A Pisces, a Taurus, a Capricorn, a Leo, a Virgo, and an Aquarius walk into a rented mansion for their Libra friend’s birthday party. The seven college kids soon run out of booze, go poking around in places they shouldn’t, and summon a fate worse than death when they find a mysterious deck of cards harboring a hidden evil. Title card: “Tarot.” All signs… point to yikes.
Written and directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, Screen Gems’ latest scary movie is willfully ridiculous. It’s also the most original take on the haunted party game since last year’s well-loved “Talk to Me” with its own franchising potential as a supernatural series. If open-minded audiences buy into this transparently trendy gimmick and its melodramatic narrative execution, what feels like a spiritual “Final Destination” spinoff — told by way of an Urban Outfitters’ small gifts display — could very well...

If you’ve ever fumbled through a dusty old deck of tarot cards, hoping they’d reveal something about your future, Tarot (2024) might just make you think twice before you shuffle again. This horror flick, helmed by first-timers Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, deals a hand that’s both terrifying and delightfully over-the-top. The film taps into the old-school charm of supernatural slashers, where a group of friends find themselves in a deadly game of cosmic consequences.

The premise of Tarot hinges on a birthday bash gone terribly wrong in a creepy Catskills mansion. Cue the horror movie checklist: a group of college friends, a recently-ended relationship stirring the pot, and, of course, a mysterious item unearthed in the least welcoming part of the house.

Back in December, the folks at Spooky Pinball announced that they were making a very limited edition pinball machine inspired by Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. If you (like me) weren’t able to get one of those 888 machines, well, at least that wasn’t our only chance to play a Chainsaw pinball game. A while back, Zen Studios brought a horror-themed pinball game called Pinball M to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Pinball M includes pinball games inspired by the likes of John Carpenter’s The Thing, the Chucky franchise, Dead by Daylight, Duke Nukem, and Zen Studios’ Lovecraft-inspired Wrath of the Elder Gods Director’s Cut – and on June 6th, it will be adding a pinball game inspired by the 2022 film Texas Chainsaw Massacre!

Set in a world where every door creaks and there isn’t a single well-lit location, “Tarot” is little more than a clearinghouse of horror clichés.
Co-written, directed and executive produced by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (the podcast series “Classified”), the supernatural thriller repeatedly leverages the genre’s laziest mood-setting and suspense-building devices to keep its audience on the edge of their seats. But even featuring a moderately charming ensemble led by “Spider-Man: Homecoming” breakout Jacob Batalon, the film’s PG-13 rating — and lack of virtually any characters other than its doomed protagonists — severely limits the efficacy of those techniques and tropes even when they’re deployed skillfully.
Batalon plays Paxton, the wisecracker among a studiously diverse college-age friend group that rents a remote mansion to celebrate the birthday of Elise (Larsen Thompson). Scouring their rental for booze, the group foolishly breaks into a room marked “Keep Out,” where...

Writers/Directors Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg keep it simple with the PG-13 horror movie Tarot. Instead of a cold open to hook audiences on the horror, Tarot launches straight into introducing the group of seven friends partaking in a party weekend at an isolated manor.
It’s there that they dabble with things they shouldn’t, setting in motion a curse that will pick them off one by one, slasher style. With an equal group of monsters to match, Tarot has the makings of a breezy gateway horror movie perfect for sleepovers, though it’s undermined by surface-level characters and storytelling.
The moment the beer runs dry, forcing the friends to seek entertainment elsewhere, birthday girl Elise (Larsen Thompson) insists that Haley (Harriet Slater) puts her tarot knowledge to good use when they find a mysterious deck within the house. Haley warns that it’s extremely bad luck to borrow...

Updated, 12:50 Pm: Ishana Night Shyamalan’s debut film is on the move, again. And the new date is a familiar one. Two months after Warner Bros. shuffled The Watchers back by a week to the June 14-16 Fathers Day frame, the pic is headed back to its original June 7 date.
It’ll have some action-packed company that Friday, going against Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the long-gestating fourth film in the nearly 30-year-old franchise. Lionsgate’s The Crow remake also was set for June 7, but that pic flew away from the date about three weeks ago and now is set for August 23.
Warners Bros. is hoping to cater to a female audience with The Watchers.
Also opening wide on June 7 is Vertical Entertainment’s The Exorcism directed by Joshua John Miller.

Ishana Night Shyamalan’s debut feature The Watched is just a couple of months away. You can catch the film’s full trailer right here.
Following a brief teaser back in February, we now have a full trailer to mark the imminent release of The Watched – known as The Watchers in the US – the debut feature from Ishana Night Shyamalan, the daughter of M Night Shyamalan.
The movie is an adaptation of Am Shine’s 2022 novel of the same name. Like her father before her, Shyamalan Jr has leaned into the power of mystery when it comes to marketing her film. The blurb reads that ‘Dakota Fanning stars as Mina, a 28-year-old artist, who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland. When Mina finds shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night.’
Strangers. Mysterious creatures. An untouched location.

M. Night Shyamalan returns to theaters in August with new thriller Trap (watch the trailer here), but first up we’re getting the feature debut of his daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan.
Director Ishana Night Shyamalan’s (“Servant”) horror movie The Watchers is coming to theaters on June 14, 2024, and New Line Cinema has released a brand new trailer today.
This full trailer for The Watchers gives us a much better idea of what’s going on here, while still retaining the core mystery at the center of the film. All we really know is that there’s a building in the center of the woods that’s observed on a nightly basis by… someone. Or something.
These mysterious creatures watch a group of humans like their own twisted version of reality TV. “No one sees them and survives,” one character states. A different character says, “They have come to our world for a reason,...

As Warner Bros. offers a deeper look at its upcoming thriller “The Watchers” with a new trailer, director Ishana Night Shyamalan told IndieWire at the recent Summer of Shyamalan event that audiences should be ready for more twists and turns when the film is released in June.
“It ultimately expands into a sort of dark fairy tale, fantasy essence. And that’s the thing I really love most of all,” said the filmmaker of her feature directorial debut starring Dakota Fanning as a woman who becomes trapped in the forests of western Ireland with three strangers, and is stalked at night by mysterious creatures. “In many ways, it’s using the horror genre to enter another space, and that becomes a surprise of the journey as well. So hopefully people will be vibing with it.”
In a Q&a at the April event, Shyamalan was especially proud to spotlight her quartet of actors.

Music is one of the most mysterious natural phenomena of our world and in Irish folk horror All You Need Is Death, music becomes an ancestral force of doom and destruction. Written, directed, and produced by Paul Duane this chilling slow-burn dives headfirst into a hallucinatory world that peels back reality and opens the doors of perception to plane where entities and energies older than mankind thrive and feed on the very fabric of our being.
The importance of music, specifically Irish folk song, is immediately established. Anna (Simone Collins) and Aleks (Charlie Maher) travel the country, interviewing and secretly recording rare Irish folk ballads. The people they meet with are incredibly protective of these songs, and it’s as clear as day to everyone that Anna and Aleks have ulterior motives in acquiring these snippets of their culture. Like headhunting protected animals, Anna and Aleks are specifically seeking out...

Everyone wants to be loved, but there is a fine line between a healthy, loving relationship and an unhealthy, compulsive kind of love. Some of the most beautiful, and terrifying, love stories belong to ancient Irish mythology. For instance, the tale of Clíodhna and Ciabhan tells the story of Clíodhna, Queen of the Banshees and member of a supernatural race of God-like beings, who made the mistake of falling in love with a mortal from Ireland named Ciabhan. Their forbidden romance angered the other gods, causing the God of the Sea to punish the lovers by playing an enchanting song, which hypnotized Clíodhna. Entranced, Clíodhna fell asleep and was swept away by the ocean, never to be with Ciabhan.

Back in 1967, The Beatles told us, “All You Need Is Love.” Back in 2004, writer Hiroshi Sakurazaka brought the world a novel called All You Need Is Kill, which served as the basis for the 2014 Tom Cruise sci-fi adventure Edge of Tomorrow… and I could understand why the title was changed for the movie, as All You Need Is Kill never sounded quite right to me. A better version would be All You Need Is Death – and that’s the title the makers of an upcoming folk horror movie have decided to use for their film, which is set to receive a VOD and limited theatrical release on April 11th. With that release date just a couple weeks away, a trailer for All You Need Is Death has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.

The daughter of an iconic horror filmmaker making a thriller about a father sacrificing himself? Just don’t call it meta.
Caitlin Cronenberg’s directorial feature debut “Humane” is a family thriller starring Peter Gallagher as a patriarch whose suicide plan goes haywire, leaving his children (Jay Baruchel and Emily Hampshire) to fight for their own survival. Cronenberg is the daughter of body horror auteur David Cronenberg; her brother Brandon Cronenberg helmed “Possessor” and buzzy thriller “Infinity Pool.”
“Humane” takes place over the course of a single day, set months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population, per the official synopsis. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman has invited his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program. A young couple records and collects folk songs in rural Ireland, selling them to a mysterious, rich buyer. When rumours of a song never-before-heard reach the couple, they find themselves in an uneasy alliance with a music professor to discover an ancient song, a taboo ballad that may end up unlocking some dark truth from the forgotten past that will alter all their isolated lives.
Folk-horror is a term that sends shivers down my spine. And with good reason, it’s often used as a catch-all for stories that are more atmosphere than plot (by the same token I think “found footage” is often little more than an excuse for bad camerawork). And that’s certainly the case with this film – a music-centric terror tale, All You Need is Death is...

Prior to making headlines the next day after a short-lived health scare that required a brief stay in hospital, Ireland’s President Michael D. Higgins arrived at Dublin’s Complex arts center last Wednesday to present the Dublin film festival’s highest honor to Steve McQueen. Introduced in 2007 and named the Volta Award, after the first commercial cinema set up in Dublin in 1909 by writer James Joyce, its previous recipients include Daniel Day Lewis, Claudia Cardinale and Al Pacino. The famously serious director was in high spirits, enthusing that “festivals are about passion, a passion for film.” “There’s always a buzz, isn’t there?” he continued. “[As you] go to the next picture, the next film, you tend to give people tips and say, ‘Oh, you’ve got to see this, you’ve got to see that…’”

“You can’t see them, but they see everything.”
Warner Bros. has released the trailer for the upcoming horror film “The Watchers,” written and directed by Ishana Shyamalan, the daughter of horror veteran M. Night Shyamalan, in her directorial debut. Based on the gothic horror novel by A.H. Shine, the film stars Dakota Fanning and is set for release in North America on June 7.
Per its official description, “The Watchers” follows Mina (Fanning), a 28-year-old artist “who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland. When Mina finds shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night.”
In the eerie trailer, Mina looks at a wall made entirely of glass. She’s informed that it’s actually a one-way window; every night the group is watched by a sinister audience, and Mina is just the latest addition to the cast.
