When Roseanne premiered in 1988, the ABC series offered viewers a bold new take on the traditional family sitcom.
In the era of Full House, The Cosby Show, and Growing Pains, the Conners reminded Americans that not all households are filled with affluent parents imparting valuable life lessons to their grateful, obedient children.
The Simpsons often receives the lion's share of the credit for expanding our notion of what a sitcom family could look like.
But it's worth noting that Roseanne beat Homer and company to the punch when it came to mining comedic gold out of suburban dysfunction.
The show was a critical success right out of the gate, and over the course of its nine-season run, it developed into a reliable ratings juggernaut.
In its second season, Roseanne stunned skeptics by knocking The Cosby Show out of the top spot on the Nielsen charts.

This is Day 109 of the WGA strike and Day 36 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The WGA and SAG-AFTRA teamed up for its first bicoastal picket in Los Angeles and New York on Friday, and Latino Hollywood showed up in droves.
At Warner Bros. in Los Angeles, more than 2,000 actors, writers and supporters hit the sidewalks as temperatures hit the high-80s. Salsa and Bachata music blasted through the speakers near Gates 2 and 3 as patient strike captains including Vida star Chelsea Rendon, kept everyone moving safely. One captain was overheard saying, “You have to keep moving, but you don’t have to stop dancing!” And so they did.

John Goodman was last nominated for an Emmy way back in 2010 when he earned a Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor bid for “You Don’t Know Jack.”; he lost that race to David Strathairn (“Temple Grandin”). The TV vet could be about to make a return to the Emmys for the first time in a lucky 13 years thanks to his ongoing role in the “Roseanne” sequel series “The Conners.”
“The Conners” follows the titular working-class family struggling through day-to-day life in Illinois after the sudden death of the original show’s title character Roseanne (Roseanne Barr). Goodman plays Dan Conner, who was the husband to Roseanne and the father to their four children: Darlene (Sara Gilbert), Becky (Lecy Goranson), DJ (Michael Fishman), and Jerry Garcia (who was retconned in “The Conners”).
As Dan, Goodman exudes the warm, everyman charm he has long had a high currency in throughout his career.

The “Roseanne” years may be gone but, judging by Wednesday night’s episode of “The Conners,” they are not forgotten, as guest star William H. Macy shows up in Lanford as Smitty Cusamano, Rosie’s ex-boyfriend — and Jackie’s former high school crush.
In the exclusive clip above, Dan is pleasantly surprised when Smitty – who left town decades earlier and “made a killing” in the pool supply business — shows up at his door, having arrived to attend a mutual friend’s funeral. “Why hang out with us regular folks after you made it big?” Dan jokes.
“’Cause showing the regular folk how you made it big is the whole point of making it big,” he answers. “Money doesn’t bring you happiness, Dan. But it makes other people feel bad about themselves, and that makes you happy.”

The Conners will be saying goodbye to one of its original stars as Michael Fishman departs the series ahead of Season 5, but how will his character DJ Conner be written out of the show? According to TV Line, executive producer Bruce Helford explained how the show will handle the character’s absence. Ahead of the September 21 premiere, Helford revealed that DJ will be thousands of miles away from Lanford. “He’s visiting [Geena], who right now is stationed overseas,” Helford said. “She was involved in the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, and she is still overseas on assignment, so he is going to be going over and spending time with his wife. It does get addressed in the first few episodes.” (Credit: ABC/Robert Trachtenberg) DJ’s wife Geena was played by Maya Lynne Robinson when The Conners launched in 2018, but as fans will recall, she left after Season 1 as the character reenlisted in the Army.

ABC’s “The Goldbergs” will kill off Jeff Garlin’s character Murray, the patriarch of the family, upon its Season 10 return on Sept. 21. The former sitcom star exited the series in December 2021 following the results of an Hr investigation into unspecified on-set behavior.
Co-showrunners Alex Barnow and Chris Bishop revealed the news to Entertainment Weekly, saying that the series will pick up several months after Murray’s death.
“[Murray] will have passed, and we are sort of starting from a place of multiple months removed from his death,” Barnow said. “The family has already grieved, unlike Pops [George Segal] and the premiere of Season 9 where they’re dealing with it sort of very freshly. This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that. So we’re starting with...
