MILAN -- The 70th edition of MIFED, almost certainly the last in its current form, got underway Sunday with a healthy turnout, several packed screenings and a flurry of early dealmaking. Organizers claimed that the Saturday night premarket screenings had been a big success, with 42 movies unspooling and buyer numbering significantly greater than last year. Berenice Fugard, head of acquisitions for Pathe Distribution, the U.K. distribution arm owned and run by French giant Pathe Entertainment, said there were more people than she expected attending the premarket screenings. "But the screening rooms are still atrocious in the Fiera," she said. The perennial complaints about the Fiera di Milano exhibition halls, home to the market, had not been quelled by pledges of widespread improvements from the organizers.
