Steven Lutvak, the composer and co-lyricist of the hit Tony-winning 2013 Broadway musical comedy A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, died October 9. He was 64.
His death was confirmed by his agent, Olivier Sultan. A cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
“Steven was one of the warmest, kindest, loveliest persons I know,” Sultan said in a statement. “Completely original, completely himself.”
Born in the Bronx on July 18, 1959, Lutvak enjoyed a musical career that included cabaret performance, songwriting, coaching, musical arrangment and two albums The Time It Take and Ahead of My Heart, but had his most significant breakthrough with the 2013 Broadway production of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. The production ran for more than two years, won the Tony Award for Best Musical and earned Tony nominations for its three stars Bryce Pinkham, Jefferson Mays and Lauren Worsham.

The first new musical of 2019-2020 Broadway season, “Moulin Rouge!,” is a sumptuous stage adaptation of Baz Lurhman’s film and the “spectacular spectacular” production will draw in crowds like moths to a flame. The tuner is bound to scoop up a slew of Tony nominations next April, but Original Score won’t be among them. Every Best Musical winner since 2013 has claimed the Original Score trophy, but jukebox musicals like this one aren’t eligible for that prize.
“Moulin Rouge!,” which incorporates a parade of pop hits, is not alone in its use of pre-existing music this season. Every new musical coming to Broadway this year uses familiar tunes. “Girl From the North Country” is a Depression era tale told through the music of Bob Dylan; “Jagged Little Pill” uses the songs of Alanis Morissette to chronicle inner pain; and “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” pulls from the Queen...

With 16 musicals and 23 plays opening on Broadway in the 2013-2014 season, the 68th Annual Tony Awards was one of the most prosperous and reassuring in recent theater history. Not to mention, as Tony presenter Judith Light announced, “We’ve just seen the highest-grossing, best-attended Memorial Day week” ever. It’s a good time to be in the business. “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” proved this year’s dark horse. A show 11 years in the making, the musical comedy was a bit slow out of the gate this past fall but ultimately galloped off with four Tony wins, including best costume design of a musical to Linda Cho, best book of a musical to Robert L. Will Neil Patrick Harris claim his first Tony Award this Sunday for his gender-bending turn in the musical revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch? Probably. Will fellow multiple-Emmy winner Bryan Cranston win for playing Lyndon B. Johnson in the biodrama All the Way? Count on it. But will it be the Carole King biomusical Beautiful or the murderously funny A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder that earns top honors as the Best New Musical of the Broadway season?
On that point, as on many other tight races in this year’s Tony contest, EW critics Melissa Rose Bernardo and Thom Geier are divided.

New York (AP) — The musical "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder," a comedic romp in which a poor man eliminates the eight heirs ahead of him for a title, nabbed a leading 10 Tony Award nominations on Tuesday. Nominations were spread out for most other shows, reflecting the lack of a juggernaut this year. "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," a cult off-Broadway hit about a transgender East German performer, stars Neil Patrick Harris and won eight nominations, while "After Midnight," a musical celebrating Duke Ellington's years at the Cotton Club nightclub, got seven, tied with "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" and a British revival of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night." Bryan Cranston won a nod for playing Lyndon Johnson in "All the Way," and Woody Allen got one for turning his film "Bullets Over Broadway" into a musical. The nominations also made waves for snubbing some big names, including Denzel Washington,...

The company has pushed back on a lawsuit that claimsViacom chairman Sumner Redstone, CEO Philippe Dauman, COO Thomas Dooley and other board members were overpaid by $36.6 million. “Defendants respectfully request that the Court dismiss the Complaint with prejudice,” said Viacom’s lawyers in a memorandum (read it here) accompanying the motion filed yesterday in Delaware. “Viacom and the Director Defendants (together, the “Defendants”) bring this motion …on the grounds that no demand was made on the Board to bring suit and the Complaint does not adequately allege demand on the Board would be futile and hence excused.” The company also says that shareholder Robert Freedman has not shown in his suit that the board isn’t independent and didn’t make the payout based on evaluated performance of the compensated executives. Freedman filed his initial complaint August 17. He wants the executives to repay the $36,645.750 they received plus his legal fees.
