TriStar Pictures believed they had the surest of things when they hired Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin to make the first Hollywood "Godzilla" flick. The duo had just delivered the biggest film of 1996 in "Independence Day," and appeared poised to become a blockbuster brand name on par with Steven Spielberg and James Cameron. Every studio in town wanted to make their next smash hit. But this is where the trouble started: TriStar wanted Emmerich and Devlin to make its next smash hit.
The 1998 iteration of "Godzilla" did not originate with Emmerich and Devlin. TriStar came very close to greenlighting it in 1994 with Jan De Bont (hot off the success of "Speed") directing a screenplay by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (who would eventually make their franchise fortune on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series), which would've placed it in direct competition with "Independence Day" during the summer of 1996. So this all felt awfully fortuitous.

For years, fans have been asking for a follow-up to the fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” and while the news surrounding it has come and gone – remember the one that Margot Robbie would have helmed? – there’s now a clear answer for all those who want to hit the high seas once more.
Sadly, it won’t be with the same characters that we’ve grown to know and love, but it will hopefully not affect our happiness levels as we enjoy the new adventures.
Filming For A “Pirates of the Caribbean” Reboot Set To Begin Next Year With Completed Script
No, this is not one of those false alarms, and while we know shows have been cancelled right after a script has been completed and characters even announced, there’s a better chance of this happening as studio execs are said to be enthusiastic about the new project.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer continues to tease another Pirates project, with the latest update confirming that a reboot featuring a young, new cast is definitely happening.
It’s been the best part of four years since we first heard that Disney had plans to make two very different Pirates Of The Caribbean movies to continue the popular swashbuckling series that already boasts six films. The plans back in 2020 were to develop a female-led version which would be headlined by Margot Robbie alongside another film with an all-new cast. The latter version was based on a script penned by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott, the writer behind the original Pirates films.
Then in 2022, reports surfaced to suggest that the Margot Robbie-led version had been abandoned with Robbie herself stating that Disney ‘didn’t want to do it.’ However, series producer Jerry Bruckheimer popped up not long afterwards to suggest that...

Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that the next installment of Pirates of the Caribbean will be a reboot of the beloved franchise.
The legendary producer said in a recent interview with ComicBook.com that they’re working on a Pirates of the Caribbean sequel as well as Top Gun 3, but noted that the latter is going to take longer to develop since it involves coordinating schedules with several A-list actors, such as Tom Cruise, Miles Teller and Glen Powell.
“You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know,” Bruckheimer said. “Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”

“Pirates of the Caribbean” producer Jerry Bruckheimer said in a recent interview with ComicBook.com that the current plan is to “reboot” the beloved Disney adventure franchise, which has grossed $4.5 billion across five movies. Bruckheimer was fielding a question about the future of his hit franchises, which also includes the Tom Cruise-starring “Top Gun” series.

It's been nearly seven years since Jack Sparrow graced the silver screen in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales." In the years since then, Disney has toyed with various versions of a sixth movie in the multi-billion-dollar franchise. Now, we have word from legendary producer Jarry Bruckheimer that the new movie, whatever it may be, will indeed be a reboot. So don't expect to see Johnny Depp or Orlando Bloom back in the saddle.
Speaking with Comicbook.com in honor of his upcoming film "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare," Bruckheimer was asked whether he believes we'll see "Top Gun 3" or "Pirates of the Caribbean 6" happen first. He didn't go into detail, but he did suggest that "Pirates" is looking to make a fresh start with the upcoming entry. Here's what he had to say about it:

Martin Campbell's "The Mask of Zorro" is one of the most rousing adventure films of the 1990s, a bracing throwback to old-school Errol Flynn swashbucklers that dazzles with masterfully staged sword fights. Perhaps most importantly, it's powered by an emotionally resonant narrative that raises the stakes sky-high, leading to a breathtaking climax that had audiences cheering all three times I saw the film theatrically.
Antonio Banderas is absolute perfection as Alejandro Murrieta, a rakish outlaw who becomes the unlikely successor to Anthony Hopkins' Don Diego de la Vega, aka Zorro. Murrieta also falls for Catherine Zeta Jones' beautiful and feisty Elena Montero, who does not know that her father, the evil Don Rafael Montero, stole her as an infant from de la Vega and his wife Esperanza (Julieta Rosen).
That Elena does not know her true lineage winds up being the heartfelt counterpart to the film's rollicking action. Indeed,...

Fantasy is a genre that is often hard done by the awards groups, particularly the academy. Occasionally, the odd masterpiece such as Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which won 17 Oscars, will break their barrier but, in general, the genre doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Even “Harry Potter” failed to earn an Oscar win and was never nominated in any above-the-line category.
However, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” is poised to be the next fantastical film that makes the academy’s voters sit up and take notice. Part romance, part ghost story, the film is loosely based on Taichi Yamada‘s 1987 novel “Strangers.” The story follows Andrew Scott‘s Adam as a writer struggling with his latest project who forms a relationship with Paul Mescal‘s Harry. As their relationship progresses, Adam finds himself drawn to his past and visits his hometown only...

“Pirates of the Caribbean 6” is looking to get weird, according to co-screenwriter Craig Mazin.
The “Last of Us” showrunner and “Pirates 6” scribe told The Los Angeles Times that the franchise installment he wrote with “Pirates” staple screenwriter Ted Elliott was almost “too weird” for Walt Disney Co.
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird,” Mazin said. “And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”
The most recent “Pirates” film, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” premiered in 2017. The sixth franchise installment is believed to be set with the original characters; however, there is no word yet if Johnny Depp will be back as Jack Sparrow.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer first said in May 2022 that Depp will not return “at this point” amid Depp’s defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard following her abuse allegations.

20 years after uncovering buried treasure with "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," Disney has yet to repeat that success with any of its other theme park ride-inspired films. As such, the House of Mouse intends to return to the scene of the crime for what will be its sixth round of blockbuster piracy so far.
The sixth "Pirates of the Caribbean" installment has already gone through several permutations. "Deadpool" writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick once toyed with the notion of rebooting the franchise, and there was even talk of a spinoff film starring Margot Robbie taking the place of a traditional sequel at one point. Back in 2022, Robbie indicated the latter film, which was written by her "Birds of Prey" scribe Christina Hodson, has since sunk into Davy Jones's Locker, but that may not be the case. Craig Mazin recently told the Los Angeles Times that the script for “Pirates of the Caribbean 6” is so weird he is surprised Disney actually bought it. Variety reported in summer 2020 that Disney was in early development on two “Pirates” movies: A reboot led by Margot Robbie and a sixth film in the original franchise written by Mazin and Ted Elliott, the latter of whom co-wrote the first four “Pirates” movies.

We might be in the era of The Brand Movie, but the 1990s were a heyday for branded video games and some of the most unlikely people wound up with a game of their own. There's "Chex Mix: Chex Quest," Shelley Duvall's It's A Bird's Life," 7up's "Spot Goes to Hollywood," "Make My Video: Marky Mark And The Funky Bunch," and of course, "Pepsiman." Most of these games are terrible at best and unplayable at worst, but there's a certain charm to playing something so clearly intended to make a quick buck off of name recognition. But then there's "Steven Spielberg's Director's Chair," a game that for all intents and purposes was made with the goal of inspiring the next generation of filmmakers by meeting them halfway and educating them through a medium they were already enjoying.

Disney's most successful, new franchise over the last 20 years is far and away "Pirates of the Caribbean." Yes, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is bigger, but that was only made possible through an acquisition after the enterprise was already off to the races. In this case, this was a movie based on a Disney attraction that proved to be a gigantic hit, spawning a multi-billion-dollar series. Naturally, the Mouse House has tried to emulate that success ever since, but nothing has even come close. Beyond that, you could argue that every other attempt has actually been a sizable misfire. That streak looks to continue as Disney's new "Haunted Mansion" (read our review here) is in for a rough weekend.

Turning Disney theme park attractions is a relatively new-ish concept, but the movies based on Disney attractions vary wildly in quality.
The story goes that Dick Cook, who at the time was running the Disney film studio with Nina Jacobson, had originally come up with the idea to “mine the theme parks for movie ideas” (as James B. Stewart put it in “Disney War”). They had made “The Country Bears” and were working on projects based on classic Disney attractions Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion. At the time, Pirates was envisioned as a direct-to-video cheapie, more along the lines of “Tower of Terror,” which debuted as an inexpensive TV on “The Wonderful World of Disney.”
But during a meeting about whether Disney should invest in “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” an expensive Peter Weir movie starring Russell Crowe (they declined), the idea was...

Ten years ago, Disney’s “The Lone Ranger” galloped into theaters everywhere.
An updated and deconstructed version of the character known primarily for his black mask and white horse (named Silver), the movie was a big-budget, high-concept adventure film from the same team behind Disney’s lucrative “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise – director Gore Verbinski, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and star Johnny Depp, who would star as Tonto.
The last time the character had graced the big screen was in 1981 with “The Legend of the Lone Ranger,” a project that went through a similarly troubled production and suffered similar critical and commercial indifference.. But Disney had hoped that the combination of the “Pirates” veterans and the more modern take on the material (with the story told from Tonto’s point-of-view) would be enough to lure contemporary audiences to the Western.

The Oscar nominee claimed last month that Disney did not want to make her female-led “Pirates” movie, which has been in development for several years, but franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Collider that’s not entirely the case. Bruckheimer said that while another “Pirates” script is moving ahead over Robbie’s project, that doesn’t mean the female-centric spinoff is no longer a possibility.
“I think that that script will come forward at a certain point,” Bruckheimer said. “We developed two different stories for ‘Pirates’ and the other one’s going forward first, so that’s what we’re working on, to try to get that one made.”
Variety reported in summer 2020 that Disney was in early development on Robbie’s “Pirates” movie as well as a second reboot written by franchise veteran Ted Elliott and “Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin.

Margot Robbie has been all over the map with new roles in Amsterdam, the upcoming Babylon and the much-hyped Barbie movie releasing next year. Unfortunately, not all of her films are getting the green light, and Robbie said in a recent interview that Disney has moved on from plans to make a female-fronted Pirates of the Caribbean film starring her.
Robbie told Vanity Fair the idea first came up “ages ago, to have more of a female led—not totally female led, but just a different kind of story— which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it.”

Margot Robbie has been flying high as one of the most in-demand actors in recent years, gathering starring roles in "The Suicide Squad," "Amsterdam," "Babylon," and even Greta Gerwig's upcoming "Barbie" movie (which is a sentence that still feels surreal to type). But that doesn't mean it's all smooth sailing, however.
Despite rumors of Robbie being attached to a "Pirates of the Caribbean" revitalization for the last few years now (which /Film originally reported on here), today brings us the much-needed reminder that sometimes it's not worth getting excited about an upcoming production until we're actually sitting down in the theaters with the lights about to come down. In an extensive profile with Vanity Fair, the movie star dropped the bombshell that the "Pirates" film will no longer be moving forward. As Robbie put it:

Margot Robbie announced in a new Vanity Fair cover story that her female-fronted “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie is dead at Disney. Variety has reached out to the studio for comment. It was announced in June 2020 that Oscar nominee Robbie would be the star of a new “Pirates of Caribbean” movie at Disney written by her “Birds of Prey” screenwriter Christina Hodson.
“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool,” Robbie told Vanity Fair about her intended “Pirates” movie with Disney. “But I guess they don’t want to do it.”

When Neil Gaiman's "Sandman," one of the most stirring and enveloping sagas I've ever experienced in any medium, at long last found safe harbor at Netflix, I was relieved. Even if the live-action adaptation of arguably the greatest comic book series ever written fell short of my fevered imagination, it would at least be realized on the author's terms. And this was important to me not only because I adore the work, but because I know how very, very wrong it could've gone had Warner Bros. moved forward with William Farmer's rewrite of Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio's screenplay adaptation in 1998.
Everything I just said about "Sandman" as a comic book? The extreme opposite goes for Farmer's script. We've seen great works of fiction travestied by misguided screenplays: Brian De Palma's "The Bonfire of the Vanities" is a miscast gutter-ball that veers from satire to caricature...

Say what you will about Gore Verbinski's "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy, but one cannot accuse the director of phoning things in. The first of the "Pirates" films, "The Curse of the Black Pearl" in 2003, was a grand ol' time, deftly wedding an old-school swashbuckler with elements from the famed Disney theme park ride and a wry sense of wit provided by "Aladdin" and "Shrek" co-writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. Over 654 million later, Elliott, Rossio, and Verbinski reunited to shoot a pair of back-to-back sequels in the hopes of bottling lightning two more times. The results, put plainly, are a lot, but again, the opposite of phoning things in.
Of the two "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels, it's 2006's "Dead Man's Chest" that presented some of the biggest technical challenges. The movie features two of the more inspired set pieces in the entire franchise, both of which involve...

Ten years ago, Disney’s “John Carter” opened nationwide.
Meant to be a potential franchise-starting blockbuster, it was savaged by critics, who called the film “wanly plodding and routine” (Entertainment Weekly), and “a giant, suffocating doughy feast of boredom” (The Guardian), and was met with indifference by general audiences, who simply didn’t show up..
Quickly, the movie and its fate took on a nearly mythical dimension – it wasn’t just a box office disappointment, it was a staggering creative and commercial failure, the kind of movie that is often mentioned in the same breath as other high-profile misfires like “Ishtar” or “Waterworld.”
But the actual story of “John Carter” – how it was conceived, what happened during production, and how it all fell apart thanks largely to a misguided marketing campaign – is much more complex and much more interesting.

Disney has seen enormous financial success from their tactic of remaking their animated classics in live-action, but the response from critics and audiences alike has been much more mixed. It’s generally agreed that the new versions can’t top the original films, of course, but the relative creativity and entertainment value of the remakes is not the only controversial element about them. For instance, it’s known that the creators of the old movies don’t receive any fee for having their original works remade.
The latest filmmakers to talk about this are Gary Wise and Kirk Trousdale, the directing duo behind Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Atlantis: The Lost Empire. They spoke with Collider and opened up about how they didn’t receive any money from the studio for the 2017 BatB reboot, which earned Disney a whopping $1 billion at the global box office.

Avast m’readers, there is major blockbuster news on the horizon! Aye, Disney is moving ahead with a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, and Margot Robbie has signed on to lead an all-new seafaring adventure for the franchise. Further she is also reteaming with screenwriter Christina Hodson on the project after Hodson wrote Robbie’s Harley Quinn spinoff movie, Birds of Prey.
The news, which was announced via THR Friday afternoon, reveals that the film is not intended to be spinoff of the previous Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which lasted for five movies over 14 years, but rather a “wholly original story with new characters under the Pirate moniker, itself inspired by the long-running attraction at Disneyland.” Additionally, this is an entirely different project than the previously announced reboot that was at least initially being developed by original Pirates of the Caribbean co-writer Ted Elliott and Chernobyl co-creator Craig Mazin.

Margot Robbie and her Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson are in early talks to front a female-driven Pirates of the Caribbean movie at Disney. Hodson would write the script, and Robbie will star if the deal makes.
Deadline confirmed the talks for the project, which would be a stand-alone film in the Pirates franchise rather than a spinoff or a sequel, according to THR, which first reported the news today.
This would be separate from the Pirates reboot that emerged last fall with Emmy-winning Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott, who co-wrote the first four Pirates films, crafting a story for a new movie. That team-up came after Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the Deadpool screenwriters who were originally hired to write the script for a sixth installment, dropped out earlier this year.

Margot Robbie will star in a female-led version of “Pirates of the Caribbean” for Disney with “Birds of Prey” writer Christina Hodson on board to write the script.

After fifth installment Dead Men Tell No Tales disappointed at the box office – though it must be pointed out that the franchise had become so universally popular that a $795 million global total was viewed as an under-performance – Pirates of the Caribbean went back to the drawing board. Even though the series peaked creatively with the very first movie, and each of the subsequent sequels fared worse with critics, Disney’s desire to monopolize the entire entertainment industry means that they were never going to let a $4.5 billion brand simply come to an end.

Jerry Bruckheimer is expected to produce as he has on the previous five entries in the series. Disney hired the “Deapool” writing team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick last year to reboot the franchise but the duo is no longer on board.
Elliott teamed with Terry Rossio on the first four films, starting with 2003’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” and followed by “Dead Man’s Chest,” “At World’s End,” and “On Stranger Tides.” Jeff Nathanson wrote the script on 2017’s “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” based on a story by himself and Rossio.
Mazin worked on installments of the “Scary Movie” and “Hangover” franchises. He wrote and produced the five-part miniseries “Chernobyl” for HBO and Sky.

The Pirates of the Caribbean reboot has set sail once again. Deadline has confirmed that Disney has brought on Emmy-winning Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott, who co-wrote the first four Pirates films, to craft a story for a new Pirates movie. This comes after Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the Deadpool screenwriters who were originally hired to write the script for a sixth installment, dropped out earlier this year. The film is in the early development stage with producer Jerry Bruckheimer expected to return to the Johnny Depp-steered franchise. Depp launched the films as the bleary buccaneer Jack Sparrow but recent legal drama leaves it unclear on whether he will reprise his role. The films have collectively grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide.

Pirates of the Caribbean may set sail once again. Disney has hired veteran Pirates scribe Ted Elliott and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin to develop a story for a new Pirates adventure feature.
The move is designed to propel fresh wind into Pirates, one of the largest-hauling film franchises of all time, which introduced hard-luck and hard-drinking pirate Jack Sparrow into Disney fandom and pop culture.
But it’s also a franchise that, after five installments, was encountering headwinds. Star Johnny Depp’s waning fortunes, on- and offscreen, didn’t help.

Exclusive: Seventeen years after Jerry Bruckheimer Television took its first major stab at multi-camera comedy series with a sale at CBS, the company is back on the multi-camera sitcom beat with another project in development at the network.
Titled Cdc, the multi-camera workplace comedy hails from Superior Donuts co-developers/executive producers Neil Goldman and Garrett Donovan; Jbtv; Picture It Productions; and CBS Television Studios, where Jbtv and Picture It are under deals.
Written by Goldman and Donovan, Cdc sounds like a spiritual successor to CBS’ mega-hit The Big Bang Theory. It is about a group of socially awkward scientists and their ambitious new co-worker who struggles to find a balance between her career aspirations and loyalty to her unlikely new friends.
Goldman and Donovan executive produce with Jbtv’s Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed and Picture It Productions’ Lance Krall, Peter Siaggas and Peter Stathopoulos. CBS TV Studios produces...
