The Library of Congress has announced this year’s selection of 25 “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” pieces of recorded music to archive into the National Recording Registry, led by albums from Green Day, The Notorious B.I.G., and Blondie.
In addition to Green Day’s seminal Dookie, The Notorious B.I.G.’s classic debut Ready to Die, and Blondie’s commercial breakthrough Parallel Lines, other albums preserved among “the defining sounds of history” include Abba’s Arrival and The Chicks’ Wide Open Spaces. Jefferson Airplane’s Surrealistic Pillow and The Cars’ self-titled debut also made the list.
Songs include Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick’s “LA-di-Da-Di,” Perry Como’s “Catch a Falling Star,” Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” and Gene Autry’s “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” See the full list below and take a look at the Library of Congress’ full registry here.

Works from Perry Como to The Cars were added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry, which designates recordings worthy of preservation “based on their cultural, historical or aesthetic importance in the nation’s recorded sound heritage.”
Among the 25 selected this year are Abba’s “Dancing Queen,” Blondie’s “Parallel Lines,” The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Ready to Die,” Green Day’s “Dookie” and The Chicks’ “Wide Open Spaces.” Also on the list are Lily Tomlin’s comedy recordings, and much older titles like Gene Autry’s “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are” and Como’s “Catch a Falling Star” / “Magic Moments.” The Cars’ debut album is on the list as well as Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” Some of the titles added date to 1919, with the entry of the all-Black 369th U.S. Infantry Band led by James Reese Europe.

Other than making records, what do Green Day, the Notorious B.I.G., classic crooners Perry Como and Johnny Mathis, Latin music giant Héctor Lavoe, and the late Bill Withers have in common? Not much, until today: Works by all those musicians, and over a dozen more, were announced as the latest additions to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.

SXSW 2024 kicked off its first full day of music on March 12 with a smattering of must-see shows around town, plus some tension in the air thanks to the festival’s relationship with the U.S. Army. (When Texas Gov. Greg Abbott chimed in on social media, it was the kind of noise that no one needs.) While a number of acts cancelled their official showcases, many of them continued to play unofficial shows for the audiences that SXSW brought to town, and several spoke out in support of the Palestinian people and against war.

From humble beginnings in Hollis, Queens, to the world stage of Live Aid, it has been more than 40 years since Run-dmc first changed hip-hop forever. Now Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons, Darryl “Dmc” McDaniels, and Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell are having their story told through a new three-part documentary series Kings From Queens: The Run Dmc Story. It premieres February 1 on Peacock. Titans of music across genres including Ice Cube, LL Cool J, Questlove, Beastie Boys, Ice-t, Chuck D, Tom Morello, Salt, Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Mc Lyte, and Ed Love speak about how the group inspired generations. And how they impacted the cultural landscape of the business with their unique and catchy sound. Some of the biggest triumphs such as taking hip-hop mainstream thanks to “Walk This Way” with Aerosmith are chronicled. With those proud touchtones also comes immense tragedy. Among them at the top was Jay...

Ok, let's be honest - did we really expect the MTV VMAs, of all award shows, to deliver the best hip-hop 50 tribute of the year? The "all-star finale performance" MTV touted ahead of the Sept. 12 event included Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, LL Cool J, Dmc (of Run-d.M.C.), Doug E. Fresh, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five as performers. The 10-minute tribute intended to honor the culture's entire 50-year history, but with a lineup that shallow (and New York-skewed), is that even possible?
The VMAs aren't alone: it seems every award show's hip-hop 50 tribute has missed the mark this year. The Grammys kicked off the milestone celebration in February with an old school-meets-new-school performance, which featured everyone from Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, and De La Soul to Lil Baby, GloRilla, and Lil Uzi Vert. The BET Awards followed suit in June with a "non-stop party" of medley performances from folks like Warren G,...

Hip-hop 50th anniversary celebrations are still underway, and some of the culture's most formative architects and torchbearers hit the stage at the 2023 MTV VMAs to honor it. At last year’s MTV Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift announced her Midnights album. And this year, the album helped her dominate the night with multiple wins, including her fourth for video of the year.
Swift is the only artist to win the top prize four times — this year it was for her No. 1 hit “Anti-Hero.” During the win that closed out the four-hour show Tuesday night, she shared the stage with those who worked on the music video: director of photography Rina Yang and editor Chancler Haynes.
Swift opened and closed the show with honors: She fangirled, like most of the audience, when she accepted the first award of the night from ‘N Sync, who earned a standing ovation from the crowd at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
“I am not doing well pivoting from this to this. I had your dolls. Are you doing something? What’s going to happen now?...

The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards did not disappoint in terms of solid, energetic performances as well as chaos that fit the brand of the award show. From Sabrina Carpenter’s opening performance and raunchy improvisation at the end of “Nonsense,” to Taylor Swift fangirling over the Nsync Reunion, pop culture fed itself many times over Tuesday night. In addition to serving as the emcee for the 2023 VMAs, Nicki Minaj performed during the awards show, even treating fans to a preview of a new song at the end of her solo performance of “Last Time I Saw You.”
Minaj initially took the stage at the top of Tuesday night’s 2023 MTV Video Music Awards wearing a light pink bridal ensemble, veil and all, where she urged the audience to applaud and cheer for the performers who kicked off the show, Lil Wayne and Olivia Rodrigo.

Nicki Minaj took a break from hosting the 2023 MTV VMAs to perform her new song “Last Time I Saw You.” Watch her rendition of the track below.
In a surprisingly low-key performance for the rapper, Nicki mostly stood still at the mic to sing “Last Time I Saw You,” which has a delicate guitar line and lyrics like, “I’ll always adore you” — offering a complete tonal shift from recent tracks like “Super Freaky Girl.” Soon enough, however, Minaj shed her fluffy black gown and offered Barbz a “Pink Friday 2 exclusive,” rapping a much heavier, unreleased new song.
Minaj won Best Hip-Hop for “Super Freaky Girl” at the 2023 VMAs. This year marks the artist’s second turn as VMAs host; last year, she performed a career-spanning medley after receiving the Video Vanguard Award.

There was a cipher going on outside the Hip-Hop 50 Live show at Yankee Stadium. One woman took the mic, intently closing her eyes while focusing on her next bar. As I walked away, she rhymed an improvisational derivative of recuperate, before spitting “that’s not even a word, I just be sayin’ shit.” The line set an apropos tone for the day. Hip-hop was bore out of rule-shirking and boundless imagination — and it made its way to “the house that Ruth built” to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Returning to hip-hop’s birthplace, classic rappers who pioneered the sound — as well as those who have proudly carried the rap torch — joined forces to honor the genre’s 50th birthday and celebrate its historic and global impact on pop culture.
It was only fitting that a venue as iconic as Bronx’s Yankee Stadium became the home for the eight-hour celebration, which included three dozen performers and nearly 50,000 audience members.
The universal love for rap was at the center of the night, and rappers like Nas and Snoop Dogg owned the night while also honoring those who came before them.
During his set, Nas brought out hip-hop founding father DJ Kool Herc and told the crowd: “This is our love. This is our bloodline.” Herc, 68, earned a standing ovation and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Kool G Rap also appeared onstage alongside Nas,...

Ja Rule, Red Man, E-40, Master P, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Styles P, T.I., Fabolous, Trick Daddy, Trina, Uncle Luke and Skillz hit the stage, helping the four-hour-show flow during the writers strike, which several presenters acknowledged before giving out awards, including Grammy-winning singer Muni Long.
“Let’s take a moment to acknowledge and stand in solidarity with the artists who make us laugh, cry and, most important, think — our Writers Guild of America family.
