Five years ago, about six weeks after HitFix launched, I reviewed a Billy Joel concert at the opening of a new venue at Agua Caliente Casino in Palm Springs. Growing up, I was a massive Joel fan. His had been one of my first concerts and his music served as a soundtrack for much of my youth, as it did for millions of people. But the show I saw that day in February 2009 was a poor facsimile to the many great Joel concerts I’d seen over the years. The Roskilde Festival was created in 1971 by two high school students, Mogens Sandfćr and Jesper Switzer Mřller, and promoter Carl Fischer.
The festival has grown into one of the four biggest annual rock music festivals in Europe (the other three being the Sziget Festival, the Glastonbury Festival and Rock Werchter).
Featuring everything from big-name international artists to local Scandinavian up-and-coming bands, the festival boasts around 180 acts and around 80,000 paying concert-goers.
The 2009 edition is set to take place from June 28-July 5 and features headliners Coldplay, Volbeat, Slipknot, Oasis, Nine Inch Nails, Kanye West, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Faith No More & Pet Shop Boys.
