The big-scale Cinerama fantasy once thought unrecoverable is back — a terrific restoration brings us George Pal’s ode to fairy tales, filmed on Bavarian locations with an international cast. Laurence Harvey and Karl Boehm are the brothers that compiled the famed tales of princesses, witches, magic spells and fiery dragons. Their idealized biography is interspersed with three full fairy tale stories, about a magic cloak of invisibility, a cobbler’s helpful elves, and a pair of fearless dragon slayers. The show has dancing, beautiful locations, a sequence with Puppetoons and a terrific animated dragon. Featured stars are Claire Bloom, Walter Slezak, Barbara Eden, Oscar Homolka, Martita Hunt, Yvette Mimieux, Russ Tamblyn, Jim Backus, Terry-Thomas and Buddy Hackett; a long-form docu goes into fascinating detail explaining how Dave Strohmaier and Tom March accomplished the mind-boggling restoration.

This Friday, a little movie titled Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters. Perhaps you may have seen an advertisement or two about it. The film marks the first official pairing of Bats and Supes in a feature film. Surely there are longtime fans eager to see them pec-to-pec, but some fans will be excited about the film's other big debut: Wonder Woman. Ever since Gal Gadot was cast in the role, comic book (and TV) fans have been eager to find out how Wonder Woman would be realized on the big screen. Shockingly, the character has never had...

After enjoying a little break time, the Cinelinx crew is back to ring in the New Year with a look ahead to some of our most anticipated films of 2016, and why you should be excited as well. Come inside to check out our lists and add your own!
The start of a new year is always filled with promise. While not every film we're looking forward to seeing will be the success we had hoped, we can look ahead with nothing but optimism and hope. As such, a few members on our team decided to break down the films they're most looking forward to seeing throughout the year and corssing their fingers for:
Jordan: My 2015 in movies was pretty amazing, with the return of my beloved franchises and some impressive storytelling. While I had been looking forward to 2015 in movies for a while, 2016 is shaping up to be even more impressive.

What would seem the perfect project for tough-guy director Robert Aldrich still commands a high reputation with some. Ambitious top-dog hobo Lee Marvin squares off against Ernest Borgnine's nearly demonic railroad conductor who routinely murders bums that dare to hitch a ride. The mayhem culminates in a battle on a moving flat car, between Ernie's log chain and Lee's fire ax. But the poetic dialogue and allegorical pretension may be more lethal. I haven’t been a huge fan of the Marvel standalone films post-Avengers. I thought Iron Man 3 was fun, but silly. I found Thor: The Dark World to be drab and boring. They arrived in theaters white hot with the momentum of a colossally successful (in all regards) movie (The Avengers), and I think the films struggled to find a way to “come down” from a movie with such giant scope. Having seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier, though, I feel reinvigorated and excited for Marvel’s cinematic future.
At this point, Marvel Studios can more or less coast. They can play it safe and take it easy because the sheer power of the brand means that it will make money and sell a ton of merchandise. But it would appear that Kevin Feige and co refuse to just rest on their laurels and milk the characters for all they’re worth.

It’s that most wonderful time of the year in which one group of people (journalists) try to figure out what another group of people (Academy members) think are the best films and performances of the year. Sure, we have the Guild nominees, critics awards, and general buzz but there’s only one thing that I can tell you for sure — one of the predictions below will be wrong. And yet we go out on that limb again every year.

Scarlett Johansson may be regarded as one of the most beautiful stars in the world, but she's also an actress who continues to surprise us.
Johansson has juggled various genres, from teen comedies like "The Perfect Score," to quirky indies like "Ghost World," to superhero blockbusters like "Iron Man 2." But this weekend we get the Jersey-fied Johansson in "Don Jon." Scarjo plays Barbara, the new girlfriend of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's porn-addicted title character.
We've seen Johansson on screen since she was just a kid, but there are still tons of facts that you probably never knew about the blonde bombshell, such as her rejection from Nyu's Tisch school or her near-casting in the upcoming "Gravity." Find out more little-known tidbits about the star below.
1. Even though 1998's "The Horse Whisperer" was Johansson's seventh feature film, she was given an "Introducing" credit in it.

With characters such as Black Widow sidelined in favour of their male counterparts, Rachael wonders, where are our superheroine movies?
It's a good decade to be a fan of the superhero genre. I mean, just take a look at the line up of superhero movies coming out over the next few years. We've got Iron Man 3 this May, Man Of Steel, Captain America 2, Thor 2, Ant Man, Guardians Of The Galaxy, a possible Batman reboot, new rumors of Man Of Steel sequel and a Justice League movie just released, and Avengers 2 in 2015. That's a pretty full plate.
However, something's missing. Of the 11 titles listed above, not a single one of them has even a whisper of a female superhero as the main protagonist. As it stands, there is no indication that any unannounced tenth superhero movie will focus on a superheroine either.

With Anthony Mackie already locked down for the key role of Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel is now looking to fill out some additional supporting roles in the upcoming sequel. In particular, they are in search of a female lead for the movie, most likely to play a new love interest for Steve Rogers. Deadline reports that directors Joe and Anthony Russo have narrowed their choices down to a shortlist of five young actresses, many of which primarily have TV experience on their resumes. However, this character may not be the only prominent female role in the film: word on the street is that Scarlett Johannson will also make an appearance as Black Widow. Hit the jump to see who's on the shortlist. Although it's not yet clear what role these actresses are vying for, many believe that it will be Sharon Carter, the niece of Peggy Carter...

” I’d like to speak with you about the Avengers Initiative ”. Can it really be four years ago that Shield director Nicholas Fury ( Samuel L Jackson ) spoke those fateful words to a surprised Tony Stark ( Robert Downey, Jr. ) at the end ( the very tail end, after the final credits ) of Iron Man ? Marvel fans around the globe were ecstatic. The fabled comic book company was now in the film business ( other characters were licensed to other studios ) and Jon Favreau’s rollicking action hit was the first in their partnership with Paramount. With this bit of dialogue, were they announcing their intentions to team up some of their greatest heroes in one massive movie event? Fans were teased again later that Summer when Stark strode into the bar where General ” Thunderbolt ” Ross was drowning his sorrows at the end of The Incredible Hulk. Expectations rose two years later with Iron Man 2...

Loki might have an army, but The Avengers have the Hulk and that’s very apparent as Mr. Mean-and-Green finally makes a decent appearance.
We’ve seen them bickering and getting on each other’s nerves but the latest trailer for The Avengers shows the super team coming together to do some major ass-kicking. Even Steve Rogers and Tony Start are showing mutual respect this time around.
The earlier clips paid extra attention to the main powerhouses of the group, with an occasional shot of Scarlett Johannson’s Black Widow showing up to break the monotony… and give the fan boys something to drool over. This time, however, everyone gets a little screen time. There’s plenty of Fury, a few quick shots of Jeremy Renner doing his Hawkeye thing, and of course, the Hulk finally comes rampaging onto the scene.

Since we last heard about Danny Boyle art heist thriller Trance, Scarlett Johannson was set up to play the lead female alongside James McAvoy. However that seems unlikely, but when one door closes another opens. Rosario Dawson is now set to play the female lead and she won’t be alone. Vincent Cassel will also be joining the cast in a supporting role. But as great as this cast is, we won’t be seeing this project for a while as Boyle will be busy working on the Opening Ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

Since the film adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith‘s horror/classical literature mash up Pride & Prejudice & Zombies was announced back in 2009, two directors have been attached – David O’Russell (The Fighter) and Mike White (writer of School of Rock, Orange County), only to drop out due to scheduling problems. O’Russell’s attempt at the movie even had Natalie Portman set to star. Doomed to development hell, you may think?

Colin Firth is edging closer to genuine leading man status, thanks in part to big awards season recognition for films like A Single Man and The King's Speech. It's a transformation that will take another big step if he takes the lead role in Gambit, a heist thriller remake scripted by Joel and Ethan Coen. We've reported on the film in the past, most recently when The Last Station director Michael Hoffman came on to direct. Now Deadline [1] says Colin Firth is in talks for the lead role of a cat burglar who wants to rob a billionaire. He enlists the help of a waitress who is a dead ringer for the rich guy's late wife. (Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine played the roles in the '66 original.) Sounds like a perfectly good choice for me. As anything that puts an actor who is very versatile with dialogue into a...

There hasn't been a whole lot of good news lately for the adaptation of the popular literary-horror crossover "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." Director David O. And Natalie Portman, who'd been attached to star, stepped down, though she remains involved in a producer role (is there anything this Harvard-educated beauty can't do?).
But suddenly things are looking up. Deadline reports that Scarlett Johansson is potentially on tap to play leading lady Elizabeth Bennett to Bradley Cooper's Mr. Darcy. On paper, Marvel’s “wedding cake” plan seems like a masterstroke.
You own a film studio recently bought out by the giant Disney, with access to about 5000 superheroes. You take the most popular heroes (the ones not owned by Sony or Fox, naturally), give them their own franchises and gradually build up the layers to the plastic bride and groom, The Avengers.
Come 2012, four of the most popular superheroes in Marvel’s stable (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk) will be living under a single, big-budget roof. Foolproof? Maybe.
But while Thor has finished filming and Captain America is halfway through, the crown jewel of Marvel Studios does not seem far away. With The Avengers scheduled for a February shoot, Marvel has to look to the future in order to capitalise on the success of the Iron Man franchise. How can they possibly top The Avengers? And if the film fails,...
