After settling a legal dispute between himself and the Tolkien estate, author Steve Hillard has reached a deal to develop and secure financing for a feature film adaptation of his novel, Mirkwood, which tells a fictional back story of Lord of The Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien.
Hillard reached the deal with Emo Films, with Joel Eisenberg and Timothy Owens acting as executive producers on the project.
The story mixes a fictional reality and Tolkien's fantasy, telling of the author trying to keep some secret ancient documents—which tell of a halfling named Ara who comes from a land that inspired Middle Earth—from falling into the hands of evil. Thinking that it's too dangerous to keep himself, he gives them to a scissor sharpener who's able to keep them safe for many decades before he disappears and his orphaned granddaughter discovers them.

Back in May, we brought you news of J.R.R. Tolkien’s estate settling with author Steve Hillard on his book, Mirkwood, that featured a fictionalized version of the iconic author of The Lord of the Rings. Hillard argued that his novel is an exercise in literary criticism, which is protected by the First Amendment, about the lack of female characters in Tolkien’s work. The author and Tolkien’s estate came to a settlement with a disclaimer applied to the book distancing Tolkien’s estate from the work of fiction and tHiHihe book was given a greenlight to go ahead.
THR reports that Hillard’s Mirkwood is now heading to the big screen with Emo Films. Emo’s Joel Eisenberg and Timothy Owens are onboard to executive produce the film. Hillard explained the direction the adaptation will take:

While Peter Jackson gets ready to wow us all again with The Hobbit, plans are in the making for a movie about The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings author himself, J.R.R. Tolkien, THR report.
The film will be based on the novel Mirkwood, written by Steven Millard, who has just signed a deal with Emo Films and secured the help of Emo’s Joel Eisenberg and Timothy Owens as executive producers.
As Hillard confirmed, “the adaptation of Mirkwood will follow the template of the novel” – it will centre on a fictional version of J.R.R.Tolkien and explore his “little-known back story, such as his original plans to become a codebreaker in World War II up through the writing of his enduring works.”
And the speculative nature of his book is just what got Hillard in hot water with the Tolkien estate earlier this year, following the...

For decades, filmmakers have been plundering the written words of author J.R.R. Tolkien to create masterful, memorable fantasy worlds on screen. Finally, the table will turn a bit as a new movie aims to tell Tolkien.s story, rather than staging a story Tolkien wrote. Steve Hillard.s book Mirkwood: A Novel About J.R.R. Tolkien, is being adapted into a feature-length film by Emo Films and producers Joel Eisenberg and Timothy Owens, The Hollywood Reporter writes. Amazon says that the work of fiction -- which initially was blocked by Tolkien.s estate but has since resolved its differences -- turns Tolkien into the hero of a story that takes place in our world and that of Middle Earth. It paints the author .as a man haunted by the very myths he rewove into his famous works. and .explores the blurred borderlands where ancient tales, lost heroines, ...

His works have captured the imagination of millions, and the adaptations of those works have also grossed billions — it only makes sense that we would get a movie about J.R.R. Tolkien. But as THR says, this film won’t be based entirely in facts, because it’s based on the novel Mirkwood by Steve Hillard, which takes the author’s life and puts a spin on it, including having him inhabit Middle-earth.
Tolkien‘s estate wasn’t too happy about this book being published, as they sued Hillard over the use of the author’s name and likeness. That’s been cleared up since then, and the movie will be developed and financed with Emo Films; Joel Eisenberg and Timothy Owens are executive producing. Horror on television has not been the same since Tales from the Crypt went off the air in 1996. According to Deadline, the series might be making a return in the near future.
“Fifteen years after horror anthology Tales from the Crypt ended its seven-year-run on HBO, a new TV series based on the popular and controversial 1950s EC Comics anthology is in the works with Gil Adler, producer on the HBO Crypt series, and Andrew Cosby, co-creator of Syfy hit Eureka and co-founder of comic book publisher Boom! Studios. The new hourlong series will neither be anthological nor related to the HBO show. “It will be an ongoing series that uses characters from the comic books in a more modern context,” Cosby said. “It’s all about continually elevating the genre, for both existing fans of the source material and mainstream audiences.” Cosby and Adler first started discussing reviving the...

Bill Gaines is one of the most important figures in comic book history. In the '50s he was the man behind E.C. Comics, which with titles like Tales From the Crypt and Weird Science became a scapegoat for juvenile delinquency. A Senate Subcommittee investigation into the effects of horror comics led to a skewed public perception of Gaines that nearly put E.C. out of business. Gaines kept one title, which he developed over many years: Mad Magazine. Now John Landis, a director with quite a pulp instinct of his own, may finally have the money together to make a film about Gaines. Two years ago was the last time I remember the Landis biopic of Gaines coming up, but I'm sure it has been mentioned since then. Deadline says that Landis is in Cannes lining up the financing for Ghoulishly Yours, William M Gaines, based on a script by Joel Eisenberg.

Filmmaker John Landis must be mounting quite a directorial comeback, as he not only has the upcoming comedy Burke & Hare in the works, but Deadline says he also has another biopic about EC Comics publisher and co-creator Bill Gaines, who was also one of the founders of Mad magazine. Landis is currently lining up financing for the film following Burke & Hare (but no assurances that this will be his very next project). Apparently the script for this is titled Ghoulishly Yours, William M. Gaines and was written by Joel Eisenberg, of only Out of the Black and Hollywood Vampyr previously. Sounds like it could be interesting. Gaines was a published who was driven out of the comic book business in the 1950s by "morality policers" after his unapologetic testimony before a U.S. Senate subcommittee investigating juvenile delinquency. In turn, he started Mad as a "satirical magazine which specialized in...

As the publisher and co-editor of EC comics and as the publisher for Mad Magazine for more than 40 years, William Gaines was the center of a whole lot of controversy. In 1947, after a brief stint in the military, Gaines took over his father’s EC comics. At the time, it stood for Educational Comics, and most of the stories were adapations of Biblical stories. Gaines would have none of that, and he found his calling in publishing horror stories.
Under the EC Comics logo, he would release such classics as “Tales from the Crypt,” “The Vault of Fear,” ‘Two-Fisted Tales,” and more. In the 1950s, Gaines gave an unapologetic testimony to a Senate Subcommittee investigating morality in the comic books of the era.

2002’s “Road to Perdition,” starring Tom Hanks and Paul Newman, was based on a graphic novel by Max Allan Collins, who continued the story in follow-ups “Road to Purgatory” and “Road to Paradise.” Variety reports that production on the second installment is about to get underway. Collins will adapt and direct “Purgatory" for his and Jeffrey B. Mallian’s Jbm Prods. and Joel Eisenberg’s Emo Films. The $20 million indie pic is being shopped at the American Film Market. The project got the go-ahead in August, when DreamWorks-Paramount waived the right to produce the sequel. DreamWorks released the original “Perdition.” As with other DreamWorks titles, “Perdition” came under the Paramount banner when the studio bought DreamWorks. “Purgatory” will follow the character of Michael Sullivan Jr.—the son in “Perdition”—as he returns home from WWII and vows to avenge the murder of his father. He is ultimately led to Frank Nitti,...

"Ghoulishly Yours, William M. Eisenberg wrote the indie thriller Out of the Black and wrote and produced the goth thriller Hollywood Vampyr.
