Karen Westerfield has been elected business representative of Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild, IATSE Local 706, becoming the first woman — and the first Asian-American — to hold the guild’s top post since it was chartered in 1937. She previously served as the guild’s vice president, recording-secretary and sergeant-at-arms.
Westerfield, a three-time Emmy-winning makeup effects artist who worked for 12 years on the Star Trek TV franchise, defeated incumbent Randy Sayer by a vote of 422-349. More than a third of the guild’s 2,215 eligible members cast ballots in the race. Financial reports filed with the Department of Labor show that Sayer was paid 247,313 last year.
The election was a rerun of one held in January, when the guild’s elections committee found that the ballots had not been secured properly before counting. In that race, Sayer beat Westerfield by just 18 votes. All of the guild’s other officer, board and trustee races also were run again.

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. Check out the full list of nominees below,...

It's pretty hard being a teenager, especially when your boyfriend is keeping secrets, you feel insurmountable pressure from your parents and you're being tormented by the "ghost" of your late Bff. But that's completely normal for the characters of "Pretty Little Liars."
Over the past three seasons, we've been enthralled by the teenage drama of Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin, Emily Fields and Aria Montgomery. But it was a serious case of hair envy that had us tuning back in to "Pll" this time around.
Celebrity stylist Kim Ferry, who spent the last nine years working on "The Office" before landing on the set of the ABC Family show, gave the four leading ladies hair makeovers. Read on for the scoop behind their "softer, yet vulnerable" Season 4 look.
"I noticed that the hairstyles for the 'Pretty Little Liars' ladies have been a variety of youthful, playful styles," said Ferry.
