As much as Doctor Who season 12 has got right, there have still been a couple of areas that need improving carried over from season 11. First there’s the character development of the Doctor’s companions and second is the inelegant way this version of the show likes to tackle the theme-of-the-week. With episode 7, titled “Can You Hear Me?”, we have an outing that encapsulates these two issues in a nutshell. It’s far from a total washout, as it tries its best to deal with one of these problems, but I wouldn’t call it a standout, either.
Things start off as they mean to continue with some pluses and negatives. With the plot split between 14th century Syria, present-day Sheffield and outer space, this is the third episode in a row with the story spread across multiple locations/timelines. This is certainly a neat device when used sparingly but,...

As Joseph (Ben Whishaw) sits at the table with his parents (Ellie Haddington and Ian Gelder), he puts his mouth to a glass. He wraps his lips around the rim as his breathing starts to heave. The others continue eating; he starts to lock his jaw. Then the glass cracks. He’s done this before a lot but never like this, and when he finds himself spitting blood into the bathroom sink with his mom screaming on the other side of the door, it seems that his tics have finally caught up with him.
That’s not to say he’s ever been a lax guy, but, to put it lightly, some things are getting to him. There are too many people, not enough manners. It’s too loud outside his apartment, too quiet inside his own head. It seems that only his job as an airport checkpoint officer grants...

There’s mannered, there’s manic, and then there’s the malfunctioning pinball-machine delirium that Ben Whishaw brings to “Surge”: a blinking, buzzing, flashing clatter of hyper-accelerated impulses, chicken-fried synapses and staggered hypnic jerks that never culminate in sleep. You wouldn’t expect stillness from a film called “Surge,” and in that respect only does Whishaw zig where you expect him to zig — to say nothing of his character, a humdrum airport worker who one day snaps in spectacularly feral fashion, embarking on the unlikeliest of London crime sprees. It’s quite a performance, sure to exhilarate some and aggravate others, and it joins the dots of Aneil Karia’s stylish if somewhat overstimulated debut feature while adding several disconnected ones of its own.
A rare shot of genuinely frenzied energy in British genre cinema, “Surge” seems likely to prompt comparisons to the recent work of Benny and Josh Safdie — in particular,...

Question: What does your daemon look like? Is it a ferret, a fox, a monkey, a regal snow leopard? In the world of His Dark Materials, the joint BBC-HBO adaptation of Phillip Pullman’s hugely acclaimed young-adult fantasy series, everybody’s got a literal spirit animal — magical creatures called “daemons” that function like having an external animal-shaped soul you can run around with and talk to. As a way to engage the audience, daemons rank right up there with Harry Potter’s Gryffindor-to-Hufflepuff sorting matrix, or Game of Thrones‘ great houses,...

The creative team behind His Dark Materials has called the Philip Pullman adaptation a “challenging” show to write but the “quintessential” HBO/BBC co-production.
Writer Jack Thorne and exec producer Jane Tranter, who runs production company Bad Wolf, spoke about the big-budget fantasy epic alongside stars including Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda at its TCA press tour panel.
Thorne admitted that he wrote several dozens drafts for the first episode of the show, which is set to launch on HBO in October. “We wrote papers to ourselves about all the different ideas in the show. We wanted to do a Ph.D. in Phillip Pullman and we tried to do a Ph.D. in His Dark Materials. I wrote 46 drafts of episode one in order to find a way to tell this story as elegantly as possible. [Pullman’s] denseness is a blessing and a curse; it’s so exciting.

There’s nothing more delightful than watching Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman revel in all of that cheeky queer subtext on “Sherlock.” We have the show’s out creator, Mark Gatiss, to thank for it. Gatiss is ditching the undertones for overtones in “Queers,” a new short series commemorating the 50th anniversary of The Sexual Offences Act (sic), which partially decriminalized sex between two men in the U.K. Featuring performances from Britain’s brightest out actors, such as Alan Cumming, Ben Whishaw, and Russell Tovey, each episode is written by a different prominent Lgbt writer. BBC America released a first trailer for the series today, and it’s flecked with all sorts of period costume magic.
According to the BBC, the show is a series of monologues from different figures throughout the fifty years, using inspiration from 1957’s Wolfenden Report, the HIV crisis and the 1967 Sexual Offence Act itself.
