The horror landscape is filled to the brim with icons and mascots that were successful and failures. The big ones like Freddy, Jason, and Michale speak for themselves, hence only needing their first names mentioned here. You could even go another round with Pinhead, the Leprechaun or Leatherface for that matter. Looking down the aisle at the literal murderer’s row of horror movie villains, you can’t shake a stick without hitting some one-off baddies that were clearly meant for multi-movie stardom but due to box office or critical hate were relegated to one movie. Killers like Horace Pinker from Shocker, Dr. Decker from Nightbreed, and Cropsey from The Burning. What about those stuck...

A few years ago, Scream Factory gave the 1988 film Pumpkinhead (watch it Here) a special edition Blu-ray release, including a limited edition steelbook. Now they’re gearing up to bring Pumpkinhead to 4K on October 10th, and a standalone 4K and Blu-ray combo pack is available for pre-order from the Scream Factory website. Superman & Lois Episode 11
If you just tuned in to Superman & Lois episode 11, “A Brief Reminiscence In-Between Cataclysmic Events” a few minutes in, and perhaps without having seen the previous episodes, you might be forgiven for thinking that this is in fact the pilot episode for a brand new show about the Man of Steel. While every other Arrowverse superhero began life with a fairly detailed origin story episode (or season!), by the time we first met Tyler Hoechlin as Superman and Bitsie Tulloch as Lois Lane, both characters were meant to be well established in their world and careers. The actual first episode of Superman & Lois reminded us that these two were so “seasoned” that they’re already the parents of twin teenagers!
So there are still plenty of questions to be asked about the backstories of our title characters,...

It’s been a few years since the film world lost Wes Craven; and while many reach for A Nightmare on Elm Street, or The Hills have Eyes, or Scream, some like to take the time to appreciate the under sung tunes in his catalogue. This is where I enthusiastically raise a mic and start warbling about Deadly Blessing (1981), an intriguing mix of slasher, the supernatural, and religious fanaticism that could only come from the busy, brainy mind of Mr. Craven.
Released in mid-August by United Artists stateside, Deadly Blessing received no favor from critics, but did bring in over $8 million against a $2 million budget; not too bad for Craven during this period, who found himself making (highly enjoyable) TV films to keep the lights on.
Our story opens in an Amish-like farming community called “Our Blessing”; but instead of the Amish, these are Hittites, a group that one person intones,...

A hundred million viewers tuned in to ABC back in ’83 to find out if the world would end with a bang or a whimper. Edward Hume and Nicholas Meyer’s daring docudrama reacquainted Americans with their status as hostages in a global game of nuclear roulette. Gruesome nuclear annihilation visuals complement fine performances led by Jason Robards. The tense, thoughtful show is presented in separate TV and theatrical versions.

Sometimes, TV horror is the perfect medium for a particular kind of story. Perhaps a story that doesn’t rely on effects or sensationalism to affect the viewer; a tale that works in a simple, straightforward way, dealing with all too common emotions experienced by the regular teenage mind. To wit, Summer of Fear (1978) Aka Stranger in Our House, a chiller directed by the late legend Wes Craven based on the bestselling Ya novel of the same name by Lois Duncan (I Know What You Did Last Summer). It’s a breezy thrill ride that also shows Craven could successfully work in the mainstream.
Originally airing Halloween night on NBC under the Stranger title as one of their The Big Event titles, its toughest competition was ABC’s Three’s Company/Taxi/Starsky and Hutch dynamo. But no worries, if you needed a horror fix on Halloween night, this is what you were watching.

Sometimes, I’ll revisit a film that I loved when I was younger, and find that it has not held up at all. On the flip side, often times I’ll find myself enjoying films much more, that I thought were a little overrated in my younger years. Pumpkinhead is one such film. It’s not that I hated it, I liked it for what it was. I can’t even really put into words what kept me from loving it as much as everybody else. I think maybe it was the Appalachian setting. It felt to me – young me – that it added a layer of cheese to an otherwise serious film. Knowing that, I didn’t revisit Pumpkinhead all that often. I had a couple of different DVD releases, but I’d say I’ve seen it five times total, and most of those were instances of sharing the...

An actor’s job is to act. If an actor fails to make us believe that they are a character, they have basically failed at doing their job. Unsurprisingly, this is at the forefront of the mind of the film producer when it comes to casting an actor in a role.
For the acting community, though, very little is considered to be more shameful than for filmmakers to lose faith in your performance. One of the ultimate humiliations in such an eventuality is having your voice dubbed out of the movie or TV show entirely.
Here, we catalog 9 of the cruelest dub-outs to have occurred over the years…
9. Jeff East – Superman
If you’re a 20-year-old actor and you’ve just been cast as the young Superman, you have every reason to get insanely excited. Out of everyone else who auditioned, they picked you to play the young Christopher Reeve.

High school pals and cartoonists Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster sold the character of Superman to Detective Comics, Inc. (later DC Comics) in 1938. Ever since, the history of the widely considered national cultural icon continues to be awe-inspiring. Superman premiered in Action Comics #1 of the same year, a time when Americans were in desperate need a hero; and ever since, Superman has appeared in a variety of animated and live action movies and television series. The Man of Steel has also appeared in various radio serials, newspaper strips, and even video games throughout the years, and with the success of his adventures, Superman helped to shape the superhero genre and establish its command within American pop culture. An animated cartoon of Superman appeared in 1941, and in 1942, a Superman novel was published. A Columbia...

1978's Superman: The Movie is widely considered a cinema classic. Whatever the reception of its sequels, the Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder-starring film remains the benchmark against which all later adaptations have been measured. 35 years down the line, with the imminent arrival of Zack Snyder's Superman reboot Man of Steel, it seems a good time to look back at what it is up against.
The strength of iconography established in the film is a big part of what makes it such a classic. Just as Reeve became Superman for all successive generations, the stirring John Williams soundtrack became his instantly recognisable theme. When it comes to imagining the superhero, it is the events and imagery in this film that spring instantly to mind. "This is no fantasy - no careless product of wild imagination," says Jor-El in his opening lines, and he was right. This film made Superman...

By most accounts, Harry Cohn was a royal son of a bitch.
For the uninformed, Harry Cohn was co-founder of Columbia Pictures, and the autocratic ruler of the studio from its founding in 1919 until his death in 1958. He was vulgar, crass, tyrannical, a screaming, foul-mouthed verbal bully i.e. a royal son of a bitch.
He was also a cheap son of a bitch.
Originally considered a “Poverty Row” studio, Cohn’s Columbia – at least at first – refused to build a roster of salaried stars as the other studios did. Cohn didn’t want the overhead or the headaches he saw saddling other studio chiefs with their contract talent. Cheaper and easier was to pay those studios a flat fee for the one-time use of their marquee value stars to give Columbia’s B-budgeted flicks an A-list shine. Last Breath Last Breath, which stars Ty Jones, Mandy Bannon and Jeff East, deals with a couple whose marriage is on its last leg. Surveying a warehouse type building that they just bought together, they are abducted by a trench coat wearing madman who forces them into an array of deadly traps and into psychological warfare with one another. Aaron Laue plays the antagonist of Last Breath. Aaron Laue's been in a variety of supporting roles or short films, but with Last Breath he takes it to an entirely different level turning in a chilling, highly effective performance that's a step up from the work that he has previously done. He turns in this performance of a broken down, sad and twisted villain that's at his wits end. To sum it up, Aaron Laue brings dimensionality to what could have been a one note role. He makes his character vivid and real.

A couple whose marriage is on its last breath are kidnapped and tortured by a mysterious man in an old abandoned warehouse that they recently purchased.
The idea of a thought, a memory, a notion, that is so powerful that it manifests itself into something is always an intriguing and welcomed concept, something the genre really hasn't seen since Candyman. Director/writer Ty Jones asks the viewer to question the individuals role on other people in society and how there actions shape them and their choices. To go any further would be to spoil the film, but Jones has many ideas and he has been able to take them and fashion it into one cohesive film. The plot structure is a bit too overtly reminiscent of the Saw series and some of the film's flashback sequences simply don't work,...
