries echoes of Hotel Rwanda as it explores the costly failures of the Un, although Zbanic achieves a profound sadness beneath its almost unbearable tension that Terry George's film never quite managed. With new cases spiking across the country, a second round of mandatory quarantine and social distancing appears to be more likely than ever. For some states, it’s already a reality. Fear not, however, because this time – like last time – Netflix will be there to keep you company throughout your lonely indoor days.
The coronavirus pandemic has boosted people’s appetite for content and Netflix, among other platforms, have reported a substantial increase in its subscriber base while other businesses in the entertainment industry are flailing. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, though, as each week the streamer needs to find more and more content to satiate viewers. This time around, Netflix has gotten its hands on a forgotten Christian Bale movie, which just hit the site today.

CBS is eyeing “cost-effective” original programming that it can air on Saturday evenings ahead of 48 Hours.
The broadcaster largely airs repeats on Saturday night between 8pm and 10pm ahead of the news/documentary show that has run since 1988.
But CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl said he was personally invested to find a show for Saturdays.

2018 has been a very prolific year for three-time Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix. He has already starred in two acclaimed films — as a gun-for-hire in Lynne Ramsay‘s “You Were Never Really Here” and Gus Van Sant‘s biopic about paralyzed cartoonist John Callahan, “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot.” And now Phoenix returns to the nation’s theaters in Jacques Audiard‘s Western, “The Sisters Brothers,” for which Audiard recently won the Best Director prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
Phoenix has been no stranger to awards circles. He has been nominated for three Academy Awards, five Golden Globe Awards (including a win for 2005’s “Walk the Line”) and four Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Phoenix looks to have a busy 2019 as well as he stars in the title role as DC Comics’ “Joker,” focusing on the iconic supervillain in a film directed by “The Hangover’s” Todd Phillips.

Babieka Films, one of Spain’s top production services providers for international shoots, has teamed with videogames entrepreneur Ignacio Navas and company La Noche Americana to promote a new film and TV facility in the country, the Navarra Film Studios.
Set in the Western Pyrenees region of Navarre, Navarra Film Studios aims to supply production services to the growing demand of film and TV shoots, boosted by Navarre’s attractive tax incentives policy.
Spain lacks a high-profile film and TV studio facility, especially since Alicante’s Ciudad de la Luz complex ceased its activity in 2012.
Supported by the Navarre regional government, the new studios will focus on three business areas: Tax incentives, sound stages and tech services.
