As Easter Sunday approaches this weekend, we thought we’d “die” your eggs a little a differently. That is, we’re on the great hidden treasure hunt for some of the most colorful and delicious horror movie Easter eggs found in some of our favorite titles. But here’s the thing. We aren’t talking about obscure cameos from people that are hard to miss, or even secretive foreshadowing within a single movie, a la the entire Final Destination franchise. Nor are we talking about mere verbal references to other horror movies. Rather, we’re interested in visual crossover clues found one horror movie that pay homage to another, found tucked away in the background or even hidden in plain sight. You see the distinction. Good. Hopefully you haven’t already seen what’s to follow. Happy holiday y’all, here’s our Top 10 Favorite Crossover Horror Movie Easter Eggs!

The George A. Romero classic Dawn of the Dead (get it Here) is a film that can actually reasonably celebrate its 45th anniversary in two separate years. While its premiere was held at the Cannes Film Festival in 1978 and a cut of the film that was put together by co-financier Dario Argento for non-English speaking countries was given a theatrical release in Italy that year, the cut Romero put together for English-language speaking territories didn’t make its way to screens in the United States until ’79. So whether you’re celebrating Dawn of the Dead‘s 45th anniversary in 2023 or 2024, or both, you’re still doing it right. Red Band Releasing is looking to bring Dawn of the Dead back to the screen in the U.S. and Canada this year, and have sent out a message to fans, telling them that if they want to see the movie on the big screen,...

After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, three separate moments from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, and the “Jason vs. Tina” battle in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek is continuing his The Best Scene video series with a look at the opening action of director Zack Snyder‘s 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake (watch it Here). This is when zombie hell breaks loose and Johnny Cash kicks in on the soundtrack. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above.

Regal Cinemas is bringing Dawn of the Dead back to theaters for one night only on October 27th in celebration of the horror classic’s 45th anniversary.
George A. Romero’s 1978 film — a sequel of sorts to his 1968 project Night of the Living Dead — stars David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger, and Gaylen Ross as survivors of a zombie outbreak who take refuge in a suburban shopping mall while mass hysteria wreaks havoc on their town. While in production, the project caught the attention of fellow horror filmmaker Dario Argento who agreed to co-finance the film in exchange for distribution rights in his home country of Italy. Having recently come to international acclaim with his magnum opus Suspiria, Argento’s co-sign on Dawn of the Dead also helped propel Romero’s success.

George A. Romero’s elite classic Dawn of the Dead turns 45 years old this year, while Zack Snyder’s remake approaches its own 20th anniversary. But the two different versions of Dawn of the Dead are far from the only two horror movies set inside shopping malls.
“Mall Horror” is basically its own subgenre, and below are two under-discussed gems in the shopping mall arena that are well worth your time as you celebrate the 45th anniversary of the greatest “Mall Horror” movie ever made – and the one that started it all…

Every once in a while, the first few frames of a film will capture you. It isn’t common, but certain ones – in any genre – ingratiate right out of the gate. Such is the case with Death Spa (1988); when lightning hits the ‘Starbody Health Spa’ leaving only the letters ‘Death Spa’ lit up within the first moments, I knew I was in for some fun. Anything that riffs on Motel Hell (1980)’s ‘Motel Hello’ sign can’t be all bad, you know? Death Spa is as high energy as its title implies, twice as goofy, and has more than enough plot for three films.
It was a weird time for horror; by the late ‘80s slashers couldn’t cut through a paper bag, so filmmakers sometimes turned to the supernatural for new thrills (or at least ones absent from the screen for a bit). Director Michael Fischa (My Mom's a Werewolf...

It’s time for a new episode of The Manson Brothers Show, the video series hosted by the writers/stars of the horror comedy The Manson Brothers Midnight Zombie Massacre – Chris Margetis (Stone Manson) and Mike Carey (Skull Manson)! In this one, the Boys are discussing writer/director Rob Zombie’s twisted road trip movie The Devil’s Rejects (watch it Here). To find out what they had to say about the film, check out the video embedded above!
The Devil’s Rejects has the following synopsis: After a raid on the rural home of the psychopathic Firefly family, two members of the clan, Otis and Baby, manage to flee the scene. Heading to a remote desert motel, the killers reunite with Baby’s father, Capt. Spaulding, who is equally demented and intent on maintaining their murder spree. While the trio continues to torment and kill various victims, the vengeful Sheriff Wydell slowly closes in on them.

The 1981 film Knightriders (watch it Here) isn’t a horror film, but comes from one of our all-time greatest genre film directors (and my personal favorite of the bunch), George A. Romero. It’s a brilliant, emotional dramatic film that also features some really cool extended motorcycle stunt sequences… and I’m glad to hear that the folks at Scare Flair Records are giving the score composed by Donald Rubinstein a vinyl release.
The vinyl is now available to order through ScareFlair.com. The site notes that the records are already in hand and will begin shipping out almost immediately.
Here’s some information on the Knightriders score vinyl release: This release comes with the complete score on X2LP inside a gatefold jacket, 11×11 Program of Events insert, exclusive liner notes by Composer Donald Rubinstein, classic artwork by Boris Vallejo, new artwork by Ghoulish Gary Pullin, and features some very...

Here they are stalked by the menacing Leatherface and his demented family…a bizarre cannibalistic clan with blood on their hands and a feast on their minds. Horror fans are no strangers to the curse of deleted scenes and the seemingly arbitrary nature of the MPAA. Genre heavyweights like Brandon Cronenberg must contend with a rating system that can make or break a film, while studios cut R-rated features, endeavoring to garner that more accessible, ever-so-profitable PG-13. Throughout horror history, there are hundreds of excised scenes, some of which, including the now infamous baboon from "The Fly," are readily available, with others, such as many "Friday the 13th" deaths, relegated to the annals of "could have been."
Even more curious, however, are ideas so brutal they were never filmed, to begin with. While brutality at times seems to be the genre's core attraction, there are times when, either at the behest of a studio or filmmaker, planned scenes are scrapped. While the reasons differ from production to production, here we'll be looking at six ideas from famous...

There’s something inherently unsettling about teeth, and the addition of someone prodding at them with sharp instruments is especially invasive. On the other side of that coin, the negative association with dentistry can impact the professionals. Cult filmmaker Brian Yuzna tapped into these fundamental fears with his 1996 direct-to-video film, The Dentist, and its 1998 sequel, The Dentist 2.
In fact, Yuzna knew he could sell the movie based on the title alone, so he solicited writers to pitch him on the concept. It was his old pals Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli — for whom Yuzna had produced Re-Animator and From Beyond — that cracked the script. Charles Finch (who went on to executive produce David Cronenberg’s Spider) was later brought in to punch it up.
Continuing the underlying social commentary Yuzna explored with Society, the film centers on hot-headed dentist Alan Feinstone. After catching his wife (Linda Hoffman) going down...

Rob Zombie's 2012 film "The Lords of Salem" may be the filmmaker's best. In it, Sheri Moon plays Heidi, a woman living in Salem, Ma, and recovering from drug addiction. She works as a soft-spoken DJ at the local radio station with Ken Foree and Jeff Daniel Phillips. When they play a mysterious rock record on their show — a record that only plays three scary, deep notes over and over — it awakens something inside Heidi. She begins having surreal visions of Satan. The visions are also, perhaps, being encouraged by a trio of women who regularly drink wine and converse loudly in her apartment building.
Eventually, it will be revealed that the record was a tool by the town's local Satanists (!) used to hypnotize the town's women into remembering their former lives as the woman tortured and killed in Salem generations ago. Satan, then, becomes a tool for feminist vengeance.

Stuart Gordon was a true master, and a visionary of those cold places where darkness reigns and the indescribable refuse to be ignored. But Gordon had a secret weapon that set him apart from the others who tried to exhume Lovecraft for the big screen: Humor. Prevalent in his spectacular debut, Re-Animator (1985), it is deployed with subtle shading – by Gordon’s Grand Guignol designs, that is – in his follow-up From Beyond (1986); a film no less entertaining, just as gory, way goopier, and très salace. (That’s French. It means ‘super horny’. I run a classy joint here.)
Released late October by Charles Band’s Empire Pictures, From Beyond was met with acclaim but relatively little return at the box office, ensuring a cult status very much earned; that it still resonates (foreshadowing pun!) with horror audiences today is a lasting testament to it – and Gordon’s – appeal.

Zack Snyder‘s career comes full circle with the upcoming Netflix zombie extravaganza Army of the Dead, a film almost two decades in the making. The filmmaker best known for Justice League and Watchmen first cut his teeth on a feature-length project with Dawn of the Dead, Universal Picture’s high-octane remake of the George A. Romero horror classic. A much more action-packed and grim take on Romero’s mall-set zombie shenanigans, the 2004 re-imagining remains Snyder’s best flick.
Originally conceived as an even darker follow-up to the Dawn remake before ending up in development hell, Army of the Dead is now the first chapter in a new zombie shared universe for Netflix, which is also producing a prequel film and an anime series that explore other aspects of Snyder’s latest undead creation. No, it doesn’t seem to be directly connected to Romero’s own series of films,...

Hello! It’s been a little while since we’ve had a new Catalog From The Beyond, hasn’t it? To be honest, in a year when it felt like my brain cells were squeezing out of my head like a tube of toothpaste, I had to take a break from some of the workload. But with the dawning of the New Year, I’m ready to hit the reset button and dive back into the Catalog.
I think it only fair to ease into things, however, so the following take won’t be the spiciest one I’ve ever put forth: Ken Foree seems like a pretty cool dude. After winning our hearts as the stoic Peter in George A. Romero’s classic Dawn of the Dead, he’s stayed there pretty much ever since in movies like From Beyond, Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Lords of Salem, and...

I remember seeing the 1978 classic, Dawn of the Dead, in the mid-90s. It was one of the first horror movies I ever really fell in love with, and helped turn me into a fully fledged horror fan. George A. Romero’s masterpiece has become an iconic picture in the history of cinema, and one of the most beloved horror films of all time. While it wasn’t the first zombie movie, it certainly changed the landscape of what a zombie movie could be. From the location to the music to the scenes of gore, Dawn of the Dead is absolutely and undeniably great.
We all know what the film is all about. It’s the tale of a group of survivors holding up in...

It isn’t often that we get to see Terry Crews in a leading role, but John Henry has the beloved actor front and center for a dramatic revenge tale. After a fairly limited theatrical release in January, the pic’s now on Netflix and has managed to find spots on both the Top 10 Movies and Top 10 Overall lists, seemingly indicating that it’s quite popular amongst viewers. But it seems not everyone’s a fan.
For those unfamiliar, John Henry tells the story of an ex-gang member from La who turned his back on a life of crime to settle into a quieter, suburban life. But after two young immigrants find themselves mixed up with his old gang leader, he decides to return to the life he left behind “to end the cycle of violence on his own terms.”

Indescribable shapes both alive and otherwise were mixed in disgusting disarray, and close to every known thing were whole worlds of alien, unknown entities. It likewise seemed that all the known things entered into the composition of other unknown things, and vice versa. Terry Crews’ John Henry is a man of few words. “John Henry,” the folklore-cribbing, violent thriller (opening theatrically and available on demand) about a former gang member who must face his demons when two young immigrants require his help, feels like it wants to say a lot. But what exactly?
Utilizing horror-movie gestures and ladling spaghetti Western sauce on top, first-time director Will Forbes has made a movie stuffed with images of monstrous black men. That was likely not his intention. But it does show what can go awry with when promiscuous genre-borrowing trumps culturally aware storytelling (Doug Skinner co-wrote). Think of it as a Jordan Peele counter-effect.
Still, it’s hard not to love a massive man who’s comfortable with a small, fluffy dog. John Henry’s pup meets its untimely end on a Compton street early in the B movie. One might pity the fool who was...

[Editor's Note: With this past year being another great one across multiple mediums in the horror genre, Bryan Christopher continues Daily Dead's "Favorites of 2019" features by reflecting on his favorite viewing and reading experiences from 2019!]
Doctor Sleep: Oddly enough, my favorite movie of the year was one I didn’t even think I’d bother seeing until about a week before its release. I like both The Shining and Mike Flanagan well enough, but an adaptation of a book I haven’t read that’s also a sequel to a movie that the author hated seemed like a tough tightrope to walk. But an errant viewing of the trailer had me intrigued, and damn if taking a chance didn’t pay off. I get that people have issues with the fan service paid in the return to a certain infamous hotel in the film’s climax, but for me it worked as a natural conclusion to a story that took elements introduced in The Shining and expanded on them without just rehashing or diluting them. I love Ewan McGregor as an adult Danny Torrance...

"Trust me... I'm not a killer. I'm John Henry." Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie action drama titled John Henry, set to drop into theaters + on VOD coming up in January. Terry Crews stars as the titular John Henry, some kind of big brute who lives in South Los Angeles taking care of his father. His is a quiet man with a violent past who suddenly has his life changed when an immigrant girl on the run from gang violence nearby stumbles into his life. This also stars Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges, Jamila Velazquez, Tyler Alvarez, Ken Foree, Joseph Julian Soria, and Dohn Norwood. Haven't heard much about this before today, and it hasn't shown up at any festivals. Looks like it might be cool to watch Crews kicking ass. Which is Better is a new column here on Nerdly where we’ll pick two related movies and discuss each of them, and then conclude which we think is the best one. It might be about sequels in comparison to the first film, or the original film and its eventual remake, we might even do it for full film franchises. It could be about TV shows or movies that have similar themes or stories. It will be a way to talk about which, in my view, is the better. This time I’ll be putting Rob Zombie’s 2003 film House of 1000 Corpses against his 2005 film, The Devil’s Rejects.
Now, I know Rob Zombie often gets a lot of crap about his films, sometimes deserved, sometimes not, but I do like these two movies and feel like they’re his best to date. 3 From Hell just recently came out, and...

Stars from the worlds of horror and heavy metal descended on the historic Vista Theatre in Los Angeles on Monday for the world premiere of Rob Zombie’s savage new thriller “3 from Hell.” The film, which is being shown theatrically through Fathom Events for three consecutive nights until Sept. 18, is the third entry in Zombie’s horrific series centered on the murderous Firefly family, first introduced in “House of 1000 Corpses” in 2003, followed by “The Devil’s Rejects” in 2005.
Rockers Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein of the Misfits, and metal guitarist John 5 were on hand to celebrate the film’s gory debut, along with dozens of actors who have appeared in Zombie’s films over the years.
Noticeably absent, however, was cult film superstar Sid Haig, whose unforgettable performance as psychopathic clown Captain Spaulding in “House of 1000 Corpses” turned him into a modern horror icon.

All right, you all owe me an apology. There’s been a George A. Romero-directed film featuring faux knights jousting on motorcycles since 1981 and not one of you thought to tell me about it? I’ll make an allowance for the fact that I wasn’t alive until 1984, but beyond that there’s really no excuse. The film in question, Knightriders, is a rare non-horror entry from the man responsible for the modern interpretation of zombies. But it’s also unquestionably a Romero flick.
Set in Western Pennsylvania (naturally) Knightriders features a slew of Romero regulars, including Ed Harris, Ken Foree, Tom Savini, Christine Forrest, a cameo from future Creepshow collaborator Stephen King, and even a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it spot from Captain Rhodes himself, Joseph Pilato.

As genre fans, we are truly lucky to be living in a day and age where we can enjoy a variety of incredible film projects that celebrate nearly every aspect that we love about horror. Sometimes, these documentaries are focused on a specific film or a franchise, sometimes they hone in on one director or actor in particular. But with Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror, director Xavier Burgin has crafted an 83-minute journey spanning over an entire century of filmmaking that not only celebrates the milestones, but also holds Hollywood and society as a whole responsible for how black culture has been represented in cinema, as well as lauding the achievements of black creatives who have helped pave the way for future generations throughout their careers.
