THR reports that Haunted Mansion director Justin Simien to set to helm Heist: Or How to Steal a Planet, a sci-fi crime thriller based on the comic series by Paul Tobin and Arjuna Susini.
The comic is “set on the planet Heist, home to billions of the worst criminals in the galaxy. The ruling pan-galactic government has no idea what to do with the planet, but a conman named Glane Breld and his band of thieves know exactly what to do with Heist: steal it. The story follows Breld on his madcap scheme to pull off the biggest heist in the history of the galaxy.” I’m not too familiar with the comic series, but that sounds like fun. Christopher Yost, best known for Thor: Ragnarok and The Mandalorian, will pen the script.
In a statement, Justin Simien said, “How To Steal Planet wowed me and I’m humbled...

Move over Batman, there’s a new flavour of the month in town. Superman’s having a good time of it right now. He’s just finished a mammoth storyline featuring Mongul in his own books, has been involved in Dark Crisis, just celebrated/ commemorated the 30th anniversary of his death/return, and is now getting another shiny special. Throw in the fact we get stories from Mark Waid and Marv Wolfman here, and I’m a happy man. This special has the typical DC anthology setup, with four different stories from four different creative teams.
Let’s take a look.

According to Deadline, Justin Simien (Dear White People) is set to develop a TV series adaptation of Geiger for Paramount Television Studios. The best-selling series was created by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank for Image Comics, and Johns will develop the series adaptation alongside Simien.
“Set in the years after a nuclear war has ravaged the planet, desperate outlaws battle for survival in a world of radioactive chaos,” reads the official description of the Geiger comic. “Out past the poisoned wasteland lives a man even the Nightcrawlers and Organ People fear. Some name him Joe Glow, others call him the Meltdown Man. But his name…is Geiger.” The comic series is a lot of fun, with some great visuals to go along with it, particularly when Geiger is powered up. Tyler James Williams has come a long way since his days as a child actor on “Sesame Street.” After starring on “Everybody Hates Chris” as a teenager and moving on to significant roles on such shows as “The Walking Dead” and “Criminal Minds,” the 29-year-old has now earned his first Emmy nomination for his supporting turn on the ABC sitcom “Abbott Elementary.” This makes him one of the 12 youngest men to ever compete for the Best Comedy Supporting Actor award.
On “Abbott Elementary,” Williams plays Gregory Eddie, a long-term substitute teacher at the titular fictional Philadelphia public school. His episode submission, “Work Family,” involves Gregory seeking help from his veteran colleagues Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter) after he realizes his first graders are performing below state standards. Later, he is further thrown off by a phone conversation with his father (Orlando Jones), who pressures...

This article contains The Batman spoilers. We have a spoiler-free review here.
The Batman features a fairly radical reinvention of classic Gotham City villain, The Riddler. For most of Riddler’s pop culture history, he’s been a relatively harmless criminal genius. While lives have definitely been lost at his hand, he’s usually depicted as someone more interested in outsmarting Batman and the authorities than he is of taking lives. Sure, there have been exceptions (the serial killer Riddler in the Batman: Earth One series by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank springs immediately to mind), but he’s generally not a terribly bloodthirsty criminal.
In The Batman, however, the Riddler is a far more ominous figure. And while his mission is one that ultimately would seem to align with Batman’s, to rid the city of corruption, his methods are still chilling, and it leads to some graphic murder onscreen.

Shazam! is one of the very best Dceu movies, a perfect distillation of the heart and wonder of the classic character blended with modern sensibilities, aided by director David F. Sandberg’s eye for “just scary enough” ’80s-style family horror. The fact that we’re getting a sequel in almost exactly two years is cause for celebration, if some impatience. But Shazam 2, officially known as Shazam: Fury of the Gods, is now filming, which means that some looks at the DC movie are going to make their way out into the world…whether the filmmakers want them to or not.
But Sandberg has always been a savvy social media user, knows how to tease fans just enough, and also when to give them what they want. So with Shazam 2 doing some outdoor filming in Atlanta, and with the knowledge that folks were likely to snap photos of Zachary Levi’s new suit,...

As first revealed in the trailer released at DC FanDome last summer, The Batman brings a brand-new Riddler to the big screen and he looks unlike any version of the character we’ve ever seen in live-action. With a disguise more closely resembling masked villains like Batman archnemesis Hush or Birthday Boy from the Earth One comics by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, Reeves’ take on the classic DC baddie seems to lean heavily on the serial killer backstory established by Johns’ book, and later used in the Telltale Batman games.
Indeed, the opening of the trailer sees the Riddler taping up one of his victims and leaving behind a message for Batman,...

I think it’s fair to say that people think of Geoff Johns as a DC guy. His runs on books like Green Lantern and The Flash are legendary, and he is of course currently heavily involved in Warner’s (who own DC of course) comic book based TV and film projects. His comics work outside of DC is very slim, limited to some work for Marvel the best part of two decades ago. So when he announced this book and the fact it would be published by Image, more than a few eyebrows were raised. The fact it was a brand new creator owned project was also a new wrinkle. Johns has only once created a non Marvel/ DC book, and that was Olympus for the European Humanoids publisher a long way back. So not quite uncharted waters,...

I’m a pretty easy mark when it comes to Superman books. A quick check of my collection shows over 2000 books with Superman in them. Throw in Superboy and Supergirl and, well, I guess I’ve got a super-addiction. But I digress. As much as I love Superman, he’s been a well travelled property in his 83 years of being published, and coming up with new approaches, or new spins on old wheels, is getting harder and harder. Superman: Red and Blue seems to exist for just that reason, to give Superman some fresh takes, some new looks, but to retain that central core that defines him. all in just the colours red and blue, of course. I like the idea, so I hope the execution lives up to it. Let’s take a look.

Former chief creative officer of DC Geoff Johns will be publishing his first comic book outside of the company in more than a decade, with the announcement of Geiger, a new creator-owned title for Image Comics launching in 2021.
The series is set years after a nuclear war almost destroyed the Earth, and named after the one man considered the most dangerous in the radioactive wastelands left inhabitable. Johns created it with artist Gary Frank, his partner on Doomsday Clock and the Batman: Earth One series of graphic novels.

As Grant Morrison wraps up his sprawling multiversal epic in The Green Lantern, the architect of the modern DC Metaverse will also be finishing his foray into Earth One. Wonder Woman: Earth One Vol. 3, the finale of Morrison and Yanick Paquette’s multi-year graphic reimagining will be arriving in stores this march.
Volume three picks up right where the last story left off. After successfully beating back Uberfraulein, the leader of an invading Nazi force who the Amazons attempted to rehabilitate after her capture, Wonder Woman has become queen of the Amazons. Diana is preparing her sisters for an attack from man’s world; specifically, government weapons dealer Max Lord and his A.R.E.S. armors. She’s determined to fight back against what she perceives as the god of war and try and bring Themiscyran values to the world of man.

Nikolai Baslajik, better known as the artist BossLogic, has dropped a new piece of art on Twitter that teases an upcoming Injustice 3 announcement at the DC FanDome digital event later this month. You can check out the promo image above.
The artist is known for creating promo art for several high-profile games, most recently the key art for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Baslajik may have been hired to do the same for Injustice 3 (stylized “Injustic3” in the promo), although neither the artist nor WB Games have commented on the project. Adding fuel to the speculation fire is the fact that Baslajik tagged NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon on the promo. NetherRealm and Boon, of course, are the creators of the Injustice fighting game series.
The timing of the image seems to track with everything else WB has going on on the games side. At DC FanDome, the publisher is...

Did you think the continued explorations of the Watchmen universe were going to end with Dr. Manhattan and Superman explaining the DC Metaverse in the pages of Doomsday Clock or Angela Abar taking that step in HBO’s Watchmen TV series? Certainly not. And certainly not in a world that is somehow more confused and even more disordered than the one into which the original Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons was published in 1986.
While the HBO TV series was a true sequel to the Moore and Gibbons masterwork, the comic book Doomsday Clock by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank was more of an expansion, exploring what it would mean if the metaphorical influence of Watchmen on the comic book industry was made literal with Dr. Manhattan altering the course of events of the DC Universe itself. But the latest use of Moore and Gibbons’ ideas is focused on...

DC character 80th anniversaries are the gift that keep on giving for everyone. For fans like me, these Specials have been fantastic. For creators, a chance to do a stand-alone tale from a specific era, or for a creator with a long history with that character a chance to go home again. Obviously for DC, those balance sheets should look decent too. Green Lantern’s 80th is slightly different, in that there have been many Green Lantern’s down the years. The most famous, Hal Jordan, didn’t appear until the dawn of the Silver Age in the 1950’s, so DC are cheating a little here, as it’s really the 80th anniversary of the original Green Lantern himself, Alan Scott. My favourite Justice Society of America member, as it happens, but probably not a guy to carry a 100 page book by himself.

One of several new horror comic books launched at Hill House Comics, Joe Hill's new imprint at DC, Plunge follows a ship crew searching for castaways in the Arctic sea, but as they soon find out, the castaways aren't quite themselves anymore. Featuring a creeping sense of dread reminiscent of John Carpenter's The Thing (and there are definitely some nods to Carpenter's ’82 film to be found here), the second issue of Plunge comes out on March 18th, and ahead of its release, we've been provided with exclusive preview pages as a special treat for Daily Dead readers!
Following the discovery of a dead body, the members of a ship crew discuss their foreboding find (and whether or not the deceased shared some words with a member of their crew) in our exclusive preview pages from Plunge #2.

Jay Garrick, the original Flash, gets his first solo story in over a decade in The Flash #750.
Jay Garrick was the first Flash of the DC Universe. Debuting (appropriately enough) in the pages of Flash Comics #1 in 1939, he was a founding member of the first superhero team in history with the Justice Society of America, proved so popular he earned a solo book (with the quaintly 1940s title of All-Flash), and ran laps around every other speedster in comics until 1951 when he and most other superheroes not named Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman were quietly put out to pasture in favor of romance, horror, crime, and war titles. Jay was replaced by the sleeker, more jet-age friendly Barry Allen in 1956, and in an era where kids were still expected to outgrow the comics of their youth, it seemed that Jay was destined to become a forgotten relic of comics history.

The Scarlet Speedster gets his own big anniversary issue in February
Joshua Williamson's The Flash is all coming to a head, 80+ issues in, and DC announced another big milestone for the Scarlet Speedster coming up in his run. This one is the celebration of 750 issues of Flash comics, coming in February.
The Flash #750 launches a new story arc in Williamson's run: "The Flash Age." Williamson pens the arc, with art on the big issue from Rafa Sandoval and Jordi Tarragona. With the Speed Force wrecking everything about Barry's life, a new villain runs onto the stage: Paradox. In his quest to wreck The Flash's existence, Paradox hits Barry with Paradox's herald, Godspeed.
Like the other big anniversary issues DC's been publishing lately, this one is oversized with a collection of all star artists drawing variant covers to show the character through the decades. Nicola Scott (Wonder...

I bought and read the original Watchmen series when it came out in 1986, and it is hard to convey now just how groundbreaking that was. I bought the 12 individual issues as they were published, and those monthly gaps waiting for the next chapter were absolute torture. This is pre-internet, pre-social media remember, so apart from comic shop gossip, you just had to wait. The thing was with Watchmen, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons packed so much into each issue you needed that time to fully digest, and understand everything that was going on, as multi-layered as it was. Stories within stories, heroes that seemed more like villains, a fully realised timeline and world. A rich tapestry was woven indeed, and when the story as envisaged by Alan Moore, 12 issues and out, was complete that was that.

In addition to everyone wanting to hear how Robert Pattinson’s voice for the Dark Knight will sound (it apparently shares similarities to Willem Dafoe), I’m sure we’re all dying to see his costume to be worn in The Batman. Considering how this character has been around for 80 years, director Matt Reeves and his crew could go in a variety of directions.
As it so happens, there’s a rumor going around saying that aesthetic inspiration could very well be drawn from Batman: Earth One. For those unfamiliar, those were a pair of graphic novels (with more hopefully one the way) written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Gary Frank retelling the Caped Crusader’s earlier years on the job in a universe separate from DC Comics’ regular continuity.
Upon hearing these whispers, digital artist John Regan (ShatterverseEnt on Twitter) wasted little time imagining how “Battinson” would look with a Gary Frank-inspired twist.

Superman is key to the very fabric of the DC Universe, and Doomsday Clock is using Watchmen concepts to explore this.
This article contains massive Doomsday Clock spoilers.
Since its launch, Doomsday Clock has promised to answer all our questions about the post-Rebirth DC Universe, and in the process solve some problems left over from New 52 continuity. With the release of Doomsday Clock #10, a great many of those issues start to get resolved.
Doomsday Clock is the Geoff Johns/Gary Frank comic that is integrating the iconic characters from Watchmen into the DC universe proper. It attempts to be as complicated and geopolitically relevant as its predecessor, turning the original’s nuclear panic to a metahuman arms race and placing Firestorm, Russia, Black Adam and Khandaq, and Superman at the center of a rapidly escalating global conflict that, at the end of Doomsday Clock #8, had very nearly...

We have a handy guide to everyone in the Shazam family who can call down the power of the lightning.
With one magic word, Shazam has become one of the greatest superheroes in history. Billy Batson was imbued with the power of the wizard Shazam when he spoke that one magic word, Shazam! A fierce lightning strike would transform Billy into the World’s Mightiest Mortal. He first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 (1939) and was created by Bill Parker and C. C. Beck. Shazam took the world of comics by storm and became the most popular character on the stands. Captain Marvel (as he was then known) and his magic word even outsold Superman much to DC Comics’ chagrin.

Who is the mysterious character introduced in the Shazam end credits scene?
This article consists of nothing but Shazam! spoilers. We have a spoiler free review of the film here.
Shazam! continues the arc of recovery we've seen in recent Dceu movies. Much like Wonder Woman and Aquaman, it exists firmly within the DC Extended Universe, but also doesn't spend much time worrying about things like setting up crossovers or potential team-ups in the future. But what it does extraordinarily well is lean into what makes the magical world of the Shazam family so unique in the first place. After all, a character who has been around for 80 years certainly has enough mythology to support a franchise all his own, and doesn't need help from the Justice League or anyone else.
Shazam! has two after credits scenes, one that happens mid-credits, and one that happens at the very end.

Shazam! marks the first time the character has come to the big screen as a big budget movie. The movie is based heavily on one specific Shazam! story, the 2011 origin tale by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, but throughout there are elements drawn from 80 years of Shazam history. Mark Strong talks about getting into character as evil Shazam villain, Dr. Sivana.
Shazam! introduces a new magically powered villain to the Dceu. Well, "new" is relative when you're talking about Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, a supervillain with 80 years of comic book history behind him. And the actor who plays him, Mark Strong, has some supervillain history of his own.
Strong, of course, was one of the only good things about the 2011 Green Lantern movie, an ill-fated attempt to kick off a DC superhero cinematic universe. There, Strong played Sinestro, a respected officer of the Green Lantern Corps who, of course, is destined to eventually become Hal Jordan’s greatest enemy. Strong was perfect in the role, and the movie waited until its own post-credits scene to tease his villainous destiny. But given how that movie was quickly swept under the rug, it may seem surprising to see...

Shazam! is a lighthearted superhero movie from a director not really known for telling lighthearted stories. Director David F. Sandberg is known for his work in the only successful (modern) horror movie shared cinematic universe, with the Conjuring-adjacent Annabelle: Creation, not to mention the tense and violent Lights Out. But Shazam! has humor and heart to spare, a brightly colored romp through the magical corners of the Dceu.
But you don’t have to look far to see how Sandberg’s horror influences are felt in the movie. A key point of the film is the release of the magical avatars of the Seven Deadly Sins: Pride, Envy, Lust, Sloth, Gluttony, Greed, and Wrath, who are controlled by the villainous Dr. Sivana. They've been represented in the comics before, with their statue forms appearing in the very first Shazam story in 1939, and appearing as their scary, demon-y...

The Shazam movie costume is a new interpretation of a classic look. So how do they make it relevant for Dceu fans?
There’s one major challenge that faces DC superhero movies, and it is one that’s not quite as present for their competition: the costumes of their heroes. While most Marvel costumes can be explained away as functional extensions of their scientific, secret agent, or otherworldly professions, DC superhero costumes tend to be, well, superhero costumes. It’s a little tougher to find practical explanations for the fashion choices of Dceu headliners. After all, they’re often as traditional as they come, and some of them date back to the golden age of comics.
Man of Steel got around this by leaning hard into the idea of Superman’s costume as Kryptonian ceremonial wear, while Aquaman delivered a note-perfect translation of King Arthur’s orange and green garb,...

Mark Strong is Dr. Sivana in the Shazam movie. But he's not exactly who you think he is.
To understand Dr. Sivana, a character played by Mark Strong in the upcoming Shazam movie, it helps to have a little bit of a grasp on some ancient comic book history. The Shazam concept, was indisputably a response to Superman and the superhero boom that kicked off the golden age of comics. You swap a sci-fi origin for a magical one, you swap a whole lot of blue in the costume for a whole lot of red, and you’re still left with a super strong, flying, invulnerable, and caped hero. Hell, his very first comic (1939’s Whiz Comics #2) even featured him abusing an automobile, just like Superman did on the cover of 1938’s Action Comics #1.
Some might scratch the surface and point out that both heroes are menaced...
