All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 tells the true story of the first Christmas Eve of World War I, when soldiers across the Western Front laid down their weapons to celebrate Christmas together. For 48 hours to more than a week on some battlefronts, soldiers on all sides declared a truce and ate and drank together, played soccer, and sang carols. This beautiful retelling of the events, based on the firsthand accounts of soldiers who lived it, is woven together with traditional carols and patriotic songs,...

Melissa Carleton's journey home has been a long one. Carleton was hospitalized in March, when surgery to deal with a benign brain tumor resulted in a seizure that left her in a coma. Complicating the situation, she was pregnant with her son West, whom she eventually delivered via C-section in May. "It's been a real challenge," Carleton's father, John Farrell, told ABC affiliate Kfsn in Fresno, California. Saturday was the first time Carleton has seen West in two months and the first time her husband, Brian Lande, has been together with them both. Carleton's parents brought the baby home to Fresno in October.

I had a deep and tragic relationship with The Postmortal long before I ever read it. My brother was a big fan of author Drew Magary and begged me to buy him an advance copy at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con. I met Magary, bought the book, and got it signed for him. Four months later my brother was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. I read The Postmortal two months after he died, so I brought a lot of my own intense emotions to the book.
Outside of his books, Magary writes a regular column called the Dick Joke Jamberoo. He uses all caps A Lot. He also writes a column called Funbag! in which readers send in really stupid questions and he answers them. If you can get past the stupid bullshit Deadspin readers are interested in, you’ll begin to realize that Magary is actually a very thorough thinker.

As you may be aware, the Boston Red Sox won the team's third World Series title in 10 years. The Red Sox clinched a 4-2 victory in the Series, after a 6-1 defeat of the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 6 on Thursday. However, as you may not be aware, "We've got a lot of Sox fans here," according to President Barack Obama. By "here," he means The White House - he called Red Sox manager John Farrell on Monday to congratulate him on his team's victory. Sinister director Scott Derrickson has put another film project on his plate called The Postmortal. It's based on a book written by Drew Magary. The story follows a man who decides to go though a treatment known as "the Cure," which protects him from natural aging, but he can still get sick and die, or be mortally wounded. This seems like a really interesting concept that would make for a fun movie. Here's the description of the book:
John Farrell is about to get "The Cure."
Old age can never kill him now.
The only problem is, everything else still can . . .Imagine a near future where a cure for aging is discovered and-after much political and moral debate-made available to people worldwide. Immortality, however, comes with its own unique problems-including evil green people, government euthanasia programs, a disturbing new religious cult, and other horrors. Witty, eerie, and full of humanity,...

Director Scott Derrickson is a busy guy right now. His most recent horror film Sinister from writer C. Robert Cargill (formerly of Ain't It Cool News) has a sequel in development at Blumhouse Productions, and the director and writer team are also working on an adaptation of the 2011 video game Deus Ex: Human Revolution. In addition, Derrickson is busy with the supposedly real-life supernatural crime thriller Beware the Night starring Eric Bana. Now Derrickson has put another project under his belt for the future as author Drew Magary revealed (via Empire) that the writer and director has optioned his book The Postmortal. The story is set in the near future where immortality becomes available to everyone: John Farrell is about to get "The Cure." Old age can never kill him now. Sinister director Scott Derrickson is a busy man at the moment. He has one project, demonic cop thriller Beware The Night, in front of cameras and plenty of other possible movies waiting in the wings. He’s picked up yet another potential pic, nabbing the film rights to Drew Magary’s The Postmortal, known over here by the slightly clunkier title The End Specialist.Magary’s book is set in the near future, where a cure for ageing is discovered and, after much political and moral debate, made available to people worldwide. Immortality, however, comes with its own unique problems, including evil green people, government euthanasia programs, a disturbing new religious cult, and other horrors. Our hero is John Farrell, a man who decides to take the vastly expensive treatment known as 'the Cure', which means he’s effectively immortal. At least, he’s protected from the ravages of natural ageing,...

When Alex Anthopoulos swung a trade for pitcher Sergio Santos this past summer, he expected Santos to immediately step into the role of Blue Jays closer of the future. Santos, a converted former first round shortstop who had 30 saves for the Chicago White Sox last year, was given star billing by the Jays organization in terms of TV, print ads and jersey manufacturing.
However, things have not worked out as planned. Santos went 2/4 in his first two save opportunities with the Jays, including blowing the home opener, and was placed on the disabled list shortly after that. As a result of what has become a lengthy stint on the shelf, manager John Farrell had no choice but to place veteran reliever Francisco Cordero into the closer role, a position that he soon gave up to long reliever Casey Janssen in an interim role.

Synopsis: John Farrell is about to get “The Cure.”Old age can never kill him now. The only problem is, everything else still can . . . Imagine a near future where a cure for aging is discovered and-after much political and moral debate-made available to people worldwide. Immortality, however, comes with its own unique problems-including evil green people, government euthanasia programs, a disturbing new religious cult, and other horrors. Witty, eerie, and full of humanity, The Postmortal is an unforgettable thriller that envisions a pre-apocalyptic world so real that it is completely terrifying.
A lot of authors take their novels in the post-apocalyptic-dystopian route these days. It seems to be the fad, alongside vampires, werewolves, and zombies. But as a reader and student of critical analysis, I often wonder how these worlds I read about got to the point where the story picks up.

John Farrell’s blog on Forbes has a delightful new video interview with Sir Christopher Lee, the first of a series planned over the next few weeks. His initial interview included a discussion on new media and Lee’s early entrance into hosting a website with help from his son-in-law. What caught my eye was an initial statement by Farrell on his blog. He [...]...
