Before diving into an analysis of this year's Oscar nominations, I want to say at the top that revealing all 24 categories live is the way to go. That was just wonderful, to hear all of those below the line artists' names called in the wee hours of the morning alongside the rest. Let's make that a tradition. Now, the nominations… The first thing of note is, for the first time since we've had the expanded field, there were less than nine Best Picture nominees. Every film we were expecting to get in got in except for "Nightcrawler," which actually came up short in a few other areas (Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress) while only turning up in Best Original Screenplay. It was a well-liked film going into the announcement but it just ended up squeezed by out in those areas at the end of the day. Still, a great push...

SeaWorld is trying really hard to beat the bad rap that “Blackfish” has given it, and close to 200 of the company’s employees weighed in on a local media outlet’s poll asking readers if the documentary changed their perception of the aquatic theme park. As of midday on Thursday, the Orlando Business Journal poll reflected roughly 99 percent of the participants chose “no,” but then skeptical reporter Richard Bilbao did some digging. Turned out 54 percent of the votes — or about 180 of the total 328 votes — were linked to a single SeaWorld IP Address. Also read: Hard-Hitting Ida Awards Nominees...

We are at the end of an era. The very last episode of Breaking Bad played to the heartstrings of millions of fans Sunday night and gave many of true sense of satisfaction. Often times, the best TV series don’t run long enough before being cancelled and ones that do run past three seasons start to stink like a rotting corpse on Walking Dead. Whether you were a fan of Dexter, Seinfeld, Lost or The Sopranos, disappointment gets even the best of them–but not Breaking Bad. There was no ambiguity, no room for interpretation, no loose dangling threads twisting in the wind.
Thankfully creator Vince Gilligan, cast and crew gave us a worthwhile and memorable finale, proper closure to accompany all the mental scarring along the way. Regardless if you were in Team Walt, Team Jesse, Team Hank, or Team Gus, there was no way one could refuse...

Langford’S Picks And Pans
River City
That was really uncomfortable to watch. It’s so difficult to see Robbie clearly afraid of Will, wondering what will set him off and make Will go from holding him to hitting him. Will is acting like Robbie should just get over it and that some flowers will solve the problem without actually addressing it.
And it’s tough to see Robbie scramble to explain to his friends how he hurt himself and then have to fearfully make Will understand that he never told anyone what really happened. This situation has established a pattern at this point, everything is fine, Will loses his temper and hits Robbie, Will does something to make amends and things are peaceful... for awhile.
But now Robbie is obviously aware that Will’s abuse isn’t just a one off or a mistake, but something that could happen...

Craig (from Dark Eye Socket) here with Take Three. This week actress and director Ida Lupino
Ida Lupino a "sensation" circa 1941
Take One: The Bigamist (1953)
The Bigamist probes unseemly marital behaviour and stews on moral sorrows. At its centre is Edmond O’Brien toing and froing between two wives. But behind the camera as director, and in a supporting role as O’Brien’s second, San Francisco wife Phyllis Martin, is Ida Lupino. Her unfussy direction creates lean drama and her performance beautifully matches it, with nary an unnecessary furtive glance or superfluous line spoken. She’s a woman bored on a bus tour of Hollywood stars’ homes, chatted up by O’Brien’s depressed bigamist Harry Graham.
Edmond as Harry: Haven’t you any interest in how the other half lives?
Ida as Phyllis: No, not particularly. I’m just crazy about bus rides – gives me a chance to get off my feet.
