After nine years working with newspapers, he joined the BBC Radio 4 "Today" program in 1969. He reported from Northern Ireland for four years during the Troubles. He was also posted to Vietnam, Australia, and Japan. He moved to the United States as the New York correspondent for "Breakfast Time".
