Sometimes, the movies slated for the 2012 year are only as good as their hype. A few of these flicks only look good as a trailer, but when audiences hit the theatre, either all the best parts have been given away or expectations fall flat. Not every title bears merit, but if any blood money is to be spilt, here’s a list of curios that should really be investigated.
Beneath the Darkness (Release Date: Jan 6)
Dir.: Martin Guigui.
Cast: Dennis Quaid, Tony Oller and Aimee Teegarden.
When a group of teens witness their best friend murdered by a so-called hero, they have to figure out how to expose him and avoid being killed too. Dennis Quaid plays Ely Vaughn, the pillar of the community, but also the antagonist in this film. Interestingly enough, Vaughn is the town’s local mortician, and there’s a secret that no body knows about him.

Francis Ford Coppola's new mystery thriller 'Twixt' isn't exactly sounding like a particularly exciting prospect. It's one of the many projects that either features a version of the classic American poet Edgar Allan Poe or is at least based upon his past works. Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Elle Fanning, Joanne Whalley, David Paymer, Alden Ehrenreich, Anthony Fusco, Don Novello and Ryan Simpkins all star in Coppola's new movie. Poe in this feature is portrayed by British actor Ben Chaplin ('Lost Souls', 'Dorian Gray'). The Kino Gallery have revealed a new international one-sheet from the movie as we wait with bated breathe at the prospect of a general release, or at best a direct to DVD announcement. Check out the new poster below....

After a stellar career directing some of cinema’s greats—The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, The Conversation—you can’t blame Francis Ford Coppola for deciding to film smaller passion projects in his twilight. After the self-financed Tetro and Youth Without Youth, he returns with a story from an unusual origin. With an alcohol-induced dream in Istanbul, a vivid conversation with Edgar Allen Poe while a murder mystery happens as a backdrop, the impetus behind Twixt was born. Awoken before its end, Coppola scribbled down what he could remember and wrote a short story to convert into his script. Utilizing the parallel between Poe’s tragic loss of his young wife/cousin and the equally devastating accident that claimed Coppola’s son, the theme coming through the art is a wonderfully bittersweet idea that our loved ones get buried in our work. I admire the ability to allow his newest piece...
