Ever since the Marvel Cinematic Universe kicked off with 2008's "Iron Man," fans around the world have delighted at seeing some of their favorite comic book characters share the screen with one another in an ever-expanding world. For the most part, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige and the countless writers, directors, actors, and others who've helped shape the MCU have delivered wildly entertaining shows and movies while also staying true to what made the source material so captivating. From classic plotlines to iconic panels to lesser-known characters, the McU's creators have done a stellar job of transposing some of the most beloved elements from the comic books to both the big and small screen.
Still, because of how different comics are from television and film, numerous changes have been made to adapt these larger-than-life characters to a live action medium. Some of these decisions make sense; what may work on...

Quantum of Solace is one of the most divisive movies in the James Bond franchise. The contentious Bond entry was intended to be a direct sequel to 2006’s Casino Royale, successfully launching Daniel Craig as the new 007. Still, in a rush to get it into theaters within two years of that movie, the budget ballooned to make it the costliest film in the series up to that point. It didn’t help that it was filmed during a writer’s strike (history repeats itself) and had a director in Marc Forster, who had never made a film of this scale before. When it came out, the short length (106 minutes) and Bourne-style action scenes were criticized, with many saying the film was a mind-numbing mess. Plus, there was a wimpy villain, a Bond girl with no romantic relationship with 007, and a theme song people mostly hated.
Despite the film’s failure...

When a character is already pre-established, it can be tricky to find a way to slip into their shoes comfortably. There's the weight of fan expectation, after all. The comic book fandom was nowhere near as overwhelming back in the early 2000s as it is now. But back when Keanu Reeves was cast as John Constantine in "Constantine," it was a surprise.
For one, visually, he was the opposite of what you'd expect from a character visually inspired by Sting. Secondly, the character of John Constantine came straight out of Liverpool. Dripping in cynicism, cigarette smoke, and an irreplaceable cunning, John Constantine was a character that seemed outside of Reeves' acting scope. But Constantine isn't wholly bad.
Mind you, playing someone with good in their heart wasn't anything new for Reeves. The role of Ted in the "Bill & Ted" franchise solidified him as the stoner with a heart of...

Bucking the trends for ’80s crime films, Neil Jordan’s tale of a low-rung hood attached to a ‘complicated’ call girl becomes a love story about meaningful relationships. Sort of the ‘anti- Travis Bickle,’ Bob Hoskins’ low-class mug discovers emotions and an ability to commit that could even be called Chivalric. Michael Caine chills as an all-too real villain, the boss that doesn’t think Hoskins worthy of a straight answer. Topping it off, cinematographer Roger Pratt makes this possibly the best-looking British crime film in color.

Fans were excited when Tony Stark unveiled an upgraded Spider-Man suit to his protege Peter Parker at the end of Homecoming. Though a fresh design, its origins suggested that this was the McU version of the Iron Spider costume that Iron Man creates for Parker in the comics. Sure enough, when Tom Holland’s wall-crawler donned the outfit in Avengers: Infinity War, it proved to come with the same extra gadgets the Iron Spider did – most noticeably, the retractable legs.
The McU Iron Spider suit retains the web-slinger’s classic color scheme of red and blue, with an echo of the comic version in its gold detailing. But what it would look like if Marvel Studios had faithfully recreated the Iron Spider from the page? Well, one fan has imagined that and redesigned the suit with the blue removed and the gold coloring increased.
Check it out down below:

Some new information has surfaced regarding the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and it involves Spider-Man's costume. Apparently there are some big changes coming to it and it hints at what we might expect to see from the film.
Even though Spider-Man bit the dust in Avengers: Infinity War, we all know that he's coming back. There was talk of the film taking place prior to the events of Infinity War, but that is becoming less and less likely.
The following information comes from Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man and The Wasp costume designer Louise Frogley. He tells IndiaWest:
"I am not actually working on that film, but the costumes will have very big changes because, in the film, Spider-Man becomes more like a man and not a teenager."
The fact that she says Spider-Man will be more like a man, tells us that some years will have passed following the events of the Avengers films.

Though his fate is still up in the air thanks to Avengers: Infinity War, we’re now hearing that Peter Parker will be sporting a new suit for Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 as the Web-Head adjusts to adulthood.
Word comes by way of IndiaWest (h/t ComicBook.com), who spoke to Marvel costume designer Louise Frogley about her latest McU gig, Ant-Man and the Wasp. It wasn’t long before the conversation veered toward Phase 4 though and Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, in particular, at which point Frogley hinted that the costumes of Jon Watts’ Spidey sequel will be totally different from previous incarnations, as Peter Parker begins to make his transition from teenager to man.

Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" follows the struggle between light and dark inside Olympic athlete-turned-bombardier Louis Zamperini (Jack O'Connell). We watch him learn to fight through to find spiritual transcendence. His extraordinary true-life survival story is a study in contrast -- harrowing yet beautiful -- which sophomore director Jolie wanted to emphasize visually, sonically, and musically. After speaking with cinematographer Roger Deakins, I grabbed more of the behind-the-scenes crafts story from production designer Jon Hutman, costume designer Louise Frogley, supervising sound editor Becky Sullivan, editors Tim Squyres and Billy Goldenberg, and composer Alexandre Desplat. Point-of-view is key. "My goal is to make the place look the way it feels to Louis," says Hutman. "For example, when he lands at Kwajalein after 47 days in a raft, there are two things that are emotionally important: One is strangeness, foreignness, the most...

Beverly Hills — Angelina Jolie is making movies. A lot of movies. On Sunday afternoon the Oscar winner sat down for a Q&A to discuss the first of three films she's had in the works, "Unbroken," the long-awaited biopic of Louis Zamperini. An Olympic athlete at the1936 Summer Games in Berlin, Zamperini's life took a dramatic turn when he enlisted in the Air Force during WWII and had a life-changing experience that found him adrift at sea for over 47 days and subsequently interned for over two years in a Japanese Pow camp. Zamperini tried to get his story on the big screen for decades, but it didn't come to pass until Laura Hillenbrand wrote "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption" in 2010 and, eventually, Jolie decided to direct. What Jolie didn't realize when she was considering the project was that Zamperini was actually her neighbor.

"Clothes don't make the man?" That rule certainly doesn't hold true in the movies. Dress can say a lot about characters, their class, their self-image, their self-consciousness, the period and place in which they live, the story they're living and how a director wishes an audience to perceive them. Fortunately, the Academy's Costume Design branch recognizes this, as it consistently proves itself to be one of the most original sects of the organization, not overtly swayed by a film's overall perception. Every year, films that are critically maligned and/or have no other nominations tend to score here and the overall state of the Best Picture race tends to play only a peripheral role. Nevertheless, trends can be noted. Period pieces almost always take a majority of the nominations, frequently all five. Glamor is also awarded frequently. There are also great designers (such as Sandy Powell, Milena Canonero and Colleen Atwood...

What a busy twelve months it’s been for costume design. Really though, this art, or craft, or business (Deborah Nadoolman Landis insists it is definitely a business) gets more talked about each year. 2013 was especially exciting however as it seemed every month something even more thrilling arrived to fawn over. In the last few weeks alone we have had The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Sleepy Hollow, and now American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street on the horizon. Dipping back further, it was Stoker that got us excited about subtext, The Great Gatsby that slammed the lid on that twenties revival once and for all, and Behind the Candelabra that put Michael Douglas in a 16ft fox fur cape and white brocade jumpsuit.

A-listers and Oscar winners star in this second trailer for The Monuments Men.
Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by Fdr with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.
A vast improvement over the original teaser trailer. Will the film be among the Best Picture nominees in the upcoming Oscar race? We’ll find out when the nominations are announced on Thursday, January 16, 2014.
However this year’s Award Season pans out, The Monuments Men, along with it’s star-studded cast, is akin to the old-Hollywood WWII movies The Dirty Dozen, Guns Of Navarone, and The Longest Day – all of which were big commercial successes and Academy Award winners.

In theaters on December 18, here’s the first trailer for George Clooney’s The Monuments Men.
Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is a dramatic thriller focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by Fdr with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.
It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.

Whether or not you think Catherine Martin has already won this year's Costume Design Oscar - paging pink-suited Jay Gatsby! -- the upcoming battle for Oscar nominations is hardly an easy read even if there are only four spots to sashay towards in your suit & gown finery. Costume Design is my favorite Oscar race outside of all the Actressing, not frequently for what the Academy chooses but for the breadth and depth of the competitive field each year. Here's a few questions I'm already asking myself and by extension, you. So join me in the sartorial contemplation...
Steven Noble's work on "Two Faces of January" looks just divine in stills. How's the film?
This far ahead of the nominations (only 242 days to go!) it's anyone's guess and anyone's game.
Which frequently forgotten designer will finally get the red carpet welcoming committee?
The possible answers are plentiful so let's talk four of them.

He retreats inside the Iron Man suit, now up to an almost unfathomably expensive Mark 42, because it is the only place he feels safe. Iron Man 3 mocks the notion of re-invention; Stark can build all the iron suits he wants, they will save him from just about any foe. But take the mask off and he is just as soft, weak and fallible as those he strives to save.

Wamg recently attended the Flight press conference held at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills. The great thing about press conferences is that you really get a nice glimpse into the creative effort that goes into any given film. For Flight, we got to hear director Robert Zemeckis, screenwriter John Gatins, star Denzel Washington, and other cast members talk about their various approaches and experiences with Flight.
For Zemeckis, Flight marks the return to live-action filmmaking. The innovative director has spent the past decade directing and producing films that utilize motion capture technology and indeed Zemeckis has long been on the forefront of special and visual effects technology in films. However, strong characters with compelling emotional journeys anchor all of his films, including Flight.
Gatins extensively researched real-life air disasters. At that time, the legendary Us Airways .Miracle on the Hudson. river landing accomplished by heroic pilot Sully Sullenberger, was still ten years away.

New Iron Man 3 set photos have been making the rounds that hint at the next major supervillain. The image above from io9 shows a signe for Advanced Idea Mechanics (aka Aim). If you are familiar with the comics, this is the terrorist organization that created Modok, aka Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing. The character (shown below) has a vast intelligence and an enormous square head. For more set photos visit the gallery at io9.

As we all know, The Avengers has taken the box office by storm over the past six weeks, becoming the first movie of 2012 to take a billion dollars. With the money still rolling in, Marvel – as ever keeping an eye on the future – officially announced today that principal photography has started for Iron Man 3, due out in May, 2013 – just eleven more months before Tony Stark returns to the big screen.
A few grainy set photos have been surfacing in the past week online, as well as shots of Robert Downey, Jr. arriving on set, but now a brilliant official photo has been released in tandem with the official announcement – presumably that suggests the photos so far may not have been part of principal photography.
Shane Black, Downey, Jr.’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang writer-director, is taking over from Jon Favreau behind the camera, co-writing the script with Drew Pearce...

Even though filming for Marvel's upcoming Iron Man 3 started a couple weeks ago, the studio has now released the official press statement for the start of production and have included the first official picture from the set of the film.
Leaks from the set of Iron Man 3 have already been coming in, so I found it kind of funny this morning when I got a press release from Marvel announcing the start of production. Oh well, it's got some information on the cast, and includes the first 'official' image from the set.
That's a whole lot of Iron Man suits in the background there. Obviously this is Stark's basement and looks much like it has in the previous films. While it's nothing new, for Marvel fans looking forward to Iron Man's next outing it's pretty exciting. The full release is below:

By no means intended as an exhaustive list, Clothes on Film ponder an overview of 2011 in costume. Concentrating on mainstream fare that those outside of big cities are likely to have seen, we consider which costumes delighted, surprised and best of all, enlightened us. Expect to spot Drive, Melancholia and Hugo on this list somewhere.
Costume encompasses every item of clothing worn on film. By strict definition costume is not ‘wardrobe’; wardrobe is what Oprah Winfrey wore on her talk show. While at Clothes on Film we embrace all forms of costume, we do have a slight bias for contemporary, although only because it is often underrepresented in the face of (admittedly dazzling) period or fantasy wear. This roundup will comprise both period and contemporary, but...

How Ryan Gosling, George Clooney and Philip Seymour Hoffman mastered the art of the understated suit
My browser history was cleared of all traces of "F*ck Yeah! Ryan Gosling". Various synonyms for 'silver fox' were banished from all talk of George Clooney. The curious soft spot I hold for Philip Seymour Hoffman was set aside. I was prepared to objectively analyse The Ides of March - a film full of, to quote Derek Zoolander, "really, really, ridiculously good looking" people.
But no sooner had the three men sashayed onto screen than my jaw fell agape and my eyes glazed over dreamily. Why? It was the suits.
The Savile Row tailor Hardy Amies once said that, "A man should look as if he had bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care, then forgotten all about them." It's a maxim that epitomises great heritage labels like Brooks Brothers,...

The Film:
On April 14, 1865 President Abraham Lincoln was watching a play with his wife when John Wilkes Booth assassinated him. Growing up, everyone is taught this in history class. What many don’t learn about is the trial of the people that were arrested for conspiring to assassinate him. One of those people was a mother of two, 42 year old Mary Surratt. She owned the home where the group, including her son, John, and Booth had met to conspire on the assassination, or going by what Mary says, the kidnapping of the President. Since John had run and was not caught, the lawyers had decided to arrest Mary and bring her up on charges. If found guilty, she would be the first woman ever to be executed in the United States. There was only one thing standing between freedom and death for Mary, her lawyer, Fredrick Aiken. Fredrick was a...

Warner Bros. Pictures has released a slew of new images from the upcoming thriller Contagion. The photo gallery includes a few behind-the-scenes stills as well as a look at Steven Soderbergh’s film.
An international traveler reaches into the snack bowl at an airport bar before passing her credit card to a waiter. A business meeting begins with a round of handshakes. A man coughs on a crowded bus…
One contact. One instant. And a lethal virus is transmitted.
When Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow) returns to Minneapolis from business in Hong Kong, what she thought was jet lag takes a virulent turn. Two days later, she’s dead in the ER and the doctors tell her shocked and grieving husband (Matt Damon) they have no idea why.
Soon, others exhibit the same mysterious symptoms: hacking coughs and fever, followed by seizure, brain hemorrhage…and ultimately, death. In Minneapolis, Chicago, London,...

Steven Soderbergh is about to unleash his virus thriller Contagion in just a few weeks and Warner Bros. have released 70 high-resolution images from the film. If you looked close enough at each one, I’m confident you could tell who lives and who dies. Spoiler warning: the prospects aren’t looking too good. Screenings kicked off last night in Los Angeles and I’ve heard strong things (with a tweet or two that skirt the embargo), but for now we have these photos, which can be seen below.
Contagion stars Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Elliott Gould, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, John Hawkes and Jennifer Ehle. See the trailer here and click the images below for high-resolution.

Shocking, but not really considering all the legal wrangling going on with the franchise recently, James Bond 23 has been shelved “indefinitely”. Not good news for any of us who enjoy gawping at the man’s enviable wardrobe.
Without getting lost in our dusty legal dictionary, it appears that the main problem lies with Bond’s financial backers MGM. Having put themselves up for sale late last year, the company’s shareholders are currently in the process of arguing to accept the best offer (i.e. take the money and run) or hold out in hopes of keeping the studio afloat. In other words, they’re in limbo.
Bond’s producers Eon, as headed by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, have put forward the following statement, effectively saying the world’s foremost super spy is, for the moment anyway, dead:

The April Fool Oscar predictions are coming right along. I call them April Fool not because I'm joking but because who the hell knows. It's a foolish practice. Yet foolish can be fun. If you're curious about how well I do before any of the films are seen you can see the past year scores below the predictions. I do pretty well just by imagining what might come to pass. Everyone is good at predicting right before the Oscars (we've seen months of winnowing down and precursors to study) but it's a much tougher game before you even fully know the players.

As of right now, I have a list of 72 individual films that could potentially go on to become 2011 Oscar nominees. If you take into consideration the additional films I currently have listed as animated and documentary contenders the list grows to 85 films. As a result I am going to break up this preliminary list of Oscar contenders into four articles and on the fifth day, this coming Friday, I will publish the list in its entirety. I felt it would be easier to digest everything this way as opposed to offering one massive list you probably wouldn't be able to look over all at once.

James Bond bosses are worried star Daniel Craig is losing too much weight on the set of the new 007 movie.
The actor worked out furiously to get in shape for his role as the world's most famous spy - but now the movie is shooting, he is giving wardrobe workers daily headaches, because his weight is plummeting.
Costumer designer Louise Frogley reveals, "I tell you what, his waist is going like that (shrinking). We keep having to take his trousers in."...

Tossing its hat into the ongoing onslaught of nominations, the Costume Designers Guild on Wednesday announced the nominees for its eighth annual Costume Designers Guild Awards. In the period film category, the designers' taste ranged from Japanese kimonos from the 1930s to thrift store ware from New York's Lower East Side circa the 1980s as they nominated Kasia Walicka-Maimone for Capote, Louise Frogley for Good Night, and Good Luck, Colleen Atwood for Memoirs of a Geisha, Arianne Phillips for Walk the Line and Aggie Guerard Rodgers for Rent. Atwood, an Oscar winner for Chicago, also has been chosen to receive the group's Lacoste Spotlight in Film Award. Other special honorees, who will be recognized at an awards gala Feb. 25 at the Beverly Hilton, include Thomas C. Short, president of IATSE, who is to receive the Swarovski President's Award, and Star Trek designer Robert Blackman, who will get the Spotlight in Television Award. Anna Hill Johnstone will be inducted into the Edith Head Hall of Fame, and the guild will present Michael Woulfe, Grady Hunt and Moss Mabry with a Gold Card for their years of service to the guild, IATSE Local 892.

Constantine, based on characters populating the DC Comics/Vertigo Hellblazer graphic novels, is one of those rare pulpy page-to-screen translations that actually gets it right.
An engrossing mix of atmospheric gothic horror and smart sci-fi that's cemented by intriguing mythology, terrific visual effects, a dry sense of humor and an ideally cast Keanu Reeves, the picture officially heralds the end of the New Year release doldrums.
Appreciative audiences should mark the occasion by creating a sizable boxoffice splash for the Warner Bros. Pictures release. Although it's probably too dark to reach the heights of an X-Men or Spider-Man, international business should be equally impressive, making a sequel definitely within the realm of possibility.
Unlike so many other first-time feature directors who made their name helming music videos, Francis Lawrence -- who created eye-catching clips for Justin Timberlake, Janet Jackson and Will Smith, among others -- hasn't opted for a flashy visual style at the expense of story and character.
He quickly gets down to the business of immersing the viewer in Constantine's intriguing environment -- one in which the otherworldly manifestations of heaven and hell are on the verge of being thrown out of their precarious balance right here on Earth.
Specifically speaking, that would be Los Angeles, where Reeves' John Constantine spends his tortured days and nights ensuring that balance isn't knocked out of kilter through less-than-divine intervention.
For the uninitiated, Constantine has been cursed with the lifelong ability to see the true demonic or beatific faces of the "half-breeds" living among us -- intermediaries who have been sent back to Earth to do the bidding of their respective commanders in chief.
An expert in demonology, Constantine has been keeping busy dispatching a disturbing influx of evil half-breeds back to hell, but his intentions are far from being heroic.
Recently diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, the chain-smoking anti-hero is really just in it for himself, hoping that with all that satanic butt-kicking, he might be able to buy his way into heaven.
But his strategy is complicated with the arrival of Angela Dodson (the always welcome Rachel Weisz), a stoical police detective whose sister has committed what appears to be suicide.
There's actually, refreshingly, a lot more plot to go around thanks to clever writing officially credited to Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello, but there's the sense that producer Akiva Goldsman also made some contributions to the script, which is filled with great characters.
Among them is Tilda Swinton's gender-blurring Gabriel, Peter Stormare's self-styled Satan (in a white suit), Gavin Rossdale's slick Balthazar and Djimon Hounsou's noncommittal Midnite, whose offbeat nightclub serves as a neutral meeting ground for half-breeds of both persuasions.
But it's Reeves who, outfitted with an economy of dialogue and costume designer Louise Frogley's sleek monochromatic apparel, gets the requisite film noir look and attitude down cold.
He and Weisz, who once again projects a beguiling combination of beauty and intelligence, make for a classically cynical graphic novel couple.
Working in perfect harmony with Lawrence's organic direction, the writing and performances are the technical contributions, particularly those of cinematographer Philippe Rousselot (Big Fish), production designer Naomi Shohan (Training Day) and visual effects supervisor Michael Fink (the X-Men movies), who succeed in turning downtown Los Angeles into a convincingly hellish Hades on Earth.
