What is it like to juggle the bright lights of stardom with the beautiful chaos of family life? Hugh Grant, in a conversation with The Undoing co-star Nicole Kidman, once shared a more intimate view of this very balance—or, sometimes, the lack thereof.
The Maurice actor, 63, has to stay away from his beloved kids in London, whom he once described to People as “the nicest thing that has ever happened to me”, while filming David E. Kelley’s HBO thriller series in New York City. Despite the enticing opportunity for five months during the 2019 production, Grant quickly realized that distance did not make his heart grow fonder, but rather, accentuated a profound sense of missing out.

The Hamilton cast already has a trophy case full of Tonys — but could one of the leading men add an Emmy this year, as well?
Two of the Broadway smash’s male stars are in the running for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, thanks to Disney+’s filmed stage version. Lin-Manuel Miranda is nominated for his starring turn as founding father Alexander Hamilton (it’s his sixth Emmy nomination overall, with one win so far), and his costar/onstage nemesis Leslie Odom Jr. is also up for playing Aaron Burr. HBO’s The Undoing may have been a limited series, but it doesn’t mean star Hugh Grant hasn’t been thinking about his character Jonathan Fraser and what he would be up to now.
“I worry about him. I’m afraid he’s in prison,” Grant said during the series’ panel at Deadline’s Contender Television: The Nominees awards-season event, where he was joined by the series’ production designer Lester Cohen. Both are Emmy-nominated for the twisty crime drama thriller.
“I do wonder what he’s doing? Grant continued. “He’s always determined to stay on top of everything. He’s been a wunderkind all his life, a high achiever. He wants all eyes on him. I imagine he’s quite high up in the prison hierarchy. Is he organizing an escape? Could that be the beginning of a second series? I don’t know because from Jonathan’s point of view,...

Television has always been about relationships — those depicted on screen and the ones between the series and the viewers. As characters debate whether to trust one another before venturing into whatever premise the plot sets forth, those watching at home have to decide if it’s worth their time to follow such journeys.
So, it’s fitting that several of this year’s Emmy-contending lead actors play characters who are either deciding if they can trust their spouses or are trying to convince their partners that they are good people.
Paul Bettany’s vibranium-made synthezoid from Disney Plus’ “WandaVision,” Regé-Jean Page’s Duke of Hastings on Netflix’s “Bridgerton,” Josh O’Connor’s depiction of Prince Charles from Netflix’s “The Crown” and Hugh Grant’s scheming Dr. Jonathan Fraser from HBO’s “The Undoing” all have crises of faith about whether they can either trust their wives or get those women to trust them.

With television production slowed over the past year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there were significantly fewer shows and performers submitted for the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards. This means, due to the Television Academy’s sliding scale, some of the acting races have drastically different numbers of nominees on the final-round ballot.
The incumbent winners in the drama and comedy series races not being eligible again also caused some major changes to the way nominations shook out. Both dominated last year when it came to acting, writing and directing categories, in addition to series, for example. Even though there may have been fewer spots available in certain categories this year, those races were thrown wide open.
Naturally, that allowed for quite a few new additions — both expected and not. Here, Variety breaks down the snubs and surprises of the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards nominations.

“The Undoing” was created by multiple Emmy-winning writer/producer David E. Kelley (“L.A. Law,” “Picket Fences,” “The Practice,” “Ally McBeal,” “Big Little Lies”) and directed by Emmy-winning director Susanne Bier (“The Night Manager”), based on the book “You Should Have Known” by Jean Hanff Korelitz. The series follows Grace Sachs (Nicole Kidman), who lives a picture-perfect life in New York City as a successful therapist, married to esteemed doctor Jonathan Fraser (Hugh Grant), raising their son Henry (Noah Jupe).
Their lives painfully unravel after a mysterious woman is brutally murdered, Jonathan goes missing and it is later revealed that the victim was Jonathan’s mistress. With Grace’s best friend Sylvia (Lily Rabe) by her side, a series of shocking revelations rock her world as the family endure a painful trial with their hotshot defense lawyer Haley Fitzgerald (Noma Dumezweni), who is hired by Grace’s rich, influential father...

Ethan Hawke is a four-time Oscar nominee for “Training Day”, “Before Sunset”, “Before Midnight” and “Boyhood”, but he’s never been recognized at the Emmy Awards. Until now?
Not only does Hawke play famed abolitionist John Brown on Showtime’s “The Good Lord Bird,” but he’s also on the Emmy ballot for writing and producing the limited series. That means he could get a whopping three Emmy noms for this project alone. Hawke was recently nominated as a lead actor at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, losing to Mark Ruffalo (“I Know This Much Is True”) both times. The good news for Hawke? Ruffalo is not eligible at this year’s Emmys since he claimed last year’s prize.

Paul Bettany (‘WandaVision’) has a stronger chance than you think to win the Emmy, say these Experts
Usually when you think of Marvel TV shows, you don’t automatically think of awards. But “WandaVision” could be the one to change all of that. This Disney Plus limited series broke the water cooler earlier this year for its genre-bending story about fan-fave “Avengers” Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany). Both actors delivered performances at the top of their games, with Bettany even getting major Emmy buzz for his dual roles as “Soul Vision” (the decent and honorable leading man) and “White Vision” (the emotionless and intimidating antagonist).
Currently 24 of Gold Derby’s Experts have made their Emmy predictions for Best Limited Series Actor, and Bettany comes in third place to win thanks to the support of these two: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) and Kaitlin Thomas (Gold Derby). The other savvy prognosticators are split between Ethan Hawke (“The Good Lord Bird”), Hugh Grant (“The Undoing”) and Joel Edgerton...

“One of the challenges when you’re working in this milieu is that these people are so wealthy and so busy,” declares production designer Lester Cohen. “To get them to pause and even contemplate letting the great unwashed into their very palatial homes is a challenge,” he says. Cohen, alongside collaborators Keri Lederman and Doug Huszti were tasked with the lavish production design on “The Undoing,” HBO’s six-part thriller set among the wealthiest of New York’s high society. For BAFTA-winning editor Ben Lester, the best part of editing any project is “trying to do justice to what is on the page and recreate that feeling on the screen,” he says of allowing the audience to feel the way he does when he first reads through a script.
As for his work on HBO’s six-part thriller “The Undoing,” Lester reveals that it was particularly challenging and exciting in the editing room after post-production was shut down due to the pandemic, because key department heads were able to revisit their work months later, with a fresh and potentially more discerning eye. “To have that distance and come back and watch it more objectively was really great,” he admits. “To finish it and be away from it for months,” he says, “was a bit disruptive. But, we rode with it!” Watch the exclusive video interview with Lester above.

“I loved her! I loved her. You could say that Hugh Grant has been taken for granted. In his 39-year film and television career, he has collected only one major industry peer group award: a BAFTA for his starring role in the 1994 British rom-com “Four Weddings and a Funeral” (which also won him his only Golden Globe). Now the actor is looking to grab his first Screen Actors Guild Awards statuette for his dramatic turn as the multi-sided Jonathan Fraser in the HBO miniseries “The Undoing,” which earned him a limited series/TV movie actor bid, bringing his career haul to four citations.

If you watched The Undoing, you know there were many stars in the hit show. There was Nicole Kidman as Grace Fraser, the wronged wife at the center of the series. There was Hugh Grant as Jonathan Fraser, her husband-turned-suspect in his lover's murder trial. There were also an array of supporting players—Édgar Ramírez as Detective Joe Mendoza, Noah Jupe as their son, Henry Fraser; Lily Rabe as their friend, Sylvia Steinetz; and, of course, Matilda De Angelis as the deceased Elena Alves. But, among the all-star cast was another emerging star not listed in the credits: Grace Fraser's fabulous coat collection. Ever since the camera zoomed...

Best TV Movie/Limited Series
Updated: Feb. 24, 2021
Awards Commentary:
This year’s limited series category is an ambitious field, made up of personal tales like “Small Axe” and “Unorthodox,” an addictive mystery in “The Undoing” and a boundary-pushing, honest relationship tale with “Normal People.” But the compelling performance by Anya Taylor-Joy in “The Queen’s Gambit,” which manages to make chess exciting and one young woman’s personal journey combating her demons even more compelling, is the true frontrunner here.
And The Predicted Winner Is: "The Queen's Gambit" (Netflix)–
Executive Producers: William Horberg, Allan Scott, Scott Frank
Synopsis: Beth Harmon (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) is an orphan who becomes a chess prodigy, but alcoholism may prevent her from becoming the world champion.

Updated: Feb. 24, 2021
Awards Commentary:
It’s hard to know this much is true with the Golden Globes, but it feels like Mark Ruffalo finally has one coming — especially after winning the Emmy for his double turn in HBO’s “I Know This Much Is True” — in which he plays twins in the limited series. But the Globes may finally grant Hugh Grant (“The Undoing”) another win, given his sixth nomination (his last win was in 1995 for “Four Weddings and a Funeral). The star-studded category also boasts Ethan Hawke (“The Good Lord Bird”), Jeff Daniels (“The Comey Rule”) and Bryan Cranston (“Your Honor”), so none of these names would be a surprise.

In the wake of his Golden Globe nomination announced Wednesday, Hugh Grant paid tribute to the “genius” of his fellow nominees from HBO’s limited series The Undoing, explained the challenges of playing an unhinged man, and hinted a little at his upcoming Guy Ritchie film.
In The Undoing, Grant is Jonathan Fraser, a pediatric oncologist and seemingly ideal husband to Kidman’s character Grace and father to Noah Jupe’s Henry. But Fraser also happens to be a dangerous sociopath who murdered his mistress.
Did Grant relish the opportunity to play this subversive villain?
“There were other attractions to the project,” he told Deadline. “Susanne Bier is a great genius, so is David E. Kelley, so is Nicole Kidman, but I’m not sure if I would have done it if I’d just been the...

Though The Undoing has been promoted as a "limited series", it feels like a "mini-series" with a natural conclusion. Still, this series is a reteaming of Nicole Kidman and executive producer David E. Kelley and they previously worked together on Big Little Lies. That HBO series was intended to be just one season but was renewed for a second season and may end up getting a third season someday. Warning: major spoilers for The Undoing ahead. Sylvia didn't do it. You'd certainly know that if you've already watched the sixth and final episode of HBO's psychological thriller The Undoing. After weeks of fan chatter about the whodunnit, the limited series neatly wrapped a bow on the end. Yes, following all that bloodshed, muck and courtroom back-and-forth, Elena's (Matilda De Angelis) murderer was ultimately Hugh Grant's Jonathan Fraser, the sociopathic oncologist who proved to repeatedly lie to his wife Grace (Nicole Kidman) as well as his son Henry (Noah Jupe), his father-in-law (Donald Sutherland) and himself. Leading into the finale, viewers suspected just about...

“The Undoing” finale was the television event of the year so far for HBO. The premium cabler’s parent company announced the show’s Nov. 29 finale drew the biggest audience for an HBO series since July 2019.
WarnerMedia stated that “The Undoing” finale garnered 3 million viewers across all platforms, which makes the show the most-watched night of viewing for an original series on HBO since “Big Little Lies” aired its finale in 2019. “The Undoing,” which starred Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, has also been a weekly ratings success for the premium cabler; total viewing increased 43 percent from last week and more than doubled premiere night numbers, while linear performance was up 42 percent from last week and up 168 percent from the series premiere, according to WarnerMedia. It was HBO’s first original series to grow its audience each week, the company said.
WarnerMedia also said that “The Undoing” also enjoyed viewership success on HBO Max.

HBO's miniseries The Undoing came to an end with a dramatic series finale on Nov. 29, in which we discovered that the answer to Elena Alves's killer was right in front of us the entire time - the obvious suspect, Jonathan Fraser (Hugh Grant). While the series wrapped up most of our questions, fans are already asking for more. But it seems like everyone from the actors to the creators all have different opinions about whether or not we'll see the story continue.
Nicole Kidman, the star behind Grace Fraser, doesn't think a second season is necessary. "It's not like a drama series where you're not quite sure how they're going to evolve and you have a next season," she told Entertainment Weekly. "That's why I say it's like cinema, because you have a beginning, middle, and end." But speaking with The New York Times, creator David E. Kelley had an...

According to the network, the finale drew a total of 3 million viewers across all platforms, which represents a 43% increase from the penultimate episode and more than double the premiere’s tally. That also makes it the most-watched episode of any HBO shows since the “Big Little Lies” season 2 finale last year.
In terms of the linear HBO airing, viewing for the finale was up 42% from the week prior and a whopping 168% from the premiere. “The Undoing” is also the first HBO series in the network’s history to grow week-to-week over the corse of its six episodes.

HBO's The Undoing managed to wrap up season one with a nice bow during Sunday's finale. After weeks of trying to figure out who was responsible for the murder of Elena Alves (Matilda De Angelis), it was finally confirmed that Jonathan Fraser (Hugh Grant) was, in fact, the killer. Even though we got the closure we needed from the season finale, many fans are still wondering whether there'll be a season two, and the answer to that seems to be a no.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, director Susanne Bier noted that the decision to make the series six episodes was intentional. "This is a tight story, which is why I think six hours is perfect," Bier explained. "There's something about six that has a natural arc."

If the Television Academy doesn't give Noma Dumezweni an Emmy for her performance on The Undoing, I'll sculpt a trophy out of gold by hand, fly to England, and deliver the replica to her myself because that is how much she deserves the accolade. The British actress stars in the HBO miniseries as Haley Fitzgerald, a highly sought-after defense attorney hired to represent Jonathan Fraser when he's pinned as the prime suspect in the vicious murder of Elena Alves. Though Dumezweni acts alongside other big-name stars in the show - including Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant, Donald Sutherland, and Sutherland's unruly eyebrows - she commands attention so powerfully that all other characters fade into the background when she's on screen.

After Thanksgiving dinner, we were understandably full—not of gravy-coated turkey or decadently flavorful pumpkin pie, but of guesses, guesses, and more guesses. Since the October premiere of HBO's six-episode limited series The Undoing, we've been meticulously mapping out all the plausibilities surrounding the big question at hand: Who killed Elena (Matilda De Angelis)? And leading into the series finale on Sunday, Nov. 29, we weren't quite sure who to call the lead suspect, which was the point. Created by Big Little Lies writer David E. Kelley, the psychological thriller follows Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant's Grace and Jonathan Fraser, an ultra-rich couple living in Manhattan's Upper East...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the series finale of “The Undoing.”
When Hugh Grant’s wife, Anna Eberstein, saw an early cut of his latest television project, HBO’s “The Undoing,” she told him she wanted the couple at the center of the story to get back together — something he considers “quite an interesting instinct,” given all they go through in the six-episode series from executive producer and writer David E. Kelley, and executive producer and director Susanne Bier.
This was before she knew that one half of the couple, Grant’s Jonathan Fraser, was in fact Elena’s (Matilda De Angelis) murderer, though — a truth revealed in the finale episode aptly titled “The Bloody Truth.”
Her reaction, Grant tells Variety, was initially that she hoped he was not the killer “because I think these two love each other and have something together.” But...

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “The Undoing,” Episode 6, “The Bloody Truth,” including the ending.]
After six weeks filled with denials, fresh accusations, and alternate theories, “The Undoing” finally answered its central question: Who killed Elena Alves?
Well, it turns out the answer was hiding in plain sight, behind the endearing veil of an extremely charming Hugh Grant. Dr. Jonathan Fraser, the prime suspect all along, was officially confirmed as the killer in Episode 6, ending a lengthy guessing game that spurred intense reactions on social media — in addition to high ratings for HBO.
The actor in charge of deceiving not only his fellow characters, but also an attentive at-home audience, is a bit relieved the secret is out. Speaking to IndieWire the morning after the finale aired, Grant discussed an “exhausting” month-and-a-half of gauging reactions to the HBO limited series, why it was important he knew the truth before joining the project in the first place,...

Did Jonathan Fraser have a chance in court without the help of Hayley Fitzgerald? Probably not. HBO's psychological thriller The Undoing finally came to a momentous close on Sunday, Nov. 29 after six episodes that legitimately left us reeling. The series, created by Big Little Lies writer David E. Kelley, follows Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman's Grace and Jonathan Fraser, two wealthy Manhattanites thrust into the middle of a murder mystery after a mother (Matilda De Angelis) at their son Henry's (Noah Jupe) high-profile prep school is bludgeoned to death. Up until the end, the show had fans throwing out guesses for all the potential suspects—including Grace herself. And while we'll save you from...

Will the story be wrapped up by the end of the first season of The Undoing TV show on HBO? What a finale!
The story of Jonathan, Grace, and Henry Fraser is over, and by the skin of their teeth, they all lived to the end.
The Undoing Season 1 Episode 6 confirmed that Jonathan Fraser was a cold-blooded murderer.
There is a reason The Undoing worked so well as a series, and it all comes down to casting.
I never doubted that Jonathan murdered Elena, but I've had the unfortunate displeasure of being duped by a sociopath with narcissistic personality disorder.
Casting Hugh Grant, once the world's rom-com sweetheart, in the role of a man as cold and unfeeling as Jonathan Fraser allowed the audience to search for any indication that Jonathan wasn't the killer. Hugh Grant cannot be a killer!
But Jonathan was the killer, and just like Grace and all of her clients before her -- just like me when I was enmeshed with someone similar to Jonathan --...

The finale of the HBO miniseries “The Undoing” airing on Sunday night set off a flurry of wannabe sleuths theorizing who killed Elena Alves. Among those embroiled in the whodunit guessing game: Ava DuVernay, Issa Rae and Kerry Washington.
For those not up to speed, “The Undoing” is a psychological thriller starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant as Grace and Jonathan Fraser, a rich Manhattan couple whose son goes to an elite boarding school. They comfortable life is shattered when Jonathan is arrested for the murder of Elena Alves, who befriended — and then kissed — Grace over the course of several encounters in the first episode.
As Jonathan’s murder trial drags on, everyone in Grace’s life, including herself, becomes a suspect in the murder. In last week’s episode, Grace is horrified to find the murder weapon in her son’s violin case.

The very last thing a man on trial needs is for his family to doubt him, but after The Undoing Season 1 Episode 5, it's impossible to imagine he'll have the support he deserately needs as the trial continues.

Nobody loves Nicole Kidman quite like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association: she has received a staggering 14 Golden Globe nominations over the last three decades. With Kidman’s latest HBO series, “The Undoing,” which bowed October 26 to good numbers, it seems a foregone conclusion that Kidman will once again see herself in contention.

Early Globe victories for Kidman came for lead performances in the films “To Die For” (1995), “Moulin Rouge!” (2001) and “The Hours” (2002), the last of which also brought the Australian her first Best Actress Oscar. Hugh Grant has confirmed that he caught coronavirus at the start of 2020, describing his various symptoms as both embarrassing and panic-inducing as they developed.
The actor, who is currently doing the rounds promoting his new psychological thriller miniseries The Undoing, where he stars opposite Nicole Kidman, didn’t paint a particularly fun picture of his Covid-19 experience when he popped up on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week.
Grant apparently caught coronavirus all the way back in February when he was in London with his wife, Anna Elisabet Eberstein. He didn’t get tested (it was virtually impossible in the UK at that time anyway) but confirmed that he now has the relevant antibodies, which he says he’s “rather proud of”.

HBO’s limited series The Undoing is drawing solid ratings for the premium cabler, reaching a series high with its latest episode Sunday night. Viewership totaled 1.7 million across the linear premiere, including two replays and digital. That’s up 18% from episode 2 and 21% from the series premiere on Oct. 25. The series also ranked as the No. 1 most social primetime premium cable series Sunday night.

“The Undoing” continues to be a ratings success for HBO.
The miniseries’ third episode rose to series high viewership numbers on Sunday night, drawing 1.7 million viewers across all platforms. That represents roughly a 21% increase from the series premiere a couple weeks back, and an 18% up tick from episode 2 last Sunday. For comparison, that 1.7 million figure matches the season high of fellow recent HBO drama “Perry Mason,” and is larger than the audience managed by the “Lovecraft Country” season finale from late October.

HBO's The Undoing is basically one twist after another. In the premiere episode of the six-part miniseries, Elena Alves (Matilda De Angelis) is brutally murdered, and now it looks like Jonathan Fraser (Hugh Grant) may be responsible for her death. Not only that, but it turns out, he's the father of her newborn daughter.
If you've read Jean Hanff Korelitz's You Should Have Known, the novel on which the show is based, then you probably already knew that Jonathan was the father. In the second episode, we find out that Jonathan was secretly having an affair with Elena prior to her death, and Elena's husband, Fernando Alves (Ismael Cruz Córdova), demanded a paternity test, insisting to police that he's not the father of Elena's baby. Shortly after, we see Grace Fraser (Nicole Kidman) having visions of Jonathan and Elena having sex, which was probably writer David E. Kelley...

It looks like The Undoing Season 1 Episode 3 is attempting to throw our scent off of Jonathan Fraser and onto his wife.
But it's not going to be that easy, no matter how determined the hapless detectives seem to put Grace in the spotlight.
Grace's mind is all over the place, rightly so, but I don't for a minute think she had anything to do with Elena's murder. What is interesting, though, is how The Undoing shines a light on how easy it is to become a suspect through no fault of your own.
"Do No Harm" picked up pretty much right where The Undoing Season 1 Episode 2 ended: with Grace on the phone with emergency services, turning in her husband and claiming to be terrified.
Grace should be terrified of her husband. He's not letting up on his claim of innocence, nor should he under the circumstances. But if Grace...

The world is crumbling around Grace Fraser.
She went from being a woman who believed she had a perfect life with a perfect husband to discovering that everything she thought she knew about the man she was married to was untrue.
The Undoing Season 1 Episode 2 found Grace standing tall but stumbling in her convictions with so much uncertainty suddenly at her doorstep.
The red flags about Jonathan keep on waving, whether he's nearby or not. There isn't much about the man that spells warm and caring, the characteristics that Grace described to Detective Mendoza.
Franklin: Still no word from Jonathan?
Grace: No.
Franklin: I guess it's safe to assume he's not in Cleveland.
