Over the past three decades, sketch comedy group The State has created an MTV series, a comedy album, a book, and a CBS special in addition to several spinoff projects like Reno 911!, Viva Variety, Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, Risk!, and Children’s Hospital. But the logistics of bringing the large troupe back together for a tour were always too daunting to even consider until just a few months ago when the SAG strike cleared off their calendars for the foreseeable future.

After DC Studios finally released a teaser trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, now feels like the perfect time to return to the 2018 original that started it all. A full trailer for the sequel bubbles to the surface on Thursday, September 14, and we’re eager to discover Arthur Curry’s (Jason Momoa) next underwater adventure as we steadily transition to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted Dcu.
Aquaman always seemed to be one of those Superheroes getting clowned on. I mean, it makessense: on the surface, he’s just a man who can swim fast and talk to fish. It’s an easy thing to make
fun of. And because of this public perception, the idea of creating a full-length feature film based on the
character was rarely taken seriously. From Entourage digs to an ever-changing creative landscape, it’s a
miracle that we’re even talking about this film,...

As Reno 911! reaches its 20th anniversary, the cops of the (fortunately fictional) Reno Sheriff’s Department are as inept and ineffectual as ever. Reno 911! premiered on Comedy Central on July 23, 2003, with co-creators Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Robert Ben Garant playing cops alongside Niecy Nash, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and other comedic talents. The mockumentary series aired six seasons on Comedy Central, wrapping up its linear run in 2009. But then it got a revival on Quibi in 2020 and squeezed in a seventh season before that short-form streaming platform shut down. After Quibi’s demise, the eighth season landed on The Roku Channel. Along the way, there’s also been a Reno 911! theatrical release, a Paramount+ movie, and a Comedy Central movie. Kenney-Silver isn’t ruling out future installments, either. “It’s like coming home, I think, for all of us,” she told ScreenRant in December. “It’s like coming home,...

The holidays are sizzlin’ in “Reno 911!: It’s a Wonderful Heist,” a Christmas-themed sequel to the Emmy-nominated “The Hunt for QAnon.” Can the Reno Sheriff’s Department score another bid for Best TV Movie?
Jim Dangle (Thomas Lennon) is bemoaning his rotten luck – and Matt Damon’s Crypto.com ad – when Terry (Nick Swardson) arrives in the form of an angel to show the downtrodden lieutenant what Reno would look like had he never donned his iconic hotpants to patrol its streets. After delivering on the reference to Frank Capra’s 1946 classic, “It’s a Wonderful Heist” “unloads the funniest, weirdest gags that [Kerri Kenney-Silver] and Lennon can devise without resorting to cheap gimmicks, like character development or narrative tension,” writes Matt Schimkowitz (The A.V. Club).

Saturday Night Live is the show everyone thinks of when they think about sketch comedy. Though not the first and certainly not the last, SNL has been on NBC live since 1975. So it has dominated a lot of pop culture real estate. If you are looking for more sketch comedy with a different point of view, or just a different cast, here are 12 other options.

The Second City comedy troupe got into the sketch comedy TV business one year after SNL. Their premise was that the Second City Television network would air different sketches. Comedy legends John Candy, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Andrea Martin, Martin Short and more starred in the show’s five seasons.

“I had been with ‘The Staircase’ on my own going crazy for a very long time. And so it was great to watch other people become obsessed with it, and sort of like poison everybody else in the room and become the thing they can’t stop thinking about. So I really enjoyed that space,” says Antonio Campos about what it’s like to collaborate with other writers compared to writing solo. We talked to Campos along with Sharon Horgan (“Bad Sisters”), Jen Statsky (“Hacks”), Dan Erickson (“Severance”) and Al Yankovic (“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”) as part of our “Meet the Experts” Writers Guild Award nominees panel. Disney+’s Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers has won the 2022 Emmy for outstanding television movie, which was handed out at the second Creative Arts Emmys presentation Sunday night.
“This is not the place I thought we would be, but we don’t get here without many, many people,” said producer Todd Lieberman, who noted that the idea couldn’t have happened “without [the] bizarre and brilliant minds of our writers.” He also noted director Akiva Schaffer.
The hybrid live-action/computer-animated comedy took home the top prize in a category that was likely the biggest wild card of the season, which saw four feature spinoffs of television series — Chip ‘n’ Dale, Ray Donovan: The Movie, Reno 911!: The Hunt for QAnon and Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas — face off against HBO’s somber Holocaust drama The Survivor, which the cabler acquired following its world premiere at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival.

Since Reno 911! was canceled in 2009, following its six-season run on Comedy Central, Robert Ben Garant (who starred in and co-created the series alongside Thomas Lennon and Kerri Kenney-Silver) has always had a feeling the show had a second life. “Reno had been off the air for over 10 years,” says Garant of the effort to find a new home for the Cops spoof, which followed a bumbling crew of deputies in the Nevada city who attempt to uphold law and order — but often create their own disorder. “We edited together a highlight reel and tried to sell it, and everybody passed.”
That is, until Quibi came calling, and Garant and his colleagues realized that the now-shuttered shortform video platform would be the perfect place for the show. “We had one of our editors cut one of the old episodes down to seven minutes,...

The Roku Channel released a trailer on Wednesday morning for “Reno 911″ Defunded,” its upcoming revival series of the long-running “Reno 911!” sitcom.
The trailer shows both new faces and old ones hard at work in the Reno Police Department. A guest star appearance by Jamie Lee Curtis is also revealed, alongside an upcoming Feb. 25 premiere date.
“We’re supposed to be a friendlier face to the city of Reno,” Thomas Lennon’s Lieutenant Jim Dangle informs his precinct, ordering the officers to don a collection of comical hats.

The property was revived on the short-lived streaming platform Quibi in 2020, with installments released in the presumptively novel “quick bite” format of seven-minute episodes. “Reno 911!” is returning to Quibi for another season, the upstart streaming service and Comedy Central Productions announced on Thursday. The decision follows “Reno 911!” earning two Emmy nominations for its 7th season, which debuted on Quibi earlier this year after the comedy had been off TV for more than a decade.
Just as they did last season, co-creators Robert Ben Garant, Thomas Lennon and Kerri Kenney-Silver will continue to write and star in the series.
“We are thrilled about the pick-up, but we’re even more thrilled about getting to leave our living rooms for the first time in 5 months,” the trio said in a statement.
“Reno 911!,” which follows the fictional shenanigans of the Reno Sheriff’s Department, ran for six season on Comedy Central from 2003 to 2009 before its rebirth on Quibi. The show’s latest run recently garnered Emmy nominations for Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama...

The rather incompetent folks at the Reno Sheriff’s Department are coming back for more antics.
Quibi has renewed its revival of “Reno 911!” for a second season, right as the first season on the short form content platform comes to an end.
The revival, which is produced by Comedy Central Productions, recently received a pair of Emmy noms in the short form categories, including an acting nod for co-creator Kerri Kenney-Silver, who plays Deputy Trudy Wiegel. Fellow co-creators Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon will be back to write and star in the new season.
“We are thrilled about the pick-up, but we’re even more thrilled about getting to leave our living rooms for the first time in 5 months,” said all three series co-creators in a statement.
They will be joined once more by Niecy Nash, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Cedric Yarbrough, and Carlos Alazraqui, who all starred in the original series.

After several attempts to revive Reno 911!, Thomas Lennon finally pulled it off, partnering with Quibi for a seventh season and earning his first Emmy nomination, right as he “slipped under and turned 50.”
Created by and starring Lennon, Kerri Kenney and Robert Ben Garant, the Reno-set series is a spoof of law enforcement documentary programs—most notably, the now-canceled Cops. Centered on violent, profane, drug-abusing officers, Reno 911! is a show without a soapbox, but it nonetheless poses a question that Lennon finds to be more relevant than ever in 2020: “Are these people supposed to be cops?”
From the actor and screenwriter’s perspective, the series’ cancellation by Comedy Central in 2009 was oddly premature. Nonetheless, in the new medium of short-form, he’s found that it’s truly come into the height of its powers.

Kerri Kenney-Silver is very matter-of-fact in saying that no one on the cast of “Reno 911!” wanted to stop doing the show when it was cancelled on Comedy Central 11 years ago. “When the idea came around, ‘Hey, let’s maybe do this again,’ everybody jumped for it,” said Kenney-Silver in our recent webchat (watch the video above). She did single out two people who were the biggest cheerleaders of the revival. One was Doug Herzog, who originally bought the pilot for Fox, then again when he moved to Comedy Central and did so once more when he moved over to Quibi. The other was Emmy nominee Niecy Nash. “Every few years, she’d call or text Tom [Lennon] or Ben [Garant] or I and say, ‘Okay, are we gonna do this again? Let’s do this again.’” Nash would also drop hints about a revival during press interviews as well.

During its six-season-and-a-movie Comedy Central run, “Reno 911” was always always known for off-the-cuff comedic riffs, and its new season on Quibi is no exception. But, bringing the law enforcement comedy back more than a decade after originally signing off, and on a digital platform, has allowed the show to take its humor to new, more polished heights. In the third episode of the revival, “T.T.’s Auntie’s Funeral,” the show pays homage to “1917” with a tracking oner that follows the members of the Reno sheriff’s department, a marching band and mourners as they carry a casket out of a funeral home, through road blocks, sprinklers and a construction explosion, to the cemetery.

Reno 911! will soon walk the television beat once again, this time on streaming platform Quibi.
Last December, it was announced that Quibi—a short-form streaming service backed by the coffers of Jeffrey Katzenberg and six major studio investors—will be the platform on which the Reno 911! revival manifests. Indeed, the classification as a “revival” is accurate, since this will be a proper continuation of the popular Cops-parodying mockumentary series, which originally ran on Comedy Central for six seasons (2003-2009). Thus, this is essentially a belated release of Reno 911! Season 7, albeit in a shorter form than we remember.
Original series creators (and main cast members) Thomas Lennon, Robert Ben Garant and Kerri Kenney-Silver return to write and star in the Reno revival. Nobody’s goofin’ about this.
The entire main cast of “Reno 911!” is now confirmed to be returning for the show’s upcoming seventh season at Quibi. It was previously announced that co-creators Robert Ben Garant, Thomas Lennon, and Keri Kenney-Silver would all be back for the show’s seventh season. They will now be joined by Niecy Nash, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Cedric Yarbrough, and Carlos Alazraqui. Ian Roberts, Joe LoTruglio and Mary Birdsong — who joined the show later in its run — will also be featured. Yarbrough and Birdsong were seen alongside Garant, Lennon, and Kenney-Silver in social media posts last week from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department, where filming was taking place.
The original series ran from 2003 to 2009 on Comedy Central. The mockumentary-style show parodied the popular series “Cops” and followed the misadventures of a group of deputies working for the Reno Sheriff’s Department. “Reno 911!” was...

Quibi’s April 6 launch is inching closer, and the mobile short-form streaming service made an aggressive sales pitch Wednesday morning at CES in Las Vegas.
The upcoming platform, created by longtime Hollywood and Silicon Valley power players Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, has raised plenty of eyebrows since its unveiling in 2018, and not just because the streaming service will only work on mobile devices. Episodes of each Quibi series will run under 10 minutes, and the platform, short for “quick bites,” has tapped a dizzying array of high-profile actors, content creators, and major companies to create or invest in the service. Katzenberg and Whitman told CES attendees during a keynote that the service will release roughly 175 series within its first year, which they say would equate to around three hours of new content every day. The service has already attracted $1.4 billion in investments, including from Disney and other studios

Exclusive: The magical menace called Mxyzptlk is returning to National City. Thomas Lennon (The State) is set to recur as the mercurial trickster in the fifth season of the CW’s Supergirl.
Mxyzptlk, aka “Mxy,” is the impish, reality-bending trickster from the 5th Dimension, who previously visited National City to woo Kara Danvers, aka Supergirl, but created chaos in the process. British actor Peter Gadiot portrayed Mxyzptlk for that two-part Season 2 adventure, but the transition to Lennon is smoothed by the character’s handy reputation as a shape-shifter with an unpredictable nature.
Mxyzptlk (it’s pronounced “miks-yez-pit-əl-ik”) has a history of mischief dating back to 1944 in the pages of DC Comics, where the most familiar version of the character is as an eccentric, levitating imp with a purple-and-orange ensemble and matching bowler. Often portrayed as an exasperating pest to Superman, Mxyzptlk is daft but also dangerous given the Kryptonian vulnerability to magic.
